Wishing All A Bountiful Harvest

The month of October often conjures up images of harvests, autumn and falling leaves. Watching leaves turn red and fall is less of a common occurrence here than for our friends up north. Agriculture is, however, still an important part of Broward County and South Florida.

According to the USDA’s 2012 Census of Agriculture, there were almost 15 thousand acres of land being used for farming in Broward County. This farmland generates about $50 million a year in livestock and crop sales. These figures do not include the well-established horse economy in Plantation, Davie, and Southwest Ranches.

While most of Broward County is built out with neighborhoods, city parks, and commercial developments, there are still over 600 farms producing everything from bell peppers to beef. These farms preserve a past where much of West Broward was composed of ranches and orange groves.

There are a number of farms and nurseries where residents can buy locally-grown produce. Check out our calendar section each month to find farmers markets in your area.

Remember, October harvests happen in paradise, too!

Hollyweird Halloween

Hollywood’s 8th Annual Downtown Halloween Celebration promises to delight those of all ages. Both sides of Hollywood Blvd. between 19th and 20th streets will be closed for a super-sized block party. From 6-9 pm, the little ones can enjoy “Treat Street.” The interactive trick-or-treat area is free and offers plenty of candy stations, a bounce house, plenty of “selfie” spaces, a costume contest, kid-friendly entertainment, and so much more. Three Thrilling Halloween Haunts

Hollyweird Festival will be on October 28 from 6 pm - 2 am. The entire street in Downtown Hollywood will shut down for the event. There is something for everyone, with three live music stages, a DJ trailer, and a kid's stage by the playground at Anniversary Park. Starting at 7 p.m., there will be Kids' Costume Contests, with different age group categories. The Adult Costume Contests start at 11 p.m., with Funniest Costume, Weirdest Costume, Best Couples/Group, and Best Overall.

Do you want to go to the biggest Halloween party in Florida? Then make your way to Key West for Fantasy Fest , which is a TEN-day Halloween celebration. It runs from October 20 to October 29, and this year’s theme is Uniforms and Unicorns. This festival has been running for over 40 years, and people travel from all over the world to participate in the event. Make sure to check the website for all of the events going on each day, with the big finale on October 28, the Bud Light Fantasy Fest Parade. You can bring the kids, but you may have more fun without them!

Celebrating 40 Years

Founded in 1983 by four Cuban exile brothers, and named after their seaside neighborhood in Havana, Hollywood’s Miramar Cuban Bakery celebrates its 40th anniversary on October 15th. Known for its traditional treats, this local landmark is a favorite of South Floridians looking for a taste of Miami, without the traffic.

The bakery eventually changed ownership in 2006 when longtime customer, and City of Hollywood Police Officer, Alejandro Recio, purchased the business he loved so much.

“As a Cuban immigrant myself, Miramar Bakery was always the place I would go for Cuban coffee during my patrols. I would always tell the brothers, ‘I’m going to buy this place when I retire.’ And so, when I retired from the Hollywood Police Department after 25 years, I did just that.”

Originally located on the west side of 441, just south of Johnson Street, the State of Florida forced Miramar Bakery to relocate, via eminent domain, for the expansion of 441. Once a 1,000sf hole-in-the-wall, Miramar Bakery is now a 5,000sf retail and wholesale, food production and distribution facility.

“About ten years ago the State of Florida gave us lemons; it became our

job to make lemon mojitos. Our number one goal was to stay in Hollywood. Hollywood is the city we know and love; Hollywood is where I live and am raising my family. Operating in a different city would not have felt right. Thankfully, we found an available space on 441 less than a mile from our original location,” Chief Executive Officer Alex Recio said.

Miramar Bakery is now co-owned and operated by Alejandro’s son, CEO Alex Recio; nephew Anibal Perez; and niece Claudia Vazquez.

“After 40 years, I am most proud of how our company has become such an ingrained part of the Hollywood and Greater Broward County community,” Alex Recio said.

Hollywood Native Serves aboard USS Winston Churhill

Petty Officer 2nd Class Quincy Sebastian, a native of Hollywood, Florida, is serving aboard USS Winston S. Churchill, a U.S. Navy warship, operating out of Mayport, Florida.

Sebastian, a 2019 graduate of South Broward High School, joined the Navy four years ago.

“I joined the Navy to improve myself, and to learn new skills and ways of life,” said Sebastian.

Today, Sebastian relies upon skills and values similar to those found in Hollywood to succeed in the military.

“The lessons I learned from my hometown that have stayed with me while in the Navy are to not complain and to fight things out,” said Sebastian.

These lessons have helped Sebastian while serving in the Navy.

Winston S. Churchill is a guided-missile destroyer that provides a wide range of warfighting capabilities. The destroyer is a multi-mission ship that can operate independently or as part of a larger group of ships at sea. The ship is equipped with tomahawk missiles, torpedoes, guns and a phalanx close-in weapons system.

More than 300 sailors serve aboard Winston S. Churchill. Their jobs are highly specialized, requiring both dedication and skill. The jobs range from maintaining engines to handling weaponry along with a multitude of other assignments that keep the ship mission-ready at all times, according to Navy officials.

With 90 percent of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the Internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to trained sailors and a strong Navy.

"Our mission remains timeless - to provide our fellow citizens with nothing less than the very best Navy: fully combat ready at all times, focused on warfighting excellence, and committed to superior leadership at every single level," said Adm. Mike Gilday, Chief of Naval Operations. "This is our calling. And I cannot imagine a calling more worthy."

Serving in the Navy means Sebastian is part of a team that is taking on new importance in America’s focus on strengthening alliances, modernizing capabilities, increasing capacities and maintaining military readiness in support of the National Defense Strategy.

Sebastian and the sailors they serve with have many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during their military service.

“My proudest accomplishment is advancing in rank to petty officer second class,” said Sebastian. “I thought it was impossible because I was around people who were eight-year third classes and I made it in three years. It's hard advancing in rank as a culinary specialist in only three years.”

As Sebastian and other sailors continue to train and perform missions, they take pride in serving their country in the United States Navy.

“Serving in the Navy means to me what it should mean to anyone serving, and that’s being the best you can possibly be,” said Sebastian.

Sebastian is grateful to others for helping make a Navy career possible.

“I would like to thank my stepfather, Dwain Stevens, who encouraged me to join and my mother, Adina Stevens, for her love and support,” said Sebastian. “I would also like to thank Chief Amanda Smith serving on board Winston S. Churchill for her guidance and support in everything that I do.”

“I am going to be a recruit division commander at Great Lakes, Illinois, to lead future sailors in the making and advance to chief petty officer while I am there,” added Sebastian.

Art Follows Life at Hollywood Historical Society Re: Constructed Exhibit

The Hollywood Historical Society is privileged to present an art exhibition like no other, Re: Constructed, a selection of collages by Cuban-American visual and sound artist Richard Vergez. The fascinating collages each feature a deconstructed and reconstructed image of a historic building from the past of Hollywood, Florida. The exhibition will take place at the Hollywood Historical Society’s headquarters at the historic Hammerstein House at 1520 Polk

Street in downtown Hollywood.

Re: Constructed aims to creatively recall several iconic Hollywood buildings that no longer exist, providing a visual history lesson in what we have lost, and honoring these buildings in a new and different manner. The artist was given the freedom to reconstruct photos to his liking and visited the Hammerstein House multiple times to envision how he could use the space. The art and how it is displayed combine to establish the totality of the concept.

Vergez was born in Philadelphia, PA, lived and worked in New York as a member of the Brooklyn Collage Collective, and currently works and resides in South Florida. His background in graphic design and audio/ visual composition is reflected through his hand-made collaged works on paper and mixed media experiments. Vergez’s imagery combines both human and technological elements that relate to ideas surrounding our ever-evolving world.

He has exhibited in Brooklyn, London, Chicago, Miami, Sydney, Los Angeles, Stekene (Belgium) and Fort Lauderdale. His collage

illustrations have been published in the New York Times, The Guardian, and the Atlantic.

Re: Constructed will open on October 14th and will stay up until early next year. Hammerstein House is open the first Sunday of each month for viewing, and private group tours can also be arranged.

The art and other exhibitions are just a part of the Hollywood Historical Society’s agenda of activities and events supporting its mission to keep the City’s history alive for current and future generations. Awelcoming city includes welllit streets that improve pedestrian and vehicle visibility and a sense of personal security. When streets are properly lit, especially at crossings, it encourages residents to get out and walk, it improves security, and minimizes crime or vandalism.

During the outbound trip, the crew will conduct safety training and teach participants resource stewardship, including ethical fishing skills and ways to protect Florida's aquatic environments within our community. Participants will be able to fish along the coral reefs off Hollywood for approximately 3 hours. Bait, tackle, snacks, water, and lunch will be provided, and each participant will take home their own rod and reel. Awards will be given to anglers for Largest Fish, Smallest Fish, Most Unusual Fish, Most Fish, and more!

Over the past several years the city engaged Florida Power and Light to replace its traditional high-pressure sodium vapor (HPSV) fixtures with light emitting diode LED lighting in most areas of the city. The transition will now continue to take place as a way to improve light quality, increase visibility, and reduce energy costs, as the City is doing the same with the more than 2,000 City-owned fixtures.

In a recent evaluation of City-owned fixtures, which determined the number of fixtures, their existing conditions, ownership of the pole, and fixture type, 2,748 fixtures were identified as City-owned and in need of an update to LED. Replacement is set to being this fall, and while the poles themselves will not change in most instances, the fixture will change to accommodate LED technology. Following the upgrades, residents will notice brighter, whiter light directed toward the street.

Kids Offshore Fishing Tournament

If you know of a child that loves fishing, you’ll be happy to learn that the Parks, Recreation & Cultural Arts Department and the Marine Advisory Board are hosting the 2nd annual “Offshore Kids Fishing Tournament” on Saturday, October 21st, 2023. The tournament will provide a unique hands-on experience for youths between ages 10 to 17 years old.

This year, the tournament’s registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the Lady Pamela Marina, located at 5400 North Ocean Drive. After registration, the participants will take part in a 30-minute fishing clinic conducted by the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) and local marine experts.
