Resolutions For The New Year

T

he tradition of making New Year’s resolutions dates back thousands of years and has its origins in various cultures and civilizations. While the specific customs and resolutions may have evolved over time, the concept of setting goals and making commitments for self-improvement at the start of a new year has remained a common practice in many parts of the world. The practice of making New Year’s resolutions can be traced back to ancient Babylon, around 4,000 years ago. The Babylonians celebrated the New Year during the spring equinox and made promises to their gods to repay debts and return borrowed items. This was seen as a way to secure favor for the upcoming year. In the early days of the United States, religious and moral resolutions continued to be popular. The practice later evolved to include promises related to self-improvement, such as losing weight or saving money. Today, New Year’s resolutions encompass a wide range of goals and commitments, from personal fitness and health to career aspirations and self-improvement. Whether your resolution for this year is related to fitness, financial success, or learning a new hobby, we wish you the very best in pursuing yours!

Seniors Helping Seniors®

Celebrates 10 Years!

Empowering Seniors to Age Independently

A

s we journey through life, aging gracefully is a goal we all share. However, for many seniors, even the simplest of tasks can become a challenge. While they may require assistance with daily activities, the thought of relocating to live with their children or entering an assisted living facility may not be appealing. Fortunately, Seniors Helping Seniors® has been a beacon of support for these individuals for the past 25 years. We sat down with Diana Marrero Cabassi, the Franchise Owner of Seniors Helping Seniors, to learn more about this unique service and how it can benefit seniors and their families.

care, and compassion. Their backgrounds are as diverse as the seniors they assist. We seek individuals with a volunteer spirit who don't mind being compensated for their services.

Tell us about Seniors Helping Seniors.

Our caregivers can assist with a wide range of tasks, from meal preparation to providing transportation to medical appointments. We handle light housekeeping, laundry, grocery shopping, errands, and even pet care. We also offer services such as safety and fall prevention, medication reminders, memory loss support, relief for family members, overnight supervision, and 24-hour care. In essence, we provide as much or as little support as our clients require.

Seniors Helping Seniors® is a licensed agency dedicated to providing homemaker and companionship services to seniors who need a helping hand to maintain their independence at home.

What sets your business apart from other caregiver agencies?

What truly differentiates us is the quality of our caregivers. We take pride in being the only agency that predominantly employs active seniors as caregivers. Our approach is founded on the belief that the best person to care for a senior is someone who can genuinely understand and relate to their needs.

How do you match caregivers with seniors in need of assistance?

We make matches based on shared interests and values. Our caregivers are compassionate individuals with a genuine desire to help others. We like to say, it’s… Like getting a little help from your friends®.

Who typically seeks your services as clients?

Our typical clients are seniors who require assistance with daily tasks around the house or simply seek companionship. As people are living longer, but not necessarily healthier lives, loneliness can affect many seniors. Our service provides not only practical support but also valuable friendship to those who may be feeling isolated or depressed.

Tell us about your caregivers.

While our caregivers each have their unique qualities, they all share a common thread of love,

How do you ensure the safety and security of your clients?

Personally, I interview all potential caregivers and thoroughly check their references. Additionally, we require everyone to undergo a Level 2 FBI background screening at the national level.

What services does Seniors Helping Seniors provide?

How did Seniors Helping Seniors Start?

Seniors Helping Seniors® was founded over 25 years ago by Kiran and Philip Yocom. It was initially a non-profit organization that provided relief to members of their community in Pennsylvania. Prior to starting the company, Kiran had worked in India with Mother Teresa. I joined Seniors Helping Seniors® 10 years ago after moving to Florida to help care for my mother when she was diagnosed with dementia. After learning how they placed such a high priority on helping seniors maintain their independence and dignity, I decided to open a local office and I’m very fortunate that we have been providing service in the area since 2014!

Anything else you would like to add?

Our rates are competitive, and we can tailor a plan of care to fit within any budget. I encourage you to call and schedule a free inhome consultation.

Could you tell us more about the personalized service you provide?

In our Seniors Helping Seniors® community, this isn't just a job, and you're not just a client. We are genuinely interested in who you are, what you need, and what you can share with us. Our primary goal is to deliver loving and compassionate care. Most importantly, we aim to ensure that seniors, often overlooked and disrespected, are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.

Special Stormwater Update Q&A

W

e’ve had a lot of questions pop up after our recent rain events so I thought I’d do what I can to get it straight.

My area is flooded. Who to contact?

We have a stormwater manager, Bill Mulder. His email is BMulder@Plantation. org. Email is great because he can then forward to other staff. Include an address and phone number, please. One photo is usually enough. And I know you’re frustrated, but whether it’s a compelling narrative or a quick note, our service level will be the same.

Stormwater manager? What’s up with that?

In the past year, we have ramped up preparation and reaction to rain events. Bill works under City Engineer Samira Shalan, who has a passion for stormwater management like I’ve never seen. So Bill has been evaluating troublesome areas and getting to work. For example, he and his four-person crew did a massive cleanout of the Park East area (Northwest 46th Avenue) and we showed the difference during a homeowners’ meeting there. The problems should be reduced.

What’s our worst area?

Country Club Estates, south of Broward all the way to Peters, needs the most help. The homes are mostly older and the community was built with no stormwater drainage. (It’s also lacking sewage.) During the April 12 rain event, water stayed and stayed and we actually drove trucks into the area, used vacuums to collect standing water, and then transported the water out of there. City Engineer Shalan has worked on two fixes that will provide at least some relief. She spoke with DOT and the Turnpike people and we will connect pipes in the neighborhood to transport water east and west into nearby canals, using the DOT’s existing structures.

What about Plantation Acres? The city is not responsible for water management in the Acres. They are

By Mayor Sortal

governed by the Plantation Acres Improvement District, and their residents pay taxes for pumps, employees and other items. It’s problematic in the Acres because the land is very much like at the bottom of a bowl. Gravity is not their friend. This year, our Chief Administrative Officer, Jason Nunemaker, reasoned that although we are not responsible, they are still our residents. So he sent a spare pump we had to help especially in the south portion of the area. I have worked to improve communication with PAID officials and we will help when we can. It is in everyone’s best interest if PAID succeeds.

What can I do?

Make sure the drains on your property are clear of leaves and other objects, so water will flow. Understand that there will be flooding and we want to make sure the roads are passable as soon as possible, but our major goal is defending property. And sometimes patience is in order: If there are big puddles outside, they will dissipate with time.

What about long term?

We allocated $1.277 million in ARPA funding for the development of a citywide stormwater master plan that’s underway. Nunemaker scours the city for sites for more retention ponds. We will likely evaluate some trees in swales that have grown too large and are blocking water flow.. We are studying which drains are ours, which belong to a HOA and which could be under the auspices of South Florida Water Management District or Old Plantation Water District. This SFWMD brochure explains how it works.

What else?

Well, while Mulder is called a stormwater manager, he’s basically overseeing all facets of our waterways. That means when there’s too much algae, he’s the one to contact. We recently changed waterway maintenance contractors because there were some spots that just weren’t being kept up enough.

MVP focuses on a wide range of

It is no surprise that men and women who were willing to join the armed forces were also willing to selflessly participate in the program. MVP is co-directed by two prominent physicians: John Concato, M.D., M.S., M.P.H., a professor of medicine at Yale University, and J. Michael Gaziano, M.D., M.P.H., a professor of medicine at Harvard University. Some of the research breakthroughs directly attributable to MVP include: Height and Health Risks An MVP study involving 280,000 veterans revealed 127 medical conditions with risk factors linked to height. Tall individuals appear to have a reduced risk of cardiovascular problems but an increased risk for conditions like peripheral neuropathy and circulatory disorders. Yogurt and Heart Health Research on nearly 200,000 veterans in 2021 indicated that higher yogurt consumption correlates with increased levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or "good cholesterol," potentially reducing heart disease risk and increasing longevity. Racial Disparities in COVID-19 Outcomes: MVP researchers discovered a link between two mutations of the APOL1 gene and increased risk of acute kidney failure in Black patients with COVID-19. This finding, based on data from over 150,000 Black veterans, is leading to new drug research targeting the APOL1 gene. Genetic Links Between PTSD, TBI, and Dementia A study found a genetic connection between PTSD, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and an increased risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease. This research highlights the importance of genetic factors in these conditions and may improve screening and treatment.

■ LEGALLY SPEAKING

CAN I USE A COMPUTER OR AI

TO WRITE MY WILL?

F

By Andrea L. Jakob, Esq.

or many, a New Year’s Resolution may be to finally create your “Estate Plan.” You might be curious about using artificial intelligence “AI” or platforms such as Legal Zoom, Rocket Lawyer, or similar online services to write the plan for you. While these tools are accessible and cost-effective (in the short term), it's important to recognize more is required. Believe it or not, to ensure these documents are legally valid and aligned with your intentions, you need a human! This human should have a strong grasp of all estate plan concepts, potential pitfalls, and your state’s law.

Ask yourself:

• How well do I understand options to protect my money, property, family, or business if I have a medical emergency, a short- or long-term incapacity, or after death? • What is my financial situation regarding property, income, or debt? • Is my family structure complicated? • Am I undecided about my wishes (how to divide my money and property, when to distribute it, or what to include in an advanced directive)? • Will my family get along if my will is unclear? • Will someone inherit before they understand the value of their inheritance? • What if your adult child is on the brink of divorce, will the soon-to-be ex-spouse receive anything from an inheritance?

Life is constantly changing–

Errors That Make Online Documents Unenforceable

The following are common mistakes in online documents that may require a court to interpret them or lead to fighting among your loved ones: • Ambiguity in wording. Imagine a will states: “I leave my property to my children" without specifying which children by name. This could lead to a family feud if you have three kids and the AI-written will doesn’t clarify which children will inherit. • Improper use of legal terms. Let's say an AI-generated will uses the term "heirs" instead of "beneficiaries." This misuse of legal terminology might lead to unintended consequences. For example, distant relatives or even creditors could potentially claim a share of the estate as "heirs.". • Inconsistent terminology. Using different terms to refer to the same asset (e.g., house, residence, homestead, property) may create confusion about what is being inherited. • Improper witnessing and notarization. Imagine the chaos if your estate ends up in court because the will wasn't correctly witnessed and notarized. • Lack of clarity in distribution. Vague instructions regarding who will receive your accounts and property or how they will receive them, such as "divide my estate fairly among my children," may cause disputes if there is no clear definition of terms like fairly. • Failure to address contingencies. Not accounting for contingencies, such as what to do if a beneficiary predeceases you is a problem we see quite often. If the Online Will doesn’t specify an alternate beneficiary, asset distribution would be subject to state law. • Inadequate powers of attorney. Failing to designate agents for financial or medical decision-making authority, creates complications during incapacity and may require your loved ones to get a court involved.

earn more about our city: I’m delighted to announce the launch of University of Plantation, a citizens’ academy designed to educate residents. Many municipalities have such initiatives and we gathered the best practices to create ours. There will be five one-hour sessions, once per month on Thursdays from January through May, at the Police Outreach Center at Broward Mall. Our staff will cover procurement, permitting, budgeting, tree placement and removal and the role of a strong mayor. Registration is limited to 18. Apply at Plantation.org/UP.

Crack’d Kitchen Opens: Crack’d Kitchen & Coffee, a medium-priced

breakfast/lunch spot, opened at Plantation Walk. Menu items include breakfast sandwiches (mostly $7.95), bowls ($12.95), chicken tenders, sandwiches (often $12.95), greens ($9.95), smoothies ($8.95) and shakes ($6.95). Farm-fresh, cage-free eggs are used in their dishes. I could easily see residents in the nearby apartments placing an online order and going on their way. The restaurant had a soft open on Saturday and was rolling Monday morning with a crowd. This is the fifth Crack’d Kitchen to open, but the first in Florida. Go to CrackdKitchen.com or call 954-755-5445.

40 Years for Chief Harrison: The city honored Police Chief Howard

Harrison, who marked 40 years with the Plantation Police Department. But it wasn’t easy. Harrison prefers to defer the attention to others in the department. Still, he received balloons during the Council meeting and a cake during a police staff meeting. Harrison grew up in Plantation and is a proud South Plantation High alum. So I arranged for Principal Christine Henschel to show up at the council meeting. She thanked him for always supporting the school. Before serving 14 years as Police Chief, Harrison gained experience as a detective, SWAT sergeant, traffic homicide investigator and deputy chief.

Bikes for Children: Ryan Case appeared at the Dec. 6 City Council meeting to accept the annual proclamation for Rick Case Bikes for Kids Day. The auto company long ago started the tradition of collecting bicycles, cleaning them up and providing them to children in need. To donate a bike, go to any Rick Case dealership. CERT Proclamation: We were delighted to recognize a group of

volunteers who have trained to help our city in times of crisis. Our CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) consists of 20 people who are available to assist our fire department and other first responders with first aid, disaster response and other duties. Several municipalities have CERT operations and Plantation began forming its version in 2021, during COVID. Participants completed 24 hours of basic training plus CPR, Stop the Bleed, HAZMAT awareness, crowd management and infectious disease awareness. Learn more at Plantation.org/CERT.

Plantation Woman’s Club Presents Checks: At the City Council meeting on Nov. 8, the GFWC Plantation Woman's Club presented checks for initiatives that make our events and our first responder lives better. Four checks went to Parks and Recreation, sponsoring Trunk or Treat, Rock the Park, Light Up City Hall and the Holiday Parade. The Police Department received funding to provide furnishings for the decompression room that will be a space for police officers, dispatch personnel and community service aides to mentally recover after the stressful calls they respond to. Fire Rescue will be able to purchase a thermal imaging drone to assist firefighters. We’re grateful to GFWC Plantation Woman's Club volunteers for their long-term support of the City.
