Spring and summer camps are a great way to get kids into a different environment, away from screens (unless they’re attending computer camps), and meeting new friends. Many kids come out of their shell at camp or find new interests and hobbies. On page 16 is an article that highlights unexpected benefits of attending camp. Editor’s Picks People Are Wild by Margaux Meganck is a beautifully illustrated, sweet story with an inventive perspective. Children learn to have compassion for all living things as they observe people through the eyes of animals. So clever! Once Upon a Forest by local author/ illustrator Pam Fong is a heartwarming tale about a little marmot who is determined to save her forest home from the aftermath of a fire. Gorgeous illustrations (and no words) leave room for imagination, but little ones will certainly develop an appreciation for animals and the earth with this story. If I Were a Tree by local author Andrea Zimmerman is a wonderful story about siblings who journey into the woods to explore and appreciate nature and the world around them. Engaging, rhyming text makes this an excellent read-aloud book.

Questions to Ask When
Choosing a Camp
When parents and kids narrow down their list of camps to
choose from, the next step is to get more information. Be sure to read each camp’s website (look for FAQs) before contacting them; camp directors and leaders appreciate parents who have “done their homework” before reaching out. If you still have questions after reading the information available on their sites, then by all means, send an email or make a phone call. Here is a list of questions to consider when choosing camp programs.
Staff
Health
• What training and experience do counselors and staff have?
• Is there a camp nurse and CPR/first-aid certified staff on premises at all times?
• How does staff handle kids who are homesick? • Is camp staffed by teens, adults or both? • Is staff trained to look for kids who are having a hard time making friends? • Does staff teach (and use) the buddy system?
Program • What is the counselor-tocamper ratio? • Are kids divided by age or ability? • Is your program licensed by the state or accredited by the American Camp Association? • Does the camp schedule include field trips? If so, how are kids transported? • If camp includes swimming, how are swim skills tested and monitored? • Are lunches and/or snacks provided? • How often are the facilities cleaned? • Do you have references from families who have attended camp before?

Unexpected benefits of summer camp One of a parent’s biggest joys and
responsibilities is supporting the natural interests of their children and encouraging growth. Summer is the perfect time to develop new skills, and now is the time to plan for summer camps, which offer a variety of engaging activities. Observe your child’s strengths and interests to help identify her values, then help choose camps that stretch her and watch her reap rewards beyond expectations.
How to Help Kids Identify their Values • Pay attention: Look for times when your child finds her “flow” and loses herself in a particularly enjoyable activity. • Speak up: When you identify your child’s strengths or interests, compliment her focus and ask questions to learn what she loves most about the activities. • Enlist a mentor: Kids don’t always

respond best to parents. Ask a family friend who shares your child’s interests to talk with her and encourage her abilities. • Utilize resources: “Librarians are unsung community resources and an amazing entryway into the creative world,” says Alonso Nunez, Executive Director and lead instructor at Little Fish Comic Book Studio. He suggests not only asking librarians to help find books that enhance children’s interests, but also inquiring about workshops or events that can develop skills. • Allow tweens and teens to take the lead when deciding on meaningful camps. In her book, Fourteen Talks Before Age Fourteen, author Michelle Icard makes the case that parents of tweens can be most effective by acting as “assistant managers,” supporting children in the decisionmaking process by listening carefully and providing feedback, rather than making decisions for them.
Choose Camps that Stretch Kids Growth happens when people step beyond their comfort zones. Science proves this is especially true for ages 10 and up, when the brain is malleable and neurons and synapses proliferate. Laurence Steinberg, author of Age of Opportunity: Lessons from the New Science of Adolescence, notes, “The increase in novelty seeking is a way of making sure that individuals venture out into the world at a time when the brain is primed to learn from new experiences.” So, what can parents do? • Encourage kids to attend camps that offer new activities to help them grow in unexpected ways. • Enlist a friend with shared interest to help ease jitters. “My participation in Girl Scouts horse camps, San Diego Zoo camps and Living Coast Discovery Center ‘keeper camp’ increased my eagerness to learn more,” says Sydney, a senior at Patrick Henry High School.

Camp can create a dynamic to build upon. When John of Del Cerro attended Mesa Rim’s climbing camp with a friend, he found a new love. “I quickly grew to enjoy the sport and instantly wanted to invest in it.” After camp, he joined a local climbing team. “My coaches taught me great values that I will use for my whole life, no matter the sport,” says John. “They taught me that hard work and effort pay off, and that you can have fun while working hard.” Little campers gain social skills. Avery, now age 14, is an avid actor with San Diego Junior Theatre. She took her first Junior Theatre camp at age 5 and reflects that it gave her the opportunity to take risks. By participating in the fun, she overcame her initial shyness and came out of her shell.
Expect Growth According to Nunez, one unexpected skill that Little Fish Comic camps help develop is letting go of perfectionism and being comfortable making mistakes. “At Little Fish, we experiment with ideas to find our own stories,” he says. “The eraser is a necessary part of that process.” Kris Mooney, Director of Education at Fleet Science Center, agrees. The Fleet’s learning camps help kids let go of apprehension and self-doubt. According to Mooney, many kids

A well-chosen camp that sparks love for an activity creates confidence, helps kids adopt a growth mindset and can even lead to potential career choice. “Living Coast Discovery Center introduced me to a world that is difficult to get extensive experience in—animal care,” says Sydney, who plans to major in zoology in college. “Between preparing food and cleaning raptor habitats, their camp provided opportunities to expand my interests and learn about a professional facility’s care for animals like my pets at home—reptiles and amphibians. The camp also connected me with people experienced in the field who could contribute to my career. Get Creative Make art outside. Nature is filled with beauty that sparks creativity. Why not enjoy being creative while spending time outside! Here are project ideas: • Let children decorate the sidewalk or patio with chalk. • Put art supplies such as an easel, paint and paint brushes in the backyard or balcony and encourage kids to paint or draw flowers, trees and animals they see (or imagine). • Help children collect nature items from the ground like leaves, sticks and pinecones. Provide materials such as paper, cardboard, glue, string and crayons to make nature artwork. It is of paramount importance that parents help instill a love for the natural world in children. Why? Because we as a society need at least some of them to grow up to become responsible stewards of the Earth. In order to establish an appreciation for something, we need to spend time with it—or in this case, IN it— the outdoors. In the spirit of Earth Day, let’s help kids get connected to nature so they learn to love, appreciate and develop respect for the world around them. Spending time in nature is beneficial to everyone’s health and well-being. Research studies in recent years have shown that it improves focus and attention, and reduces blood pressure, heart rate and muscle tension. For kids especially, spending time in nature calms them, reducing feelings of stress,

anxiety and anger, and provides a break from staring at screens, which takes a toll on physical and mental health. If kids are athletic, have them play outdoor sports. Go Exploring There are countless places in San Diego County to explore the outdoors: parks, lagoons, farms, nature centers, hiking trails, botanical and sculpture gardens, fountains, rivers and lakes. With 70 miles of coastline, consider heading to a nearby beach to enjoy sights and sounds of the waves. Even a quick walk around your neighborhood can lead to nature-filled moments.

Do Citizen Science Projects Kids love being scientists and discovering new things outdoors. Suggest they collect rocks, look for bugs, or study the night stars. Citizen Science Month is in April. Sign up to do citizen science projects, volunteering to collect scientific data. Kids gain unique STEM experience as they directly help the scientific community. Every time my son Taylor had a big
project due, I knew we were in for another tug of war. While I waved Postit notes and enthusiastically explained how to break the project down into bite-sized chunks, his blank stare told me my “can-do” attitude was not part of his process. Instead, he would quietly close himself in his room for days while I worried he was doing nothing toward meeting the deadline. My offers to help and questions about his progress were met with monosyllables that did little to calm my fear that he didn’t care enough to apply himself. Or worse yet, that I had failed to teach him the fundamentals of responsibility, diligence and hard work. Then he’d pull it off. Not just completing the bare bones of the assignment, but often earning a teacher’s comment of “Great work!” alongside an

A or B grade. Taylor would beam with pride while I scratched my head and wondered, “How is this possible?”
It was a parenting mystery that the Enneagram helped solve. The Enneagram is an assessment tool that identifies nine distinct personality types based on internal motivation and how we relate to others. Naturally, when internal motivations differ, the ways we behave, communicate, and tackle life (and big projects) differ as well. Knowing your Enneagram personality type makes parenting less puzzling by providing insight into why you do the things you do. It can make you a better parent and help you
nurture and grow your child’s unique personality. How does knowing your personality type help with parenting? Enneagram personality type is a lens through which parents see kids – it colors experiences and what they believe to be true about their children. Each type has preferences that bias parents toward certain behaviors, habits and ways of seeing and responding to the world. Recognizing these preferences gives parents the power to respond (rather than react) to behaviors and choices different from their own and helps explain how sometimes there’s a disconnect in communication. Type 3 – Achievers are motivated by being productive, successful and avoiding failure. They serve as great role models for self-confidence and work ethic. These parents struggle to spend time with their kids while wanting to get more work done and may put too much pressure on kids to succeed. Type 4 – Romantics are motivated to experience and fully express their feelings. They value authenticity and encourage kids to become who they really are. Their challenge is helping kids manage big emotions without getting overwhelmed and remembering that sometimes it’s OK for kids to want to fit in. Type 5 – Observers are motivated by knowing and understanding everything necessary to be self-sufficient and prepared for any situation. Their love for researching, learning and teaching is a great match for a child’s curiosity. Their challenge is to balance the intellectual growth they love with the emotional growth kids also need. Type 6 – Questioners are motivated by the need for security. These are diligent and dependable parents who make sure kids feel safe and supported. They sometimes struggle with excessive worry and can be overly protective or reluctant to let kids take normal and necessary risks. Type 7 – Enthusiasts are motivated by the need to be happy and avoid pain and suffering. Their optimism and enthusiasm inspire kids to dream big and welcome adventure. They may find dealing with mundane parts of life like sticking to routines challenging and sometimes get too busy with their activities to be fully present and attentive. Type 8 – Challengers are motivated by being self-reliant and strong. They encourage kids to grow into courageous leaders and aren’t afraid to let them try and fail. Their strength and energy can sometimes feel demanding or rigid to kids who need to balance strength and resilience with rest and emotional connection.

Type 9 – Peacemakers are motivated by harmony and avoiding conflict. Their warmth and acceptance make children feel loved just as they are. They may have a hard time saying no or following through with consequences. Their challenge is to stay engaged even when it requires conflict. Grow greater understanding with the Enneagram. Understanding our different internal motivations helped me see that my son wasn’t procrastinating or irresponsible. He was simply processing as his Type 5 (Observer) personality required. He was motivated to master the material before completing the assignment, while my Type 3 (Achiever) approach would have been to create a dazzling presentation first, then worry about content later. While I worried that he wasn’t producing, Taylor was learning and preparing the material. This discovery changed our relationship and how we communicate because it helped me see Taylor as the committed and caring person he is. Adding the Enneagram to your parenting toolbox can help eliminate stress, disagreements and misunderstandings. It creates stronger bonds by deepening respect for differences and helps parents grow kids into the best versions of themselves instead of striving to be more like Mom or Dad.
