Remember, True Heroes Walk Among Us!

O

n the morning of October 8th, the Islamist group Hamas carried out one of the worst terrorist attacks in recent history. The atrocities that took place are now well known and led to an unprecedented response from the Israeli military. Finding a silver lining to such a horrible course of events is almost impossible. Like many in America, we closely followed the early days of the war and discovered the story of one selfless grandfather’s efforts to rescue his son, daughter-in-law, and two granddaughters. Retired Israeli General Noam Tibon received a terrible phone call from his son, journalist Amir Tibon. Amir needed help. Hamas fighters had overrun his community, searching for people to take hostage or worse. Amir and his family live in Kibbutz Nahal Oz on the border of Gaza. “In every house in our community and other communities along the border with Gaza, there is a room that is built of very strong concrete that can withstand a direct hit from a mortar or a rocket,” said Amir in an interview with The Atlantic, “I’m in the room with my wife, and I hear the gunfire directly outside my window, as well as shouting.” They hid in the dark as the noise of war surrounded them. “Trust me, I will come,” Noam reassured his son, “Nobody, nobody, can stop me.” Noam then set out on perhaps the most crucial mission of his life: to save his family. He and his wife raced from Tel Aviv to Nahal Oz but had to stop to help survivors of the Nova music festival massacre. After delivering as many people as possible to a safe location away from the border, Tibon again drove toward the kibbutz where his family was hiding. Along the way, they encountered another group that needed help. Soldiers were under fire from Hamas fighters. Together with the soldiers, Noam ended the threat. Two of the soldiers, however, were wounded and needed care. Noam drove them back to where he had left his wife so the soldiers could be cared for. He then enlisted the help of another retired general, Israel Ziv. The two sixty-plus-year-old men set off again. They arrived at Nahal Oz about the same time as an Israeli paratrooper unit. They began the dangerous process of clearing the town of enemy fighters. Finally, ten hours after the ordeal started, Noam’s three-year-old granddaughter Galia heard her grandfather’s voice. “Saba higea,” she called out. “Grandfather is here.” Their family was saved. In our world’s darkest hours, remember: true heroes walk among us! (This story is based, in part, on an interview between Yair Rosenberg and Amir Tibon in The Atlantic.)

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE IN EARLY EDUCATION

A WORLD OF KNOWLEDGE Bringing the World to your Child

A

World of Knowledge Learning Center kicks off the new school year celebrating 20 years serving the young children in the communities of Pembroke Pines, Miramar and surrounding cities. “For the past two decades, we have been blessed with the opportunity of seeing young children build a strong academic foundation through music and play. One of the main goals of the school is to embrace diversity and help young children learn about the different cultures that make up our world. Our lessons truly bring the world to your child’s learning experience throughout the year in an exciting way,” says Elizabeth Gonzalez, Owner/Director of the school. A World of Knowledge was a pioneer in introducing VPK to the community and one of the largest providers in Broward since the program’s inception in 2005. Between 100 - 150 students graduate from the program each year and enter Kindergarten with high reading and math levels. Principals and teachers in the surrounding public schools, highly recommend A World of Knowledge Learning Center because the students are prepared academically, socially and emotionally as they begin their elementary school journey. For almost 20 years, the center under the direction of Elizabeth Gonzalez, has introduced the concepts of letters, sounds, and higher order critical thinking skills in a fun, interactive and engaging way for students starting at the age of one. The school is recognized by many parents and educators as #1 Choice for QUALITY in Early Learning and has been named BEST PRESCHOOL in Pembroke Pines three years in a row. Our teachers are certified and experienced teachers who have a passion for teaching young children and helping them achieve their highest potential even at a young age.

16 / Our City Pembroke Pines / November 2023 / OurCityMedia.com

“The BEST COMPLIMENT I can receive, comes from our parents, when they share success stories of their children in school, and attribute those successes to the foundation they received at A World of Knowledge.” said Ms. Gonzalez. A World of Knowledge offers an accelerated learning program which allows children to explore everyday concepts at their pace, in a fun way allowing them to reach their higher potential. Children attending our PreK1 -PreK4 program are engaged in numerous phonemic awareness activities that will help them achieve success in reading at a young age. Gonzalez proudly adds: “Our success with the children is based on our teaching styles, low child to teacher ratio, staff dedication and the unique multicultural themes and concepts which were created specifically for our school. Multicultural Awareness, Character education, values and etiquette are also essential components of our curriculum.”

Pembroke Pines Honors Heroes:

O

A Century of Veterans' Legacy

n Saturday, November 11, 2023, the community is warmly invited to a poignant Veterans Day Observance at the Charles F. Dodge City Center Memorial Park, conveniently situated opposite 601 City Center Way. This solemn ceremony, scheduled for Noon, seeks to honor and extend heartfelt gratitude to the brave men and women who've dedicated their lives to serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. This meaningful event, generously sponsored by Baptist Health, will be adorned with the presentation of colors, soulful musical renditions, and enlightening talks by guest speakers. A bit of history: Veterans Day, a federal holiday in the U.S., originally commenced as Armistice Day. This designation was chosen because November 11 marks the historic anniversary of the signing of the Armistice, the document which heralded the end of the harrowing World War I

in 1918. However, a shift in perception occurred in 1954 when the name was changed to "Veterans Day". This alteration was done to broaden the remembrance, ensuring it recognized all American veterans from every conflict and war. Fast forward to 2016, a significant addition was made with the introduction of the Veterans Day Moment of Silence Act. This act encourages all U.S. residents to pause for two minutes of contemplative silence on Veterans Day, precisely at 3:11 pm, Atlantic Standard Time. This ritual is more than a tradition; it's a national gesture of respect and appreciation for the countless sacrifices made by veterans throughout the country's history. Pembroke Pines Veterans Park was officially dedicated on November 11, 2006. It was created to honor and remember those who served in the United States Armed Forces. The park

serves as a location for various events, ceremonies, and gatherings, especially on significant days like Memorial Day and Veterans Day, to pay tribute to veterans. If you need more specific details or information about the park, contacting the City of Pembroke Pines directly or checking their official website might be helpful.

Organic Oasis

Pembroke Pines’ Community Garden

T

he City of Pembroke Pines Landscape Advisory Board and the Parks and Recreation Department maintain the City’s Community Garden located at The Howard C. Forman Health Campus at 8500 E. Cypress Drive. The Community Garden is a Pines Residents Only member-based green space where the residents of Pembroke Pines can have the opportunity to come together to grow fresh produce, share the joys of gardening, build relationships, and engage in healthy activity. Community gardens are a wonderful amalgamation of environmental, economic, health, social, and aesthetic benefits. Environmentally, they enhance local biodiversity by supporting a diverse range of flora and fauna. The plants they house play a pivotal role in improving air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, and over time, they can even remediate polluted soils. By growing produce locally, these gardens cut down the need for extensive transportation, effectively reducing

the community's carbon footprint. Economically speaking, they offer dual benefits: households can save money by growing their own produce, and some gardens even boost the local economy by selling their yield. From a health perspective, the fresh, often organic produce from community gardens can be a cornerstone for better nutrition. Furthermore, the very act of gardening promotes physical well-being and has profound therapeutic effects, acting as a balm for conditions like anxiety and depression. Membership The City’s Community Garden includes raised garden beds and a section where fruit trees and other crops can be grown. Annual membership fees for a garden plot are $60 for a 4 x 24 foot plot, $40 for a 4 x 16 foot plot, and $20 for a 4 x 8 foot plot. Plot owners are responsible for fertilizing, planting, weeding, mulching, harvesting, watering their area, and gardening tools.

Community Garden Committee The Community Garden Committee is made up of all members. There are three annually elected board members who obtain additional responsibilities: garden coordinator, garden steward, and secretary. All members must join one of the several garden committees and all members must help in maintaining the common areas. Organic Regulation The Community Garden is intended to be an “organic” garden project. Only organic pesticides may be used in the garden. Any inorganic chemical products must be approved by the committee prior to use.

■ MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Pembroke Pines

UPDATE W By Mayor Frank C. Ortis

e started this month off on a positive note with “Extra Mile Day,” which is November 1, 2023 and recognizes that all people can create positive change in themselves, their families, organizations and communities by going the extra mile in their lives. I know that as Mayor of our great City of Pembroke Pines, it is always my goal to go the extra mile for our residents and businesses. I encourage everyone to go the extra mile in their pursuit of and in their lives, adding volunteerism and service to help our communities. I am proud to say that we are a very generous city, especially at this time of year. For the past 20 years, The Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center, located at 301 NW 103 Ave., has joined together with schools, businesses, and residents, to gather donations for the Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. For 100 families in the Pembroke Pines Community, assisted by these donations, this program makes this holiday time very special. The donations provide qualifying families with generously filled bins of non-perishable foods (canned and dried), turkeys and much more to ensure a bountiful Thanksgiving meal. Donations must be in no later than Thursday, November 9, 2023, and can be dropped off at the Center. For more information, please call 954-450-6888 I hope to see everyone at this year’s Veterans Day Observance on Wednesday, November 11, 2023, at noon at the Charles F. Dodge City Center Memorial Park, located across from 601 City Center Way to honor and recognize the men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. The ceremony will feature the presentation of colors, musical performances, and guest speakers. And, save the date for one of the most favorite events of the year – Snowfest. Pembroke Pines residents are welcome to join the City of Pembroke Pines Recreation and Cultural Arts Department for this holiday evening of fun on Saturday, December 2, 2023, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Charles F. Dodge City Center, located at 601 City Center Way. Santa and all his cool friends will be on hand as children have a chance to play in tons of snow, the air will also be filled with the sounds of the holidays with over 300 singers and dancers on the holiday stage, and snow flurries will fly through the air throughout the event. The Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony will take place at 6:30 p.m. There will be free parking, free rides and free activities. Concessions will be available for purchase. The event is open for residents only and tickets are required. For ticket details, please visit www.ppines. com/specialevents, follow the City’s social media on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter (X) and Next Door or contact the Special Events office at 954-392-2116

I would like to wish you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving and as always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Use in the Foot & Ankle

H

ealing after an injur y involves a well-orchestrated and complex series of events where proteins in the blood act as messengers to regulate the entire process. Many proteins involved in the healing process are derived from small cell fragments in the blood called platelets. Platelets are small, colorless, cell fragments present in the blood. They are formed in the bone mar-row and are freely passing through the bloodstream in a resting state. However, when an injury occurs, the platelets become activated and start to gather at the injury site to release beneficial proteins called growth factors. This is the beginning of the healing process. For many years, blood components derived from the patient and then delivered to the site of injury have created growing interest for use in orthopedic procedures. New research and technology have expanded the application of this therapy for use in

By Dr. John Goodner orthopedic procedures. What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)? Platelet Rich Plasma is a concentration of platelets and growth factors created from a small amount of your own blood. Increased levels of growth factors have the potential to improve signaling and recruitment of cells. What conditions can it treat? PRP can be used to treat Arthritis (foot or ankle), Ligament Injuries (acute or chronic), Tendon Injuries (acute or chronic), Joint Pain, Chronic Inflammatory Conditions, Achilles Tendinitis, Plantar Fasciitis, Chronic Nerve Irritation (Neuritis), Shin Splints and Heel Spurs. How does the PRP process work? Our doctors will recover a small amount of blood from your arm using a small needle and a specially designed syringe. The blood then goes through a rapid spinning process that separates and concentrates the platelets and other beneficial growth factors from the blood. The entire PRP production process is usually done in less than 20 minutes. What happens after that? The injected area will be anesthetized with a local anesthetic (Lidocaine). The blood with its PRP will be injected into the area directly or with the

aid of ultrasound or x-ray.

Am I a candidate for treatment with PRP? Speak with our doctors and ask if

PRP is right for you. We will perform an examination to determine if the use of PRP will benefit you. If you are on anti-inflammatory medications or blood thinners, your physician may temporarily discontinue the use of these until your treatment has taken place.

What are the risks associated with this treatment? PRP uses your body’s own natural

properties to treat your injury. Side effects utilizing PRP systems are very uncommon.

■ CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Greetings From Your

Pet of the Month

Chamber President! By Patty Archer

O

ur Veteran Business Owners Committee is making a clarion call to all military veteran business owners in our vibrant community. This dynamic committee serves as a platform for networking, mentorship, and resources, specifically tailored to the unique needs and experiences of veteran entrepreneurs. As a business owner who has served in the military, joining the Veterans Committee provides an avenue to connect with like-minded individuals, share your experiences, and contribute to a supportive community. Your knowledge, resilience, and leadership skills are invaluable, and we invite you to bring your wealth of experience to the table. However, the invitation is not just limited to veterans. The committee cordially invites any other businesses interested in supporting our veteran business owners. Your support could be the lifeline that a budding entrepreneur needs to scale their business or the motivation a struggling business owner requires to keep pushing. To express your interest, please visit miramarpembrokepines.org/veterans or contact the Chamber directly. We believe that together, we can create a robust ecosystem where veteran-owned businesses thrive and contribute significantly to the economic growth of our community. The Veterans Committee is more than just a committee; it's a family. Whether you're a veteran business owner or a supporter, your involvement can make a significant difference. Let's unite, support, and grow together for the betterment of our community and its economy. Happy Veterans Day to all who have served!

“Macy” This is Macy. She is a 12 year old Havaneese, but looks like a puppy. Her favorite trick is ‘giving her paw’. She loves going on car rides with her head out the window and enjoys long road trips with her family. When home, you’ll find her napping on beds, couch or any cozy spot she comes across.
