Celebrating Women’s Enduring Legacy

As we celebrate Women’s History Month this March, we must recognize and honor the contributions of women who have significantly impacted our community, our country, and the world. From political leaders to activists, artists, and entrepreneurs, women have played a crucial role in shaping our society and paving the way for future generations.

In Broward County, we are fortunate to have a rich history of women who have made a difference in a variety of fields. For example, Marjory Stoneman Douglas, an environmentalist and journalist, fought to protect the Everglades and raise awareness about the importance of conservation. Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune was a local civil rights leader who founded a school for African American girls and later served as an advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

In addition to these trailblazers, countless women in our community make a difference daily. From teachers and healthcare workers to small business owners and volunteers, women play a vital role in every aspect of our society. This month, we want to celebrate their achievements and recognize the challenges they have overcome to get to where they are today.

Check out the Exceptional Women of Broward section of this month’s magazine. We profile some of the community’s extraordinary women who are impacting the lives of people in our community daily.

Of course, there is still much work to be done to achieve gender equality and ensure that all women have access to the same opportunities and resources. But by acknowledging the contributions of women in our community and beyond, we can inspire future generations of girls and women to pursue their goals and dreams.

Here’s to building a brighter, more inclusive future for all!

ENDOVENOUS LASER ABLATION (EVLA/EVLT)

Endovenous Laser Ablation is one of the most effective treatments for large varicose veins with a 98–100 percent success rate. It involves inserting a thin laser fiber through the affected vein; there are no incisions and thus leaves no scars. Tiny pulses of laser energy are delivered as the fiber is pulled through the vein, gently heating it and causing it to collapse and seal shut. The insufficient veins become shrunken scars that fade over time. These procedures take less than a 30-minutes with little to no downtime afterward.

VARITHENA®

Varithena® is ideal for smaller, less obtrusive veins. It uses foam sclerotherapy and is a safe and effective vein removal technique. During traditional sclerotherapy, a solution is injected directly into the affected veins. While you may feel a pinch at the injection site, foam sclerotherapy isn’t painful. We perform it under ultrasound guidance and direct the foam into the problematic veins watching everything along the way. The person has no downtime, usually minimal to no pain, and only needs to stay active and wear a compression hose afterward.

AMBULATORY PHLEBECTOMY

Ambulatory Phlebectomy is a surgical approach to removing larger and more troublesome veins. It is often an in-office procedure that requires a local anesthetic. The veins are teased out through the tiny holes without causing any significant scarring. Most people return to normal activities immediately afterward without much recovery time.

SPIDER VEIN REMOVAL

Spider Veins Removal is deemed cosmetic even though they may cause symptoms. There are a couple of treatment options. We can use sclerotherapy, where a solution is injected into the vein with a tiny needle. The vein lining gets irritated and gradually seals shut, closing the vein over several weeks. It may take several sessions for all of the veins to go away. There is also a cutaneous laser option if you prefer. The laser uses light pulses to heat the vein and scar them shut. For the tiny and unsightly facial veins or tiny red veins, we also have a machine called the VeinGogh. It uses energy microbursts to close tiny veins without any downtime or scarring. This procedure seals the small veins over a few days to weeks and can be done in a few sessions with excellent results.

Both municipalities are rolling out the green grass for their annual egg hunts, offering families a perfect way to welcome the warmer weather and celebrate the festive season.

In Cooper City, the community is buzzing with excitement for the upcoming EggStravaganza on March 23. Hosted by the Cooper City Recreation Department, this beloved annual event invites participants of all ages, from toddlers to adults, to join in the fun at the Flamingo West Sports Complex starting at 10:00 am. Cooper City's 65th Founder’s Day A Day of History, Fun, and Fireworks

This year marks a significant milestone in Cooper City's history as it celebrates the 65th anniversary of its founding. The city owes its existence to the vision of Morris Cooper, who, nearly 65 years ago, transformed a modest expanse of orange groves and cattle land into the vibrant community we know today. To commemorate this achievement, Cooper City is gearing up for an all-day extravaganza of fun, community spirit, and celebration during the 65th Founder’s Day Parade and Festivities, set against the scenic backdrop of Brian Piccolo Park.

The day's activities commence bright and early at the Community Center with a One Mile Fun Run at 8:30 am, with proceeds supporting the Cooper City/Davie Relay for Life. Following the run, attendees

can savor a delicious pancake breakfast hosted by Boy Scout Troop #118 from 8:30 am to 11:30 am, with tickets available at the door.

A highlight of the morning is the Founder's Day parade and float competition, starting at 10:30 am. This vibrant procession will showcase a variety of participants, including city officials, emergency services, high school bands, scout troops, sports teams, and local businesses, all marching one mile south along SW 90th Ave. from the Community Center to Cooper City High School. This year's theme, "around the world," promises a colorful and diverse display, with float decoration winners to be announced at Brian Piccolo Park at around 7:00 pm.

The afternoon and evening at Brian Piccolo Park will be packed with activities suitable for all ages, starting at 3:00 pm. Attendees can look forward to food trucks, community performances, Bingo, an arts and crafts show, the Cooper City Business Expo, bounce houses, and a BSO Police and Fire Expo, among other attractions. As the evening sets in, from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm, Orlando Mendez will serenade the crowd with live music, providing the perfect ambiance for a picnic under the stars. The celebration will culminate in a dazzling fireworks display at 8:30 pm, ensuring the 65th Founder’s Day is an unforgettable tribute to Cooper City's rich history and bright future.

CAN I DISINHERIT MY SPOUSE?

Believe it or not, it isn’t easy to disinherit your spouse. You can't cut your spouse out of your estate unless they agree in a Prenuptial or Postnuptial Agreement. Even if your will says otherwise, Florida's "elective share laws" ensure that surviving spouses have rights to inherit.

In fact, Florida's elective share law prevents surviving spouses from being denied a share of a revocable trust, probate estate or other property. This law entitles a surviving spouse to a portion of the deceased spouse's estate, regardless of what the will says. Surviving spouses can override the Will's terms to potentially receive 30% of the estate.

What if I am newly married? If you marry after making a will and your new spouse lives longer than you do, according to Florida law, the survivor receives the 30% elective share. Exceptions include prenuptial or postnuptial agreements, provisions in the will providing for the spouse, or a clear intention in the will not to provide for the spouse.

But what about my home? The Florida Constitution and Statutes give a surviving spouse the right to your home that overrules the terms of a will or trust.

I like to tell my clients a story that takes place in the early 1900s when women weren’t allowed to own real property. Their spouse would go to the local saloon to win back his poker losses, and the only thing left to throw in the pot was their homestead deed. The wife and children would then be left homeless. Therefore, the Florida Constitution enacted a specific provision which provides for extra special homestead protection.

Prenuptial Agreements to the Rescue

A prenuptial agreement can be very useful in such a situation. A prenuptial agreement is essentially a contract between two individuals preparing to marry that details how property will be owned throughout the marriage and what rights each spouse has to the property of the other. The agreement specifies the nature and extent of the property that each spouse is bringing into the marriage as well as how that property will be divided if the couple ever divorces or one spouse dies during the marriage. The agreement can outline the extent to which a spouse has the right to give their property to their children from a different relationship or to charities or other beneficiaries through estate planning. It also allows each spouse to waive certain rights to the property of the other spouse, such as elective share rights.

If you are planning to get married, or planning on disinheriting your spouse, time to meet with an Estate Planning attorney to help navigate your decisions!

Last month, HCA Florida University Hospital became a bustling hub of excitement and community spirit as Girl Scout troops from across South Broward County gathered to collect their eagerly awaited cookie orders. In a remarkable display of coordination and cooperation, HCA Florida Healthcare, alongside local volunteers and students from Broward County Public Schools, managed the distribution of over 185,000 packages of cookies to 50 Girl Scout Troops.

The efficiency of the distribution process was a testament to the hard work and organization of HCA Florida Healthcare staff and community members, ensuring that troop representatives could quickly and easily collect their orders. This streamlined system was particularly appreciated by the troops, facilitating their efforts to deliver pre-ordered cookies, a critical funding source for their various activities, including camping and educational programming.

The event's success was highlighted by the Kowechobe Service Unity's Product Manager and the Patient Safety Director at HCA Florida University Hospital, who emphasized the significance of the hospital's involvement in easing the distribution process for the Girl Scouts. Their sentiment was echoed by Madeline Nava, CEO of HCA Florida University Hospital, who expressed her joy in supporting the community through this initiative and serving as a pivotal distribution point for the cookie sales.

Further enriching this collaboration, HCA Healthcare's commitment to supporting the Girl Scouts of the USA extends beyond cookie distribution. The HCA Healthcare Foundation has partnered with GSUSA to create mental health and wellness workshops for girls in grades 4-12. This initiative aims not only to enhance mental wellness among young girls but also to challenge and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues, demonstrating HCA Healthcare's dedication to fostering a healthier and more supportive community.

Pioneering a Path From the Lazy B to the Supreme Court

Agirl named Sandra was born in 1930 and grew up on a vast cattle ranch on the ArizonaNew Mexico border called the Lazy B Ranch. Growing up in a sparsely populated area meant Sandra didn’t attend a traditional school

as a young child. Her mother provided all of her early childhood education. Like her brother Allen, Sandra developed a strong work ethic at a very young age while working on the ranch.

The young girl was quite precocious. By the time she was ten, Sandra had read just about every book on the ranch. Her parents decided to send her to live with her grandmother in El Paso to attend the Radford School for Girls. Sandra’s work ethic and passion for learning helped her excel and gain admission to Standford University. The young woman graduated with honors and decided to stay at Stanford for law school. She graduated from Law School at the top of her

class in 1952.

Despite her academic achievements, Sandra faced significant barriers to employment in the legal profession solely because of her gender. Many law firms were reluctant to hire women as lawyers at the time. Her first job after law school was as a deputy county attorney in San Mateo, California, a position she obtained only after initially offering to work without pay to prove her capabilities.

After marrying a Stanford classmate, Sandra moved to Arizona, where her career took off. She worked as an assistant attorney general before pursuing politics in the Arizona state senate, where she became the first woman to hold the position

of Majority Leader in any state senate.

On July 7, 1981, Ronald Reagan appointed Sandra Day O’Connor as the first woman on the United States Supreme Court. Justice O’Connor often relied on her unique upbringing when deciding cases. Her judicial philosophy was not easily classified along the conventional conservative-liberal spectrum. She was frequently the Justice who found the moderate “middle” on many controversial issues.

Sandra Day O’Connor died in December 2023. We lost a pioneering woman who blazed a trail that so many now follow. Her ashes are buried on a peaceful hilltop at the Lazy B Ranch where she grew up.

JOIN THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER: RELAY FOR LIFE

More than just a walk, the American Cancer Society Relay For Life brings together passionate supporters who embody the American Cancer Society vision to end cancer as we know it, for everyone. This volunteer-led experience unites communities to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer, and raise funds to improve the lives of people with cancer and their families through advocacy, research, and patient support, to ensure everyone has an opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and sur vive cancer.

The local installment of the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Relay For Life will take place at Cooper City High School on March 16th, 3:00 pm - 10:00 pm. It is open to everyone in the community. Relay For Life is a movement that unites survivors, caregivers, volunteers, and participants in the belief that the future can be cancer-free. With 2.5 million participants worldwide, it is the largest peer-to-peer fundraising event.

At Relay For Life events, individuals facing cancer are not alone. Each year, over 2,500 Relay events take place nationwide to support

and celebrate survivors and caregivers. These events offer special activities throughout the year, allowing survivors and caregivers to connect with others and access a strong support system.

No donation is too small. Each and every dollar counts. Donations help fund groundbreaking cancer research, patient care programs, and can make a difference in communities like ours. With every donation, you are helping the American Cancer Society save lives.

The "Broward Power" relay's fundraising goal for this year is $135,000. These funds are utilized to support cancer research, fund education programs, and provide services to cancer patients and their families.

The American Cancer Society's mission is more important than ever, as the needs of people facing cancer continue despite the ongoing crisis. Funds raised through Relay For Life help to sustain the Society's efforts in cancer research, providing a 24/7 helpline, and ensuring patients receive the care and support they need.

As we approach the spring season and prepare to spring forward for Daylight Savings Time, it is important to take some time to ensure our homes are safe and secure. Spending just an hour to review your home safety checklist can go a long way in protecting your loved ones and property. Here's a rundown of essential safety measures to consider:

First and foremost, let's talk about Smoke Alarms. The U.S. Fire Administration reports that most fires occur in residential settings. Shockingly, three out of five home fire deaths happen in homes without functional smoke alarms. Ensure you have smoke alarms installed in every bedroom and common area on each level of your home. It is vital to test the batteries in your smoke alarms monthly and replace them at least once a year. If you're a Weston resident needing assistance with battery replacement, reach out

to the Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Department in Weston at 954-3892090 for support.

Next up, Carbon Monoxide Detectors. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer, being both colorless and odorless. Install carbon monoxide detectors in central locations and on every floor of your home. Just like smoke alarms, test the batteries in your carbon monoxide detectors monthly and replace them annually.

Thirdly, take time to review your Family Emergency Plan. This encompasses your home fire safety plan, first aid supplies, and emergency house file. Ensure your fire safety plan includes at least two exit routes from each room and a designated family meeting point outside in case of a fire emergency. Regularly practice fire drills with your family to reinforce the plan. Check your first aid kits for necessary supplies and consider assembling an emergency

house file containing important documents like insurance policies, wills, and medical directives for easy access during emergencies. For additional information on how to create your family’s fire safety plan, please contact the BSO Fire Departments Public Educator in Weston at 954-991-3501.

Lastly, spring cleaning isn't just for tidying up your home; it is also an opportunity to declutter your medicine cabinet. Safely dispose of expired or unwanted medications by participating in Broward Sheriff’s Office Operation Medicine Cabinet (OMC) events. Additionally, if you have old personal documents such as financial statements or receipts that need shredding, take advantage of Shred-A-Thon events. Both services are free and open to Broward County residents. Please refer to www.sheriff.org for upcoming dates and location sites near you.

The Dreaded Plantar Fasciitis

The plantar fascia is a tight band of connective tissue which links the ball of the foot to the base of the heel. You can visualize the structure in your arch by holding the foot 90° to the leg and bending the great toe backwards. Imagine this structure as being a cable which maintains the integrity of the arch. Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of this connective tissue usually located at its weakest link, at the bottom of the heel. Debate continues regarding its exact cause, but some researchers feel that it is a result of some type of overuse mechanism such as a sudden change in shoe gear, ambulating barefoot especially on hard surfaces, females who are postpartum or runners increasing their training intensity too rapidly. Several studies have pointed at a common thread between patients who have this problem, and that is a shortened or tight calf muscle. Plantar Fasciitis may be particularly notable in females who wear or work in high heel shoes. After several hours of standing in high heels, the hamstring and calf muscles become acclimated to a shortened position. Upon returning home the shoes are often traded for a flat heel at which time the person may walk, exercise or run without a good warm-up or stretch. Symptoms will often present as a dull aching pain in the arch and in later stages progress to acute pain in the heel. This is the point at which the plantar fascia attaches to the bone. Pain may become debilitating and not only experienced during walking or running but especially during the first few steps out of bed in the morning or when rising out of a chair. It is often likened to a nail being driven through the center of the heel forcing patients to walk with a limp or even resort to using a cane. Plantar fasciitis is a very common condition seen in both athletes and sedentary people. Studies show that rapid aggressive treatment in the initial stages yields the best outcome. Unfortunately, studies also show that a successful response to conservative treatment diminishes after a period of 6-8 months.

Initial Treatment

Unfortunately, there is no quick solution to this problem, and overcoming plantar fasciitis requires some homework. The initial phase of treatment revolves around eliminating the symptoms. Athletes may apply heat prior to exercising then switching to ice massage after the activity. If pain is particularly acute then impact-related exercises such as running or jumping should be discontinued for a few weeks. At times the foot is immobilized to reduce the inflammation until pain can be controlled. I have found that the stairmaster may aggravate the condition as well. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories such Alleve, or Motrin can be used initially but chronic use of these agents is to be avoided as they may actually mask telltale symptoms. Patients with stomach ulcers or blood thinners should avoid nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories. Occasionally

in severe cases, a physician may elect to inject a steroid into the heel to reduce inflammation and improve symptoms. This is done with the caveat that chronic use of these agents may predispose the plantar fascia to rupture. Over-the-counter orthotics are usually very beneficial, but more complex foot type may require a molded orthotic.

Yet most agree that the crux of treatment and prevention of plantar fasciitis requires appropriate, focused and consistent static stretching exercises aimed at relaxing the calf muscle. This enhances repair of damaged collagen in the plantar fascia. There are several adjunctive devices on the market which are quite effective at accomplishing this, including the Prostretch wheel, various types of nightsplints or adjustable dorsiflexion stockings such as the Strasburg sock. Vigorous stretching is to be avoided in the acutely painful heel. In these instances, immobilization or at best very light passive stretching and range of motion techniques are employed while sports activity is discontinued temporarily. Beware; a small percentage of heel pain unresponsive to traditional treatment may be a result of misdiagnosed stress fractures, inflammatory arthritis, nerve problems or even partial or complete tears of the plantar fascia. A proper history and MRI study is indicated to fully evaluate these recalcitrant cases. Other treatment adjuncts include wearing supportive shoes with adequate heel cushioning. I prefer the Hoka One/ One, or one of the New Balance Fresh Foam series with a stiffer midsole. One should avoid walking barefoot on hard surfaces such as tile or hardwood floors. The OOFOS, Hoka or Fit Flop sandals work particularly well and should be used at home when not wearing shoes.

ESWT (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy)

Patients who are unresponsive to the initial treatment of plantar fasciitis may be candidates for extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT). ESWT or lithotripsy was initially used to fracture painful kidney stones which allow them to pass through the ureter. Within the past several years ESWT has been implemented in several orthopedic conditions such as chronic plantar fasciitis with

very positive results. Literature suggests that it may be an effective nonsurgical modality for the treatment of patients with recalcitrant chronic plantar fasciitis. ESWT focuses controlled shock waves at the area of maximal tenderness. It is speculated that shockwaves may induce an inflammatory mediated healing response. ESWT allows immediate return to activity with the exception of running and jumping sports for a few weeks. Generally, 4-5 weekly sessions are required.

PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma)

PRP or platelet rich plasma has been used to manage dermatologic and oral maxillofacial conditions since 1950. More recently interest has grown exponentially in the use of this technique for orthopedic applications such as plantar fasciitis. Media attention to this treatment modality has been reported due to its popularity with professional athletes. With this technique, a patient’s own blood is separated using a technique referred to as plasmapheresis into white blood cells, red blood cells, plasma and platelets. The technique extracts healing proteins such as platelet derived growth factor, vascular endothelial cell growth factor, and basic fibroblasts which can be detected in high concentrations. Consequently, investigators theorized that PRP may be beneficial in conditions that require tissue healing. PRP is injected into the plantar fascia guided with ultrasound or fluoroscopy. A series of three injections scheduled weekly are usually used.

EPF (Endoscopic Plantar Fascial Release)

Regrettably, a very small percentage of patients with plantar fasciitis will not respond to six to eight months of conservative treatment. For these patients, some may opt for a more definitive form of treatment which uses a procedure referred to as an endoscopic plantar fascial release (EPF). In this procedure approximately 33 to 50% of the plantar fascia is released from its connection to the heel using microincisions. They are allowed to walk in a healing boot for four weeks and transition to a running shoe to allow the plantar fascia to heal properly. The plantar fascia serves an important function during walking and running and its release may result in temporary residual side effects which are eventually overcome. For this reason, surgery is to be considered as a last resort but in most cases, if performed correctly may provide gratifying results with reported satisfaction rates of 80- 90%

Meet a Wellpath Healthcare Hero from Broward County

Broward County Jails

Systemwide Behavioral Health Director

How long have you been at Wellpath?

I have been with Wellpath since 2018. Previously I was with the company from 2006-2011 as the Mental Health Director at the Shelby County Jail in Memphis. How did you get into correctional medicine?

I was lucky enough to get into corrections when I moved to Memphis from South Florida in 2006. The opportunity interested me as my background at that point was in acute care psych hospitals and forensic psychology. I saw

correctional mental health as the perfect blend of both of those backgrounds.

What is your why? What gets you up every day to do this important work?

“We have the privilege of being able to help anyone in our care who wants the help and is willing to work with us. We change lives for the better.”

I have worked in a number of settings and have learned I am happiest when my work is mission-driven. We provide services to people who often don’t receive adequate help when in the community. We have the privilege of being able to help anyone in our care who wants the help and is willing to work with us. We change lives for the better.

What is most rewarding about this work?

It is rewarding to see many people who come into our care with mental health challenges accept our care and leave the jail much healthier and more stable. We try to give them hope. That’s why our mantra is “To Hope and Healing.”

What kind of mental healthcare heroes do the best in this unique setting?

People who are not judgmental, work well in a team, want to help the underprivileged and underserved, and understand that anybody can end up in our setting. We must treat our patients like we would want to be treated if we ended up here.

long with many other parents, you may be concerned with your child’s finger sucking, thumb sucking or pacifier use. The majority of children will have one of these oral habits until two years of age. The shadows of prenatal thumb sucking have been seen on sonograms for years. Newer 3-D imaging technology allows for vivid evidence of prenatal thumb sucking. Sucking is a natural reflex that helps to soothe infants and provides a sense of security.

Problems arise when these habits are carried on beyond the age of two. This may result in a negative affect on development of the upper and lower jaws as well as the eventual alignment of the teeth. The amount of facial/dental changes will depend upon the duration and force of the habit. One common affect of a sucking habit is the formation of an “open bite.” This is a “malocclusion” (bite problem) characterized by a vertical space between the upper and lower front teeth.

Another resulting bite problem is a cross-bite. This is seen as a backwards relation of the back teeth. The upper teeth will be positioned closer to the tongue than the lower teeth. Others may simply notice a “buck” appearance of the upper front teeth. Such conditions may possibly lead to self conscious feelings, social ridicule by peers and may result in speech problems or functional disorders later in life.

We are commonly asked whether one habit is better than another. Pacifier use seems to be the lesser of the “evils.” We notice less constriction of the palate with pacifier use and it is the habit more easily broken. Put another way, we cannot simply throw out a thumb or a finger as may be done with a pacifier. In either case, it is of utmost importance that an oral habit is broken long before the eruption of permanent teeth, which usually occurs between the ages of 6-7.

Most children stop oral habits on their own or with the help of their parents’ positive “big boy/big girl” reinforcement. We recommend that parents remember to praise your child for not sucking their thumb/ finger instead of scolding them when they are. Try to alleviate anxiety and insecurities that may be causing the necessity to soothe this way. Peer pressure of school aged children also helps the older thumb/ finger suckers to stop. Home remedies include covering the hand with a sock, use of long sleeve night shirt with sleeves sewn closed, or rubbing aloe on the culprit thumb/finger. If attempts at habit correction fail or you begin to notice the dental/skeletal effects of these habits, it is advisable to consult with your local pediatric dentist or orthodontist. Prevention is the key! .

How to Grip a Golf Club Correctly

The golf grip is often overlooked when trying to cure a slice or any other problem with a shot for that matter. Knowing the correct way to grip a golf club could help you see an end to your hooks and slices and have you on your way to a lower handicap.

One thing I often see when people have problems with their grip is they tend to hold it too much in their palm. Gripping the golf club too much in the palm leads to a loss of wrist action, which is a great source of power. Limiting the wrist action will lead to a loss of power and feel in the golf club. The fingers are the most sensitive parts of our hands. Placing the golf club more in the fingers than the palms results in an increased amount of wrist hinge, which means longer tee shots and more feel.

You don’t have to grip it hard to hit it hard! So many times, I see people choking their clubs to death to try and hit it longer. In actual fact gripping the club this hard can seriously decrease the distance you get on your shots.

The Vardon grip is a popular way of holding the golf club and it is seen as a proper golf grip for distance. Many pros use this grip today, but it was made popular by a golfer known as Harry Vardon way back at the turn of the 20th century. This golf grip is taught by many professional golf instructors to beginners, and it’s ideal for getting players to grip the club in their fingers rather than their palms.

To use the Vardon grip, all you do is overlap the pinky of your trailing hand (in a right-handed golfer’s case, the right hand is the trailing hand) and place it between the middle and index finger of the lead hand (which is the left for a right-handed golfer). The lead hand thumb should fit in the lifeline of the trailing hand. This works especially well for players with large hands.

Make sure that when looking down at address, you can see the first two knuckles of your left hand and a “V” formed between the thumb and forefinger pointing toward your right shoulder. With the right hand, have the “V” pointing toward your chin or slightly to the right shoulder. Trust me, this works!

This Interlock grip literally locks the hands together, but the golfer also runs the risk of having the handle stray into the palms of the hands. People with medium sized hands, weak forearms and wrists, and beginners in many cases prefer this style of grip.

To apply the interlocking grip, you start off by taking the little finger on the trailing hand (the trailing hand is the right hand for right handed golfers) and intertwine it with the index finger on the lead hand. The lead hand’s thumb should fit perfectly into the lifeline of the trailing hand.

In every sport, physical strength and conditioning are important to succeed. Golf is no different. Strong forearms and wrists are essential for golf success and they play a huge part in developing a proper golf grip.
