Spring is in the Air! Spring is here—officially March 20, but you can have fun before that. Get the kids involved in growing yummy vegetables by preparing a garden, in the ground or in pots. Take a field trip to a garden nursery. Purchase some potting soil and ground enhancements. Pick out pony packs of lettuce or a variety of seed packs. Radish seeds are a good size for little fingers and are easy to grow. Read about the benefits of gardening on page 20. It’s time to move on with our lives. Playgrounds are open and are fun for families. Look on page 22 for three great parks in different parts of San Diego County. Prepare for summer camp. Specialty camps and schools are planning camp programs right now. Is your little one ready? Lydia Smith, a former preschool director and teacher, answers that question in “Ask Ms. Lydia” on page 14. View our advertisements to see what camps are available to sign up for now. All these activities help families unplug from technology. Many kids (and parents) have been attached to Zoom this past year. Friday, March 5, through Saturday, March 6, is National Day of Unplugging. Read about it on page 30. It’s a dedicated day, but any day works. Be prepared to unplug by printing out instructions beforehand. St. Patrick’s Day (March 17) is always fun to celebrate, whether you’re Irish or not. Dear Tired, You know your daughter better than anyone, so trust your instincts while keeping these points in mind:
1. Has she been in a group childcare setting before? Children who have experience with separation from parents and interaction in a group are more successful in full-day camp. If she has not had any group experiences, camp could still be a positive experience if you have an open dialogue with her counselors so they know that they may need to be more sensitive to her needs.

2. How independent is your daughter? In a camp environment, children need to be able to open their own lunch, use the restroom without help, follow directions and more. Be sure to practice these skills regularly before camp to set her up for success.

4. Are you ready for her to go to camp? Children are intuitive; if parents are hesitant about camp, kids will pick up on that and be hesitant as well. Be confident in your decision, so your daughter is confident as she sets off for camp. Make sure she knows that you trust the adults she’ll be spending her days with. Reassurance will help reduce any fears. Another important thing to keep in mind is that there are many benefits to young children attending day camp. Most of the time, children will learn and grow leaps and bounds while at camp. In a quality camp program, the counselors will be nurturing, attentive and encouraging. They should also provide age-appropriate activities that teach skills while having fun. Consider looking for camps accredited by the American Camp Association. If you’re still hesitant, consider a half-day camp alternative. Courage and Conviction Meet four young women sparking change and unity Last year youth nationwide rose up as leaders, despite personal and societal difficulties. In honor of Women’s
History Month and International Women’s Day (March 8), we’re highlighting four local young women working hard to create opportunities and shine a light for others. They honor veterans, combat racial disparity and create unique support systems for peers. I spoke to these young role models about their inspiration, work and plans to continue making a difference in San Diego and beyond.
Sophia Righthouse, 18 Founder, Valuing Our Veterans At age 12, Sophia Righthouse loved listening to neighbor Tom Lingley’s stories about the U.S. Navy. “He was an amazing role model who pushed me to strive for my dreams,” she says. Recognizing veterans’ often overlooked sacrifices, Righthouse wanted to honor Lingley’s service. She asked if he’d like a flagpole installed in his yard to display a U.S. flag and a U.S. Navy flag. He responded with a resounding yes. Working with the Miramar Young Marines, a leadership program of which Righthouse has been a member since age 8, she raised money through GoFundMe and local organizations such as the Elks and Town Councils. Her act of kindness for one neighbor blossomed into a passion project. Sophia founded “Valuing Our Veterans,” a program that seeks out veterans, listens to stories about service and offers them the opportunity to be honored by a platoon with the installation of a flagpole and a flag-raising ceremony. “It brings them joy to be recognized openly in the community,” says Righthouse. Righthouse received the Young Marine Distinguished Order of Merit (the highest award a Young Marine can earn) for her efforts. She was also recently awarded a national scholarship, which includes the opportunity to travel to Guam and Iwo Jima. She will accompany WWII veterans for the Reunion of Honor, which commemorates the Battle of Iwo Jima. Currently a senior at Westview High School in Rancho Peñasquitos, Righthouse created an online platform for Young Marines to connect and learn. Over 1,000 members nationwide have met virtually, participating in Zoom sessions and PowerPoint presentations about leadership, fitness, history and science. Aya Jaffer, 15 Joy Ruppert, 16 Youth Co-Leaders, Encinitas4Equality Galvanized by last summer’s social justice movement, San Dieguito Academy students Aya Jaffer and Joy Ruppert began looking for opportunities to create change. “I knew I could use my skills to make an impact toward progressive change within my community,” says Ruppert. “When I heard that Encinitas4Equality (E4E) was creating committees to fight for racial justice, that was my chance to get involved.” Jaffer feels an innate passion to advocate for social justice. “As an Arab American, it’s always been important for me to stand up for fellow minorities in my community to ensure their safety and comfort,” she says. Ruppert concurs. “My heart has always been passionate for activism,” she says. “I am a Chinese adoptee. Diversity and inclusion have always been very important to me. I want all minorities to feel heard, welcomed and represented.” As co-leaders of E4E, the girls conducted webinars with guest speakers from local universities to raise awareness about ethnic studies courses and to teach skills to advocate for diversity within schools. The youth committee then constructed proposals addressing the lack of diversity in the district’s secondary curriculum and promoted an online template, allowing teens to share their experiences with racism and exclusion. The group requested a special meeting with the school board to address their concerns, but it was denied. In response, Jaffer and Ruppert organized a protest, displaying their school community’s persistent desire for change. According to the girls, there was an amazing turnout, but there was still no response from the board. The young women remain hopeful, now working with individual schools. They created the MultiCultural AntiRacism Coalition at San Dieguito High School Academy, which helps foster and support other anti-racist clubs throughout the district. Sanvi Pal, 17 President and CEO, Light the Way Project The child of first-generation immigrants, Pal found navigating high school difficult because the U.S. education system differs greatly from her parents’ school experience. She recalls feeling overwhelmed by choosing classes and extracurriculars as a high school freshman. “That’s why I created Light the Way Project, a peer-mentorship platform where students help students,” says Pal. “I wanted to enable others to make the best of high school and find their motivation to impact the world positively.” Enlisting a group of friends at Del Norte High School (4S Ranch) who share her passion, Pal launched the organization, which offers webinars for high schoolers on helpful topics such as time management, resume writing, internships and volunteer opportunities. The group recently hosted a technology and entrepreneurship summit featuring industry leaders who shared their experiences. Each webinar has reached about 100 students. Recruiting a team with strong, diverse skills in web design, marketing and finances has been key to the group’s success. “We all have something unique and invaluable to offer the world,” says Pal. “If everyone lived up to their potential, the value we would add to our communities would be far greater.” Light the Way has high ambitions for the future and is taking steps to make them a reality. By connecting online with teens who share their mission, they have helped open chapters of their organization in D.C., New York, Virginia and Texas. GROW, LEARN , EAT Gardening adventures with kids Wondering how to get your kids to eat more veggies? Grow them. Whether it’s a container on the patio or a raised bed, gardening is easier than most people think, even with limited space.
Encourage Sharing
Last year, our family dug up the front lawn and built raised bed garden boxes. We started gardening when the kids were little, so over the years we’ve reaped the rewards of more time outdoors, building personal responsibility, and growing seeds into healthy, irresistible foods. Spring is the optimum time to dig into gardening with kids. Read on for great resources from local experts.

Why Garden? Raise Adventurous Eaters When children take ownership of growing food, they are more likely to try new foods. “Growing food cultivates curiosity,” says Jeni Barajas, environmental educator at Olivewood Gardens in National City. “My students have become more adventurous eaters. Even trying one bite gives kids the opportunity to expand their palate.” When kids try new foods, it creates a ripple effect, encouraging family members to try new foods, too. “We have families who now love Swiss chard on tacos.”
Pick Fresh Food My greatest victory as a gardener is picking fresh food outside my doorstep. Food we grow tastes fresh and delicious, and I know my family is getting top-quality nutrients from the freshest, organic produce.

Then cover them with only 1/4-inch of soil. Keep soil moist at all times and ensure plenty of sunlight. Radishes will space out the carrots as they plump up first; carrots will follow. San Diego offers a plethora of parks and playgrounds; some rise above the rest. We’ve scoped out the best of the best for your family’s next day trip. Time to explore!

San Dieguito County Park 1628 Lomas Santa Fe Dr. Del Mar Just off the coast of Del Mar, San Dieguito County Park has so much to offer that you’ll walk away tired—you may even get that naptime for the kids you were hoping for. Start your day by parking close to the Upper Park Entrance off Highland Drive, which is closest to the five— yes, FIVE!—playgrounds. There’s a tot lot close to the baseball field, and plenty to offer kids of all ages just up the hill. Once you’re done playing, put young kids in a jogging stroller or hiking backpack and take Sandstone Trail over to Hawk’s Nest Viewing Platform to enjoy views of the whole park. Walk down towards Activity Hill where you’ll find two amazing slides and fun suspension bridges. If you walk the rest of the way towards Pine Tower, you’ll find two ponds full of turtles and expansive green spaces perfect for a picnic. When you’re ready to head home, have your partner walk back to get the car or take the straight path closest to the Lower Park Entrance. Insider Tips: • Parking is $3, but there’s typically street parking available. • Grab a map near the parking lot or trailhead. • On your way, stop at Flower Hill Promenade on Via de la Valle to pick up lunch. Flower Child café offers a delicious menu, including vegan and vegetarian items.

Otay Lakes County Park 2270 Wueste Rd., Chula Vista With mountain and water views, this 78-acre park makes you feel like you’re on a weekend getaway. Otay Lakes offers something for everyone —a 0.8-mile hike to the water tower for beginners or a 2.7-mile hike up to the summit (feel those glutes burn!). There are two playgrounds—one built for kids ages 5 to 12, and an adorable boat playground designed for ages 2 to 5, which is fenced in (parents rejoice!). The playgrounds are next to each other and close to parking, bathrooms, and grassy picnic areas. Be sure to adventure down the small, well-groomed nature trail. Insider Tips: • Pay the $3 parking fee; street parking is not nearby. • Stop at Board & Brew on your way to pick up sandwiches (located on Millenia Ave., near Otay Ranch Town Center). Pro tip: Ask for extra sauce!

6350 College Grove Dr., City Heights This park is a hidden gem and keeps every member of the family happy. The beautiful lake is unlike anything in San Diego, featuring old trees with roots for kids to climb on all around the water. A paved walking trail surrounds the lake, with bathroom stops along the way. If you start your day at the playground, make sure to bring sand toys and running shoes. This playground has a special feature—exercise equipment for ages 14+ (not your typical pull-up bar) right next to the tot lot. Bring a picnic lunch and claim one of many shaded picnic tables along the walking path. Insider Tips: • If you start at the playground, skip the main parking lot. Find the smaller lot right before it. • Grab lunch at Marketplace at the Grove on College Ave., which offers everything from Rubio’s to Coco’s Bakery.

24 hours of untethered family fun Celebrate the 12th annual National Day of Unplugging, a 24-hour event dedicated to family connection that starts on Friday, March 5. “No headphones in the common areas!” I yelled at my son after trying to get his attention three times. My family started wearing headphones last year to concentrate on our individual needs. We stopped talking to one another, so we made a rule to reconnect when grabbing snacks between Zoom classes and meetings. No earbuds or TV allowed— just wellness checks and hugs.

The National Day of Unplugging (NDU), built on the idea of family connection, is an event that starts at sundown on Friday, March 5 and runs until sundown on Saturday, March 6. This 24hour family day centers around putting devices to “sleep” and focusing on loved ones. There are no social media check-ins, just living in the moment through art, music, recreation and play. So, what’s the best way to focus on family and reconnect? NDU has 50 ideas on their website for socially distanced fun. Here are a few favorites.
Create Fort Night (not Fortnite) Fun! Build a fort with boxes, toss blankets over a table or create an A-frame with couch cushions. Fill it with family, plush friends, flashlights and books. Make a picnic. Try an alternative to traditional s’mores (www.sandiegofamily.com/thingsto-do/dining-and-recipes/21-waysto-make-smores), pretend the power is out and camp in the living room. IKEA offers instructions on Instagram for those who lack architectural fort skills, or use Noodle Builder Girders (durable, foam connectors) and pool noodles to create forts with doors that open and close. Artists Andres Amador and London Kaye will instruct participants how to create public art. Amador is an environmental artist who creates beautiful mandalas in sand, using a rake. He filmed a movie at Moonlight Beach (Encinitas) showing beachgoers how to make an ephemeral sand drawing, and a video short on making nature art in the backyard. Kaye is a yarnbomber who teaches would-be urban artists how to crochet simple pieces on chain link fences and trees. Her instructions and supplies are available on the NDU website. Kaye’s Crochet for a Cause movement inspires artists to crochet signs for people moving from homelessness into a safe living environment. Sculptor Andy Goldsworthy takes rock stacking and nature art to another level. The Early Years Learning Framework offers downloadable lessons for creating Goldsworthy-type art with young children at www.andygoldsworthy101.weebly.com/ index.html. Locally, kids might gain inspiration from The Sandcastle Man, whose gravitydefying creations grace Coronado beaches and private events. Additional “unplug and connect” ideas include participating in mindful practices like yoga and meditation, taking a bike ride, heading to the snow for a sledding adventure or having a family dance party. Families can also volunteer or delve into a big home project, such as cleaning up the garden and celebrating with an evening tea party (complete with fancy dresses and hats). Let’s hope this dedicated full day inspires more days (or even hours) of screen-free family fun.
NDU ambassadors with their own Little Free Libraries (LFL) are conducting scavenger hunts in Clairemont, La Mesa, Santee, North/South Park and Calipatria (Imperial County). Families who register on the NDU site will be given information about the hunt closest to their home (before unplugging, of course), in addition to the first clue. After that, follow the clues at each participating LFL (and pick up free, used books). Some LFL sites will offer special giveaways and treats. The San Diego County Bicycle Coalition will teach kids how to correctly adjust their helmets at stops on the Clairemont and North/ South Park routes. v
