Summer is Here to Enjoy!

www.photosbymary-e.com

There’s lots of time to enjoy summer because we have 31 days this month, days are longer, and kids don’t need to go to bed as early as during the school year. Start off the month by celebrating our freedom with parades and fireworks on Independence Day. Check out July 4 events on page 30. On page 14 are 31 ideas to have fun with your family. Of course, you don’t need to do them in order. Let everyone in your family choose what they would like to do and then put them on your calendar. This will make the summer memorable. If you want to get everyone out of the house and be active, visit one of San Diego County’s EPIC playgrounds featured on page 18. Take a picnic along to these big, fun parks. Let the kids play, eat and play again. Visit www.sandiegofamily.com for more great parks that have been published in previous issues. Our camping with extended family and friends article (p. 22) gives helpful tips on how to enjoy the time together. The Bay family has great memories from group camping trips at Paso Picacho Campground in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park. The nighttime scary stories were the best. Don’t miss our fun summer toy review, also included in this issue. Happy July 4 to all—have a safe one!

Happy Fourth of July! And a big thank you to these local families who shared their holiday plans and celebratory photos with us. The Eden twins (Samuel and Emily, age 6) will celebrate Independence Day swimming and barbecuing with friends and family in Chula Vista. As the children of a dual-military couple, they will head to Naval Air Station North Island to watch fireworks.

Fourth of July is a Tupta Family favorite! Nothing beats going to a friend’s house to enjoy a pool party and then snuggling up together to watch the Santee fireworks from our window before bedtime. Nicky (age 2) from Otay Ranch shares a special bond with his father, Nick, who usually spends his favorite holiday enjoying good food and fireworks. Unfortunately, they can’t celebrate July 4 together this year because Nick will be gone, in preparation for deployment.

Celebrate Christmas in July Is your family one of the thousands who embraced Christmas in July last year for the first time, hanging holiday lights and listening to Christmas carols in the middle of summer in an effort to spread cheer and feel uplifted? If you’d like to continue the unofficial holiday tradition, read our article by local mom Cherie Gough, who’s been celebrating ever since her toddler (now a teen) became obsessed with Frosty the Snowman. Read Seas ‘n’ Greetings at www.sandiegofamily.com/things-to-do/ seasonal-happenings.

Lisa Gipson

a D of Summer Fun! Who’s ready to get out and have some fun this summer? Here are 31 awesome ideas—one for every day in July.

1

Plan a late-night date with the kids. We recommend going out for chocolate chip pancakes in your PJs at 9 pm. Not for any reason except that you probably don’t do it during the school year — and it just sounds super fun.

2

Play tourist for a day. Take an Old Town Trolley Tour to learn new things about your hometown. On-and-off privileges allow families to explore points of interest along the way. Want to ride for free? Register for San Diego’s Hometown Pass!

14 • SanDiegofamily.com • July 2021

3

Have a beach day and build sandcastles with the kids. Learn how the experts do it by scheduling a family lesson with San Diego Sand Castles at www.sandiegosand.com.

4

Experience an old-fashioned, small-town celebration right in our backyard. Consider spending the night in Julian on 7/3 in order to get a seat on the parade route (Main St.) early on July 4. The parade, which starts at Noon, features bands, mariachi, classic cars and more; after

the parade, enjoy a deep-pit barbecue at the American Legion post on Washington St.

Check out all the Independence Day fun scheduled around the county on page 30.

5

Gaze at millions of stars (and the Milky Way!) at Desert View Park in Julian or join astronomers at Fleet Science Center for a planetarium show July 7 (www.fleetscience.org/ events/sky-tonight).

6

Take the Ferry to Coronado. Rent bikes or a surrey once you’re there for added fun!

Jewish Montessori Preschool in La Jolla • • • • • •

Children ages 9 months to 6 years Proven Montessori Method and Philosophy Learning through hands-on experience Integrated secular and Judaic curriculum Bilingual Program Skilled teachers, trained in early childhood development • Secured, state-of-the-art facilities

7

Set goals and offer prizes to kids who keep reading this summer. Maybe a special day out with Mom or Dad for reaching a specific number of books or pages? See what local summer reading programs are doing: www.sandiego.gov/publiclibrary/kidsandteens/summerreading.

Classes are filling up quickly! For more information, contact us at

8

Have you seen our “Frozen Treats to Beat the Heat in San Diego” list? How fun would it be to dedicate a different day to try each ice cream shop on the list and then discover a new beach or park? That’s 21 joy-filled days! Start planning: www.sandiegofamily.com/things-todo/out-about/ice-cream-shops.

9

Visit a local farmers market. Let the kids choose some fresh fruits or vegetables; then try a new recipe using what they chose.

12

Take the kids roller skating and bowling at Viejas Casino & Resort. Be sure to bring a change of clothes so the kids can play in the interactive fountains (Saturdays & Sundays). www.viejas.com

Epic Playgrounds that Deliver Summer Fun Larger-than-life playgrounds with crazy-cool climbing structures and mind-blowing amenities are popping up all over San Diego County. These are epic parks to check out with your family this summer!

Mast Park

9125 Carlton Hills Blvd., Santee When you walk into Mast Park, it’s easy to lose count of all the things to do there! Not only does the park feature an awesome tree-house-inspired playground, there is also a beautiful Nature Discovery Area, dog parks, exercise equipment, nature trails, ping-pong tables, and even a food stand on weekends. The play areas are split up by age. The shaded tot lot (for ages 2–5) has a play truck and plenty of fun things to climb, balance and jump on. The larger play area (for ages 5–12) is impressive as it boasts one of the tallest structures around with multiple slides and climbing features. Insider tips: • The parking lot gets busy—go at “off peak” hours if you can. • Bring your own supplies for ping-pong.

Maruta Gardner Playground

1100 W Mission Bay Dr., Mission Bay This playground in Mission Bay’s Bonita Cove is like nothing you’ve ever seen—the unique ropes course and climbing structure (for ages 5–12) was designed to mimic Belmont Park’s Giant Dipper Roller Coaster. Younger kids can’t get enough of this place! The menagerie of swings includes three bucket swings on a spinner, tandem swings, and even a large disc swing that accommodates a few kids at once. Insider tips: • Bring sand toys for the large sand area. • Grab lunch or a treat at Belmont Park across the street.

18 • SanDiegofamily.com • July 2021

Civita Park

7960 Civita Blvd., Mission Valley It’s been fun to watch Civita Park develop, and now that this epic 14-acre park is done, it’s hard to stay away! Civita has a unique multi-level design that offers little pockets of fun for everyone. The playground is divided for different ages, which makes it safe, unintimidating and loads of fun. The play area for ages 2–5 is small, but unique as it has some challenging structures that inspire kids to climb and balance. There is also an awesome sand area with climbing logs. The larger play area, designed for ages 5–12, has a spiderweb-type climbing structure that keeps kids occupied for hours. There is a bridge to the top of the structure (as well as other amenities) that meets ADA standards, so kids of all abilities can come and play. Expansive grass areas and paved paths offer plenty of room to walk, roll and run. Insider tips: • Park along Community Way to be close to the playground. The walk from the parking lot to the playground could tire little kids out. • Don’t miss the beautifully painted murals inside the tunnel. • Keep an eye out for the re-opening of the park’s fun splash pad!

Olympus Park 701 Olympus St., Encinitas This epic park in Leucadia has something for every family member—toddlers who love to swing, older kids who like to skateboard, thrill-seekers who want to try the zip line, even your dog will love the walking paths. The park is designed on a hill, which lends itself to some of the most incredible slides I’ve ever seen, including a long, tube slide, a concrete slide and the most fun feature of the park—the turf “slide” (a hill covered with artificial turf), where kids can go “sledding!” Insider tips: • Parental supervision is recommended if you put little kids on the zip line – it has a kick-back at the end. • Bring a piece of cardboard to slide down the artificial turf hill. v Local mom and San Diego blogger Sandra Page can be found adventuring on Instagram at @playdatesandpints. Jeremy Puglisi

Adventure Awaits! Expert tips for camping with friends

Paradise by the Sea, Oceanside

Our family has made amazing

memories during shared camping trips both locally and across the country. Our boys love waking up each morning to find their buddies at the site next to us. My wife Stephanie and I love putting the kids to bed and hanging out with friends around the campfire. And we all enjoy watching our kids gain strength and confidence at the campground. There are countless advantages to camping together with family and friends if you do it right. Many trips with our friends go smoothly because we share a similar camping style and taste in campgrounds. Trips with other friends haven’t gone as well. So, how do you avoid conflicts and have the time of your lives? Here are six great tips to ensure that you make magical campground memories with friends.

22 • SanDiegofamily.com • July 2021

RV and tent sites dominate the landscape at most campgrounds, but the market for alternative accommodations is growing (many now have cabins, glamping tents, yurts, treehouses, airstream trailers and more). There has never been a more interesting time to take a family vacation at an American campground. – Jeremy Puglisi, co-author of “Where Should We Camp Next?”

Choose a Campground Together When traveling with others, one family should never be responsible for making all the decisions. Each family needs to research the campground and make sure it’s right for them to avoid being disappointed in someone else’s choices. Some families love rustic campgrounds, some love posh resorts, and some love both. Whatever category you fall into is fine, just make sure to know before you go and communicate with each other.

Arrange Sites Together (or not) We own an RV, but love camping with families who don’t. Most campgrounds are well suited for diverse groups of campers with varying experience and equipment. Tent campers, RVers, and cabin dwellers can have a great vacation

at the same campground, and often reserve sites that are close together. Some families may want sites right next to each other, and others may prefer a little privacy. If you want to camp right next to friends, ask if the campground has buddy sites. Buddy sites are designed so that two RVs face each other (awning to awning), and there is a common area in the middle with picnic tables and fire ring. Typical RV sites do not face each other—they face the back side of the neighboring RV. This is more private and could be desirable when camping next to strangers, but you may have a view of the neighbors’ sewer hookups. Keep in mind that there may be situations where you don’t want to have a site right next to friends—if you have different morning routines or the kids have varying bedtimes, for instance.

EIS Summer Camp 2021 Every week we will explore a different STEAM subject. Led by an engaging team of instructors, your future scientists and engineers will enjoy age appropriate hands-on science experiments, fun games, technology, arts & craft, and more! They will meet guest scientists and learn about STEM careers. 10 different Weeks to choose from starting June 21 thru August 23

• Exploring Genomics: What Makes You, You? • Rocket Science • Conquering Chemistry • Garden Genius • Galaxy Explorers • Super Hero Adaptations • Whales, Porpoises, and Dolphins, Oh My! • Innovating Inventors • Ocean Protectors • Science Communication through Art

Be sure to take copies of our free, printable Camping Scavenger Hunt (one for each child). The kids will love spotting items as they explore their outdoor surroundings. Print them at www.sandiegofamily.com/things-to-do/ travel/family-camping-round-up.

Plan Activities Together, but Don’t Overplan Our boys love hiking, but even more so with friends. They are lukewarm about kayaking, but when friends come along, it’s a great adventure. But keeping multiple families on the same schedule can be tricky and stressful. If your family loves to get up early and hike before the trail gets crowded, and your friends like to sleep in, make separate plans and meet up later. Your kids may whine or resist being away from their buddies, but set your expectations and stick with them. We’ve learned that our kids benefit from downtime with just us—it helps prevent the emotional “crash” from constant friend time. Our boys know that camping trips with friends include spending quality time with just Mom and Dad. Be sure to build flextime into your schedule. Traveling with kids makes life unpredictable and priorities can change quickly. Flextime helps deal with issues as they arise.

Take Turns Watching Each Other’s Kids During one of our first joint camping trips, our friends had an epiphany. He and his wife offered to watch our kids while Stephanie and I went out to dinner, in exchange for us watching their kids the next night. I felt like we were single-handedly reinventing modern parenting—a brave new world where parents could go on date nights while on vacation. From that time on, we swapped babysitting on group camping trips, which has allowed us to find new restaurants, go kayaking and explore spots we couldn’t go with the kids. Brilliant!

For weekend trips, the family that arrives at the campground first on Friday makes that dinner, so a hot meal is waiting for the other family. The favor is returned with Saturday night dinner. For longer trips, each family makes two dinners for the whole group. Taking responsibility for an entire meal (and getting one in return) has always worked better for us than doing multifamily potlucks. Many campers love potlucks—and that’s fine. Do what works for you. We typically have breakfast on our own because we like to be the first ones at the trailhead in the morning and scheduling multifamily breakfasts can really slow down the start of our day. We never schedule group lunches because we are usually out exploring and like to discover roadside food joints. Plus, eating lunch out is significantly cheaper than eating dinner out.

The most important tip for traveling with others is to remain flexible. A camping trip should be loose, mellow, fun and adventurous. Being adventurous often means being spontaneous—following joy wherever it takes you. If one family is overplanning activities and strict meal schedules, it can lead to tension and miscommunication. There have been many times that Stephanie and I
