Want to draw a larger audience with better wording? Websites and internet listings, ads, reviews, mail correspondence - it all can be written with a personal creative touch that enhances its appeal. Many businesses use factthrowing, nuts n’ bolts wording that only imparts the basics of a business. Learn to freewrite pertinent, informative copy that gets read while also being properly edited for grammar, spelling and punctuation. Let’s write creative content and then tidy it up, not restrict the creation with the detail of structure. After selling her products at farm markets around the area, Rachel Beckwith opened her micro-bakery, The Bread Lady, in Lake Ann in August. To prepare, she signed up for a marketing course at NMC to learn how to better promote her business. “Despite over a decade working and communicating in the service industry, I knew that if I wanted to reach my own personal customer base in the most ideal ways, I needed to learn more. Moving beyond my own hands-on experience, and insight gleaned from google, I chose Ms. Sonnabends class to gain a deeper understanding of consumer habits, organize my business goals, and excel at my marketing responsibilities. The confidence I gained from taking her class was so valuable to me. I felt much more honed in on my business plan and future, and I know I can make more educated decisions on my marketing plans.” Find out more about her products at facebook.com/thelakeannbreadlady. Great Lakes Culinary Institute Student Story Featured student chef: John Weber Hometown: Flint, Michigan Hello! We don’t always get second chances in life, but when we do, it’s for a reason. I grew up in Flint, Michigan, spent 25+ years in Chicagoland in the Information Technology field, and am now a 10-year resident of Northport, Michigan. The culinary domain is an exciting second career for me. When I was searching for a place to obtain structured education in the Culinary Arts, I discovered that the Great Lakes Culinary Institute is one of the top 10 programs in the nation. After touring the labs and reviewing the faculty credentials, I was confident I would receive an outstanding education in a contemporary facility. The fact that it was a short drive from home was a nice perk.

John Weber, Great Lakes Culinary Institute student

For more information about Great Lakes Culinary Institute visit www.nmc.edu/culinary

The decision to attend GLCI was an easy one and I am thoroughly pleased with my experience here. I am pursuing an associate degree in Culinary Arts. I have a strong belief in the power of food to heal and nurture ourselves and our communities in many ways (physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.) It is my desire to take the skills, knowledge, and values that I am learning at GLCI and apply them in ways that help others. I am unsure of the exact path this will take me on, but I know I will have the “toolbelt” to draw upon.

Crafts such as knitting, ceramics, and weaving focus on repetitive actions and a skill level that can always be improved upon. According to the famous psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, this allows us to enter a “flow” state, a perfect immersive state of balance between skill and challenge. It’s not surprising they are being sought out for their mental and even physical benefits.

Unpacking the Pandemic: People and Politics (Livestream) It’s been about a year since most of us first heard the word “Coronavirus.” The world and our knowledge has evolved, and continues to change at lightning speed. We’ll try to answer fundamental questions including: is SARS-CoV-2 a “socially transmitted disease?” How did politics impact the spread of the disease? Finally, we’ll compare the three global pandemic patterns of pandemic progression. 6 Thurs., Feb. 4-March 11 10-11 a.m. Instructor: Salah Qutaishat

The Politics of Addressing Climate Change (Livestream) Although public acceptance of the threat of man-made climate change seems to be growing, responding to the threat of climate change presents the worst kind of challenge: (1) The threat is distant and diffuse while the costs are immediate and focused. All of the incentives point toward kicking the can down the road. Also, (2) responding to climate change opens up the likelihood of free riding: some actors will realize the benefits without paying their fair share of the costs. In this course, we will review the issue by looking at the structural features of the politics; by reviewing briefly the history of the past 40 years of concern about climate change; and discuss possible paths going forward. 2 Thurs., Feb. 4 & 11 1:30-3:30 p.m. Instructor: Phil Mikesell

But how did we get here? Where did collecting and museum display originate in the western world, and how have our complex and interconnected histories create the museum paradigm that exists today? Explore the roots of the modern museum through lecture followed by a brief question and answer session. From the library of Alexandria in Ptolemaic Egypt to the soaring cathedrals of the Middle Ages; delve into how intellectual curiosity, power, nationalism and institutionalized racism have shaped the museums of today.

On Display: Curating 75 Years of Japanese American Incarceration (Livestream) On February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Executive Order 9066 resulted in the mass incarceration of 120,000 JapaneseAmericans living on the West Coast. This lecture introduces the JapaneseAmerican internment experience through the critical lens of the museum exhibition. How has our nation’s most trusted source for information – the museum – shaped the way we encounter, process, and ultimately acknowledge the past and the living present? How did mass media respond to these public revisions and re-representations of history and justice? Historical and contemporary artists, along with a number of regional and national exhibitions, will further frame the conversation and provide avenues for connection to the current political discourse in the U.S. Wed., May 5 10-11:30 a.m. Instructor: Craig Hadley
