Back to
SCHOOL, back to routine...
by Gina Rosenfeld, MD
Soon to be gone are the lazy, relaxed days of summer. With summer coming to an end, it’s time to get back to some structure and routine and the best way to start the school year off right is with healthy habits…
Sleep
If you are like most families, your kids have probably been staying up way too late and sleeping in, with no real schedule for sleep. It goes without saying that sleep is essential for all of us to function, and research has proven that kids need a lot of sleep to function effectively during the day. In fact, sleep-deprived children are often fidgety, or even disruptive, in the classroom, and poor quality sleep can lead to anxiety, depression, defiance, poor grades and poor school performance. So how much sleep do your kids need? Between the ages of 5 and 11, kids need about 10 to 11 hours of sleep every night, while 12 to 18 year olds need at least 9 hours a night. With that being said, now is the time to get your kids back into the habit of a healthy bedtime and nighttime routine; once you start, it’s important to stick to it and stay consistent, even on weekends. If your kids are used to staying up late, have them go to bed 15 minutes earlier each
night until they are back to their school bedtime. To help them wind down and relax, have an age-appropriate calming bedtime routine. I vote for a bath or shower, then reading for pleasure, but you can come up with your own routine -- just make sure it’s the same every night so they associate it with sleep. Make the bedroom a cool and
comfortable sleep environment with a properly fitting bed and bedding. Lastly, turn off all electronics at least an hour before bedtime and keep them out of the bedroom, as they are both stimulating and a distraction.
attention, and stay in a good mood. A good breakfast is also associated with increased academic and athletic performance, improved immune function and decreased incidence of obesity. It’s no secret that breakfast is important, but did you know it might even make your kids smarter? New research shows that kids who eat breakfast every day perform better on tests compared to kids who only eat breakfast occasionally. Here are some healthy/quick ideas: Oatmeal with yogurt and berries, healthy banana bread with peanut butter, whole grain waffle with peanut butter (top it with sliced banana), fruit and cheese, breakfast burritos (made ahead of time and pulled from the freezer), and smoothies. My final suggestion – practice what you preach. Children learn by example, and one of the best ways to get your kids to adopt these healthy habits is to follow them yourself.
Enjoy the rest of the summer and have a well-rested, healthy start to the school year!
Breakfast
While sleep gives the body time to recharge and grow, a good breakfast gives the body and brain the energy it needs to think, pay

Our San Diego
Publisher’s Letter
Enjoy Summer, then Say Hello to School! Summer is almost over—your school may be starting before
the end of August. This is a great time to photograph your child. I like Pam Molnar’s suggestion to have your child stand on books so he is as tall as you. Each year, remove some books since he has grown taller. For more of Pam’s suggestions on first-day-of-school school traditions, see page 36. At 5’6” I am becoming smaller than my grandkids. Three of the five already passed me up and the two remaining boys have tall parents, so before long I am going to be #11 in our immediate family. Teachers are always helpful in providing great tips to start the school year off right. See page 22. Get involved in your kids’ school. Your kids love seeing you there and you are showing them that education is important. If you have moved to San Diego County recently or think a new school would give your child a new look on life, check out the schools that are advertising in this issue. Our education directory is on page 32. Review it for great information. Tell our advertisers you saw their ad in Family Magazine. Before school starts, take time for last-minute San Diego family adventures. On page 18 Lisa Pawlak gives us a great overview of the Ocean Connectors tours in San Diego Bay and South Bay. Then read about other indoor and outdoor fun on page 50, including a scavenger hunt in Old Town through Downtown San Diego. We have had a fun summer and will have a great school year. Enjoy!

What’s your best back-to-school advice? Jenny Burman, calendar editor For parents of kindergarteners: You’ll probably experience first-day jitters, but don’t let your child sense your anxiety. Keep positive and assure him that school is a fun place where he can meet new friends and learn. Ramona Warner, marketing representative Start your back-to-school routine a few days prior to the first day to make getting up easier. I pack a note in my kids’ lunches, encouraging them to do their best and letting them know how proud I am. Tony Andrews, marketing representative For kids: Sit up front in your classroom if you have a choice, so there are fewer distractions. Ask questions when you don’t understand—before, during or after class. Be nice and make new friends. Giovanni Baldan, marketing representative For parents: If you want to know how your kids interact at school, volunteer to supervise during lunch break or help out in the classroom. But just observe—don’t overcrowd your child and become a “helicopter parent.”

The San Diego Natural History Museum (theNAT) fascinates and educates visitors about the natural world and promotes an understanding of the evolution and biodiversity of southern California and Baja California, Mexico. TheNAT was founded in 1874 by a small group of citizen scientists whose primary mission was to explore and interpret the natural world through their observations, research, and education. The museum’s brand new permanent exhibition “Extraordinary Ideas from Ordinary People: A History of Citizen Science” opens August 20. It will feature multimedia interactives and touchable models and emphasize that it’s not necessary to be a scientist to participate in science. “The learning opportunities at theNAT are endless. There’s something for everyone!” says April, a Clairemont resident. Visit theNAT during “Balboa Park After Dark”, which offers extended hours on Friday evenings through September 2. (free of charge) to low-income public elementary school students in National City, the innovative programs have already positively impacted more than 10,000 local students. The organization also aims to impact change beyond San Diego’s borders. A bilingual, cross-border knowledge exchange with kids in Mexico (through a pen-pal program) encourages global awareness and stewardship of our interconnectedness. The hope is that future generations will be more empowered to work together to protect the health of our oceans. Ocean Connectors’ curriculum focuses on the importance of protecting marine environments, among other Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) related concepts. It meets both common core and national learning standards. As one Palmer Way School student recently stated during a habitat restoration event, “It’s fun being aware of your surroundings.” Another enthusiastic student reflects on her Ocean Connectors field trip, “Now I know that you can do a lot of things to help the turtles, for example the three R’s—reduce, reuse, recycle. The trip was sensational. It was awesome. I learned about sharks, turtles and a lot more.” To help continue to fund these programs free of charge to underserved youth, the new public Eco Tour adventures are designed to allow families and groups of all ages, from all locations, to experience nature programs while also supporting the organization’s mission. In other words, by booking a tour, you are not only enhancing your own lives, but also enriching the lives of thousands of kids in San Diego.

Smart Start:
Tips from Teachers to Jumpstart the New School Year
Christa Melnyk Hines
Whether the sound of school bells are music to
your ears or a bittersweet reminder that the freespirited summer days are over, these tips from the pros will help you and your child enjoy a smart, happy start to school. Push the re-set button. A week or two before school starts, ease into regular bedtime and morning routines. Nudge kids back into the habit of daily reading (if they’ve slacked off) and play math games to review.
“Think about re-setting structure at home and what changes need to happen so it’s not a total shock to everyone’s system,” says Christine Vohs, a second grade teacher. Plan ahead for hectic mornings by gathering healthy, easy-to-prepare breakfast foods packed with nutrients and protein. Wall calendars with activities color-coded for each family member and daily checklists for each child can help establish expectations and keep your family organized. Build anticipation. Got a youngster who’s bummed to head back to school? Stay upbeat. Remind him of school subjects that spark his curiosity that he’ll learn about this year, whether it’s multiplication, coding or a special grade-level project. Tips for success “Talk to your for middle school children about students: friends they haven’t • Ask questions when seen all summer you don’t understand. and about new kids • Listen and follow joining their class,” directions. says first grade teacher Megan • Come prepared to Jasperson. “This class with materials is sure to get them needed. excited for the • Participate—be willing school year to begin.” to try. Show support. • Set goals and create “Avoid teasing your challenges for yourself. child or acting as if you’re overjoyed to send him back to school because this can make him wonder why you’re so eager to be away from him,” says Becky DeNoon, a third grade teacher. Instead, offer encouragement and support. Remind him that it’s normal to feel disappointed about summer break coming to a close, but that

“Kids feel embarrassed on the first day when they aren’t prepared,” Jasperson says. Reduce uncertainty. Often kids feel nervous about unknowns like transitioning to a new teacher, a new school or a different set of classroom rules. Take advantage of any back-toschool or orientation events that your school offers to help your apprehensive scholar familiarize himself with the classroom, meet classmates and connect with the teacher before school starts. Seek out friendly faces. If you’ve recently moved to the community or switched schools, look for other families with children your child’s age to arrange a play date. Some schools have parent Facebook pages. Hop on and ask if anyone would like to get together at the park before school begins. Many parents love to help welcome new families. These efforts will lessen first-day jitters when your youngster knows he’ll see a few familiar faces when he gets there. Have an adolescent heading into middle school? Encourage him to join afterschool clubs and activities. His involvement will help him form connections with peers who share his interests, says Traci Keeler, a middle school teacher and coach. Create a homework spot. Designate an area in your home that’s conducive to focus and concentration and where you can easily jump in to provide assistance when necessary. While purchasing school supplies, also stock a homework caddy or station with scratch paper, pens, pencils, erasers, markers, highlighters and anything else your child will need to complete homework.

Build partnerships. Maintaining open communication and partnering with your student’s teacher is key to a successful school year. “You know your child best and your insights are helpful to us,” Vohs says. Introduce yourself to the teacher and tell her the best ways she can contact you. In turn, remember that teachers care about their students’ best interests. Vohs speaks for many of her colleagues when she says: “I hope parents will trust me to make the best possible decisions for their child while he is with me.” Get involved. Help your children start seeing school as an extension of their home life by volunteering periodically. Most kids get a kick out of seeing their parents during the school day, whether they volunteer in the cafeteria, library or the classroom. Unable to volunteer at school? Ask the teacher what you can do to help from home. v Read How to Volunteer at School without Burning Out: www .SanDiegoFamily.com/resources/ education-directory/1853.

Teen Life
Cecilia Wei
5 Tips for Freshmen
Get involved at school. Being a new student at any school can be tough, especially high school. Although it may be challenging at first, I highly encourage you to participate in your school’s activities. There are clubs and events that suit many interests (my high school even has a Quidditch Club!). If you’re afraid of being judged or there is an inner voice holding you back, ignore it—get out there and get involved.
From one high school student to another
Dear New High School Student, Congratulations — you are now in high school! A new and exciting chapter full of adventure and achievement is beginning. Even though high school is often considered “the best four years of your life”, it often includes adversity and difficult times. That is why I am writing this letter: to share what I wish I knew in my first year of high school. You come first. No matter how busy your life gets, it is crucial that you take care of yourself. Get enough sleep, eat right and exercise daily to help maintain a healthy body and mind. Take it from someone who learned the hard way and missed three months of school. You come first.
Make time for family and friends. I understand that school and extracurricular activities take up most of the hours in your day. Homework, studying and projects are really time consuming! But socializing and hanging out with friends and family are important, too. You are a teenager, so enjoy life! Take a break and go to the movies—it’s a great way to relieve stress and take your mind off school, so when you get back to work, you’re ready. Don’t procrastinate. You have probably heard this a million times from teachers and parents, but this piece of advice is invaluable. Not only is there more homework in high school, there is less time to complete it. Don’t leave homework and projects until the last minute. As a result, you’ll be less stressed, have more time to make corrections and you may even get a better grade.
Written by a local dad!
Embrace change; don’t fear it. Change is happening. Your schedule, friends and learning environment are all changing—even you are changing. Learning to embrace transition will help you now and in the future. Flexibility is important in life because every day is different. Now is your time to shine. What will you do during your freshman year? Will you be a club leader? An actor in a school performance? A straight-A student? The possibilities are endless. Sure, the first year of high school can be hard, but I challenge you to make your freshman year your best year. Sincerely, Cecilia, a fellow high school student v

16 Fun Traditions for the First Day of School The years seem to pick up speed as
children get older. One minute they are starting kindergarten and in the blink of an eye, they are walking across the stage at high school graduation. Don’t let these years go by in a blur. Capture the first day of school with a tradition the kids will look forward to every year. Here are 16 suggestions—don’t try to do them all, just pick one or two!
Freeze a Memory
1
Even when your child is in elementary school, drive to your local high school before school starts and take a picture of him standing by the marquee or in front of the building. Consider having him gaze up at the school while wearing his backpack. Taken every year, this makes a great photo collage to display at his high school graduation party.
2
Before school starts, purchase a Time magazine and a People magazine to indicate what is currently in the news. Take a photo of your child with the magazine covers.
3
Buy a t-shirt from the high school spirit store in an adult size. Take a picture of your child wearing the shirt with her backpack on the ground next to her. It’s a great way to show how she and her choice of backpacks change over the years.
4
Pose your student standing next to mom or dad in front of the house. Bring enough books for your child to stand on until he is as tall as his parent. As the years go by and your child grows, the child will need fewer books to stand on. In his high school pictures, mom might be the one standing on the books!
Make a Time Capsule It’s never too late to make a time capsule. Decorate a box with a lid and store it away with the other special items in the garage. Here are things to add each year:

Food for Thought
6
The night before school starts, bake a round loaf of bread and place a clean penny in the dough before it bakes. Before dinner, have all the kids hold on to the bread and break off a piece. The one who gets the penny will have extra good luck this school year.

Start the day with a special breakfast. Choose a traditional breakfast of eggs and toast, whip up a smoothie for a light and healthy meal or lighten the mood with something fun like cookie cutter pancakes with whipped cream.
8
Let your kids choose their backto-school lunch. Go beyond the sandwich to find yogurt parfaits, fruit pizza or ham and cheese kabobs. Don’t forget a note from mom and a Hershey’s kiss.
9
When the kids get home, offer a special afterschool snack like an ice cream sundae bar or colorful fruit trifle to enjoy while they tell you about the new teacher and classes.
Watch them Grow
10
On the first day of school, measure your child from head to toe with a piece of string cut to his height. Put the string in an envelope and mark it with the date. At the end of the year, measure him again and see how much he grew this year.

Kind of a Big Deal:
Raising Kind Kids Want to raise happier, more successful kids? Kindness counts.
Researchers from University of British Columbia and University of California Riverside found that performing three acts of kindness each week improved grade-schoolers’ happiness, satisfaction and popularity with peers. Kinder kids report better self-esteem and well-being, and kindness-training programs have shown to decrease bullying in schools. Read on for strategies to help you raise kids who show and share kindness.
Empathy Training (ages 1–5) Though toddlers can seem patently unkind—sometimes biting, hitting and grabbing toys with abandon—parents should understand that tots don’t harbor unkind motivations, says Allison Lee-Shaner, a licensed family therapist. Toddlers are still developing a sense of empathy—or the understanding of how their actions impact others—and seemingly unkind acts are usually ways to test boundaries and learn about others’ reactions. Parents can help tots foster their budding sense of empathy by modeling kind acts, and directing children to use “kind hands” and “kind words” (and demonstrating what those things look and sound like) when handling the family pet and interacting with siblings and friends. Gently redirect unkind behavior, and take a firm stance on physical acts of unkindness (like pushing or hair pulling) by briefly removing your child from the play scene.
Let it Go (ages 6–12)
Home Work (teens)
The elementary and middle school years bring more interaction with peers, and invariably, conflicts that bubble up when kids butt heads. Most school-age kids will wind up on the receiving end of words or actions that sting at some time or another. The key is teaching children not to strike back, says Chris Phelps, mother and founder of Campaign for Kindness. “To create a kinder world, we must teach children not to internalize behavior directed toward them but ‘let it go,’” she says. “My first question when a child complains about another kid is ‘Do you feel you’ve done something to deserve to be treated that way?’ If the answer is no, like it most often is, we have the ‘whose issue is it?’ conversation. Ninetynine percent of the time, the person demonstrating tacky behavior is the one with the issue.” Helping children depersonalize unkind acts keeps tempers from flaring, reducing retaliation and paving the way for kindness to take hold. (Of course, if your child is the victim of repeated unkindness or bullying behavior, engage your child’s teacher and principal right away.)
Creating a kinder home can be challenging—even seem downright impossible—with squabbling teen siblings competing for airspace. If screaming teen sibs make kindness seem unattainable, don’t give up. First, parents need to set the tone they want the family to have, says Phelps. If you don’t want siblings to yell at each other, don’t yell at them. Pick a weekly “family fun” activity to do together— this creates shared memories and conversation fodder that helps generate sibling goodwill. Consider embarking on a monthlong “kindness challenge” within the family. Define parameters for your challenge together, such as how many acts of kindness each family member will perform, whether kind acts should remain anonymous and so on. Set a family reward, like a concert or dinner out, at the end of the month when you’ll likely be a kinder, happier bunch. v Malia Jacobson is an awardwinning health and parenting journalist and mom of three.

Sarah Lyons
Does Your Child Have SPD?
A typical morning in my home
begins with the words, “My clothes hurt me. They are too loose. I need new clothes.” As a result, I begin the search for the “right” clothes for my 4-year old daughter. After much time, many tears, lots of tight hugs and a good dose of frustration, she begins her day in the same dress she wore the day before and many days prior to that. The process of getting dressed, which seems simple to most, is the biggest challenge my child faces on a daily basis. This situation is one example of what it’s like to live with a child with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD). Dana Lyons, an occupational therapist, describes it this way: “Imagine being in an environment where the noise around you is amplified to the highest level, the temperature is the coldest or hottest you have ever felt, you are wearing the most uncomfortable clothing that has ever touched your skin, and you are nauseated by a repulsive smell,” she says. “These are examples of what a child with SPD feels, but they cannot escape the symptoms. As a result, these children may respond with anger, frustration or ultimately avoid situations which may cause a breakdown.” Sensory processing is a term that refers to the way the nervous system receives messages from the senses and turns them into appropriate

motor and behavioral responses. “Everyone processes sensory input, but some people process it differently than others,” says Carrie Grosdidier, an occupational therapist. “When the processing of this information interferes with our ability to function on a day-today basis, we have a problem.” SPD can be hard to diagnose because it affects each person differently. “Any
of the five senses can be affected by being hypersensitive (over stimulated) or hyposensitive (under stimulated).” says Lyons. A hypersensitive response to sensory input may include distraction by noises that sound normal to others (flushing toilets, clanking silverware), fear of or avoidance of touch or hugs, avoidance of swings and playground equipment, and poor balance. A hyposensitive response to sensory input may include a constant need to touch people or textures, an extremely high tolerance to pain, harming other children or pets when playing (doesn’t understand own strength), fidgeting/ unable to sit still (enjoys spinning, jumping, swinging, etc.), and “thrill seeking” (can be dangerous at times). Children can have one or many of these characteristics and in varying degrees of severity. “Unfortunately, these responses are viewed by others as children behaving badly,” Lyons says. “The most important thing to understand is that children with SPD are not bad children. They are simply trying to survive in their own skin, in a world with heightened or lowered sensations. Typical punishment for ‘bad’ behavior is not optimal and can cause regression rather than progression.” continued on p. 48

Stephanie Beaudry, mom of two children with SPD, says, “When trying to explain that my son’s hyperactivity or clumsiness is due to SPD, we are told ‘it’s just his age’ but it’s because his nervous system doesn’t respond as it should in certain situations.” SPD may cause motor clumsiness, behavioral problems, anxiety, depression, or other impacts if not treated properly. SPD creates challenges for families, but there is treatment available. “We had a fabulous occupational therapist who helped my son,” says Joy Alsup, mom of four. “She gave us tools and gave him permission to figure out what worked for him and what didn’t. He has a high need for tight, long hugs and we understand that this is what helps him. It’s a huge priority for us.” With the help of an occupational therapist, kids with SPD find tools that help them balance sensory input. Activities may include swinging, wearing a weighted vest, pushing or pulling heavy objects across the room, or jumping on a trampoline. Many activities are fun and can be integrated into playtime at home. “The therapy helps their physical strengths and emotional strengths,” says Beaudry. “When my daughter first started therapy, she was extremely shy. She wouldn’t talk to children her own age when they approached her. Now, four months later, she is a social butterfly.” As a mother of a child with Sensory Processing Disorder, I would encourage others to educate themselves about SPD and begin to approach the situation from the child’s perspective. Parents can then begin to use tools to adjust their environment and celebrate as their child meets goals and overcomes challenges. It takes a lot of patience, persistence and love to parent children with SPD, but when they feel accepted and supported, they can work through their struggles, and thrive in school and at home. v Sarah Lyons is a wife and mother of six. The inspiration for this article came from her daughter, Grace, who was diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder two years ago.
