Lose Weight & Feel Great the easy way this year! Without Shots/Drugs, Surgery or Exercise

Christine was skeptical but lost 33 lbs and 2 sizes in 60 days.

Anselmo lost 33 pounds in 3 months, 4 belt loops and even stopped snoring.

Sandy lost 25 pounds in 2 months. She went from a size 14 to a size 10 and kept the weight off for 1 year.

“I knew I wanted to make changes after I had my 2 year old and get rid of my baby fat. Dr. Wong guided me along the way and was very supportive and I’ve lost 23 pounds in 2 months. I’ve met my goals and I’m happy! I feel a lot better, healthier and I have more energy. I’ve noticed that I’ve had to get new clothes!”

“After being on Dr. Wong’s program for 2 months, I’ve lost almost 40 pounds. I was lethargic and couldn’t keep up with my kids but I’ve found an answer to my energy problems and I wake up with energy, I feel better, I’ve been eating healthier and I’ve been more active. Thank you Dr. Wong!”

“Before I came to see Dr. Wong, I had a lot of health concerns. I had extreme knee pain, I was over-weight and I also had a lack of energy. After I had a consultation with Dr. Wong, he told me what was wrong. Everything we did involved no pain and in 8 weeks, I have lost 32 pounds without doing exercise! I am a lot more energetic and I feel like working out. I am stronger, more alert, more flexible and limber so I appreciate everything about Dr. Wong. If you’re ever in need of optimal health, come see Dr. Wong because he’ll make you strong!”

Publisher’s Letter

Schools, Afterschool Programs and Valentine’s Day As children turn 4 years old, many parents start looking

into kindergarten programs. It’s a common process for parents, so don’t lose sleep over it. What do you look for in a kindergarten program? Read the article on page 18 for tips, then check out our school advertisers in this issue starting on page 16. Find more information at www.SanDiegoFamily.com. It’s been proven that kids who are in extracurricular activities do better in school. There are lots of clubs to join! Get ideas on how to choose on page 22. Valentine’s Day reminds us to love everyone. We can work on that every day of the year. There are many ways to keep your family close. Check out page 24. I like the idea of cooking together. Everyone gets a part in making a meal and everyone is included in conversation — makes it fun! While the family is together, have the kids plan another meal and decide what each family member will do. Another idea is to have Dad and Mom take the kids out on individual “dates.” Find out why one-on-one time with no interruptions from siblings is so important on page 26. Don’t forget to spend time with your spouse. Family Magazine shares 25 affordable date night ideas on page 30.

Families

There’s so much to celebrate in February (Valentine’s Day, Black History Month, Chinese New Year and more), but what do members of our editorial team seem to be most excited about? Surprise— it’s Random Acts of Kindness Day on Feb. 17 (and week Feb. 18-22)! Jody Lee Cates, freelance writer I love how Random Acts of Kindness Week follows so closely after all the personal goal setting and resolutions of the New Year. It’s like switching the camera lens from a selfie to a group shot. Shifting the focus means more smiles for everyone.

Cherie Gough, freelance writer We love Random Acts of Kindness Week! It’s fun to connect with neighbors, do something extra special for friends and family, show kindness to strangers, and teach my kids that going out of your way to help others feels good.

Adrienne Sigeti, editorial assistant When it comes to random acts of kindness, I think the simpler, the better. Small but meaningful gestures like leaving treats for a postal worker, writing an email to a loved one or calling a neighbor just to check in can make someone’s day brighter. Lisa Gipson, managing editor Being kind never gets old for the giver or receiver — make it a year-round family focus. One of my favorite articles is “Make the World a Better Place: 41 Random Acts of Kindness.” It includes so many fun and easy ideas for kids and families. Find it at www.SanDiegoFamily.com.

10 Tips for

Rachel Szalay

Selecting a Kindergarten Program

Choosing a kindergarten for your child can be a daunting task. In an effort to place your child in the “right” school, there are many things to consider. Navigating the world of kindergarten nights and open houses may sound like a pressure cooker for parents. However this can be an exciting time and one filled with excellent surprises.

1

Think about your own philosophy of education. What are some of the things you want for your child? Do you want her to get her hands dirty and experience things close up? Would you like a streamlined, rigorous approach to learning or one that is more flexible and grows with students as they learn? Do you believe in collaboration and group work or does your child work better alone? Learn the philosophy of the school and use it to guide the vision of your child as a student there.

2

Consider the whole school community. When looking for a kindergarten program, it’s tempting to be laserfocused on the teacher but it’s vital to look at the whole school and consider if it feels like “home.” You’re choosing a school, not just a teacher. It’s wonderful

18 • SanDiegofamily.com • February 2019

to love your child’s kindergarten teacher — and it’s great to be excited about what comes next.

3

Seek enthusiastic, inspired teachers. The biggest influences on your child (aside from yours) will be the teachers they interact with, so observe them in action. If you want a setting where students are encouraged to think creatively, look for teachers who think creatively. Ask about professional development for teachers. If a school is committed to furthering education for their teachers, you can be sure those teachers are giving students their best.

4

Remember: Learning should be fun! School is awesome. Learning is awesome. Being with friends and teachers who care for you is awesome.

When you tour a class, take note — Are the kids happy and involved? When children feel the joy of learning, everything else comes naturally.

5

Search for a balanced curriculum. A great program has breadth and time for exploration. Look for a school with a strong social/emotional program and teachers who take the time to help children communicate, solve problems, and provide time for academic learning and working together as a classroom community. As a child prepares to be an active participant in the world, the importance of a well-rounded education that focuses on the whole child is essential.

6

Be attentive to class size. A small class size can mean the difference between a good school

experience and an amazing school experience. In small classes, teachers are able to personally attend to each student every day, many times a day. A teacher is able to tailor curriculum to meet the needs of each student. Students are more likely to stay engaged academically and socially. The importance of class size cannot be overstated.

7

Talk to current parents. Parents are a wonderful resource when researching a school. Why did they choose the school? What is the parent expectation for involvement? What do they think is great? Generally, parents have relevant information and are happy to share their opinions.

Explore the daily school schedule and before/after school programs. Look for a program that honors a child’s need to move, explore and practice, in and out of the classroom. Developmentally appropriate playtime is essential at the kindergarten level and at least one hour of unstructured, but monitored, playtime (or more) is ideal. Many schools offer afterschool enrichment programs, which may add to the overall experience.

9

Find out the school’s policy on helping children who are ahead and those who need extra help. Students are a diverse group. Classrooms are usually full of students working at different levels. Finding a school that actively structures lessons and classroom time around differentiated instruction is critical.

10

Above all, visit. The best thing you can do when looking for a school is visit. Attend an open house in the spring before your child starts kindergarten or schedule a tour. You are the best judge of what is right for your child, so trust your instincts. There is much to consider, but have fun on the search. v Rachel Szalay, a teacher at The Child’s Primary School, has taught kindergarten for eight years and taught preschool for six years before that.

Join the Club: Choosing Extracurriculars Want to raise a kid who excels

at school and beyond? Then think outside the classroom. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, extracurricular activities are linked to better grades and school attendance, and kids who participate are more likely to go to college than those who don’t. The time required for extracurricular activities varies — anything from an hour per week for an afterschool club to 10–12 hours per week for a sport — but the payoff can be an increasingly mature, responsible child who learns to manage time wisely. Tamara Jones, parent of a middle-school student, says her daughter started taking more responsibility for her own health, from sleep to nutrition, after participating in two sports last year. “We saw a lot of growth in personal responsibility that year,” Jones says. “She realized she had to get to bed at a certain time to have enough energy to do the things she wanted to do.” Whether your child leans toward sports, music, art or STEM-related pursuits, asking the right questions of leaders or coaches helps prepare for a smooth experience.

Questions to Ask • What credentials or background do coaches or leaders have? • For sports, what is the concussion protocol? • What weekly time commitment can we expect? • Are there summer or offseason expectations for participants? • Are kids grouped by age, grade or skill level? • Are there any prerequisites to join? • Are there fees or costs for equipment, uniforms or other items? • Do coaches or leaders communicate with parents? If so, how and how often? • What are the most common complaints and praises from participants and parents? • How are conflicts resolved between participants? • Does the program need parent volunteers? • How can parents connect with other parents of program participants (for questions or information about carpools, etc.)?

Allow kids to help choose extracurricular activities. They’ll be more invested if they are part of the decision-making process. And remember that no decision is permanent. If a club isn’t a good fit, families can begin their search anew, armed with newfound knowledge about their child’s needs. v Malia Jacobson is a family journalist.

Winter offers a time for

reflection. As the embers of holiday cheer fade, it allows us to see the things that need to be fixed. No, I am not referring to that cabinet door in the kitchen or the leaky faucet in the bathroom. According to a recent survey, the average family spends only 34 minutes together on weekdays. If you are surprised to find your own family fits into that statistic, there is no need to panic. There’s always opportunity for new beginnings. Take advantage of winter’s slower pace to reconnect with each other. Take a look at these ideas for inspiration. Volunteer together. Working together for a cause brings a family closer. Whether you have been touched by a foundation’s work or just want to make a difference, it’s a nice way to spend time together. Get involved in a family-friendly 5K or support your local Ronald McDonald house by preparing a meal. Find a list of local 5K charity events at www.sandiegofamily.com/ health-guide/family-fun-runs-and5ks-in-san-diego-county.

Bring the Family Closer Activities that Inspire Togetherness

24 • SanDiegofamily.com • February 2019

Engage in creativity together. Gather around the kitchen table and work on coloring pages. Build houses out of Lego bricks or take a painting class together. Expressing yourself through art not only helps to relieve stress, but it’s a fun activity that you can do over and over. Go outside. No matter the weather, find time to connect with the family outdoors. On sunny days, go for a bike ride or play soccer in the backyard. If it’s raining, grab your umbrella and take a walk. Taking in fresh air will clear your mind of everyday distractions and make room for new memories.

Put several cooks in the kitchen. Think about the holidays when everyone worked together to prepare a meal they would all enjoy. Cooking dinner together is dual purpose: it helps picky eaters overcome apprehension about a meal and gives the “head chef” a few extra hands. Unplug after 5 p.m. Work emails, social media and random texts interrupt family time. With the exception of online homework or a FaceTime call with Grandma, there is no reason that a family has to spend the evening staring into phones. Make it a habit to unplug before dinner and make your only communication be face to face. Tip: Start this routine when the kids are young. The older they are, the more difficult it is to establish. Practice random acts of kindness. Doing an act of kindness for someone, especially someone not expecting it, will make both the giver and receiver feel good. Help family members by doing a chore without being asked, handing over the TV remote to someone else or giving up the best seat in the car. Find 41 fun ideas at www.sandiegofamily .com/donations-volunteerswanted-and-local-fundraisers/ random-acts-of-kindness. Go on parent/child dates. While this may not sound like a family event, it is equally important for families to have one-on-one time with each of its members. This is true for the adults in the family, as well as the kids. Be sure to double the family fun by planning a special evening at home for those staying behind. Learn more about parent/child dates on page 26. Slow down. There is something to be said about the families of

yesteryear who sat around the radio and listened to a story. They had to use their imaginations to visualize characters. Try to recreate the same environment by listening to an audio book and doing a puzzle together while you listen. Spark conversation at dinner. Go beyond “How was your day?” to ask and answer thought provoking questions like “What features do you think will be on cars in 10 years?” You can also play games that test how well everyone knows each other. Ask the family if they know the name of Joey’s tutor or what Dad’s job title is. Have “You plan it” night. Once a week, one person plans how the family will spend the night together. They choose the menu and an activity (within a set budget, of course). Even elementary kids can make a shopping list from a recipe and look online for movie times. Set a goal and work on it together. Winter resolutions often include changing a bad habit. Let everyone set their goal — bring a math grade up, lose 10 lbs., send monthly thank you notes, etc. Check in once a week to see how everyone is doing. Share the ups and downs of your progress and lean on your family for support or suggestions.

Visit with extended family. Continue to grow family ties long after the holidays are over. Plan outings with cousins, a dinner with aunts and uncles, or a regular game night with the siblings. If you live far apart, plan a Friday night FaceTime conversation or play online video games together. v Pam Molnar is a freelance writer and mother of three busy teenagers. Parenting with Purpose

Jody Lee Cates

Parent+Child Dates The best investment parents can make in kids Valentine’s Day is a great time to start thinking about how to make parent/ child dates a regular part of your family’s routine.

Scheduling regular one-on-one

dates (outings) with kids is a fun way for families to build lasting bonds while setting kids up with the skills and experience they need to grow healthy relationships for life. Every parent knows there are a multitude of forces pulling at the hearts of children and that if parents don’t give kids the time and affection they crave, someone or something will come along to fill that space in their lives – especially as kids grow more independent. Parents strengthen bonds and help kids become confident, caring adults by modeling love and respect. There’s no better way to deliver the message, “You’re special and I love you” than a regular outing with Mom or Dad.

How Kids Benefit Leo and Suzanne Brendis of 4S Ranch are the parents of three young adult daughters. Leo started having regular dates with the girls when they were

about 7 years old, with a simple intention: “I wanted to set the bar for how they should be treated,” he says, “by pulling out the chair, having manners and holding the door. But their takeaway was different from what I was trying to teach.” “The girls felt important and understood, which is a huge thing,” says Suzanne. “They felt [their dad] was truly interested in what mattered to them.” Feeling heard, seen, loved and valued are necessary ingredients for kids to develop healthy self-esteem and unshakeable confidence. When kids experience what it feels like to give and receive honor and respect, they learn to expect the same from others. Sharing these values happens naturally when parents model how to prioritize the people they care about. East County father of five, Brian Berry says, “Hands down, one-on-one time with my kids is the single best

parenting investment I’ve ever made. It has built bonds. It has produced amazing conversations. It has blessed us and our kids so much that they complain when we miss.” One-on-one time helps parents get to know kids outside of family roles and birth order and gives kids a chance to talk about things they might be too shy to bring up at the dinner table or in front of siblings. “It gives my kids no excuse to say ‘We never had a chance to talk about that,’” says Berry, “because they have regular opportunities to share their fears, concerns, joys and hopes with me.”

Time Well Spent Making room for individual dates with kids in an already full family schedule requires two things: commitment and flexibility. “We have had one-on-ones after school, on weekends, in the evening and even in the morning on latestart Wednesdays,” says Berry. “[The cont. on p. 28

Spend some one-on-one time with each of your kids this Valentine’s Day. Then make it a habit by scheduling parent-child dates on a weekly, monthly or bi-monthly basis. No matter the time you have, it will be time well spent, and the best investment you can make in your child.

Fleet Science Center www.rhfleet.org Bring your child to the Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park, where exhibits encourage touching, learning and exploring. Admission includes interactive exhibits, live science shows and one IMAX film in the Giant Dome Theater (the only IMAX Dome Theater in Southern California). The 45-min. documentaries take viewers on an immersive experience to discover pandas in China, aquatic wonders of the Great Barrier Reef or volcanoes around the world. Little ones enjoy Kid City, designed especially for children ages 5 and under.

MamaLacho’s Massage & Healing Lemon Grove; www.mamalacho.com Give the gift of self-care for you and your child! Arica Ursulich, RN, CMT and HHP, specializes in giving personalized, relaxing massages and beneficial treatments for all ages. For $79, receive an initial consultation and 90-minutes of combined massage time for parent and child (through March 31, 2019). Gift certificates available.

Pacific Southwest Railway Museum www.psrm.org All aboard! Take your child back in time for an unforgettable adventure on a vintage locomotive. Pacific Southwest Railway’s signature train ride, Golden State, departs from Campo and takes passengers on an excursion through San Diego County’s backcountry. See and learn about train equipment and artifacts at the on-site museum. Don’t miss this hidden gem in East County! It’s a train-lover’s delight and a unique bonding experience for parents and kids. Landon’s Gourmet Kitchen San Marcos www.landonsgourmetkitchen.com Plan a parent-child date night at Landon’s Gourmet Kitchen, a family-friendly, farm-to-table restaurant with menu options for little ones and adults. Landon’s is family-owned and features a welcoming atmosphere and relaxed, comfortable dining area. With a movie theater that’s within walking distance, our restaurant is perfect for “dinner and a movie” date nights!

timing] has changed as seasons, family schedules and job situations change, but they still remain a high priority.” Don’t worry if you can’t block off hours at a time. Even 30 minutes creates space for kids to feel special as they spend focused time with parents. Alternating between Mom and Dad helps with scheduling, and comes with the added bonus of helping kids learn how to communicate and relate to both parents.

The best dates begin with listening and adjusting to meet kids where they are. The Brendis’ youngest daughter Bryana was a shy child who had little to say on her dates with Dad. When he once suggested they skip dinner and go to Dave & Buster’s to play games instead, it made a big impact. “It was like hearing, ‘It’s not about talking because that’s not where you are right now. We’re just going to spend time together and have fun,’” Bryana shares. “It made me feel loved.” Start by asking your child what she would like to do. Pay attention to her interests and make suggestions. If you or your spouse struggle with how to engage, that’s OK. What matters most to kids is your willingness and interest to spend time with them, so choose an activity you both enjoy and relax. You’ll create a positive experience and a comfortable space for conversations to flow freely, if and when kids want to talk. “The best conversations are usually the ones I stumble upon, not the ones I plan,” Berry says. One-on-one time with each parent gives kids the self-confidence, inner strength and security they need to grow into caring adults. Your focused time together communicates love and respect like nothing else can and sets kids up with the skills and experience they need to enjoy healthy relationships for life. v Jody Lee Cates is a local freelance writer and mom who cherishes one-on-one time with her kids.

Date Night

Ideas Save on a Sitter

Has date night with your significant

other taken a back seat to just about everything else in your life? If the expense and planning for dates with your partner have kept you from enjoying each other’s conversation and laughter, it’s time to indulge in some couples-only time and take a mini break from the kids. Here are creative ways to make date night a reality — schedule a few on your calendar!

$$$$ Dine Out Affordably A meal out with adult conversation (and no dishes to wash) is priceless. Think: atmosphere. A table with a view during sunset (or nice decor and upbeat music) beats a strip mall chain every time. Try a casual dining spot with counter service to reduce cost. • Tacos are delicious, versatile and cost less than most meals out. Have you tried the best fish, lamb or duck tacos in town? Seek them out on Taco Tuesday — make it an adventure! Or, order a classic favorite in Old Town, accompanied by mariachis and window-shopping. • Instead of dinner, go out for dessert. What speaks to you: gelato, chocolate cake or pie à la mode? Find a list of delicious frozen treats in San Diego at www.sandiegofamily.com/out-andabout/ice-cream-shops. • Only in San Diego: Tacos Libertad in Hillcrest is a Cohn Restaurant Group gourmet taqueria that donates 100 percent of its profits to charity. early for happy hour at Bo-Beau next door and consider checking out Caché, a speakeasy accessed through a secret door.

Think Outside the Box • San Diego is “hopping” with breweries. Explore a new spot and enjoy a beer with a charcuterie platter. • Pack a picnic and take a board game to the park. • Trivia Night is a great way to make a couple of beers last. Root for each other while playing on the same team. • Find a local, independent coffee house with comfy seating, put up your feet and talk for hours like you used to. • Only in San Diego: The Pearl Hotel in Point Loma is a retro delight. Lounge on the shag carpet with pillows and play a board game while you enjoy happy hour specials like oysters and champagne on Monday nights, or try the Dive-in Theatre on Wednesdays (year round). Play Outside With San Diego’s near-perfect weather and beautiful scenery, plan outdoor dates anytime of year. • Go on a hike. Whether it’s a quick urban

If you’re on a budget, getting a sitter may be the biggest deterrent of going out, but it doesn’t have to be. Try these affordable ideas: • Swap childcare with a trusted friend or neighbor. You take her kids once a month and she returns the favor. • Recreation centers and gyms throughout the county offer monthly Parent’s Night Out, where kids can be dropped off for childcare, activities and fun (sometimes even dinner). Visit www.FunbelievablePlay .com to register for date night events offered Fridays at Funbelievable Play in Lakeside. walk or a scenic drive to a mountain adventure, hiking allows people to reconnect with nature and each other (and it’s free!). • Take a stroll through memory lane by visiting the neighborhood you lived in when you were single or before you had kids. Peruse the streets, marvel at the changes, then visit an old favorite hangout: a bar, restaurant, beach or park. • Have a bonfire on the beach. • Only in San Diego: Ride the Coronado Ferry from Broadway Pier to Coronado,

Making your home smarter in 2019

With smart home adoption on the rise, more and more people are looking to join the connected home lifestyle, and smart home devices such as virtual assistants were popular gifts during the holidays. If you’re ready to make your home smarter in 2019, consider: • A Home Speaker that Doubles as a Virtual Assistant. Current models can answer questions, turn on lights, play video, access virtual assistants, share weather and news updates, act as a timer, and play music on demand. Some models even help you shop online.

• Smart Lights. Replace existing light bulbs with energy-efficient bulbs that can be controlled remotely with a few taps on your mobile device. Cox Homelife can automate indoor and outdoor lighting control, and smart bulbs can even be used as a night light in a child’s room and set to change through the night. • Home Cameras. Home monitoring services such as Cox Homelife offer remote live video viewing, professional monitoring and video recording, so you can monitor your home when you’re not there. Learn more at cox.com/homelife. • Smart Locks. Roughly 30% of burglars enter a home through an unlocked door, and about 34% enter through the front door. A smart lock allows you to remotely control your home’s doors from your smartphone, and smart lock features through Cox Homelife include voice commands, customized chimes to recognize certain visitors, activity logs, and integration with other smart home devices. • Smart Thermostats. Forgot to turn off the heating before you left for work?

Ages Two Through Sixth Grade Open House Feb. 7 3:30 – 5:30

Or, maybe you want the house nice and toasty when you return home. Cox Homelife programmable thermostats allow you to remotely adjust your home’s heat and air, so that you have the perfect temperature while managing energy costs. • Smart Search Entertainment. Cox Contour TV offers many options to watch TV and stream content online, including smart search options, a voicecontrolled remote, and cool apps such as Netflix. Speak into the remote to find what you want to watch – use a movie quote (“To infinity and beyond” brings up “Toy Story”), a show title, a genre, or actor’s name. You can even say “free movies,” for on-demand titles. • Next-Gen Internet. To get the optimal experience from your smart devices, you need the right Internet speeds. Cox Gigablast offers next-generation gigabit Internet speeds and can connect dozens of smart devices simultaneously. Take a short quiz on the speed advisor at www. cox.com to determine which speed is right for your smart home.
