NEPSAC CHAMPIONS GIRLS’ VARSITY FIELD HOCKEY

The varsity field hockey team followed up a strong regular season by capturing its third New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Championship last November. Possessing stout defense and a potent offense, the Red Wings allowed just one goal for the entire tournament and outscored their three opponents by a margin of 8-1. “I can’t say enough about how proud I am of these girls,” said first-year Head Coach Janna Anctil. “For such a young team, they showed incredible maturity under pressure. They worked hard for this every single day and, as a coach, I really can’t ask for much more than that.” The road to the championship began with a trip to Simsbury, CT, in a thriller that went down to the wire. The Red Wings saw two of their goals disallowed before regrouping to notch a 2-1 win over The Ethel Walker School in double overtime. The semi-finals was a rematch with Dana Hall, a team that had pushed the Red Wings to overtime earlier in the season. The Red Wings jumped out to an early lead and never “ THEY WORKED relinquished it. Rivers went on to score two more goals and advanced to the finals on the back of the 3-0 win. Rivers HARD FOR THIS faced Proctor Academy in the championship tilt and once EVERY SINGLE DAY again jumped out to an early lead and, once again, never AND, AS A COACH, looked back. The Red Wings sailed to a 3-0 victory and a New England crown. Molly Eden ’15, Shannon Daley ’18, I REALLY CAN’T and Jamie Navoni ’15 scored for Rivers, while Lorraine Byrne ASK FOR MUCH ’17 earned the shutout with a stellar game in goal.

MORE THAN THAT.”

This is the second NEPSAC championship for senior cocaptains Jamie Navoni (8 goals and 3 assists on the year) and Molly Eden (4 goals), both of whom were ninth graders on the 2011 NEPSAC Championship team. Despite losing some talented players to graduation, the 2015 squad has some very promising rising talent, such as freshmen Shannon Daley and Jenna Letterie, both of whom were named to the All Tournament Team, and sophomore standout Kaitlin Wood (9 goals, 3 assists), who was named All-ISL and the tournament MVP.

NEPSAC CHAMPS GIRLS’ VARSITY HOCKEY

The Rivers girls’ ice hockey team has been knocking on the door of a New England championship for the past decade, qualifying and then often going deep into the playoffs each year, only to fall short. But with the seniors on the team leading a talented group of younger players, the Red Wings finally fulfilled their quest, capturing the 2015 NEPSAC Division II Championship by defeating Southfield 5-1 in the finals.

The Red Wings got off to a fast start in the finals. Within the first minute of the game, Sam Estes ’16 had an unassisted goal as she intercepted a clearing pass and split two defenders, sending

Coach Malcolm Spurling. “If we executed our systems and worked hard, we knew we would be successful.” Like she had for the entire of the season, Jordan Cross ’15, who co-

With a 16-8-1 record, the Red Wings were the #1 seed and the presumptive team to beat. The first two rounds of the tournament were hardfought nail-biters. Buoyed by a home crowd in the MacDowell Arena, the girls downed Gunnery 2-1 in the quarterfinals and and then squared off against Berwick Academy in the semifinals. While Rivers went up 2-0 in the second period, Berwick cut it to a 2-1 in the third period and seemed to have the momentum. But senior cocaptain Erin Connolly derailed their comeback by attacking a rebound, beating the Berwick goalie for the eventual game-winner. Berwick added another goal and kept the pressure on, but Rivers’ defense staved off the flurry in the waning seconds and celebrated in front of their fans.

a shot into the upper right corner of the net. In the second period, Alice Pingeon ’16 scored the second goal with an assist from Lyndsey Smith ’15 to make it 2-0. In the third period, Lorraine Byrne ’17 scored her first goal of the season driving hard to the net and picking up a rebound off of the Southfield goalie from senior Jordan Cross’s shot. Emily Smith ’18 scored the fourth goal with assists from Jenna Letterie ’18 and Mady McEachern ’16. The final goal was scored by Erin Connolly ’15, after she picked up the puck in the neutral zone and skated through the opponent’s defense to score unassisted. “We approached the final play-off game thinking that we would keep everything simple and support each other out on the ice,” commented Head

captained the team with Laura Schmidlein ’15 and Connolly, was a major factor throughout the playoffs and was named MVP of the tournament as a result. Cross, a four-year starter, logged considerable ice time spearheading both the power play and penalty kill situations throughout the season and tournament, and scoring 3 goals and notching 1 assist during the NEPSAC run. “I give credit to the team and their leadership for listening and working hard throughout the season in our practices, and their commitment to playing our systems in all three zones on the ice,” said Spurling. “I am proud of my players and coaches for their perseverance and hard work, which has led to their success.”

2014 ISL CHAMPIONS GIRLS’ VARSITY SOCCER

The varsity girls’ soccer team stormed through another highly successful season last fall, finishing with a 10-1-1 record and a share of the ISL championship title. Anchored by NSCAA All-American and All-ISL Defensive Player of the Year Liz Webber ’16, the Red Wings defense allowed just three goals in league play, keeping their opponents scoreless for over 800 minutes of game time before allowing a goal in their title-clinching 5-1 win over St. George’s. “The team had great senior leadership which led to great team chemistry,” said Coach Susana Donahue. “Every member of the team wanted to win for each other and their school.” Donahue’s club graduated four experienced seniors in Jordan Cross, Olivia McSweeney, Antonia Eidmann, and Lyndsey Smith, but return a talented core that should see them atop the ISL standings again in the fall of 2015.

SAMUELS SHINES ON THE RIVERS COURT SOPHOMORE SENSATION JERMAINE SAMUELS Jermaine Samuels has had a tremendous impact on the Rivers basketball program from the moment he arrived as a freshman in 2014. In his first year for the Red Wings, he meshed easily with a veteran squad of mostly seniors and helped Rivers capture the ISL championship. In his second year, the 6’6” small forward continued to impress and score, passing the 1000 points mark even before the season was out. As a result, Samuels was named the 2015 ISL Player of the Year, a Boston Globe All-Scholastic, and the NEPSAC Class B Co-Player of the Year. Samuels has dazzled Rivers fans and teammates alike with his ability to score with explosive moves inside the paint, from above the rim, and from beyond the arc. One particular highlight during the 2014-15 campaign was Rivers’ 87-80 victory over Milton. Rivers was locked in a battle for the lead all game, but then Samuels, who had been hitting shots all game, really caught fire. He finished with 40 points, which, along with 34 points from teammate and fellow sophomore Azar Swain (All-ISL), helped seal the win. Samuels been garnering lots of attention in the greater basketball world as well. His success in AAU earned him an invitation to the Nike Elite 100 in St. Louis last summer and ESPN has ranked him as high as 20th in their ESPN 25 poll of top sophomores in the country, making him the highest ranked sophomore in the region.

Kristen Daley ’15 was a fixture of the Rivers girls’ basketball team since her freshman year and her commitment to the sport earned her a nomination for the 2015 McDonald’s All-American Basketball Game. Daley is the fourth Rivers girls’ basketball player to earn this distinction, joining Clare Sullivan ’11, Emilee Daley ’13, and Jen Berkowitz ’14, all of whom are currently playing college basketball at the Division I level. Daley is pursuing her own college playing career at the University of Pennsylvania. Last year as captain, Daley helped the girls’ team finish 2nd in the ISL and make their 10th straight trip to the postseason with a final record of 22-4. During her time at Rivers, the Red Wings amassed an 89-13 record, including the 2012 New England Preparatory School Athletic Council Class B Championship. She is a two-time All-ISL selection and was a 2013-14 New England All-Star.

SKI TEAM WINS 4TH STRAIGHT TITLE BOYS’ VARSITY SKI TEAM The boys’ varsity ski team claimed its fourth consecutive NEPSAC Championship last winter. The team was led by co-captains Stephen Richlen ’15 and Tom Corcoran ’15, who were on all four championship teams, and got excellent finishes from Ben Freeland ’16 and James Bradley ’17. All four earned All-New England honors. Rounding out the squad was Ben Pasculano ’15, another four-year veteran of the squad and key contributor. The race day started out well for Rivers. After the first runs of the slalom event, Rivers had four skiers in the top 10. But on their second runs, Freeland fell and Richlen missed a gate and had to hike up to finish, costing him valuable seconds. However, thanks to Corcoran’s 4th place finish—the best of his Rivers career—the team still clung to 2nd place. With the championship on the line, the pressure was on for the afternoon GS event. Once again, the Rivers skiers delivered when they needed to. Richelin finished 4th, followed by Freeland at 6th. The Red Wings’ overall score of 48 earned them a first place tie and they were named co-champions.

The Rivers girls’ soccer team has experienced extraordinary success over the past few seasons, thanks in large part to the Red Wings play on defense. Coaches both in the ISL and across the country have taken notice of one particular cog in the Rivers machine, honoring Liz Webber ’16 with both the 2014 ISL Defensive Player of the Year award and National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-American recognition. Webber follows in the footsteps of Maclaine Lehan ’14 who earned both honors in 2013 after winning the ISL’s award in 2012. Webber also became the second All-American to play for Coach Susanna Donahue. Playing in the center of the Red Wings defense, she led a unit that allowed just five goals all season and reached the NEPSAC Class B semifinals. In addition to her defensive duties, Webber scored 6 goals and added 5 assists for a total of 17 points.
