Dear Friends, Like so many other things in our lives, preparing this edition of our alumni magazine is being done under conditions most of us have never before experienced. The impact of COVID-19 is being felt by each of us at Saint Viator High School on a daily basis, as I am sure it is in most of your lives. As I write this, we are about to enter our second month of full in-person learning. I am very proud that we are one of the few schools in the area that committed to being in the classroom from the start of the school year and our success to date has not happened by chance. Our faculty, staff and students have committed to new health and safety protocols and held one another accountable in the common pursuit of being and remaining on campus. We have over two dozen alumni among the faculty and staff this year, some of whom we highlight in the following pages. If you know of an alum who is teaching or working here, please reach out and thank them for their commitment. They are deserving of some appreciation for all they have done. The alumni of Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary High Schools continue to do exceptional things after graduation. In this edition you’ll read about an award-winning journalist who has published his first book, along with several who find themselves working together in professional sports - and crossing paths in the NBA bubble in Orlando. We also share some news about new ways in which you can stay connected to one another and provide a new tool that will allow you to assist current students in a unique way. Flipping through these pages you will also meet our new Alumni Relations Manager and be introduced to the new leadership of our Alumni Association Board. When I see them in action, I am reminded of a segment of our Values Statement, “Saint Viator forms students who are faithfilled, intellectually inspired, ready to serve, and fully engaged in the Viatorian mission.” The work of so many alumni clearly represents the fulfillment of that part of our overall mission. One of the great annual traditions in our community, the Alumni Memorial Mass will also be impacted this year as we cannot meet in person in our Chapel as we would each fall. But undaunted, we will offer a livestream of the event so that we can virtually be fueled by the gospel and nourished by the Eucharist and remember those alumni who have passed away. Wherever you are, I hope this edition of A Lion for Life finds you in good health and doing well in your personal and professional pursuits. May God bless you and keep you in His care always.

Saint Viator Honors Class of 2020 Graduates
W
hile Saint Viator High School’s annual Baccalaureate Mass and commencement ceremony took
new form this year due to COVID-19, the Saint Viator community maintained traditions in new ways. To avoid the risks associated with hosting a large gathering, Saint Viator celebrated the Class of 2020 from home. This year’s Baccalaureate Mass was still held in the Alumni Memorial Chapel, however this time with only a handful of community members present. Instead, students and parents watched and engaged via livestream on social media.

The school’s 57th annual commencement ceremony was also celebrated online. Each graduating senior was individually recognized in a video montage as were the nominees and winners of the prestigious Christopher Erdmann and Andrew Johnstone Awards. Athan Huelskamp was named the 2020 winner of the Andrew Johnstone Award, which is given to a graduate who showed outstanding leadership and spirit. The Christopher Erdmann Award went to Bryce McDonnell, whose name now will be etched on the Christopher Cup, along with more than 47 other prestigious winners. The award recognizes a student who has taken active involvement and leadership in the improvement of Saint Viator High School. The ceremony video also included a remote performance of Saint Viator choir members performing “I Will Sing You The Stars” by Mark Burrows and snapshots of legacy students and alumni parents.

Bill Faltinoski, Longtime Fine Arts Chair, Retires After 38 Years

No matter the era you attended Sacred Heart of Mary or Saint Viator, it is most likely that you can look back on your four years and recognize some significant change that took place in the school between orientation and graduation. Now imagine being in the school for 38 years. Bill Faltinoski, the longtime department chair for Fine Arts at Saint Viator, recently retired after nearly four decades in the school. For Bill, change was seen in almost every aspect of the school. Mr. Faltinoski arrived as an art teacher and among his tasks was launching a photography program that utilized black and white 35 mm cameras. “We had to build a darkroom, create a curriculum, and we were really just making it up as we went along.” Technology is one of the areas that experienced the most change over the years. Photo classes evolved from those 35 mm cameras to digital units as the need for a darkroom all but disappeared. The fine arts department was expanding, ultimately creating Art 1, 2, 3 and 4 classes. “In my second year, we purchased a Mac 512K computer,” said Faltinoski. “Everything ran on a disc. We didn’t think computers and art would ever belong together.”

Over the years the program expanded heavily into digital arts as Faltinoski and his peers learned “that computers and technology were tools that could enhance the creative process, not replace it.” He pointed to technology allowing students to create models from which they could draw or to use with clay for sculpting as ways in which the community adapted. Eventually tools like 3D printers took the program to new areas as a major renovation brought more space for band and the arts. “One of the rooms we used originally had ten altars in it. The Viatorians used them so they could each say mass every day.” As with many people who were around at the time, Faltinoski recalls the transition to co-ed as being a milestone. “There was a lot of discussion about it but we just kept going. It wasn’t a big deal.” What was a big deal to Faltinoski was the interaction among faculty. In the mid-70s the school used a nationally recognized approach of dividing the schools into four unique programs, each focused on a particular area of study. “It was an exciting time to be a teacher,” he said. “There was a real focus on innovation. It was clear we had to evolve but it was the best of both worlds at the time.” While he will miss the opportunity to interact with students and peers on a daily basis, he still remains close with past faculty members including Tom Cole and Mary Jo Burns. While education will continue to evolve, the one constant among Saint Viator alumni is the impact Bill Faltinoski had on them over 38 years of teaching. He will be missed, but his legacy will remain in the fine arts department that he helped develop.

It’s a Small World in the NBA Bubble
S
ince the NBA announced their season would resume in Orlando, Florida in late July, siblings Lauren Mroz ’14 and Kevin
Mroz ’07 have enjoyed reuniting and working at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in the infamous NBA “bubble.” Lauren never expected anything like a global pandemic going into her third year as an event coordinator for the NBA. “Each team usually manages their teams at their home arenas, so it has been an adjustment now managing all the teams, executives, and league VIPs down here in one place. To keep everyone as safe as possible, there is no exception to the rules here.” Identified with different credential colors, everyone has a place in the bubble. Teams and players limited to designated resorts have green credentials, whereas those with yellow credentials, like Lauren and Kevin as well as broadcast and media professionals, have a little more freedom with going off-site to approved Disney-operated locations. As an event coordinator, one is used to wearing many hats, but this is different. Lauren has also added usher, security, and sanitization spotter to her job description since there is limited staff and personnel allowed in the arenas. “Daily coronavirus testing and frequent temperature checks makes everyone feel incredibly safe - the NBA really has done a phenomenal job.” Founding ZORM Event and Transportation Services in June 2016, Kevin was excited when the NBA hired him to work with them down in Orlando. “I had a lot of events cancelled in early spring when COVID first started, so I am so fortunate for the NBA allowing me to bounce back.” Kevin takes care of all the logistics for team owners and executives in the yellow credential level of the bubble: he manages transportation to and from the hotel and the arenas, meets with team owners and executives when they arrive, distributes credentials, and escorts personnel to the testing areas to ensure health and safety protocols are being met. “Without 20,000+ fans, the post-game traffic is fantastic!” Both Lauren and Kevin graduated from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and participated in Illini Pride, which organizes the student sections at university athletic events. Lauren is also joined by classmate Nick Gruntivig ’14 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. As an audio engineer, Nick works as part of the broadcast audio team for TNT. He

manages the announcer booth area in the Main Arena: setting up the announcer boxes and announcer headsets, dealing with audio adjustments and troubleshoots in the booths, and making sure the IFB sound clean and the Talk Back to the TV Truck works. Kevin attests that Saint Viator provided a great space for shaping his future endeavors. “The community-based atmosphere truly set me up for future success. Collaborating a lot inside and outside of the classroom has stuck with me and helped me get to where I am today.” Lauren reflects on how her leadership roles helped develop her into the worker she is. “The Saint Viator community really set the bar high to do my best in whatever role I am in. I am so thankful for my teachers and coaches for showing me various ways to be a strong leader and to seek new opportunities in all that I do.” The Mroz siblings plan on staying in Orlando until the NBA finals conclude midOctober. n

He is currently a senior project manager at the Habitat Company in Chicago, working on multiple new real estate developments in North Lawndale and the Fulton River District. “The lessons I learned in graduate school echo the lessons my family and Saint Viator High School taught me. 1. Work hard at everything you do. 2. Respect everyone. 3. When you get knocked down get right back up. 4. Always do the right thing even if no one is looking. 5. While COVID-19 restrictions did not allow for anyone other than immediate family, Lauren Drolet married Michael Cullum this summer. Rev. John Van Wiel, CSV, longtime Saint Viator chemistry teacher, married them. Philip Mesi opened cold-pressed juicery Pure Green’s second franchised location in Chicago in August.

Pulitzer Prize Nominee Michael Comerford ’77 Publishes First Book What do you do next when your resume includes entries such as being an awardwinning journalist, studying Buddhism in the Himalayas, winning a heavyweight boxing championship in Ireland, swimming the headwaters of the Nile, fighting off a hippo attack, and touring ecological disaster areas in the Amazon? For Michael Sean Comerford ’77 the answer was obvious – spend a year hitchhiking across North America working in carnivals from Alaska to Florida. Why? To write a book and satisfy an urge that had lingered throughout an international journalism career that took him around the globe as a business writer. As a journalist, Comerford’s career included bylines in the Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Tribune, New York Daily News, Budapest Sun, Budapest Business Journal, Prague Post, Moscow Times and in syndication at Tribune Media and Copley News Service newspapers. He was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and received Peter Lisagor, AP and Best Series in Chicago awards, and is a former board member of the Chicago Journalists Association and the American Society of Journalists and Authors. And now, he’s been a carny, too. Comerford explained the transition from journalist to author noting the freedom from being objective. “In the book I can take a point of view,” he explained. “In a book like this I can write about visceral things that journalists can’t – things like dealing with death, falling in love and greed. It broadened the range of what I could write about.”
While traveling with the carnivals Comerford worked rides, ran games and even hosted the freak show. He learned that many carnies are run-aways, leaving behind bad family situations. He learned about the loneliness of the road, about violence and dependency, and much about the human condition. “One of my goals was to ask the most intimate questions I could. That was both good and a huge mistake. Grown men and women would cry as they told their stories and I had to balance my desire to know against the pain they felt in sharing.”

Alumni Association Looks Ahead In August, new Alumni Relations Manager Krystal Harris ’15 welcomed new and existing members of the Alumni Association Board to the first group meeting of the year. Leading the Board this year are chairpersons, Jim Platania ’08 and Jennifer Culhane ’00. Despite not being able to plan for a homecoming tent or class reunions due to COVID-19, the group has already begun sharing ideas on how to bring alumni together this year. Among the first steps will be some virtual networking events for the Loyal Hearts Business Forum. The Board is responsible for connecting and interacting with over 15,000 graduates of Saint Viator and Sacred Heart. We’ll update their progress in future editions of A Lion for Life and through the monthly Alumni eNewsletter. Each fall for over 30 years, family members and classmates of deceased Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary alumni have gathered in the chapel for the annual Alumni Memorial Mass. When Fr. Charles Bolser, CSV, began this tradition his intention was to provide an opportunity for the community to remember the lives of those who walked the halls of Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary, to celebrate the legacy of these women and men who are gone from our sight, but not from our hearts, and to remind each other of God’s promise of new life. The Mass also provides the opportunity for family members to know that they are not alone in their grief. Saint Viator is a “home” where others will listen, share stories, laugh, cry and pray with them. As is the case with so many things, while this year’s Alumni Memorial Mass will be different, we will still remember, celebrate, and believe, as we gather virtually. Technology will allow us to reach out beyond the walls of the Saint Viator chapel. There will also be a worship aid online that will list the names of our deceased alumni by class. We realize that we may not be aware of all of the Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary alumni who have passed away. If you have a deceased family member whose name is not on the list in the worship aid, please email the obituary notice to alumni@ saintviator.com. We will add the notice to the alum’s record, add their name to our list, and order a plaque for them to be in place for the 2021 Alumni Memorial Mass. As family members come together in faith to prayerfully support each other around the Lord’s table, the Alumni Memorial Mass is truly an experience of the Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary community at its best. Saint Viator Welcomes New Alumni Relations Manager During her years as a stand-out softball player at Saint Viator, Krystal Harris ’15 knew the importance of being part of a team. As the new Alumni Relations Manager for the school, Harris is quickly adapting to being part of a bigger, always growing team. “It’s an honor to be presented with this opportunity,” said Harris. “Saint Viator was an important part of my development as a student, an athlete, and an individual, and I cannot wait to begin contributing in this new role.” Harris joined the Development Department in August and has been moving at a fast pace ever since. In recent weeks she has helped get the restructured Alumni Association Board in place, meeting with new Board leaders, Jim Platania ’08 and Jennifer Culhane ’00, on a regular basis, and helping introduce a new Board Charter. “We are giving the Board more responsibility and ownership of alumni activities,” Harris said. “Unfortunately due to COVID-19, we can’t have in-person meetings or many of our traditional events right now, but the group is enthusiastic and very talented so we are building a great foundation for the future.” Vice President of Development Tom Ramsden is thrilled to welcome Harris back to Saint Viator. “We conducted an extensive search this summer and are fortunate to have someone with Krystal’s skill set, enthusiasm, and passion for Saint Viator
Paying Tribute Several years ago Saint Viator added a new touchscreen display in the main hallway to recognize a variety of achievements among students, faculty, and alumni. Among those recognized are faculty and alumni who have served in the military. The screen also recognizes the past winners of the major annual awards given by Saint Viator and previously at Sacred Heart including the Christopher Erdman Award, the Andrew Johnstone Leadership Award, and the Valedictorian and Salutatorians for both schools. Also included are those who have been recognized as Distinguished Alumni from both schools as well as the recipients of faculty awards including the Father Louis Querbes Award, the President’s Service Award, the Principal’s Service Award, and the Greatest Gift Award. It’s also incumbent on us to provide enjoyable opportunities for alumni to get together and stay connected.” Clearly the Development Team and Alumni Association have found an MVP candidate.

Beginning in November, we will be launching the new AlumniConnect platform that will allow alumni to connect and network with one another digitally. The new tool will provide opportunities to post resumes and jobs, find and network with other alumni, form social or professional communities, find or become a mentor, and even hire other Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary graduates.
“We want to do everything we can to leverage our network of alumni to help others find work,” said Alumni Relations Manager Krystal Harris. “The students who graduate from Saint Viator share a dedication to service, community and excellence, so helping employers find exceptional employees is just as important as helping our hardworking alumni find jobs they are passionate about.”
Share Your Experience with New College & Career Connection The college search process has evolved tremendously over the years. For students with heavy academic and extracurricular workloads, finding time to visit campuses can be difficult, especially if it is a first-time experience for their family. Pairing that need with the desire expressed by Saint Viator and Sacred Heart alumni to give back, the College & Career Connection has been formed. In this new program, alumni can register online, noting where they received their degree, both undergraduate and graduate or professional, and those entries are stored in a database that can be accessed by Saint Viator College Counselor Amy Herbert. If a current student would like to know more about a school they are considering, Herbert can provide them with the contact information of one or more alumni who attended that school. “It’s going to be a great way for students to learn more about a school than they might discover on a traditional campus visit,” Herbert said. “It should help answer questions families have

about the environment not only on a campus, but perhaps in a particular area of study.” Alumni Relations Manager Krystal Harris is excited about providing another opportunity for alumni to give back. “The College & Career Connection is a simple way for our graduates Amy Herbert to lend a hand to students facing a very big decision.
