Happy Holidays!

T

he holiday season is upon us. With our incredible cultural and religious diversity, the winter holidays can have very different meanings for each of our readers. However, one constant is celebrating with friends and loved ones. Our family celebrates on Christmas Eve Eve (two days before Christmas) with an extended family dinner, followed by a “Yankee Swap” gift exchange. In a Yankee Swap, each participant brings a wrapped gift. The gifts are opened in sequence, where each player gets to unwrap a new gift or “steal” one that someone has already unwrapped. It is always great fun! Our kids often beg us to celebrate the fictional holiday Festivous, made famous on the sitcom Seinfeld. Our seventeen-year-old son is particularly interested in Festivous’ “airing of the grievances!” So far, we have successfully resisted! The Jaillet family and everyone at Our City Media wish you and your family a wonderful holiday season. We hope you take time to enjoy loved ones regardless of whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or even Festivous! Have a wonderful and safe Holiday Season.

World of Knowledge Learning Center is celebrating 20 years of serving young children in the communities of Pembroke Pines, Miramar, and surrounding cities. Since its inception, the school has taken a different approach: to help young children learn and appreciate the world that surrounds them while learning their ABCs. “For the past two decades, we have been blessed with the opportunity of seeing young children build a strong academic foundation through music and play. One of the main goals of the school is to embrace diversity and help young children learn about the different cultures that make up our world. Our lessons truly bring the world to your child’s learning experience in an exciting way.” says Elizabeth Gonzalez, Owner/Director of the school. A World of Knowledge was a pioneer in introducing VPK to the community and one of the largest providers in Broward since the program’s inception in 2005. Students that graduate from the program each year enter Kindergarten with high reading and math levels. Our students are prepared academically, socially and emotionally as they begin their elementary journey.

More than 3,500 students have been introduced to the concepts of letters, sounds, and higher-order critical thinking skills in a fun, interactive, and engaging way. The school is recognized by many

Ms. Elizabeth & Ms. Jenna

parents and educators as the #1 Choice for QUALITY in Early Learning and has been named BEST PRESCHOOL in Pembroke Pines three years in a row. Our teachers are certified and experienced teachers who have a passion for teaching young children and helping them achieve their highest potential. “The best compliment I can receive comes from our parents when they share success stories of their children in high school and attribute those successes to the foundation they received at A World of Knowledge,” said Ms. Gonzalez. A World of Knowledge offers an accelerated learning program that allows children to explore everyday concepts at their pace in a fun way allowing them to reach their higher potential. “We don't teach our students in the traditional way; we teach through interactive activities and with love, compassion, and care,” said Gonzalez, “I am blessed to have incredible teachers and administrators working with me who believe in our programs and have stepped up, to go above and beyond my already high expectations.”

16 / Our City Pembroke Pines / December 2023 / OurCityMedia.com

“My goal each day is to welcome students to the center and make sure they are in a loving and nurturing environment while they are learning and growing.” says Ms. Jenna Rauch, the Director of the school for over 11 years. “We take pride in providing a safe place where our parents know their child is cared for while they are learning.” Gonzalez proudly adds: “Our success with the children is based on our teaching styles, low child-to-teacher ratio, staff dedication, and the unique multicultural themes and concepts which were created specifically for our school. Multicultural Awareness, Character education, values, and etiquette are also essential components of our curriculum.”

A World of Knowledge Preschool is located at 750 NW 180th Terrace in Pembroke Pines. To learn more or request a tour, call 954-430-7707 or visit www.worldofknowledgekids.com

G

et ready to channel your inner superhero, lace up those running shoes, and hit the pavement! The 20th Annual KID Hero 5K is scheduled for January 27th at Vista View Park in Davie. This family-friendly run/walk event goes beyond your typical road race, as it aims to raise vital funds for Kids In Distress (KID). Participants are encouraged to embrace their superhero alter egos by donning costumes, whether individually or as part of a team. The day's festivities will also feature a "Smallville" Kids Fun Run and Fun Zone, a Gotham-themed area, a Power-Up Breakfast, and a lineup of family-friendly entertainment. KID operates a five-acre multi-program campus in Fort Lauderdale and a four-acre campus in Southwest Ranches, including two family foster group homes. KID offers a wide range of services, including individual, family, and group therapy

and counseling, preschool and aftercare programs, summer camp initiatives, the recruitment, training, and support of foster/ adoptive homes, and services focused on prevention, reunification, family preservation, as well as maternal and child health.

The race starts at 7:30 am sharp! There are also virtual race options for everyone to participate, even if you can’t make it. To sign up or learn more, follow the QR code or visit www.kidhero5k.org.

FESTIVE FLAIR

EIGHT HOLIDAY DECORATING TIPS FOR SOUTH FLORIDA

s the holiday season approaches, it's time to bring some festive cheer to our homes in sunny South Florida. While we may not have the traditional winter wonderland with snow-covered landscapes, we have our own unique way of celebrating the holidays under the sun. Here are some holiday decorating tips tailored to our tropical paradise.

1. Embrace the Beachy Vibes: South Florida is famous for its stunning beaches, so why not incorporate beach-themed decor into your holiday setup? Think seashell ornaments, starfish accents, and even a mini beach-themed Christmas tree with light blue and sandy beige hues. 2. Outdoor Decor: With our mild winter climate, take advantage of decorating your outdoor spaces. Hang string lights, place potted plants with red and green flowers, and consider a palm tree adorned with lights and ornaments as a delightful twist on a Christmas tree. 3. Tropical Centerpieces: Instead of traditional holiday centerpieces, opt for arrangements featuring tropical flowers like hibiscus, orchids, and bird-of-paradise. Place them in festive vases or containers with beachy accents. 4. Seashell Wreaths: Create a unique wreath by crafting one from seashells collected during your beach trips. Add some faux greenery and a ribbon for a holiday touch. 5. Coastal Stockings: Upgrade your stockings to beachy versions with seashell,

26 / Our City Pembroke Pines / December 2023 / OurCityMedia.com

starfish, or flip-flop motifs. Hang them on the mantel or a designated stocking holder. 6. Twinkling Lights: South Florida nights are perfect for creating a magical atmosphere with twinkling lights. Hang them on trees, fences, and around outdoor seating areas for a warm and inviting glow. 7. Outdoor Dining Al Fresco: Take advantage of the mild weather by setting up your holiday dinner or brunch outdoors. Decorate your outdoor dining area with tropical tableware, festive napkins, and candlelight. 8. Fresh Greenery: While pine trees may not grow naturally in South Florida, you can still find fresh greenery like eucalyptus and palm fronds to use in your holiday arrangements. In South Florida, holiday decorating is all about embracing our unique environment and infusing it with seasonal spirit. So, whether you're enjoying a beachside holiday or celebrating at home, these tips will help you create a festive atmosphere that's as warm and inviting as the South Florida sun. Happy decorating, and may your holidays be filled with joy and sunshine!

■ ASK THE EXPERT

The Elusive Stress Fracture in the Runner By Dr. Michael M. Cohen, DPM, FACFAS

N

othing is more frustrating to a runner than an injury which occurs just when the training schedule calls for ramping up mileage or intensity in time for competition. During my 35 years as a foot and ankle specialist treating runners in our community, I have personally witnessed not just the physical, but the emotional toll these injuries can inflict, and can truly empathize with them as I myself have fallen victim to these same unfortunate circumstances, and on multiple occasions. As runners we forget that our sport is not a passive but violent one, as each foot strike results in an impact equivalent to 3 or 4 times our body weight. To put it bluntly, training is a form of self-inflicted injury with the hopes that the ongoing cycle of injury and healing will ultimately lead to stronger muscles, tendons and bones after recovery. This is a positive and most desirable outcome which we refer to as “conditioning”. Unfortunately training exuberance tips the balance in favor of injury, sometimes with the best intentions of the coach, family or athlete and leads to the body’s inability to perform. This is when breakdown (injury) occurs resulting in a concept I call “reverse conditioning” secondary to overtraining. One such common overuse running injury is referred to as a stress reaction which in later stages develops into a stress fracture. Most athletes with a stress reaction present with an insidious onset of pain in a focal area sometimes confused with muscle soreness or tendinitis. Stress reactions and stress fractures represent fatigue failure injuries and are secondary to overuse. A stress reaction precedes a stress fracture in the bone fatigue continuum and is hallmarked by microscopic failure without an actual visible break in the bone. X-rays are typically negative in this stage of injury and better imaged with bone scans or MRI. The MRI is a very sensitive imaging technique which depicts swelling in bone at this early stage. As the fracture continues to develop, heat, swelling and pain are noticed during everyday activities. In severe cases the pain eventually precludes comfortable weight bearing and physical exercise causing the athlete to limp. Stress on bone creates constant remodeling affecting a balance between the cells which eliminate injured bone (like tiny vacuum cleaners) and cells which replace injured bone with newer healthier bone. Overtraining, either by adding mileage, speed or inclines will tilt the balance in favor of the cells evacuating injured bone. This ultimately results in a negative balance of healthy bone cells progressing to stress injury. Adding insult to injury, weak muscles in the

thigh and leg supporting the bone structure by absorbing shock may further stress the physiologic capacity of bone to maintain its integrity causing it to fatigue. This is not unlike bending a paper clip back and forth until heat develops causing the metal wire to fatigue until it snaps into two segments. Stress fractures are very similar as the continued stress of training results in fatigue failure of bone, leading to microscopic cracks and subsequent true fracture if allowed to continue. It is during these late stages of the process that X-rays become a more reliable tool.

includes but is not limited to the influences of terrain, running form and improper running shoes. To be effective, an individualized developmental plan for an effective return to play schedule should take these factors into consideration. The strategy, particularly when dealing with low risk fractures, may require decreasing training volume and intensity, using proper equipment, changing running technique, and cross training. Using this tactic assures that the athlete does not suffer a substantial loss of conditioning while recovering from injury. Sports medicine physicians realize all too well that extended time off training may adversely affect the recovery. Not All Stress Fractures Are The Same Recouping the body’s strength, flexibility and Stress fractures are generally classified into ability to balance is significantly hindered with two types: low risk fractures- those that heal overprotective measures and results in an well and usually without long term sequelae extended loss of training time. ■ CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Seasons Greetings From Your

Pet of the Month

Chamber President! By Patty Archer

A

s we welcome the full swing of the holiday season, it's an opportune time to reflect on the remarkable resilience that defines our community. In the face of economic tides, our local businesses and residents have demonstrated an inspiring ability to adapt and overcome. Despite economic uncertainties, we've witnessed the unwavering determination of our business owners, and the Chamber takes pride in acknowledging their tenacity. Through creativity and innovation, businesses have navigated economic shifts, ensuring that the heartbeat of our area remains strong. As we approach the year's end, let's take a moment to celebrate their enduring entrepreneurial spirit. From charming boutiques to our bustling commercial areas, each establishment contributes to the vibrant tapestry of our community. This holiday season, let's make a collective commitment to support local businesses. By choosing to shop locally, we invest in the prosperity of our community, fostering economic growth and sustainability. Looking to 2024, let us carry the lessons of resilience into the new year. Together, we can continue building a community that thrives despite any challenge. And as we gather with loved ones, let this holiday season be a reminder of the strength that lies within our community—a strength that ensures a prosperous future for us all. Now and in the future, the Chamber is dedicated to being a Convener of Leaders, a Catalyst for positive change, and a Champion for a strong business community. “Licorice”

Hello, my name is Licorice AKA Bunbun and I am a sweet and loving little bunny! I was rescued from the Walmart parking lot and was supposed to go to a bunny rescue but my humans ended up falling in love and now I’m a happy, free-roaming gal. I am fully litter box trained and come running if you call my name (mainly because I know I’m going to get a treat)! I get along great with my feline siblings and we all love to sleep on mom’s bed at night!

Yours in Service,

Chamber President
