Timeless Tastes at Lucille's American Cafe

Celebrating 25 Years of Flavor

L

ucille's American Cafe in Weston is celebrating its 25th anniversary! The nostalgic eatery first opened to the Weston community in 1999 and has become the go-to dining location for local families ever since. “The 25 Years have far exceeded our expectations! We opened in 1999 hoping to have a profitable restaurant, but becoming part of the community, helping celebrate important moments in our guests’ lives has been ultimately more rewarding than we realized,” said Owner Beth Nunez, “there have been ups and downs, but becoming part of this great community in Weston has been priceless to us!” Lucille’s provides a welcoming atmosphere that transports diners back to the 1950s and 1960s with its classic and timeless music. The decor evokes the spirit of old Miami, featuring art deco and retro elements with dark woods, black accents, and seafoam green hues. Additionally, the restaurant boasts a beautiful patio that overlooks a serene lake.

Beth and Paul Nunez opened Lucille’s with one goal: to give their customers an authentic experience with wonderful cuisine. At Lucille's, mealtime becomes an opportunity for friends and family to come together, share stories, and enjoy classic comfort food

favorites that evoke memories of home-cooked meals by mom and grandma. Beth and Paul treat their staff like family, and the staff pass that level of hospitality on to their patrons. Dining at Lucille's has been welcoming and comfortable since the day it first opened.

Heavenly Comfort Food

Lucille’s formula has always been comfort food and friendly service. Their dishes are made from scratch, with love, friendly service, and a comfortable atmosphere. “What has given us the competitive advantage is that we truly care about the guest experience when they dine with us, and we believe every visit should be great,” said Nunez, “We have always had very friendly employees that truly care about our guests.” Lucille’s is open for lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch. In addition to their extensive dining menu, Lucille’s also offers beer and wine. You can sip on Mimosas on their lake-side patio while enjoying a delicious Sunday brunch or enjoy a frosty IPA while you sample meatloaf on a January evening. Lucille’s is the perfect place for a comforting and delicious meal in a friendly and comfortable setting. We are looking forward to celebrating another 25 years in Weston!

RE A

he tradition of making New Year’s resolutions dates back thousands of years and has its origins in various cultures and civilizations. While the specific customs and resolutions may have evolved over time, the concept of setting goals and making commitments for self-improvement at the start of a new year has remained a common practice in many parts of the world. The practice of making New Year’s resolutions can be traced back to ancient Babylon, around 4,000 years ago. The Babylonians celebrated the New Year during the spring equinox and made promises to their gods to repay debts and return borrowed items. This was seen as a way to secure favor for the upcoming year. In the early days of the United States, religious and moral resolutions continued to be popular. The practice later evolved to include promises related to self-improvement, such as losing weight or saving money. Today, New Year’s resolutions encompass a wide range of goals and commitments, from personal fitness and health to career aspirations and self-improvement. Whether your resolution for this year is related to fitness, financial success, or learning a new hobby, we wish you the very best in pursuing yours!

SUBLIME MUSIC OPENED THE HOLIDAY SEASON

O

n Saturday evening, December 2, The City of Weston, the Weston Music Society, and the Weston Town Center, in collaboration with the Arts Council of Greater Weston, hosted a marvelous holiday concert. Annalisa Walker, Special Events Manager for the City of Weston, noted. “It was a wonderful way to kick off the holiday season with the Symphony of the Americas Holiday Pops Concert. This free event is brought to Weston with the participation of multiple entities to provide this musical opportunity for all to enjoy. It was fun to watch the younger kids’ impromptu dancing. Kids of all ages – and adults as well - – enjoyed the “snow” that blew throughout the evening”. The event featured the Symphony of the Americas under the baton of their new artistic director and conductor Maestro Pablo Mielgo. He studied at the Royal Conservatory in Madrid, Spain, his native country, and has traveled the world conducting for the United Nations Human Rights concerts and dedicating time to developing young talent. He introduced each number on the program with charm, humor, and holiday spirit. The 500-plus attendees cheered for him and the wonderful program he presented. WMS Co-Vice Presidents of Events Diane Marett and Toby Feuer were delighted with the evening. In addition to providing music programs in the elementary schools and scholarships for those continuing their musical education in college, bringing first-class events to Weston is a major aim of the Weston Music Society. They noted all ages had fun having their pictures taken with Olaf from “Frozen”. 26 / Our City Weston / January 2024

The program was a truly eclectic holiday offering. Favorites included: “Fantasy on Greensleeves”, “A Mad Russian’s Christmas”, “Christmas at the Movies”, “Maoz Tzur”, the song sung when lighting the Chanukah candles, and a rousing “Christmas Festival” of standard favorites. A special highlight was the performance of soprano Kyaunee Richardson. Her rendition of “O Holy Night” brought the audience to their feet, as did her closing number, the jewel song “Glitter and Be Gay” from Leonard Bernstein’s “Candide”. WMS President Lou Marett commented, “It was such a pleasure to see so many families with children and seniors all enjoying the beautiful music. Music has the power to bring us together and this concert did indeed do that”.

Beyond the Finish Line Rotary Club of Weston Celebrates 26 Years of Community, Fitness, and Giving

O

n Sunday, December 3, the Rotary Club of Weston proudly marked the 26th edition of the Rotary Run for Tomorrow, a fun and impactful community event that has become a beloved tradition for the City of Weston. This annual event, featuring the Half-Marathon, 5K, 10K, and the City of Weston Commission Cup 1-Mile Family Walk and Festival, not only promotes health and fitness but also shines a light on charitable giving. Over the years, this event has generated well over $2 million, channeling support directly to local charities, non-profit organizations, and The Rotary Foundation. Participants in the Rotary Run for Tomorrow had options, there was a HalfMarathon, a 5K, or a 10 to choose from. Friends, families, and kids of all ages were encouraged to join in the festivities with the Commission Cup challenge and the Health & Fitness Festival. The Commission Cup 1-Mile Family Walk had participation from Weston's seven elementary schools. The school with the most student participation, percentage-wise, received the coveted Commission Cup, with Imagine Weston emerging as the proud winner, securing both the trophy and a $3,000 cash prize. Everglades Elementary School claimed the runner-up position, earning a commendable prize of $2,000. The YMCA put on an obstacle course with students from each elementary school taking part for the chance to win an ice cream party for their entire school! Congratulations to Indian Trace Elementary for taking the cake… or should we say sundae? The Family Health and Fitness Festival was open to the public and featured over 50 booths and event locations. Attendees were treated to a number of health-related and sports activities, competitions, obstacle courses, a dunk tank, an event stage, and a raffle for a grand prize vacation package worth $3,000. This event would not have been possible without the endless hours of dedication from volunteers and valued community sponsors. 28 / Our City Weston / January 2024

The Rotary Club of Weston would like to extend a huge thank you to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital for once again being a title sponsor and for all they do for the health and wellness of our community. Special thanks to UKG, The Mohsin & Fauzia Jaffer Foundation, DynaServe, Cleveland Clinic, Memorial Healthcare, Pink Angels Memorial Foundation, PPS Premier, Starbucks, Kind Bars, Guacatacos, El Colombiano, Hooters, Freedland Harwin Valori, Florida Blue, Rick Case, Great Waste, BoardroomPR, Broward Health and more. Also, we couldn’t have done it without our food sponsors who kept our runners and families fueled all day long. Thanks to Starbucks, Kind Bars, Publix, Panna, Bravo Supermarket, Alpina, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Costco, Wendy’s and Fresh Market. The Rotary Club of Weston is proud to show that dedication, community spirit, and a commitment to “service above self” can make a lasting difference. The true reward will be seeing how the funds raised through the Rotary Run for Tomorrow will enable the Rotary Club of Weston to extend its charitable work and bring smiles to even more faces—both locally and around the world

It is no surprise that men and women who were willing to join the armed forces were also willing to selflessly participate in the program. MVP is co-directed by two prominent physicians: John Concato, M.D., M.S., M.P.H., a professor of medicine at Yale University, and J. Michael Gaziano, M.D., M.P.H., a professor of medicine at Harvard University. Some of the research breakthroughs directly attributable to MVP include: Height and Health Risks An MVP study involving 280,000 veterans revealed 127 medical conditions with risk factors linked to height. Tall individuals appear to have a reduced risk of cardiovascular problems but an increased risk for conditions like peripheral neuropathy and circulatory disorders. Yogurt and Heart Health Research on nearly 200,000 veterans in 2021 indicated that higher yogurt consumption correlates with increased levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or "good cholesterol," potentially reducing heart disease risk and increasing longevity. Racial Disparities in COVID-19 Outcomes: MVP researchers discovered a link between two mutations of the APOL1 gene and increased risk of acute kidney failure in Black patients with COVID-19. This finding, based on data from over 150,000 Black veterans, is leading to new drug research targeting the APOL1 gene. Genetic Links Between PTSD, TBI, and Dementia A study found a genetic connection between PTSD, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and an increased risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease. This research highlights the importance of genetic factors in these conditions and may improve screening and treatment.

Weston Native

S

eaman Sebastian Mojica, a native of Weston, Florida, serves the U.S. Navy assigned to Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center, the largest diving facility in the world. Mojica graduated from Cypress Bay High School in 2020. The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Weston. “Growing up in my hometown, I learned that if you want to change your life, you have to do it yourself,” said Mojica. “In the Navy, you have to make stuff happen for yourself because no one else will do it for you.” Mojica joined the Navy one year ago. “I joined the Navy because I wanted to do an important job that served a greater purpose,” said Mojica. More than 1,200 students from the Navy, Marine Corps, Army, Air Force and Coast Guard train at Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center each year. These students include candidates for submarine SCUBA, U.S. Navy deep sea divers, Seabee underwater construction divers, joint service diving officers and explosive ordnance disposal officers. Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center houses 23 certified diver life support systems, which include two diving simulation facilities capable of pressing divers to a depth of 300 feet, an aquatics training facility with the second largest pool in the U.S., a submarine lock-out trunk that holds nearly one million gallons of water and two 133-foot Yard Diving Tenders for open ocean diving support. “Having a cadre of students who are eager to learn and extremely hardworking, ensures the future of our Navy Diver and Explosive Ordnance Disposal communities,” said Cmdr. Troy Lawson, commanding officer, Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center. Serving in the Navy means Mojica is part of a team that is taking on new importance in America’s focus on rebuilding military readiness, strengthening alliances and reforming business practices in support of the National Defense Strategy. “The Navy is important to national defense because we take care of problems that most Americans are not even aware of,” said Mojica. With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the Internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to trained sailors and a strong Navy. Mojica has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service.

“I am most proud of getting to come to the Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center,” said Mojica. “Not a lot of people can make it to this point, so I am proud that I got this far.” As Mojica and other sailors continue to train and perform missions, they take pride in serving their country in the U.S. Navy. “Being in the Navy means serving a bigger purpose,” said Mojica. Mojica is grateful to others for helping make a Navy career possible. “I want to thank coach Allen Held for teaching me to have a strong work ethic and for changing my life,” added Mojica.

HEALTHY VISION FOR LIFE

A

s we age, our eyes and vision naturally undergo changes that can affect our ability to see clearly and comfortably. These age-related changes can be frustrating and even scary, but there are steps we can take to maintain healthy

vision for life. One common age-related change in the eye is presbyopia, a condition that makes it difficult to focus on objects up close. Presbyopia typically begins to affect people in their 40s and is caused by a loss of elasticity in the lens of the eye. This can make reading and other close-up tasks difficult and can be corrected with eyeglasses or contact lenses. Another age-related eye condition is cataracts, which occur when the lens of the eye becomes cloudy or opaque. This can cause vision to become blurry or distorted, and can also cause sensitivity to glare and light. Cataracts can be treated

By Dr. Jane Therrien, Optometric Physician with surgery to remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a clear artificial lens. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a condition that affects the macula, a small area in the center of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. AMD can cause vision loss, and is more common in people over the age of 50. While there is no cure for AMD, there are treatments available to slow its progression and preserve vision. Glaucoma is another age-related eye condition that can cause vision loss. It occurs when the pressure inside the eye becomes too high, damaging the optic nerve. Glaucoma can be treated with medications or surgery, and early detection is key to preserving vision. In addition to these age-related eye conditions, it is important to protect our eyes from other hazards as we age. UV radiation from the sun can damage the eyes and increase the risk of cataracts and AMD, so it is important to wear sunglasses or a hat with a wide brim when outdoors. Smoking also increases the risk of eye diseases, so it is important to quit or never start smoking to maintain healthy vision.

46 / Our City Weston / January 2024 / OurCityMedia.com

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can also help preserve vision as we age. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids has been shown to be beneficial for eye health. Exercise can also help improve circulation to the eyes and reduce the risk of certain eye conditions. Regular eye exams are an important part of maintaining healthy vision as we age. During an eye exam, an eye doctor can detect and diagnose any potential problems early on, allowing for timely treatment and better chances of preserving vision. It is recommended that adults over the age of 40 have their eyes checked every two to four years, and more frequently if they have a family history of eye disease or other risk factors. In conclusion, aging can bring about changes in our eyes and vision, but there are steps we can take to maintain healthy vision for life. This includes protecting our eyes from UV radiation and smoking, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and getting regular eye exams. By taking care of our eyes, we can continue to see the world around us clearly and comfortably as we age.

■ LEGALLY SPEAKING

CAN I USE A COMPUTER OR AI

TO WRITE MY WILL?

F

By Andrea L. Jakob, Esq.

or many, a New Year’s Resolution may be to finally create your “Estate Plan.” You might be curious about using artificial intelligence “AI” or platforms such as Legal Zoom, Rocket Lawyer, or similar online services to write the plan for you. While these tools are accessible and cost-effective (in the short term), it's important to recognize more is required. Believe it or not, to ensure these documents are legally valid and aligned with your intentions, you need a human! This human should have a strong grasp of all estate plan concepts, potential pitfalls, and your state’s law.

Ask yourself:

• How well do I understand options to protect my money, property, family, or business if I have a medical emergency, a short- or long-term incapacity, or after death? • What is my financial situation regarding property, income, or debt? • Is my family structure complicated? • Am I undecided about my wishes (how to divide my money and property, when to distribute it, or what to include in an advanced directive)? • Will my family get along if my will is unclear? • Will someone inherit before they understand the value of their inheritance? • What if your adult child is on the brink of divorce, will the soon-to-be ex-spouse receive anything from an inheritance?

Errors That Make Online Documents Unenforceable

The following are common mistakes in online documents that may require a court to interpret them or lead to fighting among your loved ones: • Ambiguity in wording. Imagine a will states: “I leave my property to my children" without specifying which children by name. This could lead to a family feud if you have three kids and the AI-written will doesn’t clarify which children will inherit. • Improper use of legal terms. Let's say an AI-generated will uses the term "heirs" instead of "beneficiaries." This misuse of legal terminology might lead to unintended consequences. For example, distant relatives or even creditors could potentially claim a share of the estate as "heirs.". • Inconsistent terminology. Using different terms to refer to the same asset (e.g., house, residence, homestead, property) may create confusion about what is being inherited. • Improper witnessing and notarization. Imagine the chaos if your estate ends up in court because the will wasn't correctly witnessed and notarized. • Lack of clarity in distribution. Vague instructions regarding who will receive your accounts and property or how they will receive them, such as "divide my estate fairly among my children," may cause disputes if there is no clear definition of terms like fairly. • Failure to address contingencies. Not accounting for contingencies, such as what to do if a beneficiary predeceases you is a problem we see quite often. If the Online Will doesn’t specify an alternate beneficiary, asset distribution would be subject to state law. • Inadequate powers of attorney. Failing to designate agents for financial or medical decision-making authority, creates complications during incapacity and may require your loved ones to get a court involved.

■ SAFETY CORNER

Home Safety Tips For The New Year By Todd E. Draizin, District Chief, City of Weston Melanie Brocato, M.Ed. Life Safety Educator

N

ow that the holidays are done and dusted, it's time to get our homes back to their regular state. Let's shift our focus to some New Year's Resolutions that can keep our families safe from dangers. One idea for a resolution is to be all about home safety. Start the new year by committing to keeping things organized and safe. Falls from heights, especially when it involves ladders and poorly stored stuff, can cause an unexpected trip to the emergency room. Here are some easy tips to help you stick to your goals on safe storage and ladder use, keeping your family accident-free and cozy at home. Making sure your things are stored right is a big deal in minimizing mess and avoiding falls. By organizing and securing your belongings, you're creating a superhero-safe space for you and everyone around. Follow these easy-breezy tips for top-notch storage: • Clear Walkways: Keep paths and stairs free of random stuff. Tripping over things on the floor is a recipe for disaster. • Shelves and Cabinets: Invest in solid shelves and cabinets to store things at different heights. It's not just about keeping things neat; it also stops stuff from falling and causing injuries. • Heavy Stuff Down Low: When you've got heavy things to store, make sure they're on lower shelves. This way, you're less likely to have things crashing down on you. • Label and Sort: Get a labeling system to spot things easily. Organize your boxes based on how often you use them, with the regularly used stuff within arm's reach. • Let There Be Light: Keep your storage areas well-lit for clear visibility. Good lighting means fewer missteps and fewer accidents in your storage zones. Ladders are like magic wands for reaching high-up spots but using them wrong can turn your magic trick into a not-so-fun fall. Make ladder safety your superhero move to dodge accidents: • Pick the Right Ladder: Match your ladder to the job at hand. Think about how high you need to go and what type of ladder is your best bet. • Check Before You Climb: Give your ladder a once-over before you start your climb. Look out for damage, wobbles, or anything that seems off. Fix or replace anything that needs attention. • Stable and Level: Set up your ladder on solid ground. If you're working outdoors, throw in some leg levelers or stabilizers to keep things steady on wonky terrain. • Watch the Weight: Know your ladder's weight limit. Make sure it can handle you, plus any tools or stuff you're carrying up there. • Three-Point Contact: Always keep three points of contact on the ladder. Whether it's two hands and a foot or two feet and a hand, this keeps you steady and lowers the chance of falling. • Stay in the Safe Zone: Don't overreach or lean too far. Keep your body within those ladder side rails at all times. By working these easy storage and ladder tips into your routine, you're turning your home into a safety-first haven. A commitment to tidy spaces and careful ladder use not only makes your living space safer but also gives you the power to tackle tasks without any worries. Remember, the key to avoiding accidents is being aware and responsible in everything we do every day. 50 / Our City Weston / January 2024 / OurCityMedia.com

■ REAL ESTATE

2024 REAL ESTATE OUTLOOK:

NAVIGATING MARKET DYNAMICS AMIDST PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS & ECONOMIC TRENDS

A

s we embark on the journey into 2024, the real estate market presents various challenges and prospects. This year is marked by the merging of the presidential elections and notable economic shifts, affecting everything from mortgage rates to housing inventory. Let's try to dissect the 2024 real estate market, considering the influence of political events alongside Zillow's economic predictions.

The Influence of Presidential Elections

Historically, presidential elections have been pivotal in shaping the real estate market. These election cycles often bring a period of uncertainty and volatility as potential policy changes loom on the horizon. The upcoming elections may see policies directly affecting taxation, zoning, and housing affordability. However, it’s crucial to remember that real estate often withstands short-term electoral turbulence, maintaining its course in the long run. The key takeaway is the essential role of stability and consumer confidence, which remain fundamental, irrespective of the election results.

By Rose Sklar

Zillow’s Market Predictions for 2024

Zillow's insights for 2024 paint a cautiously optimistic picture. A gradual increase in housing options and a slight improvement in affordability are on the cards. The "higher for longer" mortgage rates suggest a new normal in the housing finance landscape. This adjustment is expected to bring more homes to the market as homeowners reconcile with the enduring nature of current rates. Consequently, this increase in listings is projected to ease the pressure on prices, offering some relief to buyers.

Real Estate Market Dynamics

We are witnessing a pivotal shift in homeowner behavior and market trends. The increase in home listings indicates a changing mindset among homeowners, driven by the realization that the low mortgage rates of the past may not return soon. As affordability challenges persist, the ripple effect is a notable rise in single-family rentals. Urban and suburban rental markets are also transforming, with areas closer to city centers gaining traction over more distant locales. This is evidenced in the construction all over Fort Lauderdale and South Florida.

Technological Advancements in Real Estate 2024 is also a landmark year for technological innovation in real estate.

Artificial intelligence is poised to revolutionize the way we buy and sell homes. Zillow predicts a surge in AI-powered tools to enhance the real estate experience, offering more insightful interactions for buyers, sellers, and agents alike.

Rose’s Take

My prediction for Weston is as interest rates are expected to decrease next year, I advise sellers to price their homes in the striking zone. It's important to acknowledge the value buyers place on renovated properties, especially given the current challenges in accessing reputable contractors and the rising costs of construction. I advised sellers to compare their homes realistically with recently renovated properties, setting prices that reflect their actual condition and upgrades to attract buyers. The real estate market in 2024 stands at a crossroads of political, economic, and technological influences. Understanding these multifaceted dynamics is crucial for anyone looking to make informed decisions in the real estate sphere. While the market may present its challenges, it also offers opportunities for those with the proper knowledge and strategies. In essence, 2024 offers a landscape where proactive, informed decision-making can pave the way for success in the real estate market.

SKLAR TEAM’S 6TH ANNUAL COOKIE EXCHANGE RAISES SPIRITS AND TOYS FOR CHILDREN

W

eston real estate gurus Rose and Dean Sklar recently held their 6th Annual Cookie Exchange event, and despite the rainy weather, they experienced an impressive turnout. The event raised over $1200 in toys, which brought holiday cheer to local children. The Cookie Exchange is more than just a social event; it's a symbol of the holiday spirit of giving and community. This year's event had a special focus on collecting toys for the children at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital. The Sklars

and their team aimed to make sure that no child feels left out during the festive season. Each attendee was encouraged to contribute a toy, which added to the joy of children at the hospital. This gathering goes beyond exchanging cookies; it's about uniting the community in the spirit of the season and making a tangible difference in the lives of others. Rose, Dean, their team, and community members came together to make this season brighter and more meaningful for everyone involved.

PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PRP) USE IN THE FOOT & ANKLE

GET BACK TO DOING THE THINGS YOU ENJOY! By Dr. Carlo A. Messina, DPM

H

ealing after an injury involves a well-orchestrated and complex series of events where proteins in the blood act as messengers to regulate the entire process. Many proteins involved in the healing process are derived from small cell fragments in the blood called platelets. Platelets are small, colorless, cell fragments present in the blood. They are formed in the bone marrow and are freely passing through the bloodstream in a resting state. However, when an injury occurs, the platelets become activated and start to gather at the injury site to release beneficial proteins called growth factors. This is the beginning of the healing process. For many years, blood components derived from the patient and then delivered to the site of injury have created growing interest for use in orthopedic procedures. New research and technology have expanded the application of this therapy for use in orthopedic procedures.

What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?

Platelet Rich Plasma is a concentration of platelets and growth factors created from a small amount of your own blood. Increased levels of growth factors have the potential to improve signaling and recruitment of cells.

What conditions can it treat?

• Arthritis (Foot or Ankle) • Ligament Injuries (Acute or Chronic) • Heel Spurs • Tendon Injuries (Acute or Chronic) • Joint Pain • Shin Splints • Plantar Fasciitis • Chronic Inflammatory Conditions • Achilles Tendonitis • Chronic Nerve Irritation (Neuritis)

How does the PRP process work?

Our doctors will recover a small amount of blood from your arm using a small needle and a specially designed syringe. The blood then goes through a rapid spinning process that separates and concentrates the platelets and other beneficial growth factors from the blood. The entire PRP production process is usually done in less than 20 minutes.

What happens after that?

The injected area will be anesthetized with a local anesthetic (Lidocaine). The blood with its PRP will be injected into the area directly or with the aid of ultrasound or x-ray.

Am I a candidate for treatment with PRP?

Speak with our doctors and ask if PRP is right for you. Dr. Messina will perform an examination to make a determination if the use of PRP will benefit you. If you are on anti-inflammatory medications or blood thinners, your physician may temporarily discontinue the use of these until your treatment has taken place.

What are the risks associated with this treatment?

PRP uses your body's own natural properties to treat your injury. Side effects utilizing PRP systems are very uncommon.

■ FROM TEE TO GREEN

GETTING THE MOST FROM THE RANGE By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional

I

t does not matter if you are a pro golfer or a high handicap player, one of the biggest challenges golfers face is taking their so-called practice game to the golf course and performing as well on the course. Many players can hit the ball great on the range and putt well on the practice green, but when they step on the course, they become a different person. These players cannot play with confidence nor can they play to the level they are capable of playing given their present physical skills. What is mysteriously changing the moment you walk off the range or practice green and step onto the course? Nothing – it is your mindset that changes, not physical skills or ability. You still have to hit the ball to a target and putt the ball in the cup. Why is it that you walk off the practice tee, step up onto the first tee, and not stripe it on the course as you did on the range a few minutes ago? Usually it is your perception of the importance of the round. As you tee it up on the first hole, hitting your ball to a target is no longer as simple a task as it was on the range (at least that is what you think). Now that you are on the course, you think “it counts”! You only have one ball and one chance at hitting the ball to the target. Then the pressure mounts (but only because you put the pressure on yourself to perform) and you focus more on the result and trying not to screw up. If this scenario sounds too familiar, you first need to understand how you are blocking your talents from shining on the golf course. Does your mindset change when you get on the course to a mindset of avoidance golf or defensive golf? That’s right, defensive golf! Players can get into mental quicksand on the golf course in ways they are not aware of including the mindset to avoid errors. Therefore, the first step to improving your performance is to understand how you block your ability on the course. The first sign that gets in the way is you try too hard to play well. Most highly motivated players, sometimes perfectionists, have trouble playing well on the course because they try too hard to play well. You cannot play your best golf when you try to too hard to hit a perfect shot, make every putt, or hit every drive long and straight. You might be thinking to yourself “Aren’t I supposed to try hard?” Trying hard does not help you play better golf. The harder you try in golf, the more you tense up and control your swing.

■ ANIMAL HEALTH

Heartworm Disease and Your Dog By Miguel E. Cordova, DVM

H

eartworm disease is a serious and sometimes fatal disease for dogs. It is caused by a parasite called Dirofilaria immitis that is transmitted by mosquitoes. Mosquitoes become infected by biting dogs that are already infected with heartworms. Any dog living or visiting an area that has mosquitoes and infected dogs is at risk of getting heartworm disease. THE HEARTWORM LIFE CYCLE IN DOGS ▸ A mosquito ingests tiny, immature worms, called microfilariae, in a blood meal from a heartworm-infected host animal. ▸ The microfilariae develop inside the mosquito, becoming infective larvae within 2 to 3 weeks. ▸ The mosquito transmits the infective larvae when it bites a new host. ▸ The larvae develop inside the dog’s body tissues, then enter the bloodstream and move toward the heart and blood vessels. The larvae grow into adult worms inside the heart, where they will live until they die (about 5 to 7 years). Adult heartworms can grow to over a foot in length. ▸ After 5 to 6 months inside the heart, female worms release microfilariae into the blood, and the cycle starts again. SIGNS OF DISEASE Dogs infected with heartworms may not show any signs of disease for 1 or 2 years. By then, the disease may have already damaged the dog’s heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys. The most common signs of heartworm infection are a dry, chronic cough; general weakness; shortness of breath; and lack of stamina. These signs occur because the heartworms clog the heart and blood vessels, making the heart less efficient and reducing the blood supply. All of the signs associated with heartworm disease will be more noticeable after extensive exercise. In advanced cases, the dog may have congestive heart failure, swelling in the abdomen or legs, weight loss, and/or anemia. 60 / Our City Weston / January 2024

DIAGNOSING THE DISEASE The most common way to detect heartworm disease is from a blood test, which detects antigens produced by the adult female heartworms. Your veterinarian may also look at the blood sample under a microscope to see if any microfilariae are present. If the results of these tests are positive for heartworm, additional blood work, X-rays, and echocardiograms may be in order to further determine how extensive the infection is, the number of worms present in your dog’s body, and the amount of damage they have done to her vital organs. These tests can also help determine whether or not your dog will be able to tolerate the heartworm treatment. TREATING HEARTWORM The vast majority of heartworm patients are treated successfully. Treatment consists of both eliminating the parasites and managing the heart, vascular, and systemic problems caused by the infection. If the infection is not too severe, your

veterinarian will likely give your dog a special medication to kill the adult heartworms. Your dog will then need a month’s rest to rid herself of the decomposing worms. Following this, you will need to give your dog some medicine to kill the microfilariae. Your pet should then be put on a prevention program to avoid becoming re-infected. PREVENTING HEARTWORM The easiest way to manage heartworm disease is to prevent it. This can be done with oral and topical medications. Discuss the available preventatives with your veterinarian to find out which medication is best for your dog. Many veterinarians now recommend year-round heartworm prevention. ⊲ Animal Health Center @ Weston is “The Gentle Practice You Can Rely On”. Dr. Miguel E. Cordova and his staff are committed to caring for your precious pets. The practice is located at 2701 Executive Park Drive, Suite 1. As a part of this larger chamber family, we are able to provide more resources, training, and networking opportunities for Weston businesses. Start your year by marking your calendars for every third Wednesday to attend our Membership Lunch and meet other business and community leaders. Each event includes opportunities to network, get legislative updates from elected officials, and learn from our sponsors. We've got plans to make this year the most epic one yet, celebrating our local gems, reaching membership milestones, and representing the best interests of our local economy. By making your business our business, we remain engaged in the priorities of our membership, businesses, community, and future generations of professionals and their business needs. For more information and our event calendar, visit www.westonflchamber.com.
