Families

Does your family have New Year’s traditions?

Happy New Year! Time is flying by! Twenty years ago we were

concerned about computers and electronics changing from 1999 to 2000. Now we are 20 years older— hopefully healthier and wiser. New Year’s resolutions are often broken or forgotten by February, but editor Lisa Gipson suggests changing the focus and making resolutions a family affair. That might make them more effective and fun! Spending time together and building family memories is priceless. If this hasn’t been happening in your family, find information in Shannon Dean’s article on page 24. You can even bring in STEAM activities while having fun with your family. The kids can learn (and be entertained) without sitting in front of an iPad. Look on page 16 for ideas. You also need to take care of yourself. If Mom or Dad isn’t happy, the family isn’t happy! Check out page 18 to find ideas for personal time, such as walking, meditating and spending time with friends. Find time to do things you like to do. Make 2020 the healthiest, happiest and most memorable year for your family. Keep up the good work!

Tracy Real, “Full STEAM Ahead” contributor New Year’s Day involves relaxing and movies. Our tradition has always been to reflect upon the past highlights of the year and review pictures that captured those moments. Randy Hahn, marketing representative Every year we eat blackeyed peas on New Year’s Day (even if it’s just a spoonful). We usually also have collard greens and ham or tri-tip, but we look forward to the good luck the black-eyed peas bring each year!

What are you looking forward to in 2020? Althea Hutchinson, freelance writer In 2020 I am looking forward to some awesome travel adventures. My spirit has been craving travel lately so I plan to delve into that, taking my little family along for the ride. Jenny Burman, calendar editor I’m looking forward to reuniting with friends from high school (some I haven’t seen in 25 years), traveling to a country my son has wanted to visit ever since he got into Pokémon and Godzilla, and seeing my firstborn graduate from college.

As part of our collaboration with the Binford I Can, Too! Center, Emily Dolton, resource specialist for our nonprofit Special Needs Resource Foundation of San Diego, recently gave a presentation to members of the Serra Cooperative Library System about inclusive literacy and spaces for people with disabilities. The objective was to inform librarians what books speak to kids with disabilities, how libraries around the world are meeting the needs of the disabled population through programming and spatial concepts, and how local librarians can implement some of the ideas.

Activities for Health and Balance

Increased screen time and busy

schedules have led to a number of health issues, including decreased physical activity and unhealthy eating habits. Consider starting the year with more energy and a healthier outlook, using simple, engaging STEAM activities. Here are creative STEAM activities to help your family achieve improved health in 2020.

resources at www.choosemyplate.gov/ kids. Go on a pantry or refrigerator scavenger hunt to see how many healthful foods fit into the “My Plate” recommended food groups; then identify what groups are most and least represented.

Read food labels.

Science, Technology, Engineering, Math Show kids how to eat and live well through educational, child-focused videos. TED-Ed shares a plethora of STEAM-related subjects, including health, nutrition, physical fitness and more. Check out short videos such as, “How Your Muscular System Works” or “How Playing Sports Benefits Your Body and Your Brain.” https://ed.ted.com

Science, Math The FDA website offers great resources about food labeling and nutrition. Explore nutritional profiles and compare sugar amounts in your favorite foods. Kids will be surprised at how much sugar is in different products, especially presumably healthful treats like pre-bottled smoothies and fruit gummies. Make a number line representing grams of sugar from least to greatest. Educate your family at www.fda.gov/food/food-labelingnutrition/nutrition-educationresources-materials, then visit your local farmers market or grocery store to buy healthier options.

exercise daily because it has a positive impact on mind and body. For kids who are athletes, keep moving! For others, choose activities and schedule a time that works. Chart daily progress through exercise apps. Complete a bar graph to note individual progress for steps or miles per day — compete with family members for longer distances.

Explore the outdoors.

Science, Technology, Art Exploring the outdoors keeps kids moving and sparks all senses. Feeling tree bark, observing bugs, listening to birds, smelling flowers and tasting fresh herbs stimulates the brain and promotes balance in a relaxed atmosphere. These simple activities and observations lead to hours of fun in your backyard, at a local park, or on one of San Diego’s many walking trails or beaches. Immersing yourself in nature leads to physical and emotional wellness. Grab water bottles and go exploring with the family. Encourage kids to select a trail and use a digital or pocket compass to navigate. Collect nature clippings (that have already fallen on the ground) and create art rubbings or twig sculptures at home. 10 Ways to Practice Self-Care A guide for busy parents

It’s necessary to take breaks from the

hustle and bustle of life — to pause and recharge. Do you practice self-care? It can mean something different to each individual, but the whole family benefits when parents take care of themselves. Consider making your mental, physical and emotional well-being a priority this year. Here are 10 easy ways to practice self-care.

18 • SanDiegofamily.com • January 2020

1. Unplug and get outdoors. It costs absolutely nothing to unplug and take a walk. For me, being inside for extended periods of time casts gloom over my mood. It does a world of good to log off social media, turn off Netflix and head outside. Find a green space or body of water and just take it in. It’s sure to be a mood booster.

2. Start a journal. Writing down your thoughts when you’re in the middle of them is very therapeutic. Most mental health professionals will say it’s one of the best ways to deal with past and present difficulties. Issues that are challenging to verbalize have a funny way of coming out when you start to write. Putting thoughts down on paper offers perspective and the opportunity to reflect.

3. Practice gratitude. Train your mind to always be in a state of thankfulness. Whenever you’re too focused on things you don’t have or can’t do, take a moment to reflect on all the good that has happened and is happening. It will change your perspective on life, and teaching your kids to have an improved perspective is an invaluable gift.

4. Make time for friends. People crave connection — it’s in our nature. So grab a few friends and have a girls night (Dads—get together with the guys). Plan a coffee date, get a pedicure or go out for dinner. If you can’t find time to meet, call or FaceTime a friend. Vent about your day, then catch up with each other and make plans to get together at a later date.

5. Find a hobby. Everyone is good at something. Find out what your passion is (dancing, golf, cooking, reading, photography?), then schedule some me-time to

dedicate towards it. It’s OK to do things for yourself — guilt free.

6. Exercise. Did you know that exercise releases endorphins (chemicals that trigger feelings of happiness)? That’s right, exercise literally makes you happy! No need to run a marathon. Start small by going for a walk or taking a group class. Do whatever fits your schedule and budget. Try to make exercise a priority and part of your regular routine.

7. Reorganize and decorate. I don’t know about anyone else, but I often get bored with the decor in my house. I am constantly shuffling things around and adding new pieces. I love to take on little projects and tinker with stuff. It genuinely gives me happy vibes.

& Catering ®

Healthy Dining Finder.com

8. Meditate and practice being still. Being in constant grind mode prevents us from just being still. Don’t burn yourself out always reaching for the next thing. Practice being still, meditate or pray, and take time to appreciate the fruits of your labor.

9. Volunteer. This may seem out of place on a list about self-care, but it’s not. Offering a helping hand to someone in need is one of the best ways to feed your soul. The act of giving and serving others will leave you feeling fulfilled and purposeful. This is especially so when you’re not in the best place yourself.

10. See a therapist. There is no shame in therapy. The purpose is to help people navigate issues that are difficult to deal with on their own. Make taking care of emotional health a priority. Althea Hutchinson is a local mom of two daughters and a contributing writer to San Diego Moms Blog.

Cherie Gough Getting Started

Important Health Benefits of Fiber

Experts agree that to avoid feeling bloated when incorporating more fiber into your diet, start by making small changes. They really add up when it comes to fiber intake. Start with foods you love and tolerate well and try to make good food choices most of the time. Ricchiuto-Corpuz recommends adding beans to salads, soups and stews, and adding chopped vegetables to pasta dishes and sauces. Her family enjoys chickpea and lentil pastas. Experts recommend increasing fiber intake by about 5 grams daily to reach an optimum level of 25–30 grams/day.

Are you eating enough? Would you go a day without

brushing your teeth? Of course not. In the same way, do not let a day go by without incorporating fiber into your diet. Just like tooth brushing is essential to the health of your mouth, eating fiber acts like a toothbrush for the digestive system, keeping it healthy. According to EA Stewart, local registered dietitian nutritionist and owner of Spicy RD Nutrition, one of the most important habits for long-term health is consuming a high fiber diet. “The overall health benefits of fiber are far reaching,” she says.

Health Benefits Fiber keeps blood sugar levels steady. Sugars in fiber-rich foods such as beans and whole grains are absorbed slowly, keeping blood glucose levels from spiking. This helps prevent snacking between meals, helps maintain a healthy weight and can even stave off diabetes. Fiber helps people feel full. Eating foods like whole grains rich in insoluble fiber makes intestines work faster,

20 • SanDiegofamily.com • January 2020

It’s Important to Hydrate Drink plenty of water to help fiber digest properly. Increase daily fluids as needed for toddlers (32 oz.), ages 4–8 (40 oz.) and ages 9+ (64 oz). signaling the body that you’re full, making you less likely to overeat. Fiber keeps people regular. According to local Registered Dietician Abbey Ricchiuto-Corpuz, the combination of eating soluble and insoluble fiber helps keep the large intestine clean. Eating fiber daily helps reduce constipation, cleans out bacteria and other buildup in the intestines, and even reduces the risk of colon cancer. Fiber protects heart health. “Soluble fiber such as oats, oranges and beans helps reduce bad LDL cholesterol,” says Stewart.

How Much Is Enough? For children, an easy way to ensure enough fiber is to eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables each day. If it’s helpful to keep track of grams, add five to your child’s age. For example, a 6-year-old would need about 11 grams of fiber daily. Stewart generally recommends a minimum of 25 grams of fiber per day for adults. It’s a good idea to discuss this with your doctor.

No matter your nutrition goals for the year, adding more fiber to your diet promotes overall health and will get you listening to your gut. v Cherie Gough is an award-winning local writer and mom of two who helps her family eat healthy by serving fresh cut fruit or veggies as pre-mealtime snacks.

Fiber-Rich Foods Kids Love Snacks that boost fiber include fresh fruits and vegetables, seeds, nuts and hummus. Other ideas: apples • avocados • bananas berries, especially blackberries and strawberries dried fruit • oatmeal • pears popcorn • sweet potatoes whole wheat pasta To find more high-fiber foods, visit www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/ nutrition-and-healthy-eating/ in-depth/high-fiber-foods/art20050948.

Online Tools that Organize Health Records with Ease It used to be that patients rarely had

access to personal health records— thick files tucked away in heavy file cabinets. Today patients can access personal health information in minutes, thanks to online “patient portals” offered by a growing number of hospitals and clinics. While patient portals are becoming common, tools to track health records across multiple hospitals, devices and family members are not as much (yet). How do people manage multiple health records, chronic conditions, or care from holistic providers outside the hospital system? Here are tools that track and store electronic health records for your family with ease. Peace-of-mind with less paperwork—sign me up STAT.

Rewards

The “R” Word (a note from the editor): Many people shy away from the word “resolution” – maybe because it feels like a burden or too much responsibility. Some may even say resolutions are a set up for failure. But a resolution is simply a pledge or promise. Who better to make a promise to than your own family? So, we’re using the word “goals” — family goals. It has a nice ring to it, don’t you think? Keep them simple, intentional and fun!

The promise of new possibilities

emerges with the coming of a new year. Why not make the health and happiness of your family this year’s focus? Gather everyone together and set family goals (notice we didn’t use the “R” word — see inset). Here are suggestions that offer huge rewards for kids and parents:

Maximize Family Time by Downplaying “Downtime” A recent study showed that on weekdays, the average family spends only 37 minutes of quality time together. Increase family time by

hacking screen time, often disguised as downtime. Many people spend an average of three hours per day on social media, TV or the internet, so time for meaningful family bonding is often lost in front of screens. Be deliberate with evenings and weekends. Don’t let precious minutes slip away.

Eat Meals Together (as often as possible) Eating meals as a family boosts health, saves money and improves a child’s self-esteem. A study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health found that adolescents who eat with their

Canyon Rim Children's Center “Dedicated to the individuality of children.”

Canyon Rim Children’s Center (CRCC) has been providing high quality, enrichment, preschool programs for San Diego children since 1998. We are a full day, year round, enrichment program. Our learning philosophy is based on developmentally appropriate practices inspired by the schools in Reggio Emilia, Italy. Our developmental, play-based, preschool serves children ages two through six.

At CRCC, we strive to maintain child to teacher ratios lower than those required by the State of California. Our teachers’ educational credentials exceed those as specified by the State. Our professional staff creates a safe and caring environment where the emphasis is on learning through play. As Fred Rogers, a.k.a., “Mr. Rogers” said, “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.” We recognize each child is a unique person with individual rates of growth. Our goal is to meet each child’s

26 • SanDiegofamily.com • January 2020

emotional, social, cognitive and physical needs in a relaxed, loving environment, free from personal criticism and excessive competition. Activities in art, music, math, language, science, dramatic play, fine and gross motor development are fashioned to facilitate transition from one developmental stage to the next. Our teachers also use our wellequipped, natural playgrounds to support exploration and promote physical development. Natural outdoor spaces enhance curiosity & encourage children to develop an appreciation and awareness of nature. At CRCC, children develop the skills of observation, inquiry, concentration, problem solving, and self-reliance. Our structured, yet open-ended program prepares each child to utilize his or her intellectual and creative abilities in future learning tasks. Here we work to give each child the tools and the foundation on which to build a lifetime of learning. Kindergarten teachers love our CRCC children!

families fewer than three times per week are more likely to participate in risky behaviors (drugs, alcohol, smoking). Experts at Stanford Children’s Health say that children who regularly eat with their parents are more confident and connected. Even busy families can find time to break bread together. Grab-andgo grocery store options, crockpot meals, or make-ahead casseroles make gathering as a family feasible, even on hectic nights.

Prioritize Family Game Night It may be challenging to pry kids away from electronics, but family game night is a great way to foster face-to-face connection. This simple, inexpensive ritual yields benefits such as improved academic performance, enhanced problem-solving skills and an opportunity to practice sportsmanship. Plus, who doesn’t love game night? To ensure participation, turn off electronics and choose games that are suitable for everyone. If you have a multi-age family, pair younger kids with older siblings and alternate easy games with harder ones.

Regularly Read to (or with) the Kids Children who have regular exposure to books enjoy lasting academic and social benefits. When a parent reads one book per day to a child, he is exposed to 290,000 additional words by kindergarten. Regular readers have higher levels of empathy and exhibit fewer risky behaviors. If your child will no longer read with you, discuss books you’re both reading or listen to audiobooks together on the way to school. Making books a priority encourages lifelong intellectual curiosity.

Spend More Time Outside For more information go to www .canyonrimcc.com or to schedule a tour call (619) 287-6767.

You’ve probably heard this a lot — but are you doing it? A recent study revealed that most adults list their fondest childhood memories as outdoor experiences, such as playing outside with friends and visiting the ocean. Children today spend more time

indoors than any generation before them. According to the National Recreation and Park Association, American children spend four to seven minutes per day playing outdoors while many spend up to seven hours in front of screens. Make outdoor time a family activity. Go for a walk after dinner, play flag football in the backyard, or head for a neighborhood park. You’ll all be rewarded with benefits such as increased immunity and attention span, and enhanced cognitive and social development.

Be Kind and Courteous A survey of more than 1,000 participants found that 94 percent of respondents believed that civility (politeness, courtesy) is in sharp decline. The current climate of incivility (bullying, lying, showing a lack of empathy for others) is impossible to ignore. We see it in the news, on social media and during everyday activities. Thankfully, children learn behavior by watching parents, so it’s possible to create a culture of respect at home. Parents can demonstrate how to disagree with positivity, stress the importance of kindness and empathy, and insist that all family members treat others with dignity and respect. Kids who see parents prioritizing civility are better protected from the harm that societal stress causes to health and well-being. None of these family goals require large amounts of time, effort or money, but they yield valuable long-term results. January may be a good time to begin, but quality family time and showing kindness to others are important all year long. v
