Publisher’s Letter

We are Celebrating! Happy Dad’s Day and Happy Summer! School is already out for many students, or it will be out soon. Graduations and end-of-school parties happen this time of the year. Family Magazine gives you many party ideas on page 20; I love the money cake on page 22. You can also use these great ideas for birthday parties. Check out our summer toy review on page 24 if you are purchasing gifts. Find more toys at www.sandiegofamily .com. We would like to thank the San Diego County kids and parents who reviewed these toys. They are played with and tested and then we publish some of the best ones. Look for outdoor and water toy reviews in our July issue. Dad’s Day is June 16. Our Readers Page (p. 42) featuring local dads and kids, shows smiles and giggles. Many times it’s hard to get something special for Dad. Freelance Writer Anne Malinoski provides some new, cool ideas on page 16 for family day or personal day activities. Dads are important in our family lives. There are many dad support groups in the county — find some on page 18. Parenting is not easy. Many times we parent the way we were raised. That way may not be the best. By talking with other dads and mentors, new behaviors can be learned. Modeling good behavior is beneficial in many situations. Summer camps are still available. Check out our camp advertisers in this issue and look over our virtual camp fair at www.sandiegofamily.com. You will find the perfect camps for your kids. sharon@sandiegofamily.com

Dads

Local dads share their versions of an ideal Father’s Day. Phillip Hynes of Imperial Beach, dad to Cash (3) and Rush (7; not pictured): My perfect day includes brunch with the family in Dana Point, followed by a day on Catalina Island. We’d play miniature golf, eat fish & chips dockside, see a movie at the Avalon Casino, visit the ice cream parlor, put the kiddos to bed and enjoy a nightcap on the patio.

Carmichael Koupaki of Mission Valley, dad to Cataleya (9 mos.): The ideal Father’s Day starts with hot cocoa and fresh bread with butter and honey. Then roller skating by the beach, lunch at The Cheesecake Factory, a nap and playing with my daughter as much as possible.

Jeffrey Obal of Imperial Beach, dad to Jeremy (2): My ideal Father’s Day is to wake up to a nice homemade breakfast, then spend the day at Disneyland with my wife and 2-year-old son.

Jimy Ruiz of Chula Vista, dad to Calisto (5): Father’s Day is not a once-a-year celebration — it’s every day! Our father/son bond blossoms and thrives every moment we spend together. Whether we are playing Rock-PaperScissors at home or enjoying a theme park, as long as we do things together, we are in a world of love, respect and happiness.

Dad’s Day Out

Anne Malinoski

What he really wants this Father’s Day I struggle to make Father’s Day special for my husband, largely because we disagree on the definition of “special.” For instance, I have specific, lavish expectations for Mother’s Day: A hollandaise-soaked brunch followed by hours of peace to luxuriate in my books—far out of range of the children’s snack and juice requests. My husband is much more practical and content by nature. One Father’s Day, I gave him a PowerPoint outlining our favorite things about him. He said it was the best gift of his life—and I believe him because he cried a little. If you’re looking to impress Dad this year, take time to consider what special means to him. Does he want to go on a family outing? Or would he really appreciate some alone time? Here’s a quick guide to get you started.

A Day with the Kids If Dad wants to make memories with the kids this Father’s Day, skip the restaurant and enjoy some active time as a family. Keep it simple with a hike, bike or picnic. Better yet, branch out and teach the kids something new. Dad can play coach as the children attempt his favorite obscure sport. Racquetball or footgolf, anyone?

Dad Squad Now that they all have families, Dad probably spends less time with his friends. Encourage them to reconnect with a day on the water. Sailing San Diego Bay is a great choice for bonding and relaxing. Rent a sailboat or have one chartered. They can share snacks, drinks and great music along with stunning views of the city skyline and Coronado Bridge. Go big and book a fishing excursion for extra fun.

Send Dad and his crew to The Whiskey House for top shelf guy time. This Gaslamp bar offers tasting flights, house-made sausages, charcuterie boards and more. With over 2,800 selections, they hold the Guinness World Record for most varieties of whiskey commercially available in the world.

Time with his Dad Maybe he’d prefer to spend the day with his dad this year. Fathers and sons love a home barbecue. Send them to a first-rate butcher shop like Iowa Meat Farms or The Butchery (new to Del Mar) to select favorite steaks and sausages. Then, gather the family to prepare sides while they enjoy guy time at the grill. For a throwback they’ll both appreciate, send Dad and Grandpa to a Padres game. They’ll savor the special time together—right along with those tri-tip nachos.

Flying Solo Don’t underestimate the value of sweet alone time. Perhaps the dad in your life would appreciate several kid-free hours to enjoy a day of hobby work. Save the honey-do list for another day. Is there a project he’s been dying to start? Encourage him to use those power tools for something fun. For ultimate dad pampering, book a barber shop shave. Expert barbers use a hot towel and straight razor to provide a lathery shave like he’s never experienced. Check out Pappy’s Barber Shop in Rolando, or Mister Brown’s Barber Shop in North Park. Both offer relaxing services with a cool, masculine ambiance. v Anne Malinoski is a contributing writer and mother of two boys. Each of these ideas was either suggested or approved by her thoughtful husband, Steven. Get more ideas for family outings and activities at www.sandiegofamily .com/things-to-do/out-about.

Being Dad

Great groups that support fatherhood

Men deserve community and support as they navigate parenthood. There are a number of local dad groups that encourage positive parent-child relationships and help men feel less alone as they experience the challenges and joys of fatherhood. A great group can provide new parenting techniques or an opportunity to mentor others. Take a look at San Diego’s best support organizations for fathers.

to bond with a trusted man. Joash Sollenberger has served as a mentor for more than 10 years. When his wife passed away last year, he enrolled their son in a group for extra support. “This program digs deep into the hearts of these young men and leaves a lifelong impression on everyone involved,” Sollenberger says. director at SAY San Diego. The program utilizes the 24/7 Dad curriculum provided by the National Fatherhood Initiative. Dinner and childcare are provided. Visit www.saysandiego .org/program/healthy-start-militaryfamilyresource-center/dads-corps for more information or call 858-810-8259 to find a workshop near you.

Boys to Men Mentoring

SAY San Diego Dads Corps

Boys to Men Mentoring builds connection and trust between at-risk teens and male role models. Groups meet weekly at more than 30 middle and high schools throughout the county, where trained mentors demonstrate what it means to be a good man by discussing the challenges they’ve faced. The organization also hosts bimonthly social outings like fishing trips, campouts and football games. Mentors help the boys feel safe and respected, so they can share their struggles openly with the community. For many teen participants, it is their first opportunity

The San Diego Chapter of Social Advocates for Youth (SAY) offers a free six-week workshop series for fathers, bringing together men from both the civilian and military communities. Dads connect with fellow dads to discuss healthy relationships, child development and stress management. Special topics include positive coparenting and economic stability. “Dads Corps engages fathers and children to build healthier family relationships and thrive as stronger parents, partners and providers,” says Daniel Romero, senior program

POPS was originally founded as an advocacy organization supporting men’s parental rights. The group now supports mothers as well. POPS can help build step-by-step reunification plans for families struggling with custody agreements. They provide counseling and legal clinics to prepare parents for family court, while simultaneously working to grow their clients’ parenting skills. Classes are offered on a range of topics from successful co-parenting to conflict resolution. POPS is also a professional provider for court-ordered supervised visitation. Father2Child through Mental Health America of San Diego County Father2Child is a free 12-week parenting workshop for fathers in central San Diego. The program is court approved, but voluntary participants are welcome and encouraged. Dads connect with peers while discussing healthy parenting techniques. Participants work towards deeper relationships with their children while learning about the important influence a father has in his child’s development. Father2Child boasts a popular alumni mentorship program, which brings graduates back to share their success with new participants. This program utilizes the 24/7 Dad curriculum provided by the National Fatherhood Initiative. www.mhasd.org/ father2child

Awesome Party Ideas

Your next celebration is fast approaching and you’re wondering where to hold the party. Perhaps the thought of having it at home makes you break out in a cold sweat. Maybe it’s simply not an option. As the mother of two kids, now a teen and tween, I’ve spent over a decade attending or hosting parties at dozens of different spots. There truly is a place for everyone and every budget. So, check out this list of 25 awesome and unique ideas for your next birthday shindig or family celebration and get ready to party!

20 • SanDiegofamily.com • June 2019

• Take your group to a local sporting event, such as a Minor League Baseball game. The closest team to San Diego is Lake Elsinore Storm. • Have an animal encounter at the San Diego Zoo or Wild Wonders. • Go to a community swimming pool, water park or splash pad. • Rent a pavilion at a local park for “home base” while the kids run around. • Piggyback your party on a special event, such as an outdoor summer concert or movie in the park. • Take a walk or hike at a nature center or botanical garden, where you can learn about the outdoors and celebrate with a picnic. • Visit a fire station. Most local fire stations offer short tours for kids, let them climb on the trucks, and take photos with firefighters. Have a “Plan B” because the visit will be cut short in the event of an actual fire. • Pick seasonal fruit at an orchard or visit a pumpkin patch in the fall. • Throw a party at one of San Diego’s fabulous children’s museums. • Craft stores such as Hobby Lobby, Jo-Ann Fabrics and Michaels offer classes or parties for kids and supplies are included. • Create your own furry friend at Builda-Bear Workshop or “adopt” a baby (doll) at Distroller in Fashion Valley. • Indulge in movies at a luxury theater. • Go to a bowling alley. Check websites for group specials and party packages that include two games of bowling, shoe rental, pizza and drinks. • Scale the highest heights at an indoor rock climbing center. • Play laser tag!

• Celebrate at a mini golf course. • Schedule a group martial arts or fencing class, where kids learn ageappropriate skills. • Go roller-skating and see an outdoor movie at Viejas in Alpine. • Jump over to a trampoline park. • Visit the San Diego Humane Society or host a Puppy Party (yes, it’s a thing!). a cat café. When my daughter turned 10, we took five friends to our local cat cafe. We paid a fee to visit and play with adoptable cats, then came home to celebrate with dessert. Call ahead for availability and ask parents in advance if there are any allergies. • Have a party at a bounce house or inflatables venue. • Gymnastics clubs and gyms offer space and time for kids to run, jump and play to their heart’s content. • Cool off with an ice skating party at San Diego Ice Arena. Ask about party packages that include skate rentals, public skating and instruction, if needed. Recommended for kids who can already skate or have fun trying. • Book a group class at a painting studio or with a mobile art instructor. • Celebrate at an indoor play place, such as at play cafes and fast food restaurants.

10 Weeks of Summer Fun:

PL A N N E D

Pam Molnar

I can’t work during the summer if I don’t have activities planned for the kids in advance. Luckily, there are hundreds of local opportunities to keep the kids busy. How’s your summer shaping up? Here are ideas to get you going, if you’re feeling a little behind — or need to fill gaps in the calendar.

WEEK 2

WEEK 1

Spend a week at Grandma’s. Every year my sister and I spent a week with our grandparents. Twice we went on vacation with them, but most years we just hung out at their house. We played with cousins, went shopping and attended local events. It was nice to experience life with my grandparents in charge and it gave my parents the opportunity to not worry about us for a week.

Go to Vacation Bible School (VBS). Held at many churches every summer, VBS is a program kids can participate in from preschool to high school and beyond. It is usually a half-day camp where kids do crafts, sing songs, watch skits and play games around a bible theme. When kids outgrow the activities, they can volunteer as a leader.

Summer Camp Guide

WEEK 3

Attend a camp (or two) from San Diego Family’s Summer Camp Guide. Find day camps or overnight camps that feature traditional activities or focus on STEM, art, dance, animals, academics, drama, interior design, team sports, water sports and more. Start planning at www.sandiegofamily.com.

WEEK 4

Go on vacation. Most families take some type of break from their regular routine — even if it’s a staycation. Consider allowing your kids to invite a friend so they have someone their age to hang out with. Maybe that same friend will invite your child to go on vacation with their family; better yet, plan it that way. Get travel inspiration at www.sandiegofamily.com/things-to-do/travel.

26 • SanDiegofamily.com • June 2019

WEEK 5

Attend a local high school or college camp. Many schools and colleges offer weeklong sports, music, science, technology and other academic camps, often run by students and/or coaches and school instructors. Camps are usually available to kids third grade through high school.

WEEK 6

Create your own summer camp. Work with neighbors and friends to arrange a variety of fun activities. Save a few vacation days to take your kids (and theirs) to local museums, theme parks, playgrounds, nature trails, movies, etc. Consult Out & About with Kids at www.sandiegofamily.com/things-to-do/ out-about for tons of ideas.

WEEK 7

Have an unscheduled and unstructured week. This is the week to catch up on projects at home, play, do nothing, be bored and create your own fun. Be spontaneous! Hopefully this is peppered throughout summer.

WEEK 8

Volunteer. If you have teens, they can volunteer some time helping younger kids have fun. Libraries need help with summer reading program tables. Churches need VBS helpers. Animal shelters need dog walkers. Food pantries need shelf stockers and nursing homes are always happy to see younger faces. Find more ideas for teens at www.sandiegofamily.com/ parenting/teen.

NOW OPEN!

WEEK 9

Take it day by day. When planning your summer calendar, turn to websites like Groupon that offer discounts on entertainment, or consider a Balboa Park Explorer Multi-Day Pass, which is good for one week. https://explorer.balboapark.org

WEEK 10

BIRCH AQUARIUM AT SCRIPPS

Explore one of the largest seadragon habitats in the world.

Have a “get ready for school” week. This is the week to shop for school supplies and clothes, clear out clothes that no longer fit, and discuss a school lunch plan. This is also the time to take care of dentist appointments, school physicals and other necessary tasks before school starts again. v Pam Molnar is a freelance writer and mother of three. She has discovered that the best summer plans are made early.
