Tiny Planet Preschool

Providing a World-Class Education

As a parent, you want the best for your child. That starts with selecting an early education program that will nurture your child while allowing him/her to explore, play and create in their first step to a lifetime love of learning. Tiny Planet Preschool is committed to providing the best educational experience possible for preschool students in a loving and caring environment. Its award-winning bilingual curriculum and culturally diverse enrollment prepares students for the future.

Tiny Planet General Manager Ivis Mateos answered some commonly asked questions about the preschool and daycare facility.

Describe the Tiny Planet Preschool.

Tiny Planet Preschool is a part of Graven International Group, Inc., an educational company with more than 34 years of experience and a winner of numerous International Awards of Excellence in education. Tiny Planet was established in the United States as an extension of the organization whose priority is to continue to spread its philosophy of modern education with traditional values.

What is Tiny Planet’s educational philosophy?

Tiny Planet believes in a multi-disciplinary approach to learning to promote a child who has strengths in all disciplines. Our bilingual curriculum enforces the importance of dual language education, and we are proud of being the Best of Weston winner (2016 through 2023) for Best Bilingual Preschool and Best Preschool overall in 2021.

Please explain your curriculum.

Our teachers and students benefit from

the use of a creative curriculum inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy. This allows the children to make their own inferences and the ability to explore their own outcomes.

Along with our cognitive Creative Curriculum, we have included our own HEART AND MIND section which focuses on teaching our children the importance of kindness, empathy, manners, and love, among other important areas we feel are necessary to provide a well-rounded education.

What differentiates Tiny Planet from other preschools?

At Tiny Planet, we offer our students and parents a variety of different enrichment programs such as swimming classes, Spanish, yoga, and many more sports enrichment classes. Our facility includes a swimming pool and full-functioning gymnasium.

Our school is also equipped with iMac’s, Apple Smart TV, as well as iPads in the classrooms which teachers use as educational tools and homework help for our afterschool program.

What is special about your staff?

Tiny Planet teachers are dedicated, passionate and, most importantly, focused on stimulating the strengths of each student. They are all bilingual professional educators that meet or exceed the criteria set by the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF). Every teacher is CPR and First Aid Certified with background checks cleared on both a local and national level.

What are the ages of the children you serve?

Our preschool serves children from

six weeks to five years of age. We offer an aftercare program for children ages six to eight years.

Please tell us more about your aftercare program.

Tiny Planet provides transportation from local elementary schools, along with tutoring and homework help. Students in our aftercare program follow a curriculum filled with fun activities. They can also use the computers and iPads for homework and to access educational sites necessary for success in school.

Why should a parent consider Tiny Planet?

Since you entrust your most precious gifts to us, which are your children, we commit to molding them into happy, well- rounded boys and girls.

▸ Tiny Planet Preschool is located at 16098 W. State Road 84. It is open from 7am to 6pm. For more information visit www.tinyplanet.edu or call 954-384-4884.

Celebrating Women’s Enduring Legacy

As we celebrate Women’s History Month this March, we must recognize and honor the contributions of women who have significantly impacted our community, our country, and the world. From political leaders to activists, artists, and entrepreneurs, women have played a crucial role in shaping our society and paving the way for future generations.

In Broward County, we are fortunate to have a rich history of women who have made a difference in a variety of fields. For example, Marjory Stoneman Douglas, an environmentalist and journalist, fought to protect the Everglades and raise awareness about the importance of conservation. Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune was a local civil rights leader who founded a school for African American girls and later served as an advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

In addition to these trailblazers, countless women in our community make a difference daily. From teachers and healthcare workers to small business owners and volunteers, women play a vital role in every aspect of our society. This month, we want to celebrate their achievements and recognize the challenges they have overcome to get to where they are today.

Check out the Exceptional Women of Broward section of this month’s magazine. We profile some of the community’s extraordinary women who are impacting the lives of people in our community daily.

Of course, there is still much work to be done to achieve gender equality and ensure that all women have access to the same opportunities and resources. But by acknowledging the contributions of women in our community and beyond, we can inspire future generations of girls and women to pursue their goals and dreams.

Here’s to building a brighter, more inclusive future for all!

Cypress Bay Principal Named Principal of the Year

The red carpet rolled out tonight as Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) celebrated its brightest stars at the annual Caliber Awards Ceremony. Held at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center, the event transformed into a night of Hollywood glamour, recognizing the exceptional leadership and dedication of over 550 nominees, 34 semifinalists and 16 extraordinar y finalists.

More than 1,100 guests in attendance and thousands more participating virtually cheered the nominees as they walked across the stage. The evening culminated with the highly anticipated announcement of the 2024 Caliber Award winners, each one a shining example of educational excellence.

Cypress Bay Cypress Bay High School Principal Kassandra Fried took home top honors as Principal of the Year! She joined the District 21 years ago as a French teacher. Fried believes every student should have access to a comprehensive, inclusive and empowering education.

“Creating an inclusive environment is vital to ensuring that every student has access to educational opportunities. My priority as principal is to advocate for a student-centered approach that focuses on meeting the needs and strengths of each student,” Fried said. “I strongly believe in nurturing a well-rounded education that goes beyond academics and encompasses the emotional and ethical aspects of each student’s growth.”

“Ms. Fried is an instructional leader and mentor, who understands the value of professional and personal relations. She has created an exceptional learning environment for both students and staff,” Director Teresa Hall said. “To achieve this goal, she builds relationships with teachers, staff, students and community stakeholders based on trust.”

JOIN THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER: RELAY FOR LIFE

More than just a walk, the American Cancer Society Relay For Life brings together passionate supporters who embody the American Cancer Society vision to end cancer as we know it, for everyone. This volunteer-led experience unites communities to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer, and raise funds to improve the lives of people with cancer and their families through advocacy, research, and patient support, to ensure everyone has an opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and sur vive cancer.

The local installment of the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Relay For Life will take place at Cooper City High School on March 16th, 3:00 pm - 10:00 pm. It is open to everyone in the community. Relay For Life is a movement that unites survivors, caregivers, volunteers, and participants in the belief that the future can be cancer-free. With 2.5 million participants worldwide, it is the largest peer-to-peer fundraising event.

At Relay For Life events, individuals facing cancer are not alone. Each year, over 2,500 Relay events take place nationwide to support

and celebrate survivors and caregivers. These events offer special activities throughout the year, allowing survivors and caregivers to connect with others and access a strong support system.

No donation is too small. Each and every dollar counts. Donations help fund groundbreaking cancer research, patient care programs, and can make a difference in communities like ours. With every donation, you are helping the American Cancer Society save lives.

The "Broward Power" relay's fundraising goal for this year is $135,000. These funds are utilized to support cancer research, fund education programs, and provide services to cancer patients and their families.

The American Cancer Society's mission is more important than ever, as the needs of people facing cancer continue despite the ongoing crisis. Funds raised through Relay For Life help to sustain the Society's efforts in cancer research, providing a 24/7 helpline, and ensuring patients receive the care and support they need.

ROTARY CLUB OF WESTON’S 37TH ANNUAL CHARITY GOLF CLASSIC PROVIDING SCHOLARSHIPS TO LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN NEED

ROTARY CLUB OF WESTON FHV Legal Golf Tournament, being held on April 15 at The Club at Weston Hills.

The Rotary Club of Weston’s Scholarship Fund was established 36 years ago to assist local students in achieving their dreams of attending college or vocational school. On Monday, April 15th the group will hold its 37th Tournament at the prestigious Club at Weston Hills. Over 200 golfers are anticipated to tee off, enjoying a day of camaraderie, food, drink and a silent auction, while helping deserving kids from the community. With an expectation of raising a quarter of a million dollars this year, the funds will be distributed at a Scholarship Breakfast on May 30, where students who exhibited academic leadership, community service commitment, and a verified financial need, will learn of their award.

“We are only able to provide scholarships to students in need because of the generous donations and support of our sponsors, including Freedland Harwin Valori and Gander, the Golf Title Sponsor for over 10 years, major sponsors like Moises and Fauzia Jaffer Foundation, Jim & Donna Inglis, Gillman Homes, City National Bank, Bank On It, Acuderm, Huntington Learning Centers, Hooters, Great Waste and Aden Perry Good Samaritan Foundation,” said Steve Goldstein, Scholarship Chair. “It is only because of the generosity of these businesses and individuals and the financial support from members of our Rotary Club of Weston, that we are able to continue to help deserving students with an opportunity to achieve their dreams of higher education. This is a real Community Effort!”

To apply for a scholarship, students from Cypress Bay, Western, HANDY and Children’s Harbor must complete a detailed application that includes scholastic achievement, community service hours, extra-curricular activities, proof of financial need, and reference letters from teachers and administrators.

These students are interviewed by members of the Scholarship Committee, who evaluate them using objective criteria and finally, make scholarship award determinations. Not only must the students demonstrate financial need, but also demonstrate qualities of character, reflecting Rotary’s motto “Service Above Self”.

FREE POPS CONCERT BY THE SOUTH FLORIDA SYMPHONY

The South Florida Symphony makes its return to Weston on Saturday, March 16, 2024, from 6:30 pm - 7:45 pm. Presented by the City of Weston and the Weston Music Society, in cooperation with the Arts Council of Greater Weston, this beloved Pops Concert is a community favorite.

Special Events Manager for the City of Weston Annalisa Walker said, “The Outdoor Pops Concert has grown in popularity over the years, and we are excited to once again plan and host this event in the City of Weston. We look forward to seeing the community come out and enjoy the diverse music presented by South Florida Symphony.

Due to scheduled construction in Weston Town Center, the concert has found a new venue. The event will take place at the Weston Town Center Park Amphitheater near the Cigar Bar in the Town Center. The park features a bandshell and offers some provided seating. Feel free to bring your own chairs; there's ample space for everyone to enjoy the music and move to the rhythm.

Under the baton of Maestra Sebrina Maria Alfonso, the full orchestra and spectacular vocalists perform a mix of Pops favorites including a tribute to legendary crooner Tony

Bennett, iconic themes from blockbusters “Star Wars” and “Mission Impossible”, music from your favorite video games, and much more!

Diane Marett and Toby Feuer, Co-Vice Presidents of Events for the WMS, are delighted with this opportunity for our students. “In the elementary schools, we do In-School programs introducing the instruments of the orchestra. In Middle Schools and High Schools, we support the bands, choruses and drama departments. This gives them a free chance to see a full orchestra and vocalists in performance right here in Weston.

Olaf from “Frozen” will be on hand to greet the children – and their parents and grandparents. Everybody loves Olaf – just as everybody will love this wonderful free concert!

Lou Marett, President of the WMS, said “A pops concert is the perfect way to fulfill 2 pillars of our mission –bringing fine music to Weston and ongoing education for our children to the joys music

brings. We also give scholarships to high school graduates continuing their music education in college. We constantly look for opportunities for our talented student musicians to perform, the latest being ‘Saturdays on Main Street”. We have one coming up on March 2 from 5:00 pm-8:00 pm featuring the Sagemont Synergy Rock Band. Check us out at www.westonmusicsociety.org.”

A SOLDIERS TALE An Evening with October 7 Survivor Yadin Gellman

Yadin Gellman's journey from the historic streets of Jerusalem to the front lines of Israel's elite Sayeret Matkal unit is a testament to resilience and bravery. Growing up during the tumultuous times of the second Intifada, Gellman's early experiences shaped his path toward becoming a combat soldier, dedicated to defending his country in its most crit ical times.

His valor was notably displayed during the harrowing events of the Hamas massacre on Simchas Torah in 2023, where he stood in the face of terror, engaging in fierce combat to protect his fellow citizens.

After a decade of serving and facing near-death experiences, Gellman transitioned from soldier to storyteller, embarking on a new mission to share his riveting narrative.

His acting career, a stark contrast to his life in the military, serves as a platform for him to express and process his experiences,

reaching out to others through the power of storytelling.

The Chabad of Weston is honored to host Yadin Gellman for a profound evening of reflection and insight. Scheduled for Tuesday, March 5, 2024, at 7:30 PM, this event presents a unique opportunity for the community and the public at large to engage with Gellman's compelling story firsthand. Set to take place at 18501 Tequesta Trace Park Lane in Weston, attendees are invited to delve into the realities of conflict, survival, and the indomitable human spirit.

Tickets are priced at $20, offering a chance to witness the extraordinary journey of a man who has lived through some of the most challenging and defining moments of our time.

ALL ARE WELCOME TO WESTON FRIENDS EVENTS IN MARCH

Moving to a new place can be a bit overwhelming, especially making new friends and connections. In 1994 Weston Newcomers Club was formed to serve as a welcome wagon to help newcomers become acclimated to the area and meet others with similar interests. The Club grew, and several years later, the name was changed to Weston Friends Club.

The Weston Friends Club hosts a variety of games ranging from book clubs, card

games [varieties of Canasta, Bridge, etc.], Bunko, Mah Jongg, and pot luck brunches at a member’s home. Other monthly activities include a Lunch Bunch, Ladies' Night Out, and Foreign Film viewing. Weston Friends Club organizes trips to museums, local theater performances, and Potluck Cocktail Parties [spouses invited] at members homes.

“In 1994, Weston was still in its infancy, with new residents constantly relocating here. Residents wanted to make new friends engage in various activities as singles or

couples, and Weston Newcomers filled those needs,” explains Russo. “Weston Friends Club continues to be somewhat of a newcomers club, but also draws members who have been long-time residents. Many new members join after retirement or becoming empty nesters.”

This month Weston Friends will be hosting three events

Saturday, March 16 - Join Weston Friends Club members to see “Deathtrap” by Ira Levin at Pembroke Pines Theater of the Performing Arts for a 2 pm matinee performance.

March 18, Monday, Bunco Afternoon – enjoy playing this easy to learn fun game the third Monday of every month at 1pm.

April 18-22 - 4 night Celebrity Cruise with stops in Key West and Nassau.

▸ For more information about these events or about Weston Friends Club, contact Nancy Russo at 954-385-1445 or email her at narusso42@gmail.com.

BPRESCHOOL INCIDENTS

iting is a common behavior among children birth to three-years-old. Developmentally, most toddlers don’t have enough words to express how they are feeling. According to The Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning at Vanderbilt University, children primarily rely on sounds and actions to communicate what they are thinking and feeling. The good news is that they usually grow out of the biting stage by the age of 3 or 4.

At a preschool setting, every effort will be made to determine the reasoning or the function behind the biting behavior so that we can try to figure out what teachers and parents can do to teach the child more appropriate responses than biting.

When biting occurs, teachers will record incidents and document observations to better understand the context before and after a bite (where, when, how, who), as well as noting when the behavior is absent.

Teachers will also note the location and availability of staff during the incident to ensure proper supervision is taking place. As staff members are working to better understand why the child is doing the behavior, they will work to be proactive in striving to prevent future incidents.

Children bite for many different reasons. Some of the reasons include but are not limited to, exploration, teething, investigating cause and effect, attention, frustration in expressing needs or wants, becoming independent, learning to play with other children, anxiety, or feeling threatened by a new or changing situation.

When a child bites another child, staff will:

• Intervene immediately.

• Help the child who was bitten by showing concern and support.

• Work to teach the child with the challenging behavior in a caring and firm way that the behavior is not acceptable as well as alternate behaviors that are acceptable.

• Reinforce positive behaviors.

The school will provide a confidential accident report to the parents of the bitten child, while a confidential incident report will be provided to the parents of the biter. These forms assist in documenting and identifying patterns so that staff can work to prevent future incidents by changing the environment and implementing intentional teaching strategies (social-emotional supports).

If the biting continues the school will then request to meet with the parents of the child who is biting to plan strategies for supporting children in positive social behaviors. On the very rare occasion that the biting continues without improvement, the school reserves the right to ask the parents to seek professional help to help identify a core issue if any seems present.

An important thing to remember is to always be conscious with discipline and do not label your child as bitter. Work together with your teachers and school administrators to find the tools necessary to change your child's behavior and soon you will see that this too shall pass.

Pioneering a Path From the Lazy B to the Supreme Court

Agirl named Sandra was born in 1930 and grew up on a vast cattle ranch on the ArizonaNew Mexico border called the Lazy B Ranch. Growing up in a sparsely populated area meant Sandra didn’t attend a traditional school

as a young child. Her mother provided all of her early childhood education. Like her brother Allen, Sandra developed a strong work ethic at a very young age while working on the ranch.

The young girl was quite precocious. By the time she was ten, Sandra had read just about every book on the ranch. Her parents decided to send her to live with her grandmother in El Paso to attend the Radford School for Girls. Sandra’s work ethic and passion for learning helped her excel and gain admission to Standford University. The young woman graduated with honors and decided to stay at Stanford for law school. She graduated from Law School at the top of her

class in 1952.

Despite her academic achievements, Sandra faced significant barriers to employment in the legal profession solely because of her gender. Many law firms were reluctant to hire women as lawyers at the time. Her first job after law school was as a deputy county attorney in San Mateo, California, a position she obtained only after initially offering to work without pay to prove her capabilities.

After marrying a Stanford classmate, Sandra moved to Arizona, where her career took off. She worked as an assistant attorney general before pursuing politics in the Arizona state senate, where she became the first woman to hold the position

of Majority Leader in any state senate.

On July 7, 1981, Ronald Reagan appointed Sandra Day O’Connor as the first woman on the United States Supreme Court. Justice O’Connor often relied on her unique upbringing when deciding cases. Her judicial philosophy was not easily classified along the conventional conservative-liberal spectrum. She was frequently the Justice who found the moderate “middle” on many controversial issues.

Sandra Day O’Connor died in December 2023. We lost a pioneering woman who blazed a trail that so many now follow. Her ashes are buried on a peaceful hilltop at the Lazy B Ranch where she grew up.

EMPOWERING SUCCESS: STRATEGIES FOR A SMOOTH TRANSITION FROM MIDDLE SCHOOL TO HIGH SCHOOL

Embarking on the journey from middle school to high school is a pivotal moment in the academic life of American students and English language learners (ELLs, ESOL, ESL Students). This transition, while brimming with excitement, can also be a source of stress. Navigating this shift successfully involves understanding key factors and being prepared for the challenges that lie ahead. Awareness is pivotal in shaping students' success in high school and influencing decisions about their post-high school life.

High school, with its diverse offerings and unique dynamics, presents a new set of expectations and opportunities. Elective classes become a crucial aspect, allowing students to delve into subjects of personal interest alongside their mandatory courses. Some schools introduce honors classes in high school, paving the way for college preparation and emphasizing the importance of maintaining a commendable GPA from the very beginning.

The transition also brings about a shift in the academic landscape, emphasizing the significance of high school grades for future college admissions. Engaging in extracurricular activities becomes an avenue for students to discover their passions, and the larger class sizes in high school add a new dimension to the learning environment.

To prepare for this transition and mitigate potential stress, students, parents, and educators can follow these recommendations:

Prepare a Plan: Develop a comprehensive plan outlining academic and personal goals. English language learners should assess their language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, seeking support and transparent communication with parents and educators.

Extracurricular Exploration: Encourage students to explore their passions through extracurricular activities and decide on clubs that align with their interests.

Learn Time Management: Establishing routines and learning time management is crucial. Parents can assist in creating a weekly

schedule, fostering a valuable skill for future academic and professional endeavors.

Establish Studying Skills: Recognize and cultivate effective studying skills tailored to individual learning styles. Special attention and reinforcement may be needed for English language learners to meet high school standards.

Practice Self-Care: Mental health should be a priority. Encourage students to take breaks, breathe, and practice self-care. Transitioning to high school is a gradual process, and developing healthy habits and skills takes time.

In conclusion, these guidelines aim to empower families and students to take control of the transition from middle to high school. Dr. Katya Pizarro, the Founder and President of Elite Language Academy (ELA), emphasizes the significance of high school years, underscoring their impact on future college plans. Elite Language Academy offers assistance in navigating the high school transition and exploring Academic English courses, with a mission to help all students achieve their goals and dreams.

DRY EYE A COMMON BUT OVERLOOKED CONDITION

Dry eye is a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide. Despite its high prevalence, it is often overlooked and misunderstood. Dry eye is a condition where the eyes don’t produce enough tears to keep them moist, leading to discomfort, blurred vision, and even vision loss. It can be caused by many factors, including age, medications, hormonal changes, and environmental factors such as wind, smoke, and air conditioning.

Dry eye is often mistaken for other eye conditions, such as allergies or conjunctivitis. It is important to seek the advice of a qualified eye doctor to determine the root cause of dry eye.

They may perform a simple test, called a tear film breakup time, to measure the stability of the tear film and determine the severity of the dry eye.

The treatment of dry eye varies, depending on the cause and severity of the condition. Lifestyle changes, such as reducing exposure to wind and smoke and increasing water intake, can be helpful in relieving symptoms. Artificial tears, ointments, and gels can be used to soothe and moisturize the eyes. Some people may benefit from lid hygiene, such as regular cleaning of the eyelids, to reduce the amount of bacteria that can cause inflammation.

In severe cases of dry eye, medications may be required to improve tear production. These medications, known as tear stimulants, work by increasing the production of natural tears. In some cases, punctal plugs may be recommended to slow down the drainage of tears from the eyes, helping to keep the

eyes moist for longer periods of time.

While dry eye is a common condition, it is important to seek treatment to prevent the worsening of symptoms. Prolonged dry eye can lead to further complications, such as corneal ulcers, scarring, and even vision loss. With early detection and appropriate treatment, dry eye can be managed effectively and prevent further harm to the eyes.

In conclusion, dry eye is a common but often overlooked condition that affects millions of people worldwide. With proper treatment, it can be managed effectively to prevent further harm to the eyes. If you are experiencing symptoms of dry eye, it is important to seek the advice of a qualified eye doctor to determine the root cause and appropriate treatment. With proper care, you can enjoy comfortable, healthy eyes for years to come.

CAN I DISINHERIT MY SPOUSE?

Believe it or not, it isn’t easy to disinherit your spouse. You can't cut your spouse out of your estate unless they agree in a Prenuptial or Postnuptial Agreement. Even if your will says otherwise, Florida's "elective share laws" ensure that surviving spouses have rights to inherit.

In fact, Florida's elective share law prevents surviving spouses from being denied a share of a revocable trust, probate estate or other property. This law entitles a surviving spouse to a portion of the deceased spouse's estate, regardless of what the will says. Surviving spouses can override the Will's terms to potentially receive 30% of the estate.

What if I am newly married? If you marry after making a will and your new spouse lives longer than you do, according to Florida law, the survivor receives the 30% elective share. Exceptions include prenuptial or postnuptial agreements, provisions in the will providing for the spouse, or a clear intention in the will not to provide for the spouse.

But what about my home? The Florida Constitution and Statutes give a surviving spouse the right to your home that overrules the terms of a will or trust.

I like to tell my clients a story that takes place in the early 1900s when women weren’t allowed to own real property. Their spouse would go to the local saloon to win back his poker losses, and the only thing left to throw in the pot was their homestead deed. The wife and children would then be left homeless. Therefore, the Florida Constitution enacted a specific provision which provides for extra special homestead protection.

Prenuptial Agreements to the Rescue

A prenuptial agreement can be very useful in such a situation. A prenuptial agreement is essentially a contract between two individuals preparing to marry that details how property will be owned throughout the marriage and what rights each spouse has to the property of the other. The agreement specifies the nature and extent of the property that each spouse is bringing into the marriage as well as how that property will be divided if the couple ever divorces or one spouse dies during the marriage. The agreement can outline the extent to which a spouse has the right to give their property to their children from a different relationship or to charities or other beneficiaries through estate planning. It also allows each spouse to waive certain rights to the property of the other spouse, such as elective share rights.

Spring Into Safety: A Guide to Securing Your Home & Protecting Your Loved Ones

As we approach the spring season and prepare to spring forward for Daylight Savings Time, it is important to take some time to ensure our homes are safe and secure. Spending just an hour to review your home safety checklist can go a long way in protecting your loved ones and property. Here's a rundown of essential safety measures to consider:

First and foremost, let's talk about Smoke Alarms. The U.S. Fire Administration reports that most fires occur in residential settings. Shockingly, three out of five home fire deaths happen in homes without functional smoke alarms. Ensure you have smoke alarms installed in every bedroom and common area on each level of your home. It is vital to test the batteries in your smoke alarms monthly and replace them at least once a year. If you're a Weston resident needing assistance with battery replacement, reach out to the Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Department in Weston at 954-389-2090 for support.

Next up, Carbon Monoxide Detectors. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer, being both colorless and odorless. Install carbon monoxide detectors in central locations and on every floor of your home. Just like smoke alarms, test the batteries in your carbon monoxide detectors monthly and replace them annually.

Thirdly, take time to review your Family Emergency Plan. This encompasses your home fire safety plan, first aid supplies, and emergency house file. Ensure your fire safety plan includes at least two exit routes from each room and a designated family meeting point outside in case of a fire emergency. Regularly practice fire drills with your family to reinforce the plan. Check your first aid kits for necessary supplies and consider assembling an emergency house file containing important documents like insurance policies, wills, and medical directives for easy access during emergencies. For additional information on how to create your family’s fire safety plan, please contact the BSO Fire Departments Public Educator in Weston at 954-991-3501.

Lastly, spring cleaning isn't just for tidying up your home; it is also an opportunity to declutter your medicine cabinet. Safely dispose of expired or unwanted medications by participating in Broward Sheriff’s Office Operation Medicine Cabinet (OMC) events. Additionally, if you have old personal documents such as financial statements or receipts that need shredding, take advantage of Shred-AThon events. Both services are free and open to Broward County residents. Please refer to www.sheriff.org for upcoming dates and location sites near you.

By taking the time to address these safety measures, you can ensure a safer and more secure home environment for you and your family this spring season.

REVOLUTIONIZING REAL ESTATE:

HOW AI ENHANCES EFFICIENCY & INNOVATION WHILE THE EXPERTISE OF PROFESSIONALS REMAINS ESSENTIAL

Enhancing the real estate industry with Artificial Intelligence (AI) has revolutionized property buying and selling, making processes more efficient and innovative. AI's emergence in real estate has introduced virtual tours, enabling potential buyers to explore properties remotely, yet the invaluable insights and personal touch of traditional real estate agents continue to play a crucial role. This article delves into the advantages and drawbacks of leveraging AI versus consulting real estate experts.

AI solutions have made property exploration more accessible, allowing buyers to virtually visit multiple

properties worldwide without the time and expense of physical tours. These technologies can sift through extensive data to highlight market trends, property values, and lucrative investment openings, streamlining and enriching the decision-making journey.

Moreover, AI-powered tools and conversational agents deliver 24/7 assistance, addressing inquiries and furnishing information, elevating customer service experience.

Nonetheless, AI lacks the nuanced personal interaction and comprehension that real estate professionals excel in. Agents provide customized counsel, grasping client desires and specifications in ways technology falls short. Excessive reliance on technology might overlook the essence of a property's locale, surroundings, or other subtle yet impactful factors.

The value of a seasoned real estate agent is unparalleled. They bring deep

insights into local market dynamics, legalities, and trends not fully captured by AI, proving indispensable in negotiations and strategic decision-making. Agents' vast networks and rapport can uncover exclusive deals, including yet-to-be-listed properties, leveraging their negotiation prowess to finalize transactions, manage paperwork, and ensure mutual satisfaction.

While AI introduces cutting-edge conveniences that boost real estate transaction efficiency and accessibility, the expertise of a real estate professional is irreplaceable. A synergistic approach, merging technology with human insight, offers the most effective strategy, addressing the varied needs of buyers and sellers in today's market. The focus should be on how each element can complement and refine the overall real estate experience, rather than viewing it as a choice between one or the other.

HEEL PAIN IN CHILDREN

Does your son or daughter complain of heel pain daily, especially during or after activity?

Do they remember any traumatic event or did the pain just occur? If this sounds like your child, there is a high probability that they have Calcaneal Apophysitis (or Sever’s Disease). This is actually a condition and not a disease. This occurs when the growth plate (apophysis) located at the bottom and back of the heel (the portion of the bone that allows growth) becomes painfully inflamed. Although plantar fasciitis (inflammation of the ligament that supports the arch) is the most common cause of heel pain in adults, it is extremely uncommon in children.

Cause:

▸ Growth plate inflammation on the back and the bottom of the heel

▸ Over-activity in children commonly between the ages of 8 and 14

▸ Tight muscles in the lower extremity, especially the calf muscle

▸ Flatfeet

▸ Poor shoe gear or walking barefoot

▸ Growth spurts

Symptoms:

▸ Discomfort in the heel bone at the end of activity

▸ Occasionally painful to the Achilles and ankle

▸ Stiffness in the foot in the morning and pain with walking or running

▸ Pain alleviated by rest and a decrease in activity

▸ Pain is usually present during or after a child is done with the activity, sits for a period of time, and then tries to get up and walk

Signs:

▸ Tenderness to the back and bottom of the heel with touch or grasping the heel

▸ Walking on the ball of the foot to avoid touching the heel to the ground

▸ Discoloration and swelling are almost never seen in the heel

▸ Limping at the end of an activity that may persist as the condition worsens

Treatment:

▸ Modification of activity and avoiding going barefoot

▸ Rest and ice

▸ Stretching exercises

▸ Proper shoe gear and heel lifts to decrease tension on the heel

▸ Night splinting to stretch the tight calf muscle and arch ligament

▸ Taping the foot to decrease the pulling of the plantar fascia on the heel bone

▸ Custom molded orthotics to support the foot and help restore proper alignment

▸ Occasional immobilization in a boot or cast to completely rest the heel and allow healing

▸ Physical therapy to improve flexibility and diminish inflammation of the growth plate.

How to Grip a Golf Club Correctly

The golf grip is often overlooked when trying to cure a slice or any other problem with a shot for that matter. Knowing the correct way to grip a golf club could help you see an end to your hooks and slices and have you on your way to a lower handicap.

One thing I often see when people have problems with their grip is they tend to hold it too much in their palm. Gripping the golf club too much in the palm leads to a loss of wrist action, which is a great source of power. Limiting the wrist action will lead to a loss of power and feel in the golf club. The fingers are the most sensitive parts of our hands. Placing the golf club more in the fingers than the palms results in an increased amount of wrist hinge, which means longer tee shots and more feel.

You don’t have to grip it hard to hit it hard! So many times, I see people choking their clubs to death to try and hit it longer. In actual fact gripping the club this hard can seriously decrease the distance you get on your shots.

The Vardon grip is a popular way of holding the golf club and it is seen as a proper golf grip for distance. Many pros use this grip today, but it was made popular by a golfer known as Harry Vardon way back at the turn of the 20th century. This golf grip is taught by many professional golf instructors to beginners, and it’s ideal for getting players to grip the club in their fingers rather than their palms.

To use the Vardon grip, all you do is overlap the pinky of your trailing hand (in a right-handed golfer’s case, the right hand is the trailing hand) and place it between the middle and index finger of the lead hand (which is the left for a right-handed golfer). The lead hand thumb should fit in the lifeline of the trailing hand. This works especially well for players with large hands.

Make sure that when looking down at address, you can see the first two knuckles of your left hand and a “V” formed between the thumb and forefinger pointing toward your right shoulder. With the right hand, have the “V” pointing toward your chin or slightly to the right shoulder. Trust me, this works!

This Interlock grip literally locks the hands together, but the golfer also runs the risk of having the handle stray into the palms of the hands. People with medium sized hands, weak forearms and wrists, and beginners in many cases prefer this style of grip.

To apply the interlocking grip, you start off by taking the little finger on the trailing hand (the trailing hand is the right hand for right handed golfers) and intertwine it with the index finger on the lead hand. The lead hand’s thumb should fit perfectly into the lifeline of the trailing hand.

In every sport, physical strength and conditioning are important to succeed. Golf is no different. Strong forearms and wrists are essential for golf success and they play a huge part in developing a proper golf grip.

Examination And Rabies Vaccine

Regular examinations are essential to maintaining your pet’s health.

A thorough physical examination checks every major body system.

Periodic vaccine risk assessments help ensure that your pet is properly immunized against infectious diseases.

Rabies is a deadly disease that is generally fatal in all species. Vaccination against rabies is required by law in most states.

Why Are Annual Examinations Important?

Regular physical examinations are essential to maintaining your pet’s health. A thorough examination checks every major body organ and system.

• Eyes—The eyes will be checked for redness, cloudiness, or discharge.

• Ears—Many pets suffer from ear infections. Your veterinarian will examine your pet’s ear canals for possible signs of an ear problem: debris, waxy buildup, or trauma caused by scratching.

• Mouth—Your veterinarian will look in your pet’s mouth for signs of dental disease and

for broken or missing teeth. If he or she sees any problems, your veterinarian may recommend a thorough dental examination and cleaning for your pet.

• Respiratory system—Your veterinarian will listen to your pet’s heart and lungs.

• Digestive system—Your veterinarian will “palpate” (feel) your pet’s abdomen for signs of discomfort and to check that the major organs are the right size and shape.

• Musculoskeletal system—Your veterinarian will palpate all your pet’s major muscles and bones to check for signs of weakness or pain.

• Skin and hair coat—Your veterinarian will check of all your pet’s “lumps and bumps.” If anything suspicious is found, a biopsy or lump removal may be recommended.

• Laboratory tests—During a routine examination, your veterinarian may also want to take samples of your pet’s blood, urine, and feces to obtain additional information about your pet’s health or to ensure that specific body systems are functioning properly.

During your pet’s examination, your veterinarian will also ask you many questions about your pet’s behavior, lifestyle, and health history since your last visit. The answers to these questions will help your veterinarian determine what preventive care recommendations he or she should make in order to help keep your pet healthy. Based on your pet’s age, lifestyle, and disease risk, your veterinarian will recommend vaccinations for your pet. In virtually every state, vaccination against rabies is required by law.

What Is Rabies?

Rabies is a deadly disease caused by a virus that attacks the central nervous system. All warm-blooded animals, including wild animals, dogs, cats, and humans, can get rabies. Once clinical signs appear, rabies is generally fatal. However, the disease is also generally preventable through vaccination.

Rabies remains prevalent in wildlife populations—primarily raccoons, bats, foxes, and skunks. Pets are at risk of contracting the disease from wild animals and potentially transmitting it to humans.

The virus can have an incubation period lasting from days to months. Rabies is usually transmitted through contact with the saliva of an infected animal; most pets and people

become infected through a bite wound. An animal’s saliva becomes infective once the virus has traveled through the animal’s nervous system from the initial bite site to reach the brain and, ultimately, the salivary glands. Once the virus enters the salivary glands, the animal can pass the infection to other animals or humans through its saliva. Animals with rabies are referred to as rabid.

Prevention

Because of the potentially serious human health implications, rabies vaccination of dogs is required by law in virtually all states, and many states also require cats to be vaccinated. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent the disease in animals and, in doing so, to safeguard human health. Today’s rabies vaccines are very safe and effective.

Other forms of rabies prevention include:

• Keeping your pet away from wildlife.

• Ensuring that all other dogs or cats your pet comes in contact with are vaccinated.

• Minimizing contact with stray animals. Do not feed stray animals with unknown vaccination status or allow them to remain near your home and pets.

Vaccination helps protect your pet from unnecessary euthanasia or extended quarantine if he or she has contact with a rabies animal.

Developmental Disabilities Awareness

MARCH UPDATE

could not find an aftercare provider for him, impacting her ability to work.

Month in March highlights the diverse experiences of individuals with developmental disabilities. It fosters celebration of their accomplishments, advocacy for their rights, and the promotion of understanding and inclusivity in society. Examples of developmental disabilities encompass autism, behavior disorders, brain injury, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, fetal alcohol syndrome, intellectual disabilities, and spina bifida.

During the summer, I met with Trenae and her son Logan, who has unique abilities. Trenae encountered difficulties finding an Early Learning Coalition (ELC) preschool provider for Logan. Six different preschools asked him to leave. Upon placement in a public-school preschool program, she faced a new hurdle: she

My conversation with Trenae prompted dialogue with the Broward Early Learning Coalition and other child advocacy groups. The prevalence of early learners with developmental delays and/or behavior issues has become more prevalent, and students are bumped from one program to the next, disjoining their educational experience. These children face an alarmingly high expulsion rate—more than 3x that of K–12 combined. This bill incentivizes early learning and after-school providers to accommodate students with special needs and equips teachers with the training necessary to work with these students so they can maintain a classroom conducive to all learners.

In addition, the School Readiness Program's special needs eligibility only covers children aged 3–4. This bill

expands eligibility to include infants, toddlers, and school-age children who need after-school programming.

This bill incentivizes early learning and after-school providers to accommodate students with special needs. The bill addresses the challenges faced by families of children with special needs by enhancing their access to programs and providing teachers with the necessary skills to ensure better educational outcomes for all children.
