“Hunkering Down” in April What an interesting time—normally we are
making big plans for Easter, but instead parents are scrambling to navigate school closures and coronavirus. For the first time in the history of Family Magazine, we have no calendar of events this month, in light of the CDC’s recommendation to limit exposure to others. Our advertisers are getting creative about how to serve the public. Be sure to check individual websites for updated information. Support as many local businesses as possible. As you’re spending time at home with the kids, take time to think about summer camp planning. Look over the camp/ summer program advertisers in this issue and be sure to “visit” our Virtual Camp Fair together, launching April 15. Look on page 26 for ideas to keep our earth healthy. One of the ideas is composting. I “vermicompost” with a worm garden. I started several years ago to prevent throwing away fruit and vegetable scraps. I placed dirt in two plastic bins with lids, along with red worms, which eat the scraps and produce worm castings. I freeze scraps in a bag, which I defrost weekly to feed the worms. They don’t eat citrus, but love banana peels. It is a beneficial fertilizer for our garden and helps the landfill. Talk to Kids About Coronavirus Parents play a critical role in helping children feel safe when many people are concerned about coronavirus (COVID-19). Be mindful of your own anxiety—and of exposing the kids to “too much” news. It is up to parents to talk to kids in a way that is honest, accurate and minimizes fear. Find out what they have heard about coronavirus from peers and friends, and provide assurance, if needed. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides guidance to help adults navigate these conversations with kids. Science Float or Sink Game Gather several small items such as balls, toothpicks, small toys, pinecones, rocks and leaves. Make predictions about which items will float and which will sink. Fill a large bowl with water so kids can compare two items at a time and record their findings.
Leaf Rubbing

Toothpick Engineering Add a toothpick to the center of gumdrop candies (or mini marshmallows) and connect them to each other to create threedimensional edible structures that span in all directions.
Paper Airplanes Kids become young engineers when they make and fly paper airplanes. Alter nose shape, design and add paperclip weights, then compete to see which ones fly the farthest.

Have young scientists gather crayons, markers, paper and leaves in various sizes (that are already on the ground). Place leaves under paper and lightly color in the same direction over the surface. Kids will be surprised to see leaf skeletons appear. Make vegetation creatures by drawing facial features and body parts.
Create wearable art using scissors, string, yarn, glue, and colored recycled papers such as old greeting cards and magazine pages. Make beads by cutting paper into long narrow strips, rolling them tightly and securing with glue. String beads into a unique bracelet or necklace.
Technology

Media camps offer creative skills and unique experiences
Is there anything more exciting than
a child’s wild, ambitious dreams? My 6-year-old wants to be a screenwriter when he grows up. He speaks so enthusiastically about his favorite shows that I feel compelled to assure people we really do limit screen time, take him outdoors and provide real-life experiences. For a little guy, he offers unusually insightful analysis of the movies we watch as a family. He refers to interesting elements in the films as “choices” and loves to point out plot twists. I thought it would be years before my son could pursue his passion and learn the finer points of filmmaking. Yet, he didn’t even finish winter film camp before asking about the spring session. Camps that teach digital media skills expose kids to the awesome benefits

of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics). We know that STEAM encourages creative thinking, builds appreciation for the arts and provides new models for collaborative problem-solving. Digital media camps promote skills that kids are really excited to learn— like filmmaking, music production and photography. Read on for a closer look at the camp my son attended, along with other great arts and technology camps in San Diego.
Filmmaking The most impressive thing about Youth Media & Tech Camp at Media Arts Center is the abundant freedom offered to even the youngest participants. My son attended a winter session, where he and his fellow campers produced two short films from start to finish. The kids did everything! Story ideas
were developed entirely by campers. The instructor was there to coach them on the process—collaborative brainstorming, storyboarding and writing—but left the heaviest creative lifting to them. The kids took turns acting out the script and operating the camera. When it was time to edit, they used iMovie with minimal assistance, adding their own visual and sound effects along the way. My son said his favorite part of camp was learning to use a green screen. I’m impressed that he had such a cool opportunity. At the end of the session, campers treated families to a premiere at the onsite theater, Digital Gym Cinema. Everyone was so proud. I can’t recommend this program enough. Digital Art Digital Media Academy offers a variety of arts and technology summer camps located on the UCSD campus. At Adventures in Animation Camp, kids bring their drawings to life with the same techniques and software used by industry professionals. Music Production camp teaches campers to arrange their own tracks while becoming immersed in the world of composition and sound design. Additional camps cover exciting topics like digital photography and graphic design. Many instructors are industry professionals who started out as

Photography Young shutterbugs (and teens) enjoy the many hands-on Photography Camps at Outside the Lens. Day camps and travel trips are offered at exciting locations around San Diego County. also covered and include claymation and stop-motion techniques. Each session ends with an exhibition and students take home a portfolio of their work. often hear, “Because it’s FUN!” For many families, camp is an experience where kids have a great time doing things they don’t usually get to do. But benefits of camp reach well beyond learning to surf or petting a dolphin. In a five-year independent study sponsored by the American Camp Association, researchers surveyed past campers, parents and staff about the impact of camp on their lives. Overall, the findings show that kids who attend camp are more optimistic, self-confident, responsible, joyful, and learn skills to relate better to others. Survey participants who were ages 18–25 and attended camp as kids reported that what they learned at camp is helping them thrive in school and the workplace. At a time when learning social skills isn’t as straightforward as it once was, camp helps kids develop relationship skills that have lifelong benefits. Parents don’t have to wait for kids to attend camp to begin creating a transformational culture at home. Here’s how to use camp strategies to benefit your family year-round.
Talk about what matters most. At camp, kids learn how to
communicate what’s important to them and to listen to what’s important to others. Talk about your family values and what your child hopes to gain from camp. What character traits would you like your child to learn? When choosing a camp, ask the questions: Philosophically, does the culture of the camp resonate with our family? Do the values taught match ours? By sharing values that matter most to your family, you’ll help kids understand why they’re at camp (beyond the fun) and help them feel comfortable when they get there.
Work as a team. While exploring
camp options together, utilize the team mentality taught at camp. Team building grows confidence and competence as kids participate in activities with support and encouragement of teammates. At home, think of your family as a team – a group linked by a common purpose, working together to create connection and a sense of belonging. Some camps are skills-based and individual-focused. Others are group focused with a variety of activities to try. Even if a skills-based camp is preferred, look for camps that also support social learning and growth. Ideally, camp will help children improve skills and discover new ones while gaining confidence from learning how to be a good friend and teammate. reflection. What do I really want for this milestone birthday? I’m asking friends and family to do something that helps keep the Earth green. Here are things your family can do that make a big impact this Earth Day (April 22) and beyond.
We make a lot of food choices each day. Collectively, those choices make a big difference in helping the planet. According to nonprofit Project Drawdown, a research-based organization that finds and ranks climate change solutions, eating less meat and reducing food waste are two top ways that individuals can make a lasting impact.
Reduce Food Waste • Meal plan and make a shopping list to reduce impulse buys. • Eat leftovers for lunch. Why is it important? According to Natural Resources Defense Council, 40 percent of food in the U.S. is wasted.
Eat Less Meat • Commit to “Meatless Mondays” (or any day of the week). Soup, chili, tacos, pasta and more can be made without meat. • Try a “flexitarian” diet, which is mostly vegetarian, but occasionally includes meat. Why is it important? A recent study published in Science Magazine reveals that growing plant protein has a lesser impact on the environment than meat and dairy production. Need ideas on how to try a flexitarian diet? • Shop farmers markets. Get to know locals who grow without pesticides.

Improve Kitchen Habits “It is estimated that each Californian generates 0.76 lbs. of compostable food waste every day,” says Sarah BoltwalaMesina, executive director of nonprofit, Inika Small Earth. “Over the course of the year each of us has the ability to send 277 pounds of nutrients back into the soil instead of into a landfill where they sit around emitting methane. We can do this by simply setting up a kitchen scrap collection container on our kitchen counter.” • Try composting. Use a countertop composter or drop off table scraps at a neighborhood Food2Soil program sponsored by Inika. • Reduce or eliminate single use items such as plastic bags, paper napkins or paper towels. on Pak knew there was a more effective way to help children who struggle academically, socially, or behaviorally – namely, through a coordinated, child-centric effort. As the father of a son with Down Syndrome, an uncle to a child with Asperger’s Syndrome, and a friend to parents with struggling children, Jon paired his personal experience with his passion for helping people and his entrepreneurial roots to open the doors of Brain Balance of San Diego. Brain Balance serves struggling children with an integrative and holistic approach. “We’re bringing a much needed nonmedical solution to a widespread problem affecting families of all walks of life,” Jon said. Through a personalized combination of in-center sessions, at-home activities, and a nutrition program, Brain Balance addresses the individual gaps for each child to improve focus, behavior, social skills, sensory processing, and academics. “The team cares deeply about our students and, as each child is different, we discuss strategies for each one of them to create the biggest impact possible,” Jon acknowledged. Backed by a program developed and continuously improved by research that has been proven successful on over 30,000 children, the Brain Balance team creates individualized
plans to strengthen the child’s weaker areas including sensory engagement, core muscle strength and coordination, eye tracking, audito processing, academic guidance, and nutrition guidance. “Gaps and holes in development result in gaps and holes in behavior, academics, socialization, and confidence,” Jon explained. “Our program focuses on improving the foundation of development and brain connectivity rather than masking or coping with symptoms.” Those symptoms can range from lack of focus and meltdowns to lack of confidence and social struggles.
