O
n the morning of October 8th, the Islamist group Hamas carried out one of the worst terrorist attacks in recent history. The atrocities that took place are now well known and led to an unprecedented response from the Israeli military. Finding a silver lining to such a horrible course of events is almost impossible. Like many in America, we closely followed the early days of the war and discovered the story of one selfless grandfather’s efforts to rescue his son, daughter-in-law, and two granddaughters. Retired Israeli General Noam Tibon received a terrible phone call from his son, journalist Amir Tibon. Amir needed help. Hamas fighters had overrun his community, searching for people to take hostage or worse. Amir and his family live in Kibbutz Nahal Oz on the border of Gaza. “In every house in our community and other communities along the border with Gaza, there is a room that is built of very strong concrete that can withstand a direct hit from a mortar or a rocket,” said Amir in an interview with The Atlantic, “I’m in the room with my wife, and I hear the gunfire directly outside my window, as well as shouting.” They hid in the dark as the noise of war surrounded them. “Trust me, I will come,” Noam reassured his son, “Nobody, nobody, can stop me.” Noam then set out on perhaps the most crucial mission of his life: to save his family. He and his wife raced from Tel Aviv to Nahal Oz but had to stop to help survivors of the Nova music festival massacre. After delivering as many people as possible to a safe location away from the border, Tibon again drove toward the kibbutz where his family was hiding. Along the way, they encountered another group that needed help. Soldiers were under fire from Hamas fighters. Together with the soldiers, Noam ended the threat. Two of the soldiers, however, were wounded and needed care. Noam drove them back to where he had left his wife so the soldiers could be cared for. He then enlisted the help of another retired general, Israel Ziv. The two sixty-plus-year-old men set off again. They arrived at Nahal Oz about the same time as an Israeli paratrooper unit. They began the dangerous process of clearing the town of enemy fighters. Finally, ten hours after the ordeal started, Noam’s three-year-old granddaughter Galia heard her grandfather’s voice. “Saba higea,” she called out. “Grandfather is here.” Their family was saved. In our world’s darkest hours, remember: true heroes walk among us! (This story is based, in part, on an interview between Yair Rosenberg and Amir Tibon in The Atlantic.)

etty Officer 1st Class Alex Marron Diaz, a native of Davie, Florida, serves the U.S. Navy assigned to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam operating out of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Marron Diaz joined the Navy 14 years ago. Today, Marron Diaz serves as a master-at-arms. Growing up in Davie, Marron Diaz attended Western High School and graduated in 2008. Today, Marron Diaz relies upon skills and values similar to those found in Davie to succeed in the military. “Growing up I learned to persevere by any means, to never give up and to be grateful with what I had, no matter how little it was,” said Marron Diaz. "Those lessons have helped me get through tough times while serving in the Navy and while being on deployment overseas." These lessons have helped Marron Diaz while serving at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. Being stationed in Pearl Harbor, often referred to as the gateway to the Pacific in defense circles, means Marron Diaz is part of a team that is taking on new importance in America’s focus on strengthening alliances, modernizing capabilities, increasing capacities and maintaining military readiness in support of the National Defense Strategy. “The Navy is important to national defense because we have forces deployed around the world to ensure the safety of our citizens at home and to make our adversaries think twice before they act,” said Marron Diaz. With 90 percent of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to trained sailors and a strong Navy. "Our mission remains timeless - to provide our fellow citizens with nothing less than the very best Navy: fully combat ready at all times, focused on warfighting excellence, and committed to superior leadership at every single level," said Adm. Mike Gilday, Chief of Naval Operations. "This is our calling. And I cannot imagine a calling more worthy." Marron Diaz and the sailors they serve with have many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during their military service. “My proudest Navy accomplishment so far has been graduating from Small Arms Marksmanship and Crew-Served Weapons Instructor schools,” said Marron Diaz. "Those have been the hardest schools I have completed so far because they challenged me." As Marron Diaz and other sailors continue to train and perform missions, they take pride in serving their country in the United States Navy. “Serving in the Navy is a way of giving back to my country as well as showing appreciation for what the U.S. has done for me and my family,” said Marron Diaz. Marron Diaz is grateful to others for helping make a Navy career possible. “I would like to thank my wife for being by my side this whole time, for motivating me when I'm down and for all of her guidance,” added Marron Diaz. "I’d like to thank my parents for instilling good values that I carry with me to this day. My dad is a self-made businessman and because of his hard work, I had everything I wanted growing up. If you die without a will it is known as dying intestate. While many believe that their close family members “know what they want”, it doesn’t necessarily go your way without a valid will. Instead, their money and property are distributed according to Florida’s intestate succession laws, during a Probate action. In Florida, intestate succession hinges on whether a person is married and has children with their spouse. • If the decedent (one who has passed away) is married and they have children together, the spouse inherits 100 percent of the estate. • If the decedent is married and has children from a previous relationship, the spouse inherits 50 percent of the estate and their children receive the other 50 percent. But even if someone is fine with the state-imposed inheritance laws, a beneficiary will be required to go through the expensive and long process called “Probate.”. The law can only assume what you would want, but it may cause your wishes to go haywire. For instance, imagine you have been in a relationship without a formal marriage certificate for many years and love your partner dearly. If you pass without a will, that partner may not inherit according to intestacy laws. Florida places legally adopted children on the same level as biological children. But step-children will not inherit through intestacy laws.
WHAT IS A TRUST?
A basic Revocable Living Trust is a legal document that creates a relationship between you and a Trustee. You can name yourself as Trustee to manage your own assets. A Trustee will oversee and hold assets on your behalf during your lifetime and on behalf of your beneficiaries upon your passing. There are many different types of trusts such as irrevocable trusts, and a whole slew of alphabet soup trusts such as a SLAT, GRAT, or ILIT.
TRUST VS. WILL
Both trusts and wills determine who will receive your assets, yet the two remain very different. Unlike trusts, which can be used to avoid the probate process, a will cannot. Wills require probate to take effect as desired. I call a will a “Dear Judge Letter,” because a judge will need to review it, make sure it is signed correctly and contains all required elements. While wills take into effect after passing and are intended to support the wishes included in the will for the executors and heirs, trusts take effect once properly signed and are intended to have an impact both in life and in death. This means that a trust may include provisions that determine the steps that are to be taken in the case of mental or physical incapacitation.

The surprise cowardly strikes on Israel were unwarranted and a shock to the world. This war has brought great sadness to our community as we watch our allies being senselessly harmed through acts of violence that are unimaginable, yet we are watching them right in front of us. Anaerobic digestion is a process through which bacteria break down organic matter—such as animal manure, wastewater biosolids, and food wastes—in the absence of oxygen. Anaerobic digestion could move us closer to achieving ambitious sustainability goals by generating clean, local, renewable energy. I am looking forward to studying this further to determine its success. Many municipalities across the nation have turned to this system as a means of preserving the environment. As a matter of fact, there was a digester that was operated in Davie by one of our nurseries. It took in manure, cooking oil, landscape debris and food waste. It produced electricity. The biogas was used for fuel and the end product was a compost fertilizer which was used for the plants. Davie intends to have a biodigester at the Farm Park when it opens. A great idea sometimes takes a long time to gain acceptance. I have been talking about this for 20 years. Let’s get going!

(PART 2) How important are running shoes and what role do they play in preventing or even causing injury? Before answering this question, one must ponder this important point. Running requires conditioning and conditioning requires a consistent and deliberate training schedule. Running shoes are but an adjunct to avoiding injury. Who can forget the great Ethiopian marathoner Abebe Bakila who in 1960 won a gold medal in the Rome Olympics in 2:12 barefooted? To Africans, running barefoot is not a particularly unusual sight. Ethiopians and Kenyans are known to train barefoot and had been doing so since they were children because running is the sole source of transportation to and from school. The Tarahumara Indians in Copper Canyon New Mexico hunt deer for several days covering 100-200 miles of rocky mule track. These exceptional athletes would hunt deer by literally running them to exhaustion. The incredible feat is accomplished while wearing homemade sandals constructed from the treads of discarded truck tires. What is it that keeps the Indians and Africans from becoming injured in light of the fact that they are not wearing high-tech running shoes? The answer lies essentially in one word, conditioning. Running shoes are but half the battle against injury prevention, the other half requires a proper training schedule. While it’s true that our concrete jungles do not mimic the natural impact absorbing properties of soil and sand found in other regions, we nevertheless require the conditioning necessary by training smartly and safely. Novices quickly discover that the shoe is not a substitute for good training. That being said, the purpose of a running shoe is twofold. It is necessary to absorb impact and stabilize- or control unnecessary and abnormal motion of the foot in the shoe. Chronic overuse injuries generally occur because of excessive impact, excessive motion, or both. We describe the motion in the foot in terms of pronation (an excessive pronator has flat feet) and supination (an excessive supinator generally has high arched or cavus feet). Running shoes are designed to accommodate specific foot types, training distances, and body weight. They may also be used in certain circumstances to avoid or treat specific injuries. One needs to know how to match these features with

ike the answer to most medical questions, the answer is not so straightforward. There are many factors which go into the decision-making process. These factors include maturity/anxiety of the child, type of sedation available and financial resources available to the family. In our experience, the consideration of each of these variables is of utmost importance in consistently making the right decision for the pediatric dental patient. The first step in the process is to gather all of the available information. This is accomplished by performing a complete assessment of the patient. The information gathered includes the obvious dental needs, diet, home care, age, emotional maturity, and dental anxiety. Most decisions regarding the treatment plan can be made at this stage. For example, a two-year-old who suffers from carious lesions (cavities) on all primary (baby) teeth would likely require a more comprehensive sedation in order to complete the entire dental treatment in a non-traumatic manner. A child at this age does not have the cognitive and emotional ability to complete the treatment without potential long-term negative effects. In other words, without the right approach
