REAL ESTATE GROUP

Makes Luxury Lifestyle-Living a Reality A resource for your retirement.

I

ntroducing dluxuss Real Estate Group, a boutique real estate firm within the renowned Coldwell Banker brand, specializing in luxury residential, commercial, and investment properties. Founder and team leader Denice Landaeta, together with her skilled associates, bring diverse professional backgrounds to provide clients with a premier real estate experience. Denice shares insights about dluxuss and its services for both buyers and sellers. dluxuss Real Estate Group excels in seller representation, ensuring properties sell for their highest value. This year, we've achieved the highest price per square foot in the City of Weston, at $565 per sqft, a milestone we take great pride in.

Our goal is to be your go-to resource for retirement planning. We’ve observed that some sellers neglect to prepare their homes for sale, resulting in prolonged market listings. These properties are often crucial to their owners' retirement plans. In any market, we dedicate ourselves to ensuring our listings are in excellent condition, from conducting repairs to undertaking painting and staging. We focus on making properties look outstanding, highlighting their most appealing features to evoke an emotional response from potential buyers. Every detail is significant, both now and in the past.

Why did you establish dluxuss Real Estate Group?

After leading highly successful business teams and earning Coldwell Banker’s top Global Luxury designation, the International Presidents Circle, and Million Dollar GUILD™ recognition, I embarked on a new venture. I founded dluxuss Real Estate Group, assembling a contemporary, sophisticated, and knowledgeable team of top-tier real estate professionals.

What sets dluxuss apart from other real estate groups?

14 / Our City Weston / December 2023 / OurCityMedia.com

DENICE LANDAETA REALTOR®

Our reputation stems from our inventive marketing strategies, exceptional real estate knowledge, sharp negotiation skills, and unwavering commitment to our clients. Our distinctive marketing campaigns have a global reach, maximizing exposure. This approach has enabled me to sell over 250 properties in the last three years. Our broad network of local and international clients has also helped us build an extensive portfolio of buyers, including those seeking vacation and investment properties.

Could you elaborate on your marketing strategy?

We provide our clients with a unique international marketing campaign, distributing professional photos, videos, and flyers to over 45,000 international clients and 550 websites. We showcase your property to our exclusive luxury list of over 15 million potential buyers daily. Additionally, your property will feature on our website, which attracts significant daily traffic and serves as a resource for international buyers and sellers seeking reliable local real estate market information.

Could you tell us about your team’s background?

The dluxuss Real Estate Group comprises five members. We collaborate with several attorneys who assist with client relocations from abroad and manage investment opportunities for rental income. Karina Hernandez, with her pharmacy background, offers meticulous

staging techniques and home decor advice to ensure properties look their best. Gemma Villadegut, with her banking experience, aids luxury clients in understanding the financial aspects of transactions. My background in international business and expertise in commercial deals and investments complete our team’s diverse skill set. In 2022, our team sold over $43 million in gross sales and closed 53 transactions.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

This year has been especially rewarding for us. We ranked #139 among America's best agents, #66 in team volume, and #60 in Units nationwide. Additionally, I (Denice Landaeta) was ranked #32 among Latino agents (NAHREP Nationwide). We are in the top 1.5% nationwide and I am the #2 agent in the 2022 Weston Market share. These achievements demonstrate our passion and commitment to our community. Everyone dreams of their ideal home and lifestyle, and at dluxuss Real Estate Group, we have the expertise to make those dreams a reality. We specialize in matching your dream home with your lifestyle, showcasing our fresh take on luxury lifestyle living.

Happy Holidays!

T

he holiday season is upon us. With our incredible cultural and religious diversity, the winter holidays can have very different meanings for each of our readers. However, one constant is celebrating with friends and loved ones. Our family celebrates on Christmas Eve Eve (two days before Christmas) with an extended family dinner, followed by a “Yankee Swap” gift exchange. In a Yankee Swap, each participant brings a wrapped gift. The gifts are opened in sequence, where each player gets to unwrap a new gift or “steal” one that someone has already unwrapped. It is always great fun! Our kids often beg us to celebrate the fictional holiday Festivous, made famous on the sitcom Seinfeld. Our seventeen-year-old son is particularly interested in Festivous’ “airing of the grievances!” So far, we have successfully resisted! The Jaillet family and everyone at Our City Media wish you and your family a wonderful holiday season. We hope you take time to enjoy loved ones regardless of whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or even Festivous! Have a wonderful and safe Holiday Season.

G

et ready to channel your inner superhero, lace up those running shoes, and hit the pavement! The 20th Annual KID Hero 5K is scheduled for January 27th at Vista View Park in Davie. This family-friendly run/walk event goes beyond your typical road race, as it aims to raise vital funds for Kids In Distress (KID). Participants are encouraged to embrace their superhero alter egos by donning costumes, whether individually or as part of a team. The day's festivities will also feature a "Smallville" Kids Fun Run and Fun Zone, a Gotham-themed area, a Power-Up Breakfast, and a lineup of family-friendly entertainment. KID operates a five-acre multi-program campus in Fort Lauderdale and a four-acre campus in Southwest Ranches, including two family foster group homes. KID offers a wide range of services, including individual, family, and group therapy

and counseling, preschool and aftercare programs, summer camp initiatives, the recruitment, training, and support of foster/ adoptive homes, and services focused on prevention, reunification, family preservation, as well as maternal and child health.

We are thrilled to continue our partnership with the Arts Council providing this platform for people of all ages to showcase their artistic skills.” Also returning was 3-D chalk artist Ken Mullen, who drew a picture of 3 animals around a campfire roasting marshmallows. This was a huge photo op for both other artists and the attendees as they kneeled to join the animals in the fun. Quite a few people came after the event just to see the artwork and to take photos in the Mullen creation. The judges were fellow Arts Council of Greater Weston board member Lifrancis Rojas, Apia (Carolina V. Garcia ) and Kay Kira active WAG secretary. Lifrancis commented, “I strolled amidst the artists creating their masterpieces, capturing

the entire process in photos. Witnessing the creativity, ideas, and compositions unfold was truly inspiring. Each person was deeply engaged in their work, and I thoroughly enjoyed observing both the process and the final results.".

EAGLE POINT ELEMENTARY'S STORYBOOK PARADE 2023:

T

A SYMPHONY OF JOY AND MUSICAL INSPIRATION WITH CYPRESS BAY SOUND OF THUNDER MARCHING BAND

he annual Storybook Parade at Eagle Point Elementary School was nothing short of thrilling this year. Principal Christy de Zayas, who initiated this tradition 12 years ago alongside the Cypress Bay Sound of Thunder marching band, has successfully turned it into a beloved annual event. Students from both schools enthusiastically adorned themselves in costumes inspired by their favorite books, creating a vibrant parade along Indian Trace. Each grade had its own special moment in front of the school, where they could enjoy live excerpts from the Sound of Thunder's 2023 "Timeless" show. Stephanie Bescherelle, President of the Cypress Bay Band Boosters, shared her delight, saying, “The most rewarding part was witnessing the sheer awe on the faces of the little ones as they discovered and watched the band... especially those who were dancing or already 'conducting' along with our drum majors. For the band members, it's both fun and inspiring to see how they can impact younger generations with their love of music. We are also deeply thankful to the EPE Foundation for their unwavering support, providing the bus ride and treats for our students.” The band members were treated like royalty after their performance, enjoying donuts and coffee in the cafeteria. Special

moments were captured with EPE alumni, Band Seniors, and different sections of the band. Mrs. De Zayas expressed her gratitude in a heartwarming speech, thanking them for adding a special touch to the event and encouraging them to keep music as a central part of their adult lives. This event is part of a broader initiative at Eagle Point Elementary to expose students to the world of Performing Arts. The success of the Strings Orchestra, led by Dr. Spengler, the music teacher at Eagle Point for the past three years, has inspired Principal De Zayas to introduce a beginner band, percussion, and chorus program for her students in the upcoming 2023-24 school year.

Bon Voyage, Georgette!

MODS Releases Loggerhead Sea Turtle Into the Wild

T

he Museum of Discovery & Science (MODS), in partnership with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), Florida Atlantic University (FAU) Veterinary Care Program and Sea Turtle Care and Conservation Specialists, released its Loggerhead Sea Turtle Ambassador Georgette (Gette) into the wild on Sunday, November 5. Named in memory of generous Museum supporter, George Batchelor and The Batchelor Foundation, Gette resided in the Sea Turtle habitat at MODS since she arrived in October 2022. “Our sea turtle initiative has been an essential part of the Museum’s DNA since opening, and we have released dozens of sea turtles. Our mission is connecting people to inspiring science, and for thousands of MODS’ guests and community members who encountered Gette in our sea turtle observation exhibit, it was a truly meaningful experience,” said Joseph P. Cox, president and CEO of MODS. “With the goal of ocean release, the life sciences team at MODS worked diligently to help Gette sharpen her natural instincts by replicating experiences she will encounter in open waters. Now that she has achieved optimal growth, releasing her into the ocean is conservation in action for all to see.”

SEA TURTLE FACTS

• The Loggerhead is one of seven different species of sea turtles. Six of the species —Green (Chelonia mydas), Hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricate), Kemp’s Ridley (Lepidochlys kempi), Leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), Olive Ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) and Loggerhead (Caretta caretta) - can be found throughout the ocean, in both warm and cool water. The seventh species, the Flatback (Natator depressus), lives only in Australia. • The Loggerhead and Green sea turtles are listed as threatened. The Leatherback, Hawksbill and Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle species are listed as endangered everywhere due to human actions and lifestyles. • Accidental capture by fishing gear, which often results in death, is the greatest threat to most sea turtles. Climate change also impacts sea turtle nesting beaches and eggs. • Sea turtle populations are slowly recovering thanks to the collaborative effort of scientists, non-profits, universities, grassroots organizations and many dedicated people.

On July 23, 2022, Gette was hatched at FAU in Boca Raton as part of a study on how climate change affects the endangered sea turtle population. On October 25, 2022, Gette came to the Museum weighing 300 g (0.6 lbs.) For a year, Gette munched on daily buffets of shrimp, capelin and herring. She honed her swimming skills while keeping plenty of snappiness for a turtle. Now Gette, at 6.3 kilograms (13.9 lbs.) with a carapace length of 35.9 cm, is big and strong enough to journey into the wild. On October 31, 2023, Gette was transported via boat to a nearshore weed line where she was returned to the open water. Bon Voyage, Gette! The Museum has a permit from FWC that allows it to hold one loggerhead turtle for educational purposes. The FWC is responsible for matching turtles with educational centers. The release location is determined based on where the turtles were originally found and the conditions of the waters around Florida. While Loggerhead nests are the most common type of nest found in Florida, the species is still considered threatened in the state and endangered around the world. Humans pose a big threat to the species, and Gette helped educate visitors on how to make an impact with sea turtles. Simple ideas like picking up trash so it doesn’t end up in a turtle’s belly and avoiding single-use plastic like straws and plastic bags, which can look like food to a hungry sea turtle, can make a big difference. “Special thanks to The Batchelor Foundation, a private Florida foundation focused on grant-making to support children, animals, and the natural environment in South Florida, and FAU for collaborating on this critical environmental initiative,” said Cox. Stay tuned! MODS expects a new Loggerhead hatchling for care and growing bigger soon! Visit and support MODS, join a discussion at the Museum’s Turtle Talks or take a turtle walk with MODS next summer.

Performance Arts Auditions: Building Children’s Mental Strength By Inna Maor

A

uditions can be daunting for children, exposing them to pressure in an unfamiliar environment and high expectations from strangers. As parents, we often want to shield our children from these experiences, inadvertently amplifying their anxiety. However, this article highlights the importance of children participating in performance arts auditions and how we can support them to feel confident and empowered. Performance auditions offer children the chance to develop confidence, resilience, commitment, and hard work. These experiences equip children with mental strength, preparing them for future challenges and setbacks that life inevitably brings. Engaging in various art forms, such as dance, music, or drama, offers therapeutic benefits beyond education. It allows children to explore and express their emotions, enhance self-awareness,

cope with stress, boost self-esteem, and develop social skills. Children involved in the arts are better prepared not just for auditions but also for life. These auditions help them build mental resilience, courage, and determination, ultimately unlocking their full potential. As a mother of three and a performance artist and teacher with over 30 years of experience, I share some valuable tips to ensure your child's audition is a positive and constructive experience. Conscious Breathing: Teach children to use conscious breathing to manage stress. This relaxation technique involves taking full breaths into the chest and exhaling slowly through the nose, promoting calm, stress relief, awareness, higher energy levels, and mental clarity. Managing Emotions: Help children recognize and label their feelings, empowering them to understand how emotions influence their decisions. Validate their emotions and teach them they have choices in how to handle their feelings.

Challenging Negative Thoughts: Encourage children to challenge negative thoughts like "I can't do it" or "I'm not good enough." Teach them to be thought detectives, evaluating evidence that supports or refutes their assumptions. Taking Positive Action: Beyond maintaining composure and managing emotions, teach children to think realistically and take action. Show them they have the power to solve problems, create plans, and take small steps daily to achieve their goals. Challenges are opportunities to learn and grow, and the struggles of today build the strength needed for tomorrow. As parents, we must provide love, support, encouragement, and the tools for our children to become the best version of themselves.

WHAT IS NEUROLENS? By Dr. Jane Therrien, Optometric Physician

D

o you get headaches? Eyes that feel tired or dry? Discomfort with your computer use? Pain in your neck and shoulders? Bouts of dizziness? Do these symptoms tend to get worse towards the end of the day? Do they tend to correspond with long periods of using a computer, tablet, smartphone or even reading? If this describes you, you definitely aren’t alone; and like many others, you’re probably wondering why. Your eyes could be the problem, and Neurolenses could be the solution.

What is eye misalignment?

Each eye captures a clear photo, much like a camera. Your brain then fuses these two images. This line of communication between your eyes and your brain is a constant process that happens as long as both eyes are open. Some people’s eyes are perfectly aligned, meaning the visual data from their eyes can be combined seamlessly by their brain. But many others have what’s known as eye misalignment. For the vast majority of people with eye misalignment, this misalignment is much more pronounced when focusing on an object that is in close range. As we become more reliant on our digital devices, these symptoms have become more prevalent. You may have even heard these symptoms referred to as Computer VisionSyndrome. Given the past events of 2020, remote working and learning had become a reality for many people, causing eye misalignment to be more widespread. In fact, at least two out of three people experience the symptoms of eye misalignment. More than 55% of them experience these symptoms on a daily basis.

What are Neurolenses and do they work?

The lenses are inspired by a breakthrough discovery linking optometry and neurology. Neurolenses are designed to bring the eyes back into comfortable alignment. To do this, Neurolenses incorporate a technology called “contoured prism, “ which intelligently places the correction in the lenses where it’s needed the most. These lenses can be customized for every patient, and are available in any prescription. They are even a great solution for contact lens wearers or patients that don’t need a prescription at all. They are premium lenses that come standard in high quality materials with high quality anti-reflective treatments. Most importantly, Neurolenses lead to dramatic symptom relief for the majority of wearers. 93% of patients have experienced symptom relief from wearing Neurolenses. In fact, 81.6% of patients suffering from chronic daily headaches reported their symptoms were substantially reduced or “basically gone” after wearing Neurolenses for 90 days. In a study concerning Computer Vision Syndrome, 100% of the patients suffering of Computer Vision Syndrome had a positive response to treatment with Neurolenses. Many Neurolenses wearers have been able to greatly reduce or even eliminate the need for pain-relieving medications.

How do I find out if I’m a candidate for Neurolenses? •

The staff at Weston Family Eyecare will evaluate the frequency and severity of your symptoms.

They will clinically measure the amount of eye misalignment using a diagnostic device called the Neurolens Measurement Device. The information gathered will help Dr. Therrien create a complete visual solution to comprehensively address your unique needs. You can start your journey towards relief by taking the Neurolens Test online evaluation that will tell you if you are a potential candidate.

Take the test today! www.neurolens.com

Relief awaits you at Weston Family Eyecare. Schedule your appointment today. Back to the office, college, or school, we will guarantee vast improvements or you will be refunded 100% on the lens purchase. Share your success story and tag us on Instagram,Facebook, and Yelp. Thank you for choosing our independent doctor of optometry and supporting a fellow local business and woman in Weston.

UNLOCKING LUXURY: A REALTOR'S GUIDE TO ATTRACTING HIGH-NET-WORTH BUYERS IN WEST BROWARD COUNTY

A

By Rose Sklar

s an experienced Realtor in South Florida, I often engage with high-net-worth individuals looking to buy luxury homes in West Broward County. If you're considering selling your luxury property, understanding what these discerning buyers are looking for can be incredibly beneficial in making your home stand out. Here's a glimpse into their typical preferences:

Tech-Savvy Homes

Location is Key

A Room with a View

They love exclusive neighborhoods and areas near upscale amenities. If your home is near golf courses, luxury shopping, or country clubs, it’s a big plus.

Quality and Design Matter

These buyers appreciate unique architectural designs and high-quality finishes. The details that make your home not just a house but a work of art.

Smart home features are a huge draw. Automated security, lighting, and climate control systems are not just conveniences but a plus.

Privacy, Please

Homes that offer a sense of seclusion through gated entrances or expansive properties are highly sought after. It's all about creating a private sanctuary.

The Wow Factor

Luxury amenities like designer pools, gourmet kitchens, and custom wine cellars can really make your home stand out. These are the touches that elevate a home from high-end to ultra-luxurious.

If your property has stunning views or is waterfront, it’s a massive selling point. Connection to beautiful surroundings is always a winner.

Space to Breathe

Spacious layouts with high ceilings, large windows, and comfortable living spaces are in demand. It's about creating an open, airy, and inviting environment.

46 / Our City Weston / December 2023 / OurCityMedia.com

Convenience is Crucial

Proximity to major business centers and easy access to transportation can be key deciding factors for many buyers.

Community and Lifestyle

The local community's vibe and offerings are important. Good schools, cultural activities, and a sense of belonging can be very appealing. I am here to help you showcase these aspects of your home to attract the right buyers. With my expertise and your stunning property, we're confident in finding the perfect match. Let’s make your home the next sought-after luxury property in West Broward County!

LOTTERY DREAM OR FINANCIAL NIGHTMARE: HOW TO MAKE YOUR JACKPOT LAST By Andrea L. Jakob, Esq.

O

ne of my New Year’s resolutions is to win the Lottery, which I am sure is the goal of many. What do we need to know if we win? Edwin Castro won a huge $2.04 billion in the lottery on February 14, 2023, taking home $997.6 million at once, instead of getting it over 30 years. Someone in Maine also hit the jackpot with $1.35 billion. Winning the lottery means you need to think about how to use that money wisely. You don't want to lose it all like some winners do. Be patient. There's a grace period to claim your prize; in Florida, it's a 180-day countdown. Don't rush. Plan how to spend your money even before you get it. Draw your line in the sand. When your bank account balloons, so might your fan base. Family, old buddies, and even scammers may line up for a share. It's okay to say no. Still, you might want to give some away to people or charities. Remember, big gifts might mean big taxes. For 2023, you can give away $17,000 without tax or $34,000 with your spouse. Next year, it's $18,000, or $36,000 for couples. Think about taxes. The winner from California chose a one-time payment but won't get the full amount because of taxes. Before spending on big things, wait until you've paid all taxes. For example, about 24% of the winnings go to the IRS upfront. Then there's more to pay in April. The “lottery curse." This curse has become almost as famous as the lottery itself. Here's how the nightmare scenario typically unfolds for some unlucky winners: Imagine this: The moment you've won, your life turns into a non-stop party. Sounds great, right? But the plot twists. A luxury yacht here, a mansion there, and why not invest in your cousin's idea for underwater hotels? Suddenly, those millions that seemed endless are dwindling fast. Now that you're living the high life, your old budgeting habits have gone out the window. You've swapped coupons for caviar and budget flights for private jets. The thrill of buying whatever you want has replaced the satisfaction of saving for what you need. And in the final scene, just as quickly as your bank account ballooned, it deflates. You're left wondering where it all went wrong. The lottery dream has turned into a financial nightmare. It's a cautionary tale, but one that's all too real for some. Winning big can be confusing. Talk to professionals before buying or giving away a lot. Financial advisors can guide you to grow your money. Tax advisors help you understand the best way to take your winnings and make sure your taxes are right. As estate planners, we work with your advisors to make sure your money is safe, taxes are low, and your wealth goes where you want when you're gone. We'll help you make a plan that lasts and avoid quick choices you might regret. Contact us to set up a meeting and plan for your lottery winnings to benefit you and your family in the long term.

■ SAFETY CORNER

Safe Driving During The Holidays By Todd E. Draizin District Chief

T

he Broward Sheriff's Office Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services men and women would like to wish you and your families a very happy and healthy holiday season. The holiday season is a time of joy, festivities, and spending quality time with family and friends. While celebrations bring warmth to our hearts, they also bring increased traffic on the roads, making safe driving practices essential for everyone's well-being. To ensure a joyful and accident-free holiday season, consider these important safe driving tips: Plan Ahead: Before hitting the road, plan your route and check for realtime traffic updates. Avoid peak travel times if possible, as congested roads can lead to frustration and impatience, increasing the risk of accidents. Maintain Your Vehicle: Ensure your vehicle is in top condition before embarking on your journey. Check the brakes, tires, lights, and windshield wipers. Regular maintenance reduces the chances of unexpected breakdowns, ensuring a smoother and safer trip. Avoid Distractions: Stay focused on the road and avoid distractions like texting, making calls, or changing the radio. Be sure to check for directions prior to driving. Distracted driving is a leading cause of accidents. Keep your eyes on the road, your hands on the wheel, and your mind on driving. Drive Defensively: Be aware of other drivers' actions and anticipate potential hazards. Maintain a safe following distance, signal your intentions, and obey traffic rules. Defensive driving can help you respond effectively to unexpected situations, preventing accidents. Rest and Avoid Fatigue: If you're traveling long distances, make sure you are well-rested before getting behind the wheel. Fatigue impairs your reaction time and decision-making abilities, making it dangerous to drive. Take regular breaks to rest and refresh during your journey. Buckle Up: Always wear your seatbelt and ensure all passengers in the vehicle are properly restrained. Seatbelts significantly reduce the risk of injury in an accident, so make it a habit to buckle up before starting the engine. Children should be secured in an appropriate child restraint. For assistance with car seat installations, you may schedule an appointment online with a certified child passenger safety technician at: https://bsofirerescuepubliceducation.as.me/schedule/1009c52e. Watch for Pedestrians and Cyclists: Be especially cautious in areas with heavy foot traffic, such as shopping centers and residential areas. Watch out for pedestrians, cyclists, and children playing near the roads. Avoid Alcohol and Drugs: Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. If you plan to drink during holiday celebrations, arrange for a designated driver or use public transportation. Impaired driving is a major contributor to accidents, and it is entirely preventable. Stay Calm and Patient: While holiday traffic can be stressful, it is crucial to remain calm and patient. Aggressive driving and road rage only increase the risk of accidents. Take a deep breath, stay patient, and focus on arriving safely. By following these safe driving tips, you can contribute to making the holiday season enjoyable and accident-free for everyone on the road. Remember, safe driving is not just a responsibility; it's a gift you give to yourself, your passengers, and everyone sharing the road with you. Wishing you a happy and safe holiday season!

FESTIVE FLAIR

EIGHT HOLIDAY DECORATING TIPS FOR SOUTH FLORIDA

s the holiday season approaches, it's time to bring some festive cheer to our homes in sunny South Florida. While we may not have the traditional winter wonderland with snow-covered landscapes, we have our own unique way of celebrating the holidays under the sun. Here are some holiday decorating tips tailored to our tropical paradise.

1. Embrace the Beachy Vibes: South Florida is famous for its stunning beaches, so why not incorporate beach-themed decor into your holiday setup? Think seashell ornaments, starfish accents, and even a mini beach-themed Christmas tree with light blue and sandy beige hues. 2. Outdoor Decor: With our mild winter climate, take advantage of decorating your outdoor spaces. Hang string lights, place potted plants with red and green flowers, and consider a palm tree adorned with lights and ornaments as a delightful twist on a Christmas tree. 3. Tropical Centerpieces: Instead of traditional holiday centerpieces, opt for arrangements featuring tropical flowers like hibiscus, orchids, and bird-of-paradise. Place them in festive vases or containers with beachy accents. 4. Seashell Wreaths: Create a unique wreath by crafting one from seashells collected during your beach trips. Add some faux greenery and a ribbon for a holiday touch. 5. Coastal Stockings: Upgrade your stockings to beachy versions with seashell, starfish, or flip-flop motifs. Hang them on the mantel or a designated stocking holder.

6. Twinkling Lights: South Florida nights are perfect for creating a magical atmosphere with twinkling lights. Hang them on trees, fences, and around outdoor seating areas for a warm and inviting glow. 7. Outdoor Dining Al Fresco: Take advantage of the mild weather by setting up your holiday dinner or brunch outdoors. Decorate your outdoor dining area with tropical tableware, festive napkins, and candlelight. 8. Fresh Greenery: While pine trees may not grow naturally in South Florida, you can still find fresh greenery like eucalyptus and palm fronds to use in your holiday arrangements. In South Florida, holiday decorating is all about embracing our unique environment and infusing it with seasonal spirit. So, whether you're enjoying a beachside holiday or celebrating at home, these tips will help you create a festive atmosphere that's as warm and inviting as the South Florida sun. Happy decorating, and may your holidays be filled with joy and sunshine!

HEEL & ARCH PAIN IN ADULTS By Dr. Carlo A. Messina

P

lantar Fasciitis is an inflammation of the main ligament in the arch where it attaches to the heel bone and supports the foot. Causes can include excessive activity over a short period of time. This condition can occur in flat or high arched feet. Tight muscles, especially the calf and hamstrings, cause increased tension in the fascia. Poor shoe gear as well as walking barefoot on hard floors for prolonged periods of time is often a contributing factor. Symptoms include pain first thing in the morning when getting out of bed and putting the foot down to the ground. With walking, the pain usually diminishes. Pain can also occur after sitting for a prolonged period of time or getting out of a car and starting to walk. Occasionally burning, numbness, shooting or tingling into the heel happens with or without weightbearing. Extreme tenderness to touch the heel or arch region occurs, especially during or after activity. It is commonly associated with lower back pain, due to compensation and abnormal gait. Rarely swelling or discoloration to the heel occurs. Treatment starts with avoiding going barefooted as well as proper shoe gear to support the arch and heel. Anti-inflammatory medications to reduce the inflammation, both orally and Ultrasound-guided. Taping the foot to support it can give immediate relief. Custom molded orthotic (shoe insert) to permanently support the foot and prevent reinjury. Frequent stretching of the calf and hamstring muscles to improve overall flexibility is necessary. Night Splints are utilized to splint the foot at night to stretch the muscle in the back of the leg. Occasionally immobilization in a cast or a boot to completely rest the foot depending on level of pain and discomfort. Physical Therapy can be used to decrease pain and inflammation. If conservative measures fail, Shockwave therapy (EPAT), Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) or Stem Cell injections are used. Endoscopic surgery is a last resort to release a small portion of the ligament from the heel. Prognosis is excellent in over 99% of the cases if early and aggressive treatment is performed. No long-term problems are expected and surgery is rarely necessary for this condition.

Carlo A. Messina, DPM, is a Board Certified Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Diplomate American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. He is a Foot and Ankle Surgeon with the Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in treating infants, children, teens and adults. While a puppy can tug at anyone’s heartstrings, choosing a puppy should be more than an emotional decision. All too often, the cute and cuddly puppy that is purchased on impulse is relinquished to a shelter because it grew up to be a large, rambunctious dog. That’s why it pays to do your homework before you even look at a puppy. Start by researching the kind of adult dog that will be most compatible with your lifestyle. A book on dog breeds is a good starting place, but also ask veterinarians for their suggestions. They are very familiar with the different dog breeds and their suitability for each home. You can also visit dog shows to see many different breeds at once and talk with dog breeders and trainers. Consider the size of the adult dog and how it would fit into your household. Would you prefer a lap dog or do you have room for a large dog? Research the exercise and grooming requirements of different breeds. Some breeds, such as herding dogs, require more exercise and may be best suited for someone who is looking for a jogging partner. Other breeds need regular grooming, so you will need to plan for those expenses. Some breeds may be predisposed to certain health conditions. In some cases, you may ask the breeder to test for the condition, if possible, or provide a written guarantee should the condition occur. Mixed-breed dogs may be less likely to have certain health conditions than purebred dogs.

Where Should I Look for a Puppy?

If you prefer a purebred dog, ask veterinarians and breed clubs for advice on how to locate a reputable breeder. You’ll want to interview several breeders and ask to see the puppy’s parents and the breeding facility, if possible. It is important to visit the facility to ensure that a limited number of puppies are raised in a sanitary, well-socialized environment. When buying a purebred dog, it’s worth the effort to find a reputable breeder. Unfortunately, there are many puppy mills that
