Remember, True Heroes Walk Among Us!

O

n the morning of October 8th, the Islamist group Hamas carried out one of the worst terrorist attacks in recent history. The atrocities that took place are now well known and led to an unprecedented response from the Israeli military. Finding a silver lining to such a horrible course of events is almost impossible. Like many in America, we closely followed the early days of the war and discovered the story of one selfless grandfather’s efforts to rescue his son, daughter-in-law, and two granddaughters. Retired Israeli General Noam Tibon received a terrible phone call from his son, journalist Amir Tibon. Amir needed help. Hamas fighters had overrun his community, searching for people to take hostage or worse. Amir and his family live in Kibbutz Nahal Oz on the border of Gaza. “In every house in our community and other communities along the border with Gaza, there is a room that is built of very strong concrete that can withstand a direct hit from a mortar or a rocket,” said Amir in an interview with The Atlantic, “I’m in the room with my wife, and I hear the gunfire directly outside my window, as well as shouting.” They hid in the dark as the noise of war surrounded them. “Trust me, I will come,” Noam reassured his son, “Nobody, nobody, can stop me.” Noam then set out on perhaps the most crucial mission of his life: to save his family. He and his wife raced from Tel Aviv to Nahal Oz but had to stop to help survivors of the Nova music festival massacre. After delivering as many people as possible to a safe location away from the border, Tibon again drove toward the kibbutz where his family was hiding. Along the way, they encountered another group that needed help. Soldiers were under fire from Hamas fighters. Together with the soldiers, Noam ended the threat. Two of the soldiers, however, were wounded and needed care. Noam drove them back to where he had left his wife so the soldiers could be cared for. He then enlisted the help of another retired general, Israel Ziv. The two sixty-plus-year-old men set off again. They arrived at Nahal Oz about the same time as an Israeli paratrooper unit. They began the dangerous process of clearing the town of enemy fighters. Finally, ten hours after the ordeal started, Noam’s three-year-old granddaughter Galia heard her grandfather’s voice. “Saba higea,” she called out. “Grandfather is here.” Their family was saved. In our world’s darkest hours, remember: true heroes walk among us! (This story is based, in part, on an interview between Yair Rosenberg and Amir Tibon in The Atlantic.)

Happy Thanksgiving! We hope you gather with family and loved ones to celebrate each other and give thanks for all that we have. In the words of John F. Kennedy, “Over three centuries ago, our forefathers in Virginia and in Massachusetts, far from home in a lonely wilderness, set aside a time of thanksgiving. On the appointed day, they gave reverent thanks for their safety, for the health of their children, for the fertility of their fields, for the love which bound them together, and for the faith which united them with their God.”

THE PINK RUN AT PLANTATION CENTRAL PARK By E.F. Israel

M

ore than 700 enjoyed participating in the inaugural Pink October run at Plantation Central Park, supporting an endeavor that brings mammograms and cardiac evaluations to those who need it most. Runners and walkers were good sports about wearing the pink tutus on Oct. 15th that race directors provided for those covering the 5-kilometer distance. Andrea Ivory, founder and director of The Women’s Breast and Heart Initiative, said the event had the best support possible. She cited race organizer Split Second Timing, The City of Plantation Parks and Recreation Department and Mayor Nick Sortal, who gave an introductory surprise and helped hand out the awards. Ivory notes that early detection is the focus of the nonprofit and she makes sure mammograms – and then treatment for those diagnosed – are offered to those who either don’t have the time or the money to get checked. They also have the same

approach in diagnosing and treating heart disease. Ivory, a breast cancer survivor, created the Miami Lakes-based initiative in 2005. The initiative created a unique neighborhood outreach program by meeting the community through a door-to-door campaign that increased awareness. One of her endeavors is to introduce the first official Florida License plate designed to support disease prevention and early detection. There is a minimum number of 3,000 orders to make a Florida plate a reality, so she’s asking people to commit now. It’s $33. Go to flbreasthealth.com/ licenseplate. Mayor Sortal, a dedicated runner who competed in the race, surprised race participant Elizabeth Mendez, a breast cancer survivor, by awarding her race No. 1 at the starting line. Sortal said that while all cancer survivors face challenges, race director, Josh Stern, and he thought it would be nice to honor

at least somebody. He also thanked council member Jennifer Andreu for her participation.

Baptist Health Cancer Care

Baptist Health Cancer Care at Plantation offers personalized breast health services and cancer care for women. Medical oncologist Lauren Carcas, M.D., is proud to be part of Baptist Health Cancer Care at Plantation, where a team of medical and surgical experts offers the full spectrum of breast cancer care for Broward residents. Dr. Carcas focuses on treating breast cancer patients as well as those with an elevated risk of developing breast cancer based on their family history. She also treats cancers of the female reproductive system. “As a Broward resident myself, I understand the benefits of receiving cancer care close to home,” says Dr. Carcas. She is affiliated with several Broward-area hospitals and coordinates care with other local physicians, ensuring that patients can stay with their preferred surgeon while receiving treatment from Miami Cancer Institute, Florida’s only member of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Alliance.

Lauren Carcas, M.D.

“Our cancer hub in Plantation places us in the geographic middle of large, well-established hospital systems,” she says. “What sets us apart is our women’s health program, which offers extensive care from screening to treatment, all under one roof. This includes screening mammograms, diagnostic testing, biopsies, MRIs, staging studies, echocardiograms, consultations with oncologists, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and follow-up care.” 16 / Our City Plantation / November 2023 / OurCityMedia.com

Baptist Health Cancer Care at Plantation also offers a robust clinical trial platform, exposing qualifying patients to groundbreaking, potentially less-toxic medications that could improve their chances of survival and a life free of cancer. The multidisciplinary cancer care team in Plantation also includes breast medical oncologists Dr. Naomi Dempsey and Dr. Reshma Mahtani; radiation oncologist Dr. Ana Botero; breast surgical oncologist Dr. Nadia NoceraZachariah; and Dr. John Diaz, chief of gynecologic oncology at Baptist Health Cancer Care. “Our Plantation team believes in personalized care, and our focus on women's health and malignancies allows us to provide a comprehensive patient experience, as we are not competing with other disease sites for resources or space,” says Dr. Carcas. “We know our patients by name and tailor our treatment programs to align with their personal priorities, beliefs and support systems. “Unlike other providers in the area, we offer all aspects of cancer care in one place, including radiation therapy in our APEx-accredited facility. Patients who need proton therapy, gamma knife and other advanced radiation therapies receive expedited treatment at Miami Cancer Institute.” The Plantation cancer hub also offers on-site surgery, with pathology reviewed by specialists in women's malignancies.

“We believe in treating the whole person, not just the cancer,” says Dr. Carcas. “Our onsite physical therapy, rehabilitation and pain management services address the physical changes that can occur during and after cancer treatment. We offer diet and nutrition counseling as well as an alternative medicine clinic. We also emphasize the importance of mental health through on-site wellness and self-care programs as well as telehealth access to social workers and therapists.” The Baptist Health women’s cancer experts at Plantation take pride in creating a welcoming environment for patients. The care team warmly greets all patients and guides them through their entire cancer journey. “We approach each patient as a whole person with needs beyond just cancer treatment, and it is our goal to address all of these needs,” says Dr. Carcas. If you are a woman living in Broward County and have been diagnosed with breast cancer, we invite you to experience the personalized care offered by the Baptist Health Cancer Care team at Plantation. To get the compassionate cancer care you deserve, schedule your appointment at 954-837-1490 or visit BaptistHealth.net/Plantation.

CENTRAL PARK ELEMENTARY REWARDED FOR LOWERING THEIR ENERGY CONSUMPTION WITH A HEAT PEP RALLY By E.F. Israel

C

Third Grade Teacher Monika Moorman

entral Park Elementary students have been showing their enthusiasm for protecting the environment for some years now, but a pep rally at the Plantation school elevated their spirits even more. Miami Heat mascot Burnie created a frenzy in the school cafeteria one recent Friday morning, a special visit warranted by the students and staff paying attention to lowering their energy consumption. The school won the How Low Can You Go challenge, sponsored by the Heat. It’s their fifth straight victory. “Our kids did a great job,” said Lori Turner, principal at Central Park Elementary. “Our teachers worked really hard to promote the idea of conservation. We turned off computers, we turned off laptops. We also did our best to help keep our environment clean as well.” Third-grade teacher Monika Moorman, Broward County’s teacher of the year in 2021, leads environmental efforts at the school, including the P3 Challenge (Preserving our Planet for Prosperity). The How Low

Can You Go endeavor was supported by her environmental stewards. Plantation Mayor Nick Sor tal, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Peter Licata and School Board member Debbi Hixon each addressed the students before Burnie took the floor. “Doing what you all did should make the Heat especially proud because both basketball and helping the community are team efforts,” Sortal said. Teachers and administrators stood around the sides of the cafeteria, as students packed the tables. Everyone screamed when Burnie burst through the doors at a dead run. “LET’S GO HEAT!” they chanted. Burnie pulled students to the front of the cafeteria and led a dance-off. He then grabbed Sortal, Licata, Hixon and Principal Turner for a quick boogie before another full-out dash of high-fiving students. Their voices were fatigued by the end of the event as they headed off for the rest of their classes.

25 Years? In Plantation, You Get a Cake

By E.F. Israel ooking for a way to honor city employees, Plantation Mayor said. “But most of them draw extra satisfaction in being part of a team that serves the public.” Nick Sortal wanted something simple, yet fun. “I thought ‘Who doesn’t like cake?’” Sortal said. He reports a slight but meaningful change: “We have some departments that now call people from the public ‘customers’ And thus began a new tradition for city employees: As they mark their 25th year with Plantation, Sortal brings a cake to their instead of ‘residents.’ Their shift in point of view means a lot to me.” workplace, and the honoree’s co-workers join in a quick celebration. I wanted to have something special for them around their co-workers. Those are really the people they’ve spent most of their career with. And being here 25 years is a big deal to me.” Honorees order in advance from one of eight choices at Publix. He led the movement to make the 12 weeks for new parents under the Family Medical League Act paid almost immediately after taking office. He also instituted a policy allowing employees two hours per month for voluntary public service, and he encouraged the Human Resources Department to add more employee recognition and fun events, especially at the Public Works and Utilities departments, which are not places Sortal and city administration frequent as often. “Many of our employees could be making more money in the public sector, although we do have stellar health insurance,” he

Renaissance on the Water: The Transformation of Pier Sixty-Six

T

he steady state of development in Fort Lauderdale is no more evident than on the Intracoastal Waterway near the port. The Broward County Convention Center expansion project is well underway and will feature a new Omni Hotel, the Disney Cruise Terminal, and 1.2 million square feet of exhibition space. What is less understood is what is happening on the other side of the waterway at the iconic Pier 66 property. For more than 60 years, Pier Sixty-Six has been a monumental property in Fort Lauderdale. With its iconic spiretopped tower and its location at the junction of the 17th Street Causeway and Intracoastal Waterway, the property has welcomed celebrities, honeymooners and virtually all of the world’s greatest yachts. Pier Sixty-Six was originally a fuel dock and gas station that was opened in the 1950s by Phillips 66 Petroleum. The resort was later built in the 1960s by legendary developer Richard McLaughlin. He played a pivotal role in its transformation from a fuel dock to the iconic luxury hotel and marina complex that became synonymous with the upscale side of Fort Lauderdale in the mid-20th century. Under McLaughlin's vision and leadership, Pier 66 became a renowned destination and a testament to its time's innovative architectural and development practices. Over time the property became stagnant and in

disrepair, resulting, ultimately in the closing of the iconic hotel. Tavistock Purchase British Billionaire Joe Lewis’ Tavistock Development Company acquired Pier 66 Hotel & Marina, along with the neighboring Sails Marina, in late 2016. The acquisition marked a significant move by Tavistock into the South Florida real estate and hospitality scene. They announced plans to revitalize and enhance the iconic waterfront property while respecting its historic value to the Fort Lauderdale community. Tavistock has “reimagined” Pier Sixty-Six as Fort Lauderdale’s “social harbor.” A destination where those seeking relaxation and refuge, engaging events and alluring amenities, and an approachable marine and resort lifestyle all come together. The new-look property will retain the iconic Pier 66 tower, including the Top of the Marina Lounge with its rotating views of Fort Lauderdale along with the Atlantic Ocean. It will also offer luxury condominium homes. The resorts’ plans evoke images of Mediterranean-style luxury resorts from exotic locales like Ibiza. Pier 66 Resort Set to open in late 2024, Pier SixtySix Resort will up the bar in luxury living in Fort Lauderdale. Each of the property’s 325 rooms will boast a timeless design with modern luxury touches. The

26 / Our City Plantation / November 2023 / OurCityMedia.com

resort will include a 15,000-square-foot spa, state-of-the-art Fitness Center, dynamic multi-level pool, more than 40,000 square feet of entertainment and meeting space, a marina promenade and one of the largest superyacht marinas on the eastern seaboard, Pier Sixty-Six will introduce 12 restaurants and lounges including several signature restaurants along the newly built waterfront promenade. The property will feature concepts from local and internationally acclaimed chefs. Most notably will be the restoration of the iconic rotating Pier Top lounge, admired for decades for being the only 17th-floor observation deck showing 360-degree panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, Intracoastal Waterway, and Downtown Fort Lauderdale. The glamorous social bar and lounge will come to life with a bird's eye view in an energetic and lively setting. Residences Pier Sixty-Six will include 92 luxury two-to-four-bedroom condominiums situated in four buildings within the property. Tavistock began sales of residences in its initial tower, Azul last year and initiated sales at its Indigo Condominium Residences at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show last month. “There’s truly nothing like Pier Sixty-Six Residences on the Eastern Seaboard,” says Craig Collin, chief operating officer at Tavistock Development Company. “Offering owners a unique collection of sophisticated residences, a world-class marina, and premier resort amenities, The Residences at Pier Sixty-Six will be one of the finest marine communities in the world. Our transformation of Pier Sixty-Six will create a cornerstone gateway to Fort Lauderdale, reinvigorating Pier Sixty-Six’s status as a landmark destination.” The new Pier Sixty-Six will undoubtedly change the dynamic at the south end of Fort Lauderdale Beach. The combination of ultra-luxury residences, a high-end resort, with an integrated marina that is able to accommodate the largest yachts in the world, and what is sure to be the city’s trendiest cocktail lounge will put the place back at the top of Fort Lauderdale’s elite social scene.

S

alvatore “Toti” Granata was born in Catania, Italy, the second-largest city in Sicily. The city was a hotbed of the Mediterranean culinary tradition and was the source of a life-long passion for cooking. He went on to study at the Scuola Italian Pizzaioli in Venice, collaborating with world Pizza Champion Chef Graziano Bertuzzo. After developing businesses and restaurants in Spain, Italy, and Latin America, Toti and his wife Paola and daughters Nicole and Martina came to the United States in 2016. They opened Pizza Lovers Bistro in Weston with one thought: offer authentic Italian meals with top-quality ingredients at affordable prices. Pizza Lovers is an Italian restaurant with a simple and warm ambiance, its culinary offerings include the most authentic flavors of homemade Italian cuisine. One key difference is how they prepare the dough. The two factors for making the best pizzas are time and temperature. It takes 48 hours for our dough to mature properly. This must be done at a very specific temperature. Pizza Lovers offers much more than just pizza! Some other highlights on their menu include authentic risotto alla milanese with ossobuco, spaghetti with clams, lasagna della Nonna, fettuccine al tartufo, swordfish alloa Siciliana and la pizza con la Burrata. ■ LEGALLY SPEAKING

DO I NEED A WILL, A TRUST OR BOTH? WE HEAR THIS QUESTION EVERY DAY! By Andrea L. Jakob, Esq.

A WILL

If you die without a will it is known as dying intestate. While many believe that their close family members “know what they want”, it doesn’t necessarily go your way without a valid will. Instead, their money and property are distributed according to Florida’s intestate succession laws, during a Probate action. In Florida, intestate succession hinges on whether a person is married and has children with their spouse. • If the decedent (one who has passed away) is married and they have children together, the spouse inherits 100 percent of the estate. • If the decedent is married and has children from a previous relationship, the spouse inherits 50 percent of the estate and their children receive the other 50 percent. But even if someone is fine with the state-imposed inheritance laws, a beneficiary will be required to go through the expensive and long process called “Probate.”. The law can only assume what you would want, but it may cause your wishes to go haywire. For instance, imagine you have been in a relationship without a formal marriage certificate for many years and love your partner dearly. If you pass without a will, that partner may not inherit according to intestacy laws. Florida places legally adopted children on the same level as biological children. But step-children will not inherit through intestacy laws.

WHAT IS A TRUST?

A basic Revocable Living Trust is a legal document that creates a relationship between you and a Trustee. You can name yourself as Trustee to manage your own assets. A Trustee will oversee and hold assets on your behalf during your lifetime and on behalf of your beneficiaries upon your passing. There are many different types of trusts such as irrevocable trusts, and a whole slew of alphabet soup trusts such as a SLAT, GRAT, or ILIT.

TRUST VS. WILL

Both trusts and wills determine who will receive your assets, yet the two remain very different. Unlike trusts, which can be used to avoid the probate process, a will cannot. Wills require probate to take effect as desired. I call a will a “Dear Judge Letter,” because a judge will need to review it, make sure it is signed correctly and contains all required elements. While wills take into effect after passing and are intended to support the wishes included in the will for the executors and heirs, trusts take effect once properly signed and are intended to have an impact both in life and in death. This means that a trust may include provisions that determine the steps that are to be taken in the case of mental or physical incapacitation.

W

hiskey Neat Opens: One restaurant/ bar is now two: The southern part of Quarterdeck in Plantation has been remodeled into Whiskey Neat. Whiskey Neat opened about two months ago and the Plantation Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting on Sept. 26. Quarterdeck, at the southeast corner of Flamingo Road and Sunrise Boulevard, opened about 20 years ago. Earlier this year owners closed up the pool/arts/jukebox area, built a separating wall and added insulated ceilings to create a calm speakeasy-type vibe featuring about 230 rare whiskeys. The Quarterdeck menu is available at Whiskey Neat. The signature drink is the Jack D. Armstrong, described by one publication as Filthy Cherry smoked with Old Forester 100-proof rye, Bitter Truth chocolate bitters and a brown sugar cube. I will take their word for it. Budget Approved: The Plantation City Council approved the FY24 budget at the final budget hearing on Sept. 20. The combined fund $252M budget, which took effect Oct. 1, represents a partnership between the administration and the city council to invest in the city of Plantation and improve service delivery throughout departments. Included in the budget are items that touch the daily lives of all our stakeholders from the provision of additional shade structures at our parks to improvements in stormwater, utilities, and public safety. The budget process began back in March, when the City Council, Administration, and departmental leadership got together for strategic planning, where we discussed the City’s direction and departmental needs and wants in the upcoming years. Needs often make it to the budget, wants rarely do. View the Adopted Budget at www.plantation.org/budget. Vacation Rentals: We held our first special magistrate hearing dedicated entirely to the short-term rental cases in September, as we tighten the screws on non-compliant vacation rentals. We are always citing loud party houses and report short-term rental listings that are homesteaded to the Broward County Property Appraiser for homestead status review. This magistrate process adds more tools to our toolbox to deal with them. To see a database of registered vacation rentals or to register your property, go to www. plantation.org/vacationrentals. Update on University: Although we are not doing the work, the city communicates with FDOT about road improvements on University Drive south of Broward Boulevard. The contractor has encountered additional utility conflicts in the southbound direction so the work is behind schedule. The anticipated completion date is now Feb. 28, 2024. FDOT expects to have most of the work completed by the holiday season, however, if there are any additional unforeseen delays in construction, the contractor is required to maintain all driveways open during business hours. For more information on this project, visit www.FDOT.com. National Recovery Month: The city recognized National Recovery Month, and encouraged those in recovery and the people supporting them to continue their journey. Councilmember Louisa Reinstein presented the Proclamation to two Plantation natives, Josh Fenster and Dr. Barry Reiman. Each shared their own struggle with substance abuse and what has become their life mission to help others. National Service Dog Month: Canine Companions brought in service dogs to Council Chambers as part of National Service Dog Month. The group wants to educate the public about the benefits of service dogs and laws protecting them. Visit Canine.org.
