Publisher’s Letter

Families

Summer is here! If kids aren’t enrolled in camp yet, check out the advertisers throughout this issue of San Diego Family. There are still openings—help the kids have a memorable summer and sign them up. July 4 is a great holiday to celebrate our independence from Great Britain. Wear red, white and blue clothing, fly your American flag, go to a parade, and watch fireworks with family and friends. Not sure where to go? Find a big list of patriotic events on page 30. Have fun in San Diego County by visiting the locations in the “Best of San Diego Summer” (page 18), divided into eight categories. Family-friendly wineries have been popping up all over the county. We highlight several in this issue and there are more to discover at www.sandiegofamily.com. Take an afternoon to get your family out in the wine country and have some fun. Look over the summer toys, on page 24 to see if there’s something your family will love while you’re outside playing. The products we feature also make great birthday gifts. If you’re taking a road trip and want something for the kids to do in the car, see our Road Trip Bingo game in Short & Sweet on page 12. It’s printable and free! Enjoy July 4 and be grateful for our freedom. Have a beautiful, fun, safe summer with your family and friends.

Best Family-Friendly Wineries Wineries and vineyards provide the perfect ambiance for a relaxing outing. Many San Diego establishments have gone out of their way to create a family-friendly vibe or host events that welcome children. Feel free to bring the kids along when you support these local winemakers, but check their calendar of events in advance and be mindful of other guests when kids are in tow.

Milagro Ramona www.milagrowinery.com In addition to its large indoor tasting room, Milagro Winery boasts a dog-friendly outdoor patio with a play structure, bocce court and cornhole boards. Kids are welcome to climb the giant natural boulders and explore the beautiful grounds while parents sip award-wining wines. Milagro has a bring-your-own-food policy, making family picnics a breeze. Check the schedule for live music. Open Saturdays and Sundays from 12-6.

Guests can enjoy the spacious patio or find a cozy picnic spot among the trees. Check the schedule for live entertainment. Open Friday-Sunday 125:30. Bernardo Winery Rancho Bernardo www.bernardowinery.com At Bernardo winery, families love the charming antique décor and boutique retail cottages— including a candy and gelato shop. Menus are kid-friendly (think pizza, pasta and panini) with plenty of non-alcoholic drinks and snacks available. Enjoy brunch, lunch or dinner at one of many beautiful, shaded patios in the courtyard. For larger groups, a grassy area is available near the lower vineyard by reservation only. No outside food or beverages, and no pets. Check the schedule for events, including a Farmer’s Market on Fridays. The Kitchen Restaurant is open Wednesday–Saturday 11-8 and Sunday 9-1.

An outdoor bocce court promises fun for the whole family. This spot is busy, with a casual but energic vibe. Reservations are required. There is a 2-hour limit per table. Open Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday 12-5, Friday and Saturday 12-6. Orfila Vineyards & Winery Escondido www.orfila.com Orfila boasts a large family-friendly park, perfect for picnics with little ones. The grounds are not far from the Safari Park, making this winery a great spot to unwind after a day with the animals. While children are not permitted inside the tasting room, a convenient walk-up window allows parents to select wines without entering. Check the schedule for live music and rotating food trucks. Leashed dogs are welcome. Open 11-7 daily. Domaine Artefact Escondido www.domaineartefact.wine This family-owned winery features a wrap-around patio with gorgeous views and outdoor games for children. The Importance of COVID-19 Vaccines for Children Children 6 months and up now qualify for the COVID-19 Vaccines and fully vaccinated children 5 and up qualify for the vaccine booster.

Interview with Kelly Motadel, MD, MPH, and County Child Health Officer for the County Medical Care Services Division Why is it important for children 6 months and up to get the COVID-19 vaccine? Children represent 19% of all COVID infections in the US. Children 0-4 years of age have significantly higher rates of infection than any other pediatric age group, likely because they have not had access to the vaccine. Additionally, hospitalization rates for children 0-4 years of age are higher than they are for children 5-17 and seem to be at higher risk of severe disease if they do get infected. With masking requirements and other mitigation measures fading from our communities, the vaccine remains the safest way to prevent serious illness from COVID-19 at any age. Why is it important for children 5 years and up that are fully vaccinated to get the booster dose? As with many other vaccines we have, we know that protection from the COVID vaccine can decrease after a while and an additional dose is needed to strengthen the protection it provides. The COVID vaccine booster was shown to increase that protection safely. With COVID cases rising, and with weddings, summer vacations, and other activities planned in the upcoming months, now is the best time to get them boosted. Is it better for my child to get natural immunity to COVID-19, rather than immunity from a vaccine and booster? No. Infection has unpredictable risks. Vaccines consistently have been shown to be safe. With natural infection children can suffer from long-COVID symptoms or a life-threatening complication called multi-system inflammatory syndrome of children, even if they only had mild illness when infected. Even if they have no symptoms, if they test positive, they will miss several days of school, camp or other activities. What is often

16 • SanDiegofamily.com • July 2022

described as “mild illness” can still mean unnecessary suffering with several days of respiratory symptoms, fever, fatigue, and more. Is the vaccine safe for younger children? What are the risks of my child being unvaccinated? Clinical trials have shown the vaccine to be safe for younger children when it is at a dose that is appropriate for them. The Pfizer vaccine dose for children 6 months - 4 years is one tenth the dose we are using in adults and the Moderna vaccine dose for children 6 months - 5 years is one - fourth the adult dose. Side effects were shown to be mild during the clinical trial, such as arm pain, fever, headache and /or irritability, and these symptoms resolved quickly. There were no reports of heart inflammation in infants and young children who received the vaccine. Are the vaccines and booster for children the same dosage and number of shots as adults? How does this affect children? No. Children 5 to 11 years receive one-third the Pfizer dose that older adolescents and adults receive – 10 micrograms versus 30 micrograms in each of the two doses needed in the primary series. Younger children will be receiving just 3 micrograms in each of the three dose series they will need. If Moderna vaccine is used, adults receive 100 micrograms, 12-17 year olds receive 50 micrograms, and 6-11 year olds receive 25 micrograms. All age groups need two doses to complete their primary series for the Moderna vaccine. Can children get a flu shot and/or other routine vaccines at or around the same time as the COVID-19 vaccines and booster dose? Yes, any other vaccine can be given at the same time as or around the same time as the COVID-19 vaccine.

What are common side effects of the vaccine and booster dose in younger children? Similar to adults, children often experience pain at the injection site, fatigue or headaches but these symptoms are mild and resolve quickly. Infants and toddlers (6 to 36 months) were more often noted to have fever, irritability, sleepiness, and loss of appetite. Should my child get the vaccine even if previously sick with COVID-19? Yes, even if your child has had COVID-19, they should get vaccinated. Natural immunity alone is less protective than full vaccination and it is unknown how long natural immunity truly lasts. If a child is currently ill (with a cold, flu, or strep throat), can they get the COVID-19 vaccine or booster dose? It is best to wait until a child is no longer ill before getting the COVID-19 vaccine. It is not dangerous to get it while ill; however, they should stay home until they feel better to avoid infecting others. Is there any child who should not get the COVID-19 vaccine? For example, if they have allergies, they’re immunocompromised, or have a current medical condition. It is extremely uncommon to have a medical reason not to get the COVID-19 vaccine. If someone is allergic to a component of the vaccine, they should consult with their physician to see if it is safe to receive the vaccine. Those who are immunocompromised or have

a current medical condition are encouraged to get the vaccine as they may be at higher risk for severe illness if they do get a COVID-19 infection. Will the vaccine and/or booster dose give my child COVID or change their DNA? No, the COVID-19 vaccine cannot cause a COVID-19 infection. None of the COVID-19 vaccines contain the live virus that causes COVID-19. Instead, they teach our immune systems how to recognize and fight the COVID-19 virus. The mRNA in the vaccine approved for children are instructions for how to make a protein or even just a piece of protein and it does not reach the nucleus of the cells where our DNA is located. Therefore, the vaccines do not alter or change a person’s DNA. Can COVID-19 vaccine and/or booster dose affect puberty and/or the future fertility of my child? The unfounded claims linking COVID-19 vaccines to infertility have been scientifically disproven. There is no evidence that the vaccine can lead to loss of fertility. Similarly, there is no evidence that the COVID-19 vaccine affects puberty. In fact, pregnant women who have been vaccinated have lower rates of miscarriage and are less likely to be hospitalized from COVID-19.

Cheer on the Home Team! The San Diego Padres aren’t the only local team to support this month. San Diego Strike Force (Professional Indoor Football), San Diego Wave FC (National Women’s Soccer League expansion team), San Diego Loyal (men’s professional soccer) and Lake Elsinore Storm (the single-A affiliate of the Padres) all have games this summer. The Storm’s super kid-friendly games are at Storm stadium in—you guessed it—Lake Elsinore (on the north side of Temecula). Make sure you visit fan favorite Petco Park as well; it was recently named the number one stadium in MLB by USA Today.

Make Movie Night Epic

What kid doesn’t love a fun, themed family activity? We’re excited to share our ideas for turning movie night into an immersive experience by adding related crafts, activities, food—even field trips—to your plans. Get the kids involved in planning family movie nights while they’re out of school and consider making it a monthly date year-round. Idea 1. Watch the movie Disney’s Frozen. Add one or more of the following: • Bake and decorate delicious Blueberry Compote Cupcakes. Get the recipe at www.sandiegofamily.com/things-to-do/dining-and-recipes/blueberry-compote-cupcakes. • Create a colorful masterpiece by painting with ice. “Art with Alyssa” gives step-by-step directions at www.sandiegofamily.com/for-the-kids/crafts-for-kids/how-to-paint-with-ice. • Take a field trip to the new interactive exhibit “Snow: Tiny Crystals, Global Impact” at Fleet Science Center. Participate in activities while learning about snow and its vital role to our climate and water resources. • Craft beautiful snowflakes, using coffee filters and water-soluble markers. Instructions: www.sandiegofamily.com/for-the-kids/crafts-for-kids/snowflake-craft. • Make a frozen treat using ice cream science: www.sandiegofamily.com/forthe-kids/family-science/ice-cream-science.

Thousands of cosplay superheroes descending upon San Diego makes July 21–24 arguably the best peoplewatching weekend of the year. Consider taking public transportation downtown for some unique (and super cool) photo opportunities. If downtown is not your vibe, consider attending the “Spider-Man: Beyond Amazing” exhibit at the Comic-Con Museum in Balboa Park (www.comic-con.org/museum) or take your pooch to Pawmicon on July 17 at Town & Country Resort in Mission Valley (www.animalcenter.org/ events/pawmicon).

• Fletcher Cove Beach Park has everything needed for a fun summer day: sandy beach, restrooms, a grassy area, playground and half basketball court. Plus, it’s walking distance to food. Grab lunch at Pillbox Tavern, a boba or coffee at Sindi’s Snack Shack or pizza to go from Pizza Port. • The Solana Beach train station makes it easy to hop on the Coaster for a day trip to downtown San Diego. v Lisa Gipson is the managing editor of San Diego Family Magazine.

Family

Getaways

While out-of-towners are flocking to San Diego for vacation this summer, perhaps you’re ready for a family getaway yourself. Many parents are asking where to take the kids for a few days that’s within driving distance. Here are several great ideas. Find more in the Family Travel section of our website under Things to Do. About five hours north of San Diego, El Capitan Canyon offers the best of glamping in Santa Barbara. Choose from furnished cedar cabins or adventure yurts, surrounded by the tranquility of nature in a camp-like setting. Enjoy sycamore and oak trees, the Santa Ynez Mountains, a llama farm with stunning ocean views, and the beach is just a bike ride or twominute drive away. Plenty of family activities and amenities are offered for guests, including a children’s playground, swimming pool, on-site restaurant, hiking trails, a summer concert series, and for adults—wine tasting and free use of beach cruisers. Bonus: Solvang is only half an hour away. www.elcapitancanyon.com

If you’re prepared to venture farther (or already have plans to visit Northern California), head over to the coastal town of Mendocino. You’ll find quaint shops, hiking, Glass Beach, the World-Famous Skunk Train and much more between there and nearby Fort Bragg. Little River Inn offers spectacular ocean views and a wonderful grassy hill to relax, soak in the natural beauty of the area or have a picnic. Spacious rooms feature soaking tubs, and many have unbelievable views from the room’s deck. On property is a fabulous restaurant and golf course. Read more about visiting Mendocino and Fort Bragg in our article at www.sandiegofamily.com/things-to-do/travel.

EXPLORE BAJA WITHOUT LEAVING BALBOA PARK.

A new exhibition about your favorite part of the Baja California Peninsula: all of it. From adorable kangaroo rats to the impressive cardón cactus, see why this region is one of the most special places on Earth. Details at sdnat.org/expedition-baja.

Escape to the quaint community of Lake Arrowhead, nestled in the mountains of San Bernardino National Forest, for a peaceful getaway. It takes just a couple hours to drive there from San Diego. Here’s a little-known fact: if you want to get in (or on) the water and you’re not a resident with lake rights or a beach club member, you can do so by staying at Lake Arrowhead Resort & Spa, the only hotel on the lake. Resort guests can swim at the small private beach, schedule a private pontoon boat excursion (up to 10 people), or take a guided single or tandem kayak tour. Catch-and-release dock fishing is also available to hotel guests. Read more about visiting Lake Arrowhead in our article at www.sandiegofamily.com/ things-to-do/travel. v All photos provided by managing editor Lisa Gipson (except where noted).
