Pink October: Honoring Resilience & Care

October heralds the arrival of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Every year, the world witnesses unexpected bursts of pink, from high school footballers donning pink socks in tribute to their mother’s battles to colleagues sporting pink ribbons on their attire. The global movement for Breast Cancer Awareness has not only illuminated the challenges of breast cancer but also fueled immense strides in research funding.

The Our City Media family is no stranger to the shadows of breast cancer. Some of us have watched loved ones grapple with a diagnosis and eventually overcome it, while others have faced the pain of loss. Throughout these experiences, one constant remained: the relentless dedication of healthcare professionals. Their unwavering commitment to ensuring optimum health is truly commendable.

As highlighted by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, nearly 1 million Floridians have chosen the noble path of healthcare. This includes 83,000 doctors, 190,000 nurses, 66,000 EMTs, and Paramedics, alongside hundreds of thousands in support roles.

Over the past three years, these “front line” heroes have faced unparalleled demands, responding with grace and strength. “It’s important to remember that breast cancer is not just one disease,” says Dr. Mahtani. “There are several subtypes, and they aren’t all treated the same way.

Plantation’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest is back!

Middle and high school students who attend a Plantation school or live in Plantation are invited to participate in this annual contest where the winners receive a $100 Visa Gift Card!

Submissions will be accepted between Monday, October 16th through Friday, November 17th. Contest winners will be awarded at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration event on January 13, 2024.

This year’s essay topic is:

“A man dies when he refuses to stand up for that which is right. A man dies when he refuses to stand up for justice. A man dies when he refuses to take a stand for that which is true.”

Student essays should explain what the quote means to them and what they feel it meant to Dr. King.

Contest Rules:

• Must be a middle or high school student enrolled in a City of Plantation school or residing within City limits.

• One essay per student.

• Essays must be original, typed, double-spaced, 250-500 words, and submitted as a Microsoft Word document or PDF.

Barb Simmons, CEO of HCA Florida Westside Hospital, is Leading the Parade!

Instead of serving water from the sidelines, this year Barb Simmons is leading the parade.

Simmons, CEO of HCA Florida Westside Hospital, will be the grand marshal at Plantation’s annual “It’s A Wonderful Life in Plantation Holiday Parade” at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 18.

For the past 27 years, for two parades a year, Simmons has coordinated the two First Aid Stations along the parade route that keeps parade participants hydrated and band-aids on boo-boos.

“Barb Simmons should be at the front of the parade,” said Mayor Nick Sortal, noting her extensive resume of non-work-related service to the city. “I’m glad we can place her there.”

Simmons has served on the executive board of the Greater Plantation Chamber of Commerce for eight years. In 2000, Barbara received the SFONE Nursing Excellence award and the Healthy Mother’s/Healthy Babies Coalition of

Broward County named her an “Outstanding Mother of the Year” in 2006.

“I am very fortunate to count Barb as one of my dearest friends and more like a sister for the past 28 years,” said Siobhan Edwards, president of the Greater Plantation Chamber of Commerce. “I have always known her to be someone you can count on.”

She also serves on the city’s Midtown Advisory Board, which offers expertise on how to best develop our Midtown (defined as the area between University Drive and Pine Island Road).

Simmons has been with HCA since 1975, starting as a New Graduate Nurse at Plantation General Hospital (PGH) where she continued her career as a nurse educator in the orthopedic unit, followed by several years as a critical care RN then Supervisor of various units.

At one time she was needed to run two hospitals simultaneously (Mercy Hospital in Miami and Plantation General Hospital in Plantation). The receipt of her CCRN in 1992 and the development of the perinatal high-risk maternity unit, in 1988, are two of Simmons’ most memorable nursing achievements while

at Plantation General. In 1991 she became the assistant director of nursing and was promoted to COO in 1996.

In 2006, Simmons was appointed CEO of Plantation General Hospital and in 2011 and also served as CEO for Mercy Hospital, a campus of PGH, until October of 2014, when she became the CEO of Westside Regional Medical Center.

During her eight years at Westside, Simmons has improved employee and physician engagement scores, continued improvement in the clinical excellence scorecard, opened the OSED on the campus of Nova Southeastern University as well as the three-story, 72-bed addition to the main campus.

With the successful applications for internal medicine and general surgery residency programs in July 2020 and addition of anesthesia and pathology in 2021, as well as OB/GYN, ER, Neurology, and transitional year in 2022, Westside is positioned for future growth and expansion.

Simmons lives in Plantation and is the proud mother of two sons, who both work in the healthcare industry. She’s also proud of her five grandchildren.

Music, Event Plans Coming Together at Plantation Walk

Plantation Walk officials met with Mayor Nick Sortal and staff recently to solidify early details on entertainment at the live-work-play venue.

Acoustic musical acts will take the stage in the center Plaza area on select days starting sometime in October, said Ray Stines, Vice President of The Entertainment Group. Planned, family-friendly activities will be curated for Plantation residents and visitors alike.

“I am impressed by their attention to detail and understanding,” Mayor Sortal said. “I think residents will find plenty of options in line with what they are looking for.”

Car shows, craft markets, street performers, and other activities are on the list. Some will require closing the thoroughfare that runs from Tacocraft to Frank Pepe Pizzeria, said Stines, who 30 years ago was a tour manager for major musical recording artists and also spent 17 years with Universal Orlando Resort as the Senior Director of Entertainment Production & Administration.

Say you co-own a haunted mansion with a friend, complete with survivorship rights. When you journey to the other side, your co-owner inherits the eerie abode, bypassing your will. Basically, if you wanted your will to control the fate of the mansion, you should've held the title differently.

BURTONS ON THE WAY

Plans are moving forward for a nice restaurant in the spot that Carrabba’s occupied until a July 6, 2019, explosion.

Burtons Grill & Bar, a dining establishment in line with other sit-down restaurants in the city, has received a building permit and hopes to open in January 2024 at Market on University. There are 19 Burtons Grill locations along the East Coast, including one in Boca Raton. Officials say their Crab Crusted Haddock, Maxx Burger, steaks, and entrée salads are among their most popular fare. They are also known for being food allergy-friendly and their gluten-free menu. Total capacity is about 250, including outdoor dining, which is similarly sized to restaurants such as J. Alexander’s and Kaluz.

Waterway Treatment: Heavy algae bloom associated with extreme heat has been a hot topic of discussion not only in Plantation, but throughout South Florida in the past couple of weeks. We inspected the city's waterways and met with our contractor to provide an action plan to resolve this issue as soon as possible. But this is going to take awhile.

Mailbox Theft Warning: TV stations shared the news of a mail theft bust in Jacaranda Lakes. Officers responded to a call of a suspicious vehicle driving from mailbox to mailbox at 3:30 a.m. Upon being stopped, the officers found more than 200 pieces of stolen mail. I have four thoughts. First, visit your mailbox before bedtime, at least. Second, consider buying a locking mailbox. Third, deposit outgoing mail as close to the pickup time as possible or bring mail that contains checks inside the post office. Fourth, enter 954-797-2100 in your cell phone and mark it PLANTATION POLICE. Call them if you see anything suspicious (for emergencies, dial 911). They want your call.

Horland to Chair: Congratulations to Councilmember Denise Horland on her appointment as Chair of the 2023-2024 Florida League of Cities (FLC) Utilities, Natural Resources & Public Works Committee. We appreciate Councilmember Horland representing the City’s interests in this statewide organization. This committee focuses on issues such as energy, environmental and wetlands permitting, hazardous and toxic waste, recycling, solid waste and stormwater.

Miss Florida: Juliette Valle, 22, was honored for being crowned Miss Florida in June. The graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas High and University of Miami now goes on to compete for Miss America. Recognized as one of 14 South Florida Hispanic Women of Distinction, Juliette donated 100 percent of proceeds from her album “Joyfully, Juliette Valle,” to the National Kidney Foundation of Florida and Donate Life America. Plantation High's Aerospace Engineers Soar to New Heights

The Aerospace Engineering Program at Plantation High School has witnessed remarkable growth, evolving from a small club of fifteen students in its inaugural year to a thriving community with over 150 students currently enrolled in Aerospace Engineering courses. Notably, many of our former students have pursued higher education in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) fields, and some have secured coveted positions through paid internships at esteemed organizations like NASA and Lockheed-Martin. Additionally, several graduates have embarked on successful careers with industry giants such as SpaceX and NASA.

The program offers a comprehensive curriculum that encompasses advanced mathematics and science courses alongside hands-on experiences in engineering and aerospace activities. Students delve into a wide range of subjects, including flight dynamics, aerospace design principles,

computer simulation, CAD, 3D modeling, electronic design, communication technologies, and programming. This interdisciplinary approach equips students with the skills and knowledge needed to explore how technological advancements and space exploration can positively impact our lives and the environment.

Many of our students actively engage in the Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC), a national model rocket competition for U.S. high school and middle school students. Over the past six years, Plantation High School has achieved an impressive record with six top-ten finishes, earning students the chance to share in a grand prize pool exceeding $60,000 in cash and savings bonds.

Moreover, students participate in NASA's Student Launch (SL), a prestigious national competition sponsored by NASA. In this competition, students are entrusted with designing, building, and launching rockets to altitudes of up to one mile. Collaborating

with Bair Middle School as part of our LEEO outreach projects, students also collaboratively design payloads. They take ownership of proposal writing, monthly progress reports, and engaging in video conferences with NASA officials for presentations and feedback. The culmination of this effort is a trip to Huntsville, Alabama, where our students compete with schools from across the nation, further demonstrating their dedication and commitment to the field of aerospace engineering.
