Andrea Fadda, Zona Blu Executive Chef & Jorge Poviones, Executive Director Bonaventure Town Center Club

Outdoor Dining Patio

14 / Our City Weston / February 2024 / OurCityMedia.com

fter months of anticipation, Zona Blu is excitedly preparing for the grand opening of its second Weston restaurant. The swanky new space is located inside one of the most recognizable locales in the area – The Bonaventure Town Center Club at 16690 Saddle Club Road. This eagerly awaited venue with an anticipated Spring 2024 opening is dubbed “Zona Blu at Bonaventure Town Center Club” and showcases a unique blend of Sardinian décor with a modern twist. Corporate Executive Chef Andrea Fadda, alongside his partners Deborah Marras Bautista and Sheila Marras David, are thrilled to invite guests to experience this new culinary destination, a testament to their commitment to bringing exceptional dining experiences to the Weston community. Highlights of the new location include a full-service bar, an inviting patio overlooking the pool and lake, and spectacular sunsets paired with Zona Blu’s award-winning cuisine. Chef Fadda is excited to showcase his years of experience working in 5-star resorts and restaurants in Sardinia and around the globe. With over 30 years of experience as an Executive Chef, Fadda maintains a belief in the vast possibilities of culinary innovation, all while staying true to his Sardinian roots. Thanks to this joint venture with the Bonaventure Town Center Club, Zona Blu will offer the public a

lunch and dinner menu in their restaurant. This new location can also serve as the perfect destination for special occasions, business lunches, anniversaries, religious celebrations, etc. For larger celebrations, guests can reserve one of the Bonaventure Town Center's three newly renovated banquet rooms with catered services offered by Zona Blu. “Our objective is to provide an elegant setting, 5-star service, and (of course) a menu using only the most sought-after ingredients and highest-quality products from around the globe. We are excited to launch a Sunday brunch like Weston has never seen. Plans are underway for live music, Sunday pig roasts, and a dynamic new lunch menu and dinner menu," says Chef Fadda. The original location, 189 Weston Road, will remain the beloved casual, family-style establishment that has been serving Weston since 2015. It will continue to offer the best pizza, pasta, and specials, as well as new menu items focused on family dining from its kitchen. In fact, the “OG” location will be referred to as “La Cucina di Zona Blu” (Zona Blu Kitchen), precisely what you’d picture when you walk into a Sardinian trattoria on our beautiful island. “Zona Blu has been a labor of love for Chef Fadda, Shelia, and me. We take great pride in our creation.

The expansion of our brand was a journey of careful consideration and planning. It took us years to find the perfect location and the ideal concept. Now, we’re thrilled to open our doors at the Bonaventure Town Center Club (BTCC),” says owner Deborah Bautista. “Above all, Zona Blu is a family-oriented establishment. This new location will offer another wonderful opportunity to serve and cater to our beloved community.” Stay tuned for Zona Blu at Bonaventure Town Center Club’s opening date. The Zona Blu family looks forward to welcoming you for lunch and dinner from Monday to Saturday and for an exquisite brunch and dinner every Sunday. n August 1934, a 39-year-old Southern Baptist preacher named Michael traveled to Berlin, Germany, for the Fifth World Baptist Alliance Meeting. The meeting is a global gathering of Baptists held every five years. It is organized by the Baptist World Alliance (BWA), a worldwide fellowship of Baptist churches and organizations. The 1934 event was particularly notable because it was held in Berlin shortly after the Nazi Party rose to power. While at the meeting, Michael saw how Nazi ideology combined elements of nationalism, racism, anti-Semitism, and anti-communism impacted Germans. He saw parallels to the segregation policies in his home state of Georgia. He realized that the oppression of minority groups was a global problem. Michael also learned about the teachings of Martin Luther, the 16th-century leader of the Protestant Reformation. Luther’s teachings emphasized salvation by faith alone, the authority of the Bible over Church traditions, and the priesthood of all believers. In 1517, Luther famously nailed his “95 Theses” to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg. The theses called out corrupt practices of the Catholic Church at the time and led to the formation of new Christian denominations collectively known as Protestantism. Luther’s teachings left such an indelible mark on Michael that shortly after he returned home to the United States, he chose to change his name to Martin. Interestingly, he also changed the name of his five-year-old son to Martin. That five-year-old son, Martin Luther King Jr., would grow up to have as significant an impact on the world as his namesake. What a difference a name makes!

United Way's 'Adopt-A-Family' Gifting Events

Bring Joy to Over 300 Broward County Families in Need

I

n a heartwarming initiative, the United Way of Broward County's Commission on Behavioral Health & Drug Prevention orchestrated "Adopt-A-Family" gifting events across mobile home parks in Coconut Creek, Davie, and Hollywood this December. Over 300 families in need from Broward County were the beneficiaries of this generous endeavor, receiving holiday gifts that brought joy and warmth to their festive season. The events, adorned with a festive holiday theme, offered more than just

presents. Families immersed themselves in the holiday spirit with live musical performances, engaging raffles, gingerbread cookie decorating, and delightful selfie stations. Volunteers and dedicated staff from the United Way distributed over 350 gifts, catering to children aged 1 to 18. The array of gifts included baby toys, mega blocks, skateboards, scooters, sports equipment, board games, and creative items like mandala coloring books and gratitude journals. This commendable program is an integral part of the United Way of Broward County's Commission on Behavioral Health & Drug Prevention's Latino Initiative. Operating throughout the year, the initiative focuses on enhancing the health, education, and financial well-being of residents in mobile home communities. Through such initiatives, the United Way continues to make a positive impact on the lives of those in need, fostering a sense of community and support during the holiday season and beyond.

Ninth Annual Weston World Fest RETURNS WITH NEW ADDITIONS

O

n Sunday, March 3, 2024, Weston World Fest returns to Weston Regional Park. Presented by the Arts Council of Greater Weston, this free event celebrates world cultures via international booths, cuisine, and on-stage performances. Hours are 12 noon-4:00 pm. Carol Lema, Vice President of the Arts Council and event founder/director, notes: "As we approach our ninth year celebrating this festival, I'm touched by the number of volunteers who continue to bring so much enthusiasm and authenticity to the event. It truly is our hardworking volunteers plus the tremendous support we receive from the City of Weston, from Broward County and from sponsors that make a community event of this size possible." The theme this year is “Folk Tales, Fables and Fairy Tales”. Twenty country booths and a Theme Village will present their interpretation of this theme. They are manned by friends and neighbors from our diverse community. New this year are The Magic Cow, Uruguay and French Polynesia. Each will have creative activities and displays highlighting their cultures. An international food court will feature food, drinks, and desserts for purchase. In addition to past favorites, this year will include The Magic Cow, Kulinary Rhapsody, and an authentic French dessert Citroen from Le Macaron. Throughout the afternoon, there will be international performances. New this year are Polish harpist Karina Kusz, Wayna Music of the Andes, a drum unit from India, and Brazilian vocalists. Two special favorites are the American Sign Language advanced honors dance group and the Cypress Bay Sound of Thunder Marching Band, which will open the festival. Annalisa Walker, Special Events Manager for the City of Weston “This culturally diverse event provides the community with an opportunity to explore the world in simply a few hours. Bringing people together in this way, is valuable but also makes Weston unique”. Kids elementary age and above can participate in passport program activities. All ages can enjoy storytelling, juggling, henna art, photo ops, and family-safe archery. Don’t miss these activities and more. 32 / Our City Weston / February 2024

President Laura Dobrzanski summed it up perfectly. "We are thrilled to continue to organize such a significant event every year that brings together so many unique organizations including many of our local community partners such as the Weston Music Society, Weston Art Guild, Weston Community Garden Society, Weston Friends of the Library, and others in which we can all unify around the celebration of culture and diversity."

TECH TRIUMPH: SAGEMONT PREP STUDENTS

Shine in Vex Robotics Competition

S

agemont Preparatory School's Upper School students recently made waves at the Jingle Bots Vex Robotics Competition, clinching an impressive fourth place among 47 competing teams. This spirited event, held at South Dade Senior High was orchestrated by the globally acclaimed Robotics Education and Competition Foundation. The heart of the Jingle Bots competition lies in a captivating engineering challenge cleverly packaged as the game "VEX Robotics Competition Over Under," where students, with guidance from their teachers and mentors, build innovative robots to navigate the intricate game tasks. Teams, consisting of two alliances— one “red” and one “blue”—composed of two teams each, compete in exhilarating matches. The action unfolds in a fifteen-second Autonomous Period, followed by a dynamic one-minute and forty-five-second Driver Controlled Period. The strategic game objective involves outscoring the opposing alliance by skillfully placing Triballs in goals and elevating robots as the grand finale. A standout feature is the coveted Autonomous Bonus, where eight bonus points are awarded to the alliance that dominates the Autonomous Period, adding a thrilling twist to the competition dynamics. Sagemont's stellar performance in the competition resonates with the school's dedication to cultivating a technology-rich environment. Aligned with national standards, the institution molds students into proficient digital citizens. Teachers at Sagemont intentionally integrate technology into the curriculum, emphasizing purposeful use. This approach not only fosters academic excellence but also hones critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, ensuring that Sagemont Prep students not only succeed academically but also flourish in the dynamic landscape of ever-evolving technology. 36 / Our City Weston / February 2024 / OurCityMedia.com

■ POSITIVE PARENTING

A NEW FAMILY OF FOUR By Molly Brousseau

W

elcoming a new baby into your home is a wonderful, but stressful time. Welcoming a sibling into your home adds another layer of stress and fear. How will the sibling react? What if they don’t like them? How am I going to find time for 2? Is it possible to love another the way I love my first? These were questions that were on my mind recently when we welcomed our baby girl in November, and the first thing I will tell you is YES you absolutely have enough love for them both! First things first, PREPARE! It is important to talk to your toddler or child as much as possible about the new baby before they arrive. And start early, remember as you begin to show, all the attention goes from “how cute your little boy is” to “awe are you ready to be a big brother”. For our family, we read books, watched videos, and talked to our son about his friends or family members who were ‘big brothers’ already. This helped him put into perspective what

it really means and reiterated to him that go outside and play right after nap time”. the baby was going to be here forever. The creators of Little Big Feelings shares We talked about what it meant to be a big “If you blame the baby for taking away brother and brainstormed ideas of how he your time and attention, your toddler will was going to be able to help. naturally start to resent the baby.” We want Speaking of help, let them! I know our toddlers to feel loved, seen, and secure. sometimes it’s nerve-racking having the Remember, for most families, adding older sibling around the brand-new baby another member will be crazy, stressful, and but giving them age-appropriate tasks exhausting at times. But it will also be one can make them feel part of and make a of the greatest blessings. Take it a day at a baby-centered activity (like diaper changing) time, stay present and enjoy the moments, a shared experience. This can look like the mess can wait. Most importantly, relax, anything from asking them to bring you a you got this!! diaper or simply to sing a song to keep the baby calm and entertained. Remember to say things like “big brother/sister”, “big helper” or “You need to teach the baby everything you already know!”. This makes them feel powerful and more in control. And what toddler doesn’t like control? The next thing is simple, “don’t blame the baby”. Instead of “I can’t right now, I need to feed your sister” say “Yes, I would love to come play that game with you in 5 minutes, why don’t you go get it set up so we’re ready” or “We can’t go outside your sister is sleeping” try, “Yes, we can

"You don’t have to have insignia on your collars, or stripes on your shoulders, to be a leader… And, I appreciate all the work that so many others have done for me to be in the position I am today.” Sheriff Gregory Tony's impact on the Broward County Sheriff's Office and the wider community is undeniable. His commitment to excellence, community engagement, and progressive leadership continues to inspire those around him and promises a future of inclusive, community-centric law enforcement.

■ ASK THE EXPERT

S

ince your 40s, you have probably noticed that you needed glasses to see up close. You may have more trouble adjusting to glare or distinguishing some colors, particularly shades of green or blue. These changes are a normal part of aging. They alone cannot stop you from enjoying an active lifestyle. They will not stop you from maintaining your independence. In fact, you can live an active life well into your golden years without ever experiencing severe vision loss. But as you age, you should know you are at higher risk of developing age-related eye diseases and conditions.

What Are These Diseases?

These conditions affect different parts of the eye. If not caught early and treated, they can lead to vision loss and even blindness.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

AMD is a common eye disease among people aged 60 and older. It gradually destroys the macula, the part of the eye that provides sharp, central vision needed for seeing objects clearly. It comes in two forms: dry and wet. Each form requires different techniques to be used by eye care professionals to treat the condition.

Cataract

A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s lens and is common in older adults and people with diabetes. Vision loss by cataracts is successfully restored with surgery. Although cataract surgery is one of the most common procedures performed in the United States today, some people never need it. Many others are able to postpone it for years.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is the most common condition among people with diabetes. It damages the blood vessels in the retina, usually in both eyes. If you have early-stage retinopathy, your eye care professional may suggest controlling your blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol to prevent the disease from getting worse. For the more advanced stage, you may need laser surgery.

THE AGING EYE By Dr. Jane Therrien, Optometric Physician

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is not just one disease. It is a group of diseases that are all caused by the same event; fluid in the eye builds up and damages the optic nerve. Your eye care professional can help control glaucoma by prescribing eye drops or pills. Laser surgery is another way to open clogged areas so that the eye fluid drains and eases pressure against the optic nerve. Surgery is another option, but is used only when drops or laser surgery fails to control the pressure.

What is Low Vision?

People who have age-related eye disease are more likely to develop low vision. Low vision means that, even with regular glasses, contact lenses, medicine, and surgery, everyday tasks are difficult to do. Reading the mail, shopping, cooking, seeing the TV, and writing can seem challenging. Fortunately, help is available. Low vision specialists can offer a variety of services that help people make the most of their remaining vision. They cannot, however, restore lost vision.

As a result, people with low vision can continue enjoying friends, family, hobbies, and other interests just as they always have. The key is knowing there is help.

Get a Dilated Eye Exam.

If you are aged 50 or older, make a point of visiting your eye care professional annually. Having a dilated eye exam every year or as recommended by your eye care professional can help detect age-related eye diseases in their early stages. Early detection and treatment can help save your sight. So even if you are not experiencing vision problems, you should get an annual eye exam. This is one of the best things you can do to protect your sight.

■ LEGALLY SPEAKING

ESTATE PLANNING LESSONS

WE LEARNED FROM U.S. PRESIDENTS

F

By Andrea L. Jakob, Esq.

ebruary 19, 2024, is President’s Day. This is a great time to learn some lessons from our forefathers’ estate planning experiences.

George Washington: Lessons for a Blended Family

Washington, a highly respected figure, took notable care in organizing his affairs and planning for the future. At age twenty-six, Washington married Martha, a widow who had two children of her own. After his stepson John died, Martha and George raised his two youngest children as their own. Washington's blended family prompted him to draft a will that meticulously provided for each family member, ensuring their well-being after his passing. This highlights how by spending sufficient time and effort to think about and memorialize how we want to leave our possessions; we can leave a real legacy without a stressful mess.

Life is constantly changing–

Thomas Jefferson: Lessons for Business Owners

Jefferson, despite his great capabilities, had significant financial difficulties. His case demonstrates the challenges faced by families with cash-poor estates. His wealth was tied up and his family didn’t have the cash to settle the debts. Many families today face similar problems. Often when a business owner has significant wealth tied up in their business but little cash in reserve to settle debts, funds aren’t readily available to surviving family members. This can cause the families left behind to feel intense pressure to sell too quickly or at a large discount to pay creditors. Life insurance can be used to provide sufficient cash to resolve this issue. With the proper amount of life insurance, and by using estate planning tools such as irrevocable life insurance trusts, an individual can prevent a “land rich, cash poor” situation like that experienced by Jefferson’s family.

Abraham Lincoln: No Will

Lincoln, a lawyer, surprisingly died without a will or any other type of estate planning in place. His murder plunged his family into a nightmare as they attempted to settle his affairs without knowing where to start. This is called an “intestate estate” and the funds are divided according to state law, not necessarily what he would have wanted, during a prolonged court procedure called “probate” A key lesson is that no one knows when they will pass away. Even Abraham Lincoln was caught unprepared. Had Lincoln put some basic planning in place prior to his death, it could have eased his family’s burden.

n today's fast-paced world, emergencies can arise unexpectedly, highlighting the importance of possessing life-saving skills. Hands-Only CPR, a simplified form of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, stands out as a valuable, accessible technique that prioritizes chest compressions without mouth-to-mouth breaths, making it effective for individuals of all ages and backgrounds. Shocking statistics reveal that nearly 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of hospitals annually in the United States, emphasizing the critical need for widespread CPR knowledge. Rapid intervention can double or even triple survival chances, underscoring the pivotal role citizens can play in saving lives. Hands-Only CPR training, designed to be time-efficient and less than an hour, empowers communities to become proactive responders, transforming neighborhoods into safer, more resilient environments. The City of Weston, in collaboration with Broward Sheriff’s Fire Rescue, invites the public to learn Hands-Only CPR at Weston Community CPR Day on February 24, 2024. Pickleball, a game that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, has captured the hearts of many enthusiasts. The allure of this sport is undeniable, and it has become increasingly popular in Weston, Florida, and other areas around the state.

Conversion of Tennis and Basketball Courts

In response to the growing demand for pickleball, cities like Weston have proactively converted existing tennis and basketball courts into dedicated ones. Just swing by the Weston Regional Park and be ready to wait your turn. Also, new courts can be found at Bonaventure Town Center Club and within some of the gated neighborhoods. The adaptability of these spaces

Pickleball has become so common that even luxury real estate buyers seek properties with enough acreage to build private pickleball courts. This trend reflects the sport's growing popularity among affluent individuals who value the convenience and enjoyment of having a court in their backyard. As pickleball continues to capture the hearts and minds of South Floridians and enthusiasts around the country, it's clear that this trend isn't just a fad. With a strong sense of community and a commitment to an active lifestyle, pickleball is here to stay, making South Florida the ultimate paradise. Whether you're a seasoned player or a newcomer to the sport, there's no better place to enjoy a game of pickleball than in the Sunshine State. So, grab your paddle, head to your nearest court, and join the pickleball craze sweeping the nation!

Many other South Florida parks have also jumped on the pickleball bandwagon. Recognizing the demand for this sport, they have been constructing dedicated pickleball courts to accommodate players of all skill levels. These parks serve as gathering places for the community, promoting an active and healthy lifestyle for residents of all ages.

JOIN THE 34TH ANNUAL VCA WALK FOR THE ANIMALS

I

f you're a beach enthusiast and an animal lover, mark your calendar for the 34th Annual VCA Walk for the Animals. This major fundraiser takes place on Saturday, February 3, at the scenic Las Olas Intracoastal Promenade Park (80 Las Olas Cir) in Fort Lauderdale. Organized by the Humane Society of Broward County, the event plays a pivotal role in funding the care for countless homeless animals welcomed by the shelter each year. The Humane Society of Broward County offers an array of services and programs, including affordable vaccinations, educational initiatives, and efforts to prevent pet surrender. These are supported largely by the generosity of participants in the VCA Walk for the Animals. The day begins with registration at 7:30 am, followed by a morning filled with fun activities, interactive games, local vendor booths, and more. The highlight, an optional 1-mile stroll, kicks off at 9:00 am along the picturesque Fort Lauderdale Beach, concluding the event at noon. Participation is complimentary, and you can register as an individual or assemble a team by forming a Pack at Walk4theAnimals. com. The VCA Walk for the Animals is not only the Humane Society of Broward County’s most significant fundraising event but also a highlight of the year for many, including myself, as a member of the Humane Society of Broward County’s Planned Giving Committee and a regular attendee of the Walks. It's a joyous occasion, perfect for bringing along your dogs, friends, and family, combining support for a noble cause with the delight of a beachside promenade surrounded by cheerful dogs.

ARTHROSCOPY OF THE FOOT & ANKLE

F

By Dr. Carlo A. Messina

oot and ankle injuries are very common in sports or in general activities of daily living. Many structures including bone, ligament, cartilage, and joint lining may be injured. Injuries may occur from a single traumatic event or from overuse. Injuries may occur during the teenage years that may manifest themselves later on. These injuries may cause stiffness and pain in the foot or the ankle joints, especially after getting out of bed first thing in the morning to walk. This stiffness and pain will be present for a proportional period of time usually to the degree of joint injury. With weightbearing, the joint usually loosens and the person is able to ambulate. This stiffness and pain will redevelop if the person sits for a period of time and tries to get up and walk. As the day goes on, the foot or ankle may ache, especially with excessive activity. Swelling may be present over the area that is injured. Instability may develop if the ligaments have been injured causing the foot or ankle to constantly twist. When these injuries are unresponsive to conservative treatment which may include orthotics, medication or rehabilitation, arthroscopic surgery may be necessary to remove the damaged tissue in the foot and ankle. A m i n i a t u re camera is placed into the injured joint allowing an image to be seen on

56 / Our City Weston / February 2024 / OurCityMedia.com

a television screen. The joint is visualized, and small instruments are introduced into the joint to clean out and repair the damage. Fragments of bone and cartilage are often removed. Suctioning of debris and smoothing rough surfaces will often allow a joint to resume its normal gliding motion. Arthroscopic surgery may be used to treat chronic joint pain and swelling; arthritis and bone spurs; loose bone and cartilage fragments; stiff, scarred joints; and ankle fractures that have not completely recovered. The advantages of this treatment include faster recovery; less pain and swelling; avoids large incisions; low risk of infection; it is an outpatient procedure; and a quicker return to activities. Joints are designed to give our bodies freedom of movement. Wear and tear of a joint due to injury or due to aging may alter the lifestyle of an individual. When conservative treatments fail, arthroscopic surgery should be considered. The surgery is especially helpful for a fracture that has occurred to the ankle even after the ankle has been fixed surgically. The cartilage in the ankle joint may have been damaged during the injury causing chronic stiffness and pain that may be mild but never goes away completely. Patients often think that this is a very livable condition. However, once treated arthroscopically, a full return to activity may be possible.

HITTING THE BALL INTO THE WIND OR HITTING THE BALL DOWNWIND By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional

W

h e n hitting into a headwind, your shots carry shorter, fly higher and come down at a s teeper landing angle due to the extra lift and drag the headwind causes. Under calm conditions, the air is moving into the ball at the same speed the ball is traveling. When there is a tailwind, the wind speed subtracts from the airflow. When there is a headwind, the wind speed adds to the airflow. The greater the speed of the headwind, the more lift and drag is produced. The higher airflow into the ball causes more lift (what makes the ball rise) and more drag (what slows the ball down) causing the ball to balloon into the air. It’s a common misconception that the ball spins more when hit into the wind. It’s actually the added lift when hit into the airflow that gives this false impression. However, more spin is the enemy when hitting into the wind as more spin creates more lift and more drag and a resultant ballooning ball flight that winds up short of the target. Instead of swinging harder into the wind, usually resulting in more club head speed and more spin, use a club with less loft which will help you reduce the spin and optimize the flight of the ball into the wind. The opposite is true with a tailwind. If you hit a shot with too little spin when downwind, the ball will drop out of the sky too soon and fall short of the target. Remember, a tailwind will produce shots that carry longer, fly lower and roll more

once they land due to decrease amount of lift on the ball. Your best bet downwind is to launch the ball higher so that it will fly higher, carry longer and land more softly. The relationship between the lift and drag do not behave linearly, and that is why a headwind hurts more than a tailwind helps. Now that you know how the relationship between headwinds and tailwinds affects the golf ball, here is a general tip for calculating how many yards to add or subtract on a given shot. Throw up a few pieces of grass and pay attention to how far away from you the grass lands. For a tailwind, add two yards of extra distance to how far your shot will go for each yard that the wind blows the grass toward the target. For a headwind, subtract four yards of carry for each yard the wind blows the grass away from the target. This general rule with help you estimate which club to use when playing into a headwind or when playing downwind. Whenever I am on the course and feel a stiff wind in my face I automatically take two extra clubs. For example, from the 150 yard marker when it would be a 7 iron in distance, I would now select a 5 iron and make a nice easy smooth swing knowing that I have enough club selected and that my ball will bore through the heavy wind on target with just the right amount of distance. The same goes for when I am faced with the same distance and I have 150 yards to the green and a strong gusty wind is at my back. I take a 9 iron to compensate for the wind and the ball has a much higher trajectory, whereas the wind carries it right on target with the proper amount of distance as well.

What Causes Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease starts when bacteria form plaque on the teeth. Within days, minerals in the saliva bond with plaque to form tartar, a hard substance that adheres to the teeth. The bacteria work their way under the gums and cause gingivitis, which is an inflammation of the gums. Once under the gums, bacteria destroy the supporting tissue around the tooth, leading to tooth loss. Inflammation of the bone and tooth support structures is referred to as periodontitis. The combination of gingivitis and periodontitis is known as periodontal disease. Bacteria associated with dental disease can travel in the bloodstream to infect the heart, kidneys, and liver.

■ FROM THE STATEHOUSE

PROPERTY INSURANCE By State Representative Robin Bartleman

I

n the past couple of years, the state has set aside billions of dollars to provide a reinsurance assistance program to help insurance companies and hundreds of millions to fund the ‘My Safe Florida Home Program’, which helps residents through money grants to harden their homes. Most Floridians have seen little to no relief. Many of you, especially those on fixed incomes, cannot afford the rising property insurance costs and may have to decide what bills to pay, and some may even have to sell their homes. Floridians deserve reforms that put consumers first and put money back into the pockets of Floridians through subsidies, capping premiums, and increasing oversight. Many different bills will be filed this session.

I have filed House Bill 1055 – Property Insurance Rebate Program for Low-Income Seniors to help our seniors, many of whom live on social security. This bill would require the Department of Financial Services to create an insurance rebate program to provide low-income seniors relief from the rising property insurance costs. To be eligible for this program you must be 65 years or older with an income less than 200% of the federal poverty level. The program would provide a rebate equal to 10% of the person's premium on their primary residence only. Seniors who own condominiums will also be entitled to a rebate based on their proportionate payment contribution to association dues for property insurance coverage. This legislation will safeguard our most vulnerable citizens. My priority will

always be to fight for you. To receive updates on this bill and others, email Robin.Bartleman@myfloridahouse.gov to be added to my weekly newsletter. If you would like information on My Safe Florida Home Program go to: mysafeflhome.com

GREETINGS FROM YOUR

Chamber President!

A

By Patty Archer

s February unfolds in South Florida, our area experiences a notable shift, particularly in the tourism sector. With winter weather gripping much of the northern hemisphere, South Florida becomes a sought-after destination for sun-seekers and snowbirds, injecting vitality into the local economy. Understanding the nuances of this seasonal transformation can empower residents and businesses to navigate the opportunities and challenges that come with the influx of winter visitors. As residents, we play a crucial role in enhancing the local economy by supporting businesses and engaging in community events. This not only contributes to the vibrancy of the area but also reinforces a sense of community pride. While a rise in visitors may put a small strain on our infrastructure and services, adjusting commuting times or participating in community initiatives can contribute to a smoother seasonal experience. New visitors also give us an opportunity to show off! A Sip of Wine, A Taste of Heaven food & wine event, hosted by our parent chamber in Miramar Pembroke Pines, is sure to be another delicious extravaganza. Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 16th at the Miramar Amphitheater to savor the best restaurants, caterers and bakeries in Southwest Broward. This 18th annual event is sponsored by Memorial Hospital Miramar and the City of Miramar. Get your tickets today on Ticketmaster! By embracing a hospitality-centric approach, our businesses can not only capitalize on the seasonal influx but also establish themselves as hosts who prioritize guest satisfaction. This winter, the spotlight is on creating memorable and welcoming experiences that leave visitors eager to return and recommend southwest Broward as a top-tier destination when visiting South Florida. By making your business our business we remain engaged in the priorities of our businesses, community, and future generations of professionals (and visitors!) and their evolving needs. For more information and our event calendar, visit www. westonflchamber.com.
