Home ALONE? by Anna Mendenhall, MD

On school days, one in three adolescents comes home to a house with no adult present. Child experts generally agree that 11 or 12 years old is the age at which parents can consider allowing their boy or girl to become a so-called “latchkey kid”, provided that it is during the day and for no more than approximately three hours. Before you do, there are several factors to take into account: • Is the neighborhood generally a safe one? • Are there neighbors around during the day who could lend a hand in an emergency? • The most crucial question is whether or not your son or daughter is ready to handle this major responsibility. Studies have found that latchkey kids exhibit higher levels of fear, stress, loneliness and boredom, miss more days of school and have lower academic scores. They are also more likely to experiment with sex and drugs than kids who aren’t left by themselves for long periods of time. Try to contact your teenager on afternoons when s/he’s home alone, even if it’s only a brief conversation to find out how his/ her day went. Kids should always be able to reach you or another responsible adult either by phone, fax or e-mail.

Before you let your child stay home alone, they should be able to perform the following routine household tasks: • Knows how to properly answer the telephone. Kids should never disclose to an unfamiliar voice that they are alone. An appropriate response would be: “My mom’s not able to come to the phone right now; can I take your number and have her get back to you”? • Knows what to do and who to call in the event of a fire, a medical crisis, a suspicious stranger at the door or other emergency situations. Coach kids on how to respond to each of these situations. Conspicuously post emergency telephone numbers on the refrigerator and by every phone in the house or make sure that they are programmed into cell phones. • Be sure they know at least two escape routes from the home. • Knows where to find the first-aid supplies and how to handle basic first aid (or whom to call) for cuts, scrapes, nosebleeds, minor burns and so on. • Knows how to switch on a shutoff electrical circuit breaker or replace fuse. • Knows where to find the shutoff valves on all toilets and sinks, as well as the main water valve, in the event of a leak or overflowing toilet. • Knows how to put out a cooking fire. Keep baking soda, flour or a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. Teens should know never to throw water on a grease fire.

• Decide on the rules and responsibilities during the hours your son or daughter is home without supervision. If you put them down in writing, there won’t be any confusion/debate. • Is she allowed to have friends over? How many? Same-sex friends only? • Under what circumstances is she to answer the door? Or is she not to open the door at all? • Which activities are off-limits? TV, computer, chat rooms, etc. Are there channels s/he is prohibited from watching? Parents who are not home in the afternoon might want to investigate purchasing parental-control tools for TVs and for computers linked to the Internet. Though by no means infallible, the “V-chip” and Web filters do enable you to choose the types of programming that come into your home. • Is s/he expected to complete her homework and/or certain chores before you get home? • If you’re out for the evening or away, leave your itinerary, including when you expect to be home.

Mom, Dad: You’re late! If you’re going to be home late, let your child know. Kids worry too!

• Knows how to contact you in an emergency. • Knows the names of her pediatrician, the preferred hospital and the family medicalinsurance plan and type of coverage.

Summer Isn’t Over Yet!

Families

Thank you to everyone who submitted photos of their families out having fun this summer! We received more photos than we had space for, so be sure to visit www.sandiegofamily.com/resources/san-diego-heroes to see them all.

We are still celebrating summer, so make the best of it

before school starts. If you haven’t gone to a splash pad yet, get your swimsuits or shorts and let the kids have a great, fun afternoon. Check out four local spraygrounds on page 16. Take lunch along and have a picnic in the park. Getting out in the fresh air gives your family a chance to relax before school starts. If you know about other fun splash pads, email the name, location and what you like about it to editor@sandiegofamily.com. If you are still undecided about where your kids are going to school, check out the school advertisements in this issue and learn about their academic programs. Find more information at www.sandiegofamily.com under Resources/ Education directory. We are so happy the kids will be able to personally attend school this year! Is your child entering kindergarten or starting a new school? Read “Ask Ms. Lydia” on page 14 for tips about addressing a child’s anxious feelings. August 20 is National Lemonade Day, but every summer day should include lemon treats in my opinion. The next thing I make will be Lemon Bar Cookies from Jackie Bruchez, Oceanside’s Seaside Baker. Turn to page 30 for those and more. Enjoy the rest of summer and have fun with your kids! Make memories and traditions. Hug them. They grow up way too fast.

Ask Ms. Lydia Dear Ms. LydiaMy son just turned 5 and starts kindergarten soon. He has always been an anxious, shy child. He attended preschool, but we enrolled him for the minimum amount of time because he resisted going to school. When COVID hit, he was thrilled to stay home! We have been talking to him about kindergarten and he is already getting stressed out. Do you have any advice? -Worried in Chula Vista

The past year has increased everyone’s anxiety level, so it’s understandable that your son is expressing concern. Starting a new school is a big adjustment even under normal circumstances. Although your son has always been an anxious child, it is important to consider all possible contributing factors before assigning the cause of stress to school. Have you had the news on when your son was within earshot? The news has been pretty scary over the last year. Have there been any changes in your family or household (death, divorce)? Have parents or caregivers altered between working at home and at the office? Instability in the household (actual or perceived) can raise a child’s anxiety as well. Identifying any external stressors will help when talking to your son about his feelings. And it will help determine if outside support is needed. If you establish that his anxiety is, indeed, related only to starting kindergarten, ease his stress with these tips: Establish a goodbye routine. Say goodbye at the same location each day and develop a ritual. For example, “Give Mommy (or Daddy) a hug and then I will blow a kiss to keep in your pocket.” Predictability is a key to reducing stress. When a child can rely on a routine, he has some control over it.

We’ve reintroduced

Visit the school ahead of time to give your son the “lay of the land.” Many schools do a kindergarten playdate or some type of get together before school starts. If his school offers this, be sure to attend so you can both meet the teacher and some new friends. If your school does not do this, make an appointment to visit the classroom (if there’s time) or visit the campus and playground so he can visualize where he will be during the day. Reach out on a neighborhood community forum (Nextdoor, Facebook, etc.) to see if there are other families starting kindergarten at the same school who would like to meet at the park before school starts. Even meeting a couple other kids gives him a familiar face to look for on the first day. Don’t talk about starting school too far in advance; it only prolongs the anxiety. A few weeks before, start building it up as a positive experience. Keep your own anxiety in check. Children are very intuitive; if you are anxious about your son starting school, it will only increase his stress level. If you are observing signs that his anxiety is beyond first-day jitters (stomachaches, headaches, nightmares, excessive crying, clinginess that interferes with normal activities, bedwetting), speak to your family pediatrician.

SAN DIEGO

s d a P Splash s d n u o r g and Spray

Sandra Page

Summer is in full swing and there’s no better way to beat San Diego heat than playing at splash pads and spraygrounds around the county. From Eastlake to San Marcos, it’s easy to plan a soaking-wet fun time! Check out these parks and let your littles partake in some cool water splashing this summer. Finish the day with an ice cream cone or snowcone. Read “Frozen Treats to Beat the Heat” for San Diego’s favorite ice cream shops: www.sandiegofamily.com/things-to-do/out-about/ice-cream-shops.

Santee Lakes

Santee Lakes 9310 Fanita Parkway Santee

In between Lake 1 and Lake 2 at this huge recreational preserve is a bright, colorful (and fenced in) sprayground. It’s small, but lots of fun with a classic bucket dump and spraying arches to run through. Around the edges of the play area are benches to sit and watch your kids play. The lake views make you feel like you’ve been transported to a different place. Good to Know:

• Open year-round during normal park operating hours. • Parking: $4 on weekdays, $6 on weekends and holidays. • Santee Lakes requires a wristband for the sprayground, which can be purchased when you pull in to park. Weekdays, $2; weekends, $3. Insider Tip: When you come into park, buy duck food for $1. The sprayground is right on the lake, and feeding the ducks is a great way to get kids out of the fountains (eventually).

16 • SanDiegofamily.com • August 2021

SPRAYGROUND TIPS • Water, puddles and splashing, oh my! Splash pads and spraygrounds are an absolute blast, but like anything else, a few simple guidelines help ensure everyone has a great time. • Grippy shoes for the win. Sprayground “floors” can get slippery, so put grippy water shoes on your kids and remind them not to run too fast. • Leave snacks behind. Food in the water makes a yucky mess. • Diapers, please. Children who aren’t completely potty trained must wear a swim diaper when playing in the water. • Don’t drink the water—most spraygrounds use recirculated water. • Dress the part. Even if you don’t plan on getting wet with the kids, you probably will!

Waterfront Park 1600 Pacific Highway Downtown San Diego

With downtown views and plenty of space to play, Waterfront Park is great for large group meetups or a birthday party. The fountains splash into reflecting pools on either side of the County Administration Center. Although the park is on a relatively busy street, the expansive grass area leading to the fountains provides peace of mind. Be sure to bring blankets for the grass and an umbrella for shade. If you (aka your little ones) get lucky, an ice cream cart may even come by. Good to Know:

Mountain Hawk Park 1475 Lake Crest Dr. Chula Vista

Hidden in the Eastlake Vistas community of Eastlake, Mountain Hawk Park has show-stopping mountain and lake views, walking and hiking trails, and of course, the pièce de résistance: a circular sprayground for kids of all ages. A dozen water features turn on and off, leading to the inevitable (and allimportant) “Ahhh!” when the water shoots up. It’s entertaining to watch little ones anticipate which ones turn on next. The water features are simple—no bright colored plastic here—but the minimalism doesn’t curb the fun. The path that goes around the splash pad (and playground) is perfect for stroller walks while older kids engage in water play. Good to Know:

• Open April 1–Nov. 1 • Parking available in front of the sprayground. Insider Tip: Bring a pop-up for sun protection if you plan to play all day. The park has a few shady trees, but families grab those spots quickly on sunny days.

Next to the splash pad is a beautiful shaded playground with space for kids to play, climb and explore. Good to Know:

• Open year-round. • Park in the lot at the base of the park; it’s a short walk to the splash pad. Insider Tip: Pack a lunch. With the playground, splash pad, and awesome snake climbing structure, you’ll be here a while. Plan ahead and have a Plan B. If you’re driving a distance to a sprayground, try to confirm they’re open. Sometimes the fountains are under maintenance; it’s disappointing to discover there’s no water to play in. v All photos (except where noted) provided by Sandra Page, who can be found adventuring on IG @playdatesandpints.

Let’s Get

Organized Can you smell those freshly

sharpened pencils, San Diego? It’s finally time to go back to school! Check out these tips to help your family get organized for a light and breezy transition into the new academic year.

Label it According to North Park resident and Professional Organizer Ryen Toft, Founder of Simply Luxe Organizing, labeling is a highly effective psychological hack. It can train the brain to maintain organization. Creating a great system in the bedrooms and common areas will reduce stress during the back-to-school transition. “Labels take the thinking and decision-making processes out of tidying up and deciding where things should go, allowing you to focus on other more important things in your day,” she says. Toft says parents should encourage kids to participate in household tidying. “If they are more visual or can’t read yet, add photos to your labels so they can still get the system down.”

KonMari the Homework Spot Make sure the kids’ homework space has a completely different energy from their distance learning space. I love the KonMari method (developed by Marie Kondo), because it focuses on what’s worth keeping, rather than what needs to go. Start by clearing everything off the desk. Strip the bulletin board clean and empty drawers. Next, hold items

22 • SanDiegofamily.com • August 2021

one-by-one and ask whether they spark joy or fill a need. Anything that doesn’t pass the test gets a quick, sincere “thank you” as you toss or donate it. When this process is complete, only items that are truly needed and appreciated will remain. Organize these special things in a way that makes everyone feel calm and inspired.

Declutter Art Supplies After a summer of wild and stunning creative art projects, there are bound to be some dried-up markers in the stash. Enlist the kids to help find them. First, remove the obviously broken items. Then, run a quality check on everything else. Have the kids make rainbow pages with rows of different colors, so they can find and remove unusable markers, highlighters or pens. Once the big sort is complete, make a list of supplies that need replacing. If an organizer would be helpful at this stage, check out the super affordable Tjena desk organizer from Ikea. It’s made of recycled paperboard, so kids can add their own colorful design. Toft recommends organizing in ROYGBIV order (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet).

Time to go back to school

“This color coordination is aesthetically pleasing in any area of the house and immediately elevates a space to look more put together,” she says. “Your kids will recognize the rainbow pattern and want to contribute as well, teaching them about colors and sorting along the way!”

Led by an engaging team of instructors, your future scientists and engineers will enjoy age appropriate hands-on science experiments, fun games, technology, arts & craft, and more! They will meet guest scientists and learn about STEM careers.

Consider Backpacks Nothing kills the vibe in your living space faster than a pile of backpacks. Make sure each child’s schoolbag has its own hook, shelf or cubby to return to at home. Since kids like to unload their stuff the moment they cross the threshold, it’s best to pick a spot as close to that door as possible. We originally thought backpacks should live in the closet by the front door, but my kids enter through the kitchen. Packs spend less time on the floor now that we’ve installed hooks in the pantry. Go with what’s easy and makes sense!

Check Lunch Containers Now is a good time to make sure all the lunch boxes, water bottles and reusable snack bags are kept in the same spot. It’ll make lunch prep much easier. Next, do a quick quality check on items that have gone unused for a while. If everything looks good, take a moment to label each item with your child’s name. A Sharpie will do the job or find stylish custom labels at www.minted.com or www.mabelslabels.com. cont. on p.25

Refresh the Wardrobe Take a good look in the kids’ closets and remove anything damaged or dingy, keeping an eye out for quality items that don’t get much use. “As your kids grow out of clothes or phase out of different interests, there will be plenty of items that can be donated,” Toft says. “Empower your kids to be a part of the donation process, inviting them to spread joy to other children.” Note if the kids need additional items, including socks and underwear. If your kids are like mine and wear flip-flops all summer, check that their favorite sneakers still fit. No time to shop? A personalized styling from www.StitchFix.com/kids is a painless way to fill gaps in a child’s wardrobe. Tell your online stylist which sizes and styles you need, then receive a box in the mail with 8-12 items to try on. Keep what they love and send the rest back!

Update Your Command Center Parents need an organized space for the family. A home command center should include a monthly family calendar as well as an “inbox” or clip where kids can leave items requiring parent attention. Consider keeping the chore chart and weekly meal schedule in this area as well. I keep a running grocery list in this area, where the family can add foods we need on the next shopping trip. They rarely remember to do this, but I remain hopeful!
