Wishing All A Bountiful Harvest

The month of October often conjures up images of harvests, autumn and falling leaves. Watching leaves turn red and fall is less of a common occurrence here than for our friends up north. Agriculture is, however, still an important part of Broward County and South Florida.

According to the USDA’s 2012 Census of Agriculture, there were almost 15 thousand acres of land being used for farming in Broward County. This farmland generates about $50 million a year in livestock and crop sales. These figures do not include the well-established horse economy in Plantation, Davie and Southwest Ranches.

While most of Broward County is built out with neighborhoods, city parks and commercial developments, there are still over 600 farms producing everything from bell peppers to beef. These farms preserve a past where much of West Broward was composed of ranches and orange groves.

There are a number of farms and nurseries where residents can buy locally grown produce. Check out our calendar section each month to find farmers markets in your area.

7th Annual Adaptive Sports & Recreation Bowl-A-Thon HOSTED BY MEMORIAL REHABILITATION INSTITUTE

On October 1st, the Memorial Rehabilitation Institute is set to host its 7th Annual Adaptive Sports and Recreation Bowl-A-Thon at Sparez Bowling in Davie. Scheduled from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, this annual event supports the invaluable Memorial Rehab Adaptive Sports and Recreation Program.

The program's mission is clear and noble: to provide recreational and athletic experiences specifically tailored for individuals with physical disabilities across all age groups.

The previous year's event witnessed tremendous participation, with over 300 individuals joining and the generous backing of 5 sponsors. Together, they raised an impressive $20,000. Participants can expect to be part of a 7-member team, enjoying two hours of spirited bowling. The funds accumulated during this event have a significant impact. Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation for Advanced and Oligo-Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer

Dr. Donoway is using multi-modality therapy combining Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation with chemo-immuno-radio therapy to treat advanced-stage cancer patients worldwide after they have stopped responding to the standard of care therapy and have been left with few options for further treatment.

“We actually didn’t like each other while in school but met up after we graduated,” said Randy, “I was back in town promoting a comedy show and was handing out flyers at a local club. We stayed out all night and never looked back since.”

The couple then moved to Cleveland Heights, Ohio where they started their family with their oldest son Dominique, now 35.

“Our family now consists of 4 children and 4 grandchildren. My wife received a tremendous work opportunity and decided to relocate to Corona California and became an intricate part of the community there as basketball coaches and mentors. We coached our two youngest sons as my wife would say out of the womb. We adopted our daughter Kayla who completed our family.”

The family moved back to Randy’s hometown of Cleveland Heights Ohio to care for family. They quickly became an integral part their new community. Their two youngest kids, despite the move, thrived in the classroom and excelled in sports both receiving Division 1 scholarships, Malik in basketball to North Carolina Asheville University and Tyreke in football to The Ohio State University.

After 8 years and all the kids out of the house the couple decided to move to South Florida and build a Car Wash.

“We joined the Dirty Dogs Car Wash as a franchisee, and we agreed to purchase a great piece of property at 1821 South

State Rd. 7 North Lauderdale, in December 2020,” said Randy.

The support and encouragement from the community has been overwhelming for the couple. The North Lauderdale/Tamarac Chamber of Commerce, North Lauderdale City Hall, the Fire Department, Broward Sheriffs Office, and residents have been supportive during the buildout.

After over 25 years in the industry, Dirty Dogs wanted to create a different kind of car wash experience, one fueled by a commitment to customers, employees and the communities where the car washes are located. They know anyone can wash a car, but they believe its their values that set Dirty Dogs apart in the industry.
