Our San Diego Families Summer Fun is Here!

Independence Day: July 4

School’s out and this is the month to relax normal routines. Have fun this summer by going to the beach, trying different camps, checking out 10 epic suggestions on pages 14–17 and doing things your family hasn’t done for a while. For more ideas—and hot off the press—look out for the new edition of Out & About: San Diego with Kids, our annual guide to fun things to do with families in San Diego County. Plan some weekly activities. Check our website: www.sandiegofamily.com.

Summer fun can also mean having days when you do nothing. It is surprising how creative kids get if they have downtime to think outside the box. Take them to the library to find interesting books to read. Have siblings or other family members read the same book and then put on a performance, acting out the storyline. Find unique ways to keep kids connected to books in our article on page 22.

If you are looking for birthday gifts or want new summer toys for your family, we have great suggestions on page 20. Find many more toys reviewed by San Diego families at  www.sandiegofamily.com, including the ones from our June issue.

We are so fortunate to live in the United States of America—a country that is free because our forefathers fought for it. Keep that in mind while you are enjoying July Fourth celebrations and fireworks. Find a list of fireworks shows on page 30; July 4 parades and other events are in our calendar. Show that you are proud to be an American by wearing red, white and blue and flying your American flag.

Mission Statement

To enhance the quality of life for San Diego County families by providing information and resources that support the importance and pleasure of parenting.

We are thrilled to announce that our nonprofit organization, Special Needs Resource Foundation of San Diego (SNRFSD), was one of four recipients of a $25,000 donation at the 32nd Annual Sycuan Cup Charity Golf Tournament last month. Thank you to Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, Chairman Cody Martinez, and representatives of Tribal Council, who presented a check to SNRFSD representatives Linda Bay, Emily Dolton, Linda Burritt, Sharon Bay and Michele Hancock.

It is because of generous donations like this that we can continue the work we’re doing through the Special Needs Resource Foundation of San Diego for families in San Diego and Imperial Counties.

Learn more about the organization, access our annual publication, Flourishing Families, and sign up to receive our bi-monthly eNewsletter at www.SNRFSD.org. You can also follow along on Facebook @SNRFSD.

Mark your calendar! Join the staff of SNRFSD and San Diego Family at the All-Inclusive Day of Play on Friday, July 14.

The event is free and open to the public. See ad on next page for details.

Epic Summer

10 Ways to have an

Epic Summer

The kids work hard during the school year, so why not let them play hard during the summer (with sufficient rest, too, of course). The key to an epic summer is to have so much fun that you forget to check your phone, whether it’s building forts with couch cushions or taking a dream vacation. Here are 10 ways to have an epic summer. Check back next month for more ideas.

1. Splash Around

Beat the summer heat with water play at San Diego’s awesome splash pads and spraygrounds. From Chula Vista to San Marcos, many local parks offer fountains and water features so little ones can splash around. Find our list of local splash pads and spraygrounds at www.sandiegofamily.com/ things-to-do/out-about/parks-with-watersplash-pads-san-diego.

2. Get “Wild” After Dark

As if catching a glimpse of a new baby kangaroo at the zoo isn’t enough, families can keep the kids up a little later to experience Nighttime Zoo at the San Diego Zoo (through Sept. 4). The summertime festivities include evening hours (4–9 pm), live music, special entertainment, and, of course, plenty of wildlife. www.sandiegozoowildlifealliance.org

3. Superheroes (and Comic-Con fans), Assemble!

Cosplay superheroes and Hollywood stars flood downtown San Diego with the arrival of Comic-Con at the convention center (July 20–23). No tickets? No problem. Discover fun activities, photo opportunities and some of the best people-watching of the year—all outside the Comic-Con doors. So, gussy up the family (The Incredibles, Star Wars, Super Mario, Disney, Marvel, etc.) or don your Spiderman pajamas and see what the fuss is all about. Consider taking the trolley into downtown. Find specific activities outside of Comic-Con in our round-up at www.sandiegofamily.com/thingsto-do/seasonal-happenings.

4. Take a Day Trip

California residents have plenty to celebrate as Disney’s 100th Anniversary celebration continues through summer! Take advantage of 3-day pass discounts (one park per day) to enjoy new attractions and entertainment at Disneyland Park such as Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway at newly reimagined Mickey’s Toontown, the fun “Magic Happens” parade, and “Wondrous Journeys,” a nighttime spectacular at Sleeping Beauty Castle (through 8/31). At Disney California Adventure Park, don’t miss “Rogers: The Musical,” a live theater production that tells the story of Steve Rogers (aka Captain America).

5. Tune in: Sounds of Summer

If you haven’t experienced a concert at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park (downtown), you’re in for a real treat; especially if you take the kiddos to a family-friendly movie event, where a movie is shown on big screens while San Diego Symphony plays the musical score. So fun! San Diego’s beautiful skyline as the backdrop is a bonus. Purchase tickets at www.theshell.org.

Upcoming movie events:

How to Train Your Dragon (rated PG); Saturday, July 8 @ 7:30 pm

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 (rated PG-13); Aug. 11 or 12 @ 7:30 pm

7. Dine Out on Wednesdays

Receive a free kid’s meal with the purchase of an adult entrée (valued at $14) at three Cohn Restaurants where kids eat free all day on Wednesdays:

Coaster Saloon (across from Belmont Park in Mission Beach)

Del’s Hideout (Del Cerro)

Pioneer BBQ (San Carlos)

All three restaurants have onsite games such as foosball, Jenga, arcade games and more. Wednesdays might become your favorite day of the week this summer!

6. Ride a Carousel

Now that it’s newly renovated, the historic Balboa Park Carousel re-opens this month. Don’t miss the excitement of National Carousel Day on Tuesday, July 25, when carousel rides are free! Open from 11 am–5:30 pm.

www.balboaparkcarousel.org

8. Explore Your Own “Backyard”

Whether you’re visiting San Diego or have lived here for years, there are likely tons of scenic spots, popular attractions and hidden gems you’ve never experienced. Discover hundreds of yearround family adventures from Oceanside to Imperial Beach by picking up your free copy of Out & About: San Diego with Kids

Also available in digital format at www.sandiegofamily.com/thingsto-do/out-about.

9. Celebrate National Ice Cream Month

AS IF you need an excuse to eat ice cream, July is National Ice Cream Month, so do your part and celebrate. What will it be: A four-scoop sampler from Handel’s, a flight of mini cones from Hammond’s, an ice cream bar from Holy Paleta? So. Many. Options. Discover a whole list of awesome frozen treat spots at www.sandiegofamily.com/things-to-do/outabout/ice-cream-shops.

Did you know?

The ice cream cone was invented at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, Missouri by concessions vendors as a way for people to eat ice cream easily while they walked around the fair.

The tallest ice cream cone was recorded in Norway in 2015, measuring a whopping 10 feet, 1.26 inches.

10. Live Like Luigi

If you love themed outings, you’ll love these ideas for an epic Super Mario-themed weekend! Start with an old-fashioned family tournament of Super Mario Bros. on X-Box (or your favorite gaming system). Then, download The Super Mario Bros. Movie Activity Kit at www.sandiegofamily.com/for-the-kids/crafts-forkids/the-super-mario-bros-movie-activity-kit before watching the animated film, The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Then—and this is the big one—visit Universal Studios Hollywood, where you can practically live like Luigi (or Mario) in the all-new Super Nintendo World! There are three major “attractions” in this new area:

• Play interactive games and collect digital coins for your team. Must purchase Power-Up Bands to participate in challenges, defeat Bowser Jr. and collect digital coins (the bands make super cool souvenirs, but can also be used on return visits).

• Ride Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge.

• Enjoy a themed meal at Toadstool Café.

Swim Safely to Make Summer a Splashing Success

Swimming is one of summer’s great joys, but can be tricky to navigate. Reluctant swimmers, group activities and potential dangers make it essential to have a plan that keeps everyone safe in the water while having fun this summer.

Safety First

Safety is the foundation for successful swimming experiences.

“Never let kids swim alone,” says Mike Morrill, owner of Floaties Swim School. “Even if they’ve had lessons, it’s always best to have a swim buddy.”

Additional safety guidelines include:

• Designate a person to watch the water and keep a close eye on the kids. “Close eye” meaning undistracted and in close proximity to swimmers. Ideally, this person would be a lifeguard, but that may not always be possible.

• Know the swimming abilities of everyone in the water.

• Take CPR training.

• Keep a phone nearby to call 911 quickly, if needed.

• Use approved safety devices appropriate for the chosen activity, whether it be swim vest, safety floatation device or life jacket. Ensure adults wear life jackets when needed; setting a good example for kids is also important.

• “Always swim in lifeguard zones at the beach,” says Morrill.

Learn the Basics

Kids as young as infants can become comfortable in the water with proper lessons. Toddlers will learn how to be in and around water safely and start to learn to swim. Certified instructors guide children in age-appropriate activities and teach fundamentals, including floating and treading water— important life preservation skills in

case of emergency. Any age is a good age for kids to take their first swim lesson, but the earlier they start, the more time kids have to grow into strong, confident swimmers.

Note for adults: It is never too late to learn swimming skills. If you don’t know how to swim or cannot swim well, seek lessons from an instructor who works with adults.

Address Issues

Swimming and water play aren’t fun for everyone. Sometimes kids are reluctant to be near water or have fears based on previous experiences. Other times, parents are uncertain, so pools and beaches are avoided altogether to keep everyone “safe.” The best (and safest) solution is to address issues honestly and with patience.

Reluctant swimmers. Take a calm, non-pressured approach to water exposure and learning. Find an instructor who has experience with reluctant swimmers. Pushing kids into water so they “get over it” is never a good solution; neither is avoiding water altogether. Exposing kids in a safe, encouraging way is advised.

Refusal to swim. If your child refuses to try learning basic water skills, it can be tempting to give in, thinking it’s not essential. Be firm in your resolve to walk through it with your child. A general level of comfort and ability in the water could be lifesaving later on. Fear of water. If your child experiences or sees a scary water event, it may be hard to try swimming again. Give your child space to talk about the issue. Consider talking to your pediatrician or a counselor to help process the event and how to move forward.

Whether you are at the pool, a lake or the beach, swimming is meant to be fun. These tips will help ensure your family looks forward to water play this summer and throughout the year. v

Creative Ways to Help Kids Embrace Summer Reading

The idea of summer reading always sounds good, but putting it into practice can be a challenge, especially if you have a child who isn’t interested in spending precious summer days with his head in a book. Good news—there are creative ways to encourage kids to keep reading, even if they’re not excited about it.

Why it’s Important

The lack of structured learning during the much-needed summer break can result in a loss of academic and socialemotional skills that kids worked so hard to gain during the school year. Summer reading is a powerful tool that helps bridge the gap.

Start with Your Local Library

Make a visit to the library a regular part of your routine. Get to know the librarians. Have a special library tote bag. The more comfortable kids are in a library, the more likely they are to read and enjoy reading. Beyond a trove of reading possibilities, most libraries offer summer reading programs geared to specific ages.

Visit www.sandiegofamily.com/ for-the-kids/summer-readingprograms/summer-readingprograms to discover San Diego’s local programs, at the library and beyond.

Have a Family Book Club

Each week, choose a book for the whole family to read, either on your own or together, then have a book chat to discuss it. Make it fun by having a themed dinner or snack while each person shares their favorite parts of the story. Give everyone a chance to choose a new book.

Connect with a Reading Buddy

Encourage reading by pairing kids with a buddy, such as an age-level peer, a sibling or a grandparent. Setting aside time each week for the pair to read together will help children look forward to reading time.

Designate Rainy Day Reading Time

Rainy days are perfect for reading, but since San Diego has almost no rain in the summer, “designate” is the important part of this tip (and requires some imagination). Establish a time (maybe a couple days a month) to build a fort with couch cushions and blankets or pitch a tent and fill it with pillows to create a cozy space to curl up with a stack of books. You could even set the mood with soothing rain sounds in the background. Kids will surely look forward to “rainy day reading!”

Take a Book-Themed Vacation

Make a book come to life by embarking on book-inspired activities or destinations for family vacation. Taking a road trip through California? Only in California: Weird and Wonderful Facts about the Golden State by Heather Alexander is full of interesting information about California cities, inventions, roadside attractions, food, history and more.

Read Anne of Green Gables before your trip to Prince Edward Island; Read Eloise or From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler before visiting New York City.

Road Trip “Reading”

Make road trips and running errands in the car fun and interesting by listening to audiobooks instead of scrolling on devices. Find a wonderful list of family-friendly audiobooks at www.beyondthebookends.com/familyaudiobooks-for-road-trips.

Visit Bookstores

While it’s easy to order books online, there is something special about visiting a bookstore. Kids enjoy exploring and imagining all the stories they can read. Make a weekly trip, stop in occasionally, or visit bookstores in other cities for a fun family tradition. Have you ever been to Powell’s in Portland, Oregon? It’s easy to spend an entire day there! Some bookstores have summer reading games or activities, so be sure to ask.

Meet Authors and Illustrators

It’s exciting to meet someone who created a book, especially if it’s a book you enjoyed reading. Check local libraries and bookstores for author events near you. Read the author or illustrator’s book ahead of time and bring it with you for a fun photo opportunity and great summer memory.

Let Kids Choose Reading Material

Summer offers a great break from the structure of assigned school reading. Give kids the chance to stretch their reading muscles and discover new genres by allowing them to pick what they read. They might choose fiction, nonfiction, poetry, graphic novels, magazines, e-books or audiobooks. The most important point is that they read. When kids are given a variety of opportunities to enjoy books, they are more likely to read. Be creative this summer—talk about books, find new books and read together as a family. v Rebecca Hastings is a freelance writer.

math

What if math was a fun puzzle that you couldn’t wait to explore?

Imagine a wooden cube made of colorful rectangular prisms, painted in shining yellow, red, blue, and black. A puzzle that fits into a box, but only if put together just so. Twenty-seven pieces, which physically represent the trinomial formula, (a+b+c)3. That’s the Montessori Trinomial Cube.

A four-year-old who discovers patterns. A five-year-old who (blindfolded!) completes a puzzle that baffles many adults. A Montessori 5th grader who, when studying the algebraic expression (a+b+c)3, recalls the same colorful puzzle from his preschool days and, with a smile, thinks, “but of course!” That’s how joyful learning builds from concrete to abstract at LePort Montessori.

How do you get children excited about math and science?

In Montessori, the magic happens in a carefully prepared environment— where a trained, caring teacher observes each child, gives an individualized lesson with an irresistible material, and allows them to master it at their own pace.

The Montessori sensorial materials prepare preschoolers for arithmetic, algebra, geometry and science. Watch the puzzle solved and see how it concretizes the trinomial formula.
