BRING BACK THE

DIRECTOR'S NOTE When the reality set in that my second year directing the Rivers School musical would be during a global pandemic, did I panic? No!!... Okay, that's a lie. Yes, a little. Much of what I have known as a theatre educator, director, and performer was being challenged. When choreographing, the new "5, 6, 7, 8!" was now "6 feet apart, dancers!!" Creating Bring Back the Broadway Lights didn't come without hurdles. From not being able to go the traditional costume route due to song licensing, having our filming date postponed three times, organizing hundreds of audio and video clips from students, and learning complicated harmonies via zoom, it wasn't always easy. But you know what I quickly realized? Although putting on a musical was different this year, the important parts remained the same. Joy. I've gotten pretty good at knowing when someone is smiling under their mask! Our time in person together was precious, and the cast treated it like so. Community. Did you know these kids have a 32 person group chat? Yep! That's right; every single cast member is included. They have built a supportive and inclusive environment that has made every rehearsal feel safe. Creativity. 2020 was the year of getting creative to hold on to normalcy. This cast brought forward many exciting ideas on engaging our audiences through the screen and making this project a success. This process was a valuable lesson to us all on adapting to make it work! Passion. Above all else, these students love musical theatre and the confidence and self-expression that it brings. I hope their love and dedication to making this musical happen shines through while you watch our show from home. With this type of show, you are able to see all 32 dedicated cast members shine through with their own individuality. That is worth everything to me. When it is safe to do so, Broadway, just like Rivers Theatre, will be back, more vital than ever. Musical theatre is an important art form that offers so much in this world, and we can't wait till we can Bring Back the Broadway Lights. And though our focus in this show was on Broadway theatres, we dedicate this show to all theatre, local, regional, tours etc., currently on pause. These kids taught me nothing stands in our way. Together, we are unstoppable. Different? Yes. Less meaningful? Never. -Zoe Iacovelli Dedicated with love to Cora Mae Hogan, the newest Nonesuch Player <3.
