Pink October: Honoring Resilience & Care

October heralds the arrival of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Every year, the world witnesses unexpected bursts of pink, from high school footballers donning pink socks in tribute to their mother’s battles to colleagues sporting pink ribbons on their attire. Honoring Heroes and Remembering 9/11: Miramar's New Memorial Monument

In a solemn and heartfelt ceremony, the City of Miramar recently unveiled its new 9/11 memorial monument, paying tribute to the nearly 3,000 individuals who tragically lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on American soil 22 years ago. The monument, located in Miramar Regional Park, stands as a powerful symbol of remembrance and gratitude, not only for the victims of 9/11 but also for the courageous veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country.

At the heart of this memorial stand two massive steel beams, each weighing a staggering 82,000 pounds. These beams are not ordinary steel; they are remnants from the Twin Towers in New York City, a poignant connection to the fateful day that changed the world. These rusted and mangled columns, delivered to Miramar in 2011, now stand side by side, echoing the parallel stature of the Twin Towers they once were part of. They rest atop a pentagon-shaped base, constructed with concrete and stone.

“It’s an honor to support our Miramar Fire Department, who sought for years to find a home for our city’s 9/11 memorial,” said Miramar Mayor Wayne M. Messam in a written statement. “A fitting tribute was needed to immortalize the sacrifices of a few that secured the freedom of many. This memorial will serve as a hallowed ground where generations can come, reflect and be reminded of the unwavering spirit of the United States.”

During the unveiling ceremony, emotions ran deep as veterans and first responders shared their experiences and reflections. John Stone, a Pentagon first responder, recounted his harrowing memories of those dark days, emphasizing the enduring impact of that moment in history.

The ceremony also included poignant moments such as the delivery of the Firefighter's Prayer and the Police Officer's Prayer. A moment of silence was observed, marking the exact times when each of the two World Trade Center towers was struck by the terrorist attacks.

"Army Staff Sgt. Juan L. Rivadeneira of Davie was killed when an insurgent suicide bomber detonated a vest bomb and struck his unit in Kandahar, Afghanistan. He was 27

years old. Army Corporal Jorge E. Villacis of Sunrise died when his unit was attacked by an insurgent with a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device," Congresswoman Debbie Wassermann Schultz said, remembering those from South Florida who lost their lives in service during Operation Enduring Freedom, which was initiated in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. "They made the ultimate sacrifice, not returning to their families, because they fought to protect ours."

Additionally, a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter performed a moving flyover at 9:03 a.m.,

the moment when United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center, instantly claiming the lives of all passengers on board and an unknown number of individuals within the tower. Miramar's new 9/11 memorial serves as a timeless reminder of the resilience of a nation and the indomitable spirit of its heroes. It stands as a place of reflection, honor, and unity for the community, ensuring that the sacrifices made on that fateful day will never be forgotten.

The service offers direct travel from the NEW Miramar Park-and-Ride, the park-and-ride at Miramar Regional Park, or the park and ride at C.B. Smith Park to Downtown Miami or the Miami Medical District (Civic Center). South Florida Express Coach is funded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), is operated by Broward County Transit, and continually receives rave reviews.

Fast, Comfortable, and Convenient

The Express Coaches are used primarily by riders who own their own cars but welcome the convenience, comfort, and cost savings of commuting in coach-style buses. One-way fares are as little as $2.25. The coaches over free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, charging stations, and comfortable seating. The coaches travel in the express lanes for faster, more reliable travel times. And park-and-ride parking is FREE!

Commuters can also take comfort in knowing that life’s little emergencies are not an issue, thanks to FDOT’s Guaranteed Ride Home program. This government-funded program will cover the cost of an Uber, Lyft, or taxi ride if the Express Coach is unavailable, and you need to either leave work early for an emergency or have to stay late for unscheduled overtime.

A Better Way to Commute

This premium transit service is designed to get commuters from Western Broward County to their places of employment in Miami-Dade County quickly and reliably. The coaches have two service times: in the morning, to get to work and in the evening to get back home. Morning service starts as early as 5:10am, and afternoon service runs from 3:05pm to 8:43pm.

The Express Coach system is a core component of the express lanes along I-95, I-595, and I-75 (I-75 is coming soon). The

BEST OF PEMBROKE PINES

The City of Miramar is voicing significant concerns regarding MiamiDade County's plans to construct a new waste-to-energy plant, commonly referred to as a "Mass Burn Facility," near the border of West Miramar, specifically at the old Opa-Locka West Airport (OLWA). This initiative is intended to replace the Doral incinerator, which notoriously caught fire. In a recent integrated solid waste disposal report presented to the Miami-Dade County Commission, three potential sites were outlined for the new facility, with OLWA emerging as the favored location.

Mayor Wayne M. Messam expressed his apprehensions, highlighting the lack of prior notification to the city about this consequential recommendation. He stated, "The absence of prior communication from Miami-Dade County is deeply troubling. This location is in proximity to numerous Miramar families. I question the data that led to selecting the OpaLocka West Airport as the preferred site. Vital information regarding its potential impact on our residents' health, the purity of Everglades surface water, and essen -

tial site studies like wind flow patterns is conspicuously missing."

The Doral incinerator has been associated with emissions of pollutants linked to severe health hazards, including cancer, respiratory issues, and reproductive health risks. Additionally, insights from the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA) underscore that incinerating waste hinders efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contributes to air and water pollution.

Mayor Messam added, "As the Mayor of Miramar, with the unanimous support of the City Commission, we are actively engaging with Miami-Dade County officials to reconsider this decision. There are other viable locations for such a facility. If newer technologies indeed enhance safety, then why not explore areas like Coral Gables, Aventura, or Miami Beach? Our dedication to the safety and well-being of Miramar residents remains paramount."

It is crucial to note that the OLWA site is less than a mile from West Miramar, where hundreds of families reside. The

absence of a comprehensive notification system by Miami-Dade County to both residents and Miramar officials before finalizing the location choice is a source of contention. Data reveals that the previous location of the mass burn facility in Doral was established before residential development. However, in the case of the proposed OLWA site, residential areas predated the facility.

GAIA has stressed that incineration methods can exacerbate climate-related issues. Many cities worldwide are adopting zero-waste policies as a more sustainable alternative. Additionally, the proximity of the proposed site to the Everglades National Park raises environmental concerns, particularly in light of the potential damage that a situation like the Doral fire could inflict.

The City of Miramar is advocating for more extensive studies and deliberation before finalizing the site for the Mass Burn Facility. The city's commitment remains unwavering in safeguarding the safety, health, and environmental welfare of its residents.

Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation for Advanced and Oligo-Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer

Dr. Donoway is using multi-modality therapy combining Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation with chemoimmuno-radio therapy to treat advanced-stage cancer patients worldwide after they have stopped responding to the standard of care therapy and have been left with few options for further treatment.

With over 32 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in south Florida, Dr. Donoway recognized that because of late diagnosis, up to 85% of patients treated for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis. This fact limited the benefit many patients might receive from pancreatic surgery, which is problematic as surgery has long been held to be the only reproducible therapy for a cure. In reality, surgery is currently more likely Palliative in almost 80% of the cases. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating NanoKnife surgery with chemotherapy and now supplemented with immunotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially when compared to chemotherapy alone.

Dr. Donoway has been a pioneer in using pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex cases. During the past decade, patients worldwide have traveled to benefit from this

groundbreaking treatment by Dr. Donoway, which is FDA-approved. Dr. Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, Breast, and sarcomas, using NanoKnife Surgery based on its FDA-approved guidelines. Patients experience a brief recovery, which means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation much sooner.

Dr. Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating Pancreatic cancer. The treatment history has been largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 10% five-year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, we’re all confirming Einstein‘s definition of insanity.” Dr. Donoway is involved in ongoing research in identifying the best chemo-immuno therapy and sequencing to be used along with Pancreatic nanoKnife/ IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “the results so far have been very encouraging, and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over nine years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE, they would have lived a little over a year, so this technique opens a new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.”

Below is information on some of the services/programs offered:

Vacation Watch

Our FREE Vacation Patrol Program helps prevent residential burglaries. We check on your home daily, while you are out of town, and look out for any suspicious activity. Visit miramarmp.org and click on services to enroll.

Citizens’ Police Academy

A FREE 14-week course for residents, the Citizens’ Police Academy provides operational information about the Miramar Police Department. The course includes a CSI demonstration, CPR certification, K-9 demonstration, a ride-along and presentations from our Traffic Unit, Detective Bureau, Training Unit, and more. Our Hispanic Outreach Law Enforcement Academy, “HOLA,” is available for our Spanish language speakers and our SecureBiz sessions for businesses includes physical safety, active shooter, cybersecurity, fraud, and crisis management. Police Explorer Program

The Police Explorer program has been an integral part of our organization for more than 40 years. The program is offered for the youth in our community, age 14 to 20 (enrollment must be completed prior to the age of 18). The program builds character, while providing training and education on law enforcement and the complexities of police service. Autism Outreach Program

The Miramar Police Department's Autism Outreach Program will allow officers to better serve those in our community who live on the spectrum. Through this program, we hope to maintain a database of Autistic individuals we may interact with in hopes of improving our response. This program allows officers who are responding to an incident, involving a person with Autism, to appropriately prepare for and handle the situation. S.A.L.T

The Seniors and Law Enforcement Together (S.A.L.T) program was designed to connect officers with seniors in our community, to discuss crime prevention and law enforcement issues of interest. The program hosts events at local places of worship and quarterly at the Miramar Multi-Service Complex.

Chaplaincy Program

The Miramar Police Department’s Volunteer Chaplains Unit was established to provide aid and comfort to those in need and to provide a calm and thoughtful presence in times of stress, hardship and grief. The chaplains are trained clergy or lay pastors of a recognized religious denomination, who are active in their local churches, but serve in a nondenominational role when representing the police department. Security Surveys

Celebrate the Fall at Flamingo Gardens’ Harvest Festival

Flamingo Gardens celebrates the arrival of fall in South Florida with Harvest Festival Weekends. Each Harvest Festival weekend in October is themed and will feature entertainment, fun activities, and specialty Fall foods; guests are encouraged to dress up to each week’s theme.

Harvest Festival is a time to celebrate the cooling weather and enjoy the wonderful our wonderful environment. There will be hayrides, pony rides, farm animal encounters, costume contests, and much more.

Guests may also enjoy viewing Masters of the Night: The True Story of Bats which will be on display in the Gallery at Flamingo Gardens through January 28, 2024. Often misunderstood as large, blind, squeaky, creatures who suck blood and get tangled in your hair, this exhibit debunks myths and opens your eyes to the wondrous world of Bats.

Harvest Festival Weekend Activities:

October 7 & 8: Pirates Weekend. Music provided by DJ Digital Anarchy Noon – 3pm, live interactive Pirate Encampment with fun family activities all day.

October 14 & 15: Cirque de Flamingo Weekend. Live entertainment provided by the Florida Children’s Theatre Circus Spectacular from Noon – 3pm. Watch thrilling feats of balance and skill and then try your hand as you learn from the performers.

October 21 & 22: Cowboys & Cowgirls Weekend. Live entertainment by the South Florida Cloggers from Noon – 3pm. Learn from the dancers in between their performances. Visit with a real Rodeo Cowgirl and her horse from 10:30am-4:30pm and hear all about rodeo life and the cowboy/ girl lifestyle.

October 28 & 29: Halloween Weekend. Music provided by the Sekond Nature Band

from Noon – 3pm and visit with some of Flamingo Gardens’ own not-too-spooky Animal Ambassadors. Times TBD.
