Missing the San Diego County Fair?

Keep the Fair Spirit Alive! Summer fun in San Diego

means sun, surf, and (usually) the San Diego County Fair, attended by over 1.5 million people annually. That tradition takes this year off in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and San Diego County will deeply miss its favorite summertime festival, a local institution that delights county residents of all ages. “We know summer won’t feel the same without the fair kicking off the season, but postponing was important to keep the community safe,” says Annie Pierce, communications manager for the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Fair management, however, is determined to keep the spirit alive in 2020 with several ways families can enjoy their favorite activities remotely, even the fair food. Especially the fair food. One of the fair’s most prominent icons is Charlie Boghosian, owner of the famous Chicken Charlie’s. The food stand, celebrated for such fair-tastic delicacies as cotton candy ice cream sandwiches and deep-fried Kool-Aid, is a historical institution in its own right. This year would have marked 25 years at the San Diego County Fair, 37 years for Boghosian himself, if you count the summers he worked for other food vendors. Boghosian immigrated to the U.S. in 1980 at age 11 and lived with his family of six in a 900-square-foot home in South Park, where his father ran

a grocery store. At age 14, he asked permission to work at the then-Del Mar Fair. A dozen years later, a food vendor offered to sell him her chicken stand, and the rest, as they say, is history. Chicken Charlie’s was born. A love of cooking and invention has led Boghosian to create some of the most iconic, beloved fair treats throughout the country, not just in San Diego. “When I invented deep-fried Oreos, I had no idea how big it would really be,” he says. “It changed my life.” During the last fair he attended that year, a reporter asked Boghosian

what he would be offering fairgoers the following year. “I’ve come up with a new deep-fried item every year since,” he says. “Deep fried cookie dough, Kool-Aid, even deep-fried filet mignon.” This year’s invention is deepfried saltwater taffy, which Boghosian will offer at his Rancho Bernardo restaurant starting June 5, the day the fair would have opened. “With all that’s going on this year, the gloves are off,” he says. “Our menu will change to include some fun fair stuff like bacon-wrapped turkey legs, cotton candy ice cream sandwiches and

This isn’t the first time the San Diego County Fair has closed since its inception in 1880. It shut down during World Wars I and II, and while the festivities were suspended during WWII, activity was not. The grounds became a training facility and temporary quarters for military personnel, paratroopers bedded down in the horse stalls, and a US Marine Corps detachment trained on nearby beaches.

Bring Home the Spirit of the Fair The San Diego County Fair is so much more than rides and food! Animals, art, gardening and more fill the halls and stalls of the fairgrounds. I love the experience I’m giving them—an experience you’re not going to get anywhere else.” Each year the fair has a theme, and 2020’s is Heroes Unite! Originally

Keep Reading, Kids! Every year kids ages 6-12 can earn free admission to the Fair when they read 10 age-appropriate books and fill out the special reading certificate. To encourage kids to read despite Fair cancelation this year, we’ve launched a contest on Instagram! Print the certificate in English or Spanish, have kids keep track of the books they read, and find more details at www.sandiegofamily.com/things-to-do/ seasonal-happenings/free-ticket-tothe-san-diego-county-fair-forkids-up-to-age-12.

superhero-oriented, the theme has taken on a new meaning, celebrating the heroes among us who’ve stepped up for the community during the pandemic. “We are so thankful to the healthcare workers and first responders who are protecting our communities, the teachers who are providing kids with virtual learning, the grocers and farmers who are keeping us fed, and the countless community heroes who are going to extraordinary efforts to

help others during this great time of need,” says Pierce. “That’s why we’ll be proud to carry this theme through to next year’s fair—honoring the heroes who continue to emerge throughout our community.” v Elisabeth Handley is a lifelong San Diego resident, freelance writer and communications consultant. She is also hopelessly addicted to deep-fried cookie dough.

memories and stories to share about their experiences at the San Diego County Fair, the nostalgia goes well beyond turkey legs and midway rides for one local family. According to Ken and Mandy Wall of Poway, the San Diego County Fair is where it all started — their family, that is. “My husband and I met at the fair in June 2009,” says Mandy. “Ken’s best friend was my coworker. When the two of them played hooky from work to go to the fair, I decided to go as well!” The following year Ken proposed to Mandy in a fair photo booth. He put the ring inside a deep-fried Oreo (a treat they enjoyed together when they met the previous year). “Ken somehow managed to keep the ring in one hand and stick it in the Oreo right before the second picture went off,” says Mandy. Every year they’ve continued the photo booth tradition (see progression in strip photos above). “We grew into a family with one child, then two, and now have three, but since the fair has been canceled, our youngest will have to wait for her first photo booth appearance.” Being together as a family and seeing their kids experience the tradition has been priceless. “Our kids would say the FFA and 4H tents are their favorite because they are animal lovers,” says Mandy. While she admits she’ll really miss the fair cinnamon rolls with cream cheese frosting this year, the Wall family does plan to make a homemade photo booth. “We will use photoshop to make it look like the real thing,” says Mandy. “Who knows, maybe we will all wear masks in one of the pictures! And there will definitely be corn on the cob and deep-fried Oreos involved” [in their fair celebration]. v Lisa Gipson, managing editor of San Diego Family Magazine, will miss hanging out at the Fair’s hidden “speakeasy” this year.

Readers Page Who knew how poignant the 2015 San Diego County Fair theme “A Fair to Remember” would become in 2020? We asked our social media followers to send us favorite photos, memories or thoughts about the Fair. Here’s what they shared.

“We are sooo missing the livestock shows!” says Bernie Lopez of Poway. “Our favorite memories are seeing kids show off their projects in all areas of the fair. Proud moments!” Here, daughter Jessica takes Grand Champion in the Small Animals category. Steven and Jack Malinoski of Santee enjoy a rollercoaster at the fair last year.

“My family is already missing the fair so much! We go every year,” says Kiana Moyers of Serra Mesa.

“My boys have always loved the San Diego County Fair,” says Chula Vista resident, Kristen Castillo. “Here’s my son Frankie when he was 5 (now 11) at the petting zoo.”

22 • SanDiegofamily.com • June 2020

We know it’s summer when we see the fairgrounds light up at night,” says Jody Cates of Rancho Peñasquitos. “My whole family loves, loves, loves the livestock. I was even tempted to get some chickens when I saw the handsome head of hair on this one. Happy to say, my kids talked me out of becoming an urban chicken farmer!”

“I think this is a Unicorn Float— my daughter loved it!” says Katherine Graves of Paradise Hills. “Cotton candy on top of raspberry soda with candy all over it.”

“We just did a virtual fair day at home,” says Heather Walsh of North County. Their family created an art exhibit and watched a “day on the farm” video on YouTube. For authentic tastes and smells, they ate cotton candy popcorn and caramel apple-flavored cookies and burned a funnel cake candle! “The fair looks different this year, but the celebration of creativity, learning and family time continued,” says Heather. v

Celebratory

STEAM It’s party time! Whether

you’re celebrating a birthday, school promotion or “just” welcoming summer, have a STEAM-centric event by integrating science, technology, engineering, art and math into festive party plans and activities. Setting up stations helps meet social distancing guidelines, or materials can be delivered to friends ahead of time so activities can be done “together” on Zoom.

Food Fun Set up creativity tables where party guests can craft their own meal. Use large cookie cutters to cut a variety of sandwich shapes or offer a buildyour-own-pizza (or sushi roll) station. Let kids thread uncooked spaghetti through hot dogs and boil them on a camp stove in the backyard for an unexpectedly inventive meal.

Party Treats Invite each guest to make a small, onelayer cake by measuring, adding and mixing ingredients (or minimize mess and save time using premade cupcakes or sugar cookies). Have decorating tables that engage the senses: let kids mix colors into white frosting for a fun lesson in color combinations; offer a variety of textured toppings such as fresh berries, sizzling pop rocks and

24 • SanDiegofamily.com • June 2020

shredded coconut. Set up a culinary creation station where kids design licorice string sculptures or build with candy blocks, gum drops or mini marshmallows.

Entertainment Plan STEAM activities that turn into party entertainment! Musical or theatrical performances and skits fascinate guests of all ages. Allow kids to curate costumes, design sets and construct props. DIY instruments are a perfect party activity! Learn how to make a fabulous melon maraca, citrus drum and rainbow rainstick by watching our video at https://youtu.be/ kNCt31TXhFM

Games & Activities Pictionary, a STEAM bingo scavenger hunt (www.sandiegofamily.com/ for-the-kids/family-science/stembingo) and loose-parts creativity table keep kids engrossed and engaged. Finish the party with a “magic” science experiment: learn how to put a skewer through a balloon without popping it at www.youtube.com/ watch?v=LO8OGkhsX6M. Tip: if you fill balloons with confetti before blowing them up, it will still feel like a celebration if kids accidentally pop them in the process!

Digital Thank You “Notes” Record short video clips of the birthday child (or honored person) with each party guest during the event. After the party, add a message of appreciation for taking time to celebrate together and send custom messages to each guest. Or, take a photo of the birthday child with each guest at the party (follow social distancing guidelines!) and have him create custom digital thank-you cards after the event.

Party Favors Some of the activities above double as party favors. If you want to provide something additional, give guests playing cards, dice, a mini art set, or other item that promotes creativity. Feeling extra crafty? Make party favors promoting STEAM: A DIY planter (care instructions, seeds, planter pot and photo of plant/herb) or DIY hot chocolate (powdered chocolate milk, chocolate chips, marshmallows and a recipe). These favors keep guests STEAMing ahead, long after the party ends! v Tracy Real is a parent educator who curates and hosts inspiring space for students to explore and create at an elementary school in South Bay.

It’s no secret that the Class of 2020 has been short-changed, so we gave local high school seniors an opportunity to voice their feelings, share what they’ve been doing in quarantine, and what’s next. Many kids expressed disappointment in the cancelation of prom, grad night, graduation, spring sports and other senior trips and events. Some expressed profound sadness that they won’t make any more memories with friends before going to college. They also shared surprising benefits, such as extra family time, sleeping in and gaining new perspective. Here are their words. Please help us congratulate this unique class! 42 • SanDiegofamily.com • June 2020

Abbey Frame Rancho Buena Vista High School, Vista Plans to attend UC Berkeley to play field hockey and study public health to become a physician assistant. “It’s been difficult not being able to train with my coach. I do sprints, workouts and practice skills on my own, but it’s hard to push myself to the same level when there isn’t someone there reminding me to stay focused and critiquing my drills. I love being part of a team, so being separated from my ‘tribe’ for the first time in my life has left me feeling out of sorts at times. There’s a lot of stress not knowing if there will even be a field hockey season at UC Berkeley next year.” [On the positive side]: “I took up sewing and have made some really cute shirts! My sister even asked me to make some for her. I never had time to watch YouTube videos and learn a new craft until now. I also painted my bathroom and went through all my old clothes.”

Ariana White Pacific Ridge School, Carlsbad Plans to attend Harvard University to study Economics and Applied Mathematics. “I’m in the best shape of my life right now. I work out, run and stretch every day. In terms of school, I’m really grasping this new way of learning. I also spend time reading, cleaning, organizing, communicating via Zoom and baking new recipes. And my family has game night every night!” Dayen Joyce Westview High School Rancho Peñasquitos Plans to attend MiraCosta College and play rugby for the San Diego Legion Academy, then transfer to a four-year university. “My relationship with my mother has gotten very strong. And I have learned many ways to take care of myself, such as intense workouts and training, which have helped me gain focus.”

Cecilia Bacich Cathedral Catholic High School, Carmel Valley Plans to attend UC San Diego to study Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience. “Quarantine has done an incredible job of showing me all the ‘normal’ experiences and people I take for granted! I have a new appreciation for basic human interaction, have been exploring San Diego in new and creative ways, and have been intentionally spending quality time with my family, which is not always possible during the normal school year. I realize that I have been presented with a unique opportunity, to face this period of my life with resilience— focusing on my blessings rather than my difficulty.”

Juliana Harris Escondido Charter High School Plans to attend Palomar College to complete General Education and transfer to Cal State San Marcos. “I have raised my grades since being quarantined, taken an interest in cooking and my room has never been cleaner. I also do dance classes virtually. My friends and I are going to Disneyland as soon as they open to make up for grad night. We will get the graduation Mickey ears.”

Jessica Clay Westview High School, Rancho Peñasquitos Plans to attend a four-year university outside of San Diego to study Marine Science and Business. “The most challenging thing about quarantine has been not having my same routine. I was constantly busy [before] with the chaos of life, which I liked. The best thing is that I have been working a lot and making money. I had my 18th birthday in quarantine and was upset at first, but my friends made it one of my favorite birthdays.”

44 • SanDiegofamily.com • June 2020

Patricia Oros Ramona High School “I stay connected with friends through FaceTime and the drivethru where I work. I’ve also been working out and working on my mental health.”

Kailey Deegan Steele Canyon High School, Spring Valley Plans to attend Grossmont College and become a cardiovascular technician. “I have stayed connected to friends by texting, calling, FaceTiming and hanging out with them. I can’t wait to see what God has planned for me and my future. I know that I can get through this with people by my side. I definitely couldn’t do this on my own.”

Taylor Basso Rancho Buena Vista High School, Vista Plans to attend UCLA to study Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics. “Many people are making this time special for me. For my 18th birthday, my friends and parents threw a surprise drive-by party and I got to see so many people that I missed. I signed up for ‘Adopt-A-Senior 2020’ through Facebook and two people ‘adopted’ me by sending a graduation gift—[one was a] kind lady who graduated from UCLA and had the same major as me. It is so inspiring to be the ‘adoptee’ of someone that I aspire to be. I also received cupcakes from my favorite [bakery] that say UCLA. I am so blessed and excited!”

Carlo Bollas Mar Vista High School, Imperial Beach Plans to attend SDSU to study Civil Engineering; then pursue a Master’s in Architecture at Cal Poly SLO. “I have learned to appreciate time with my friends and being able to go outside. I will never take those things for granted again. During quarantine my friends and I created our own Zoom dance classes and we’ve studied for AP exams together on FaceTime.”

46 • SanDiegofamily.com • June 2020

Brianna Floyd Rancho Bernardo High School Plans to attend University of San Diego to study International Business and Spanish. “It’s been hard missing out on all the fun senior activities. We built a robot for the FIRST Robotics Competition, and only got to compete once because the second competition was canceled. I made it onto Varsity swim this year, but only had one swim meet before school and sports were canceled.”

Mary Elizabeth Gopp Mt. Carmel High School Rancho Peñasquitos Plans to attend community college first, transfer to SDSU to major in Criminology and Forensics; then join the Air Force after college. “The most challenging thing is dealing with the cancellation of many ‘lasts’, such as championships, banquets (color guard) and even graduation. But one unexpected positive aspect is that my brother came home from college early!”

Miguel Felipe Diaz Ramona High School Plans to attend Palomar College and become an EMT and firefighter. “The fact that I will never again walk the halls of the high school I love or see my teachers, friends and school staff again is heartbreaking! I feel like this pandemic has robbed me of the best times of my young life.”

48 • SanDiegofamily.com • June 2020

Jade Hendrix Serra High School, Tierrasanta Plans to attend Colorado State University and become a veterinarian. “I have been able to do stuff [in quarantine] that I never had time for, like hang out, love on my dogs more, catch up on shows, read books, and spend more time with my mom. Even through this tough time, my mom and I always find something to laugh about to help motivate us. Everyone in the Class of 2020 will have a story to tell their kids—how hard it was, but the lessons we learned. Even though it’s sad, there is always something good to make out of a bad situation.”

Carmen Murray San Diego School of Creative & Performing Arts, Paradise Hills Plans to attend NYU, major in Jazz Studies and become a professional musician. “I do well with structure, so it’s been a challenge to remain motivated without anything to look forward to or a consistent daily routine. All the musical events that I was looking forward to have been canceled, which is a huge disappointment. But I’ve been participating in quite a few virtual ensembles with friends from around the country, and those collaborations have kept me in touch with everyone.” Summer Chalmers Mar Vista High School Imperial Beach Plans to attend San Diego State University to study Mechanical Engineering. “The most challenging thing about quarantine has been adjusting to new circumstances—completing schoolwork and teaching myself how to understand and visualize concepts. I stay in touch with my friends through social media. One of my friends and I take beach cruises together, but in our own cars.” Jacob Schuler Mission Vista H.S., Oceanside Plans to attend UC Irvine, major in Biological Sciences and become a heart or brain surgeon. “Honestly, I want nothing more than to graduate with my class and walk across the stage to receive my diploma. But I plan to get together with my friends, hang out, reminisce and [talk about] what is waiting for us in the future. I know I have a long road ahead of me. My parents taught me that you sacrifice today for gains tomorrow. Hard work, focus and perseverance always lead to great things. I cannot wait!” v
