After a year of mostly staying home, inside, with very little physical activity, letting your kids loose at camp sounds like a perfect summer plan. Camp provides many benefits to children of all ages, this year especially. They make friendships, create bonds over silly games, spend time outdoors in nature, and get lots of physical activity. Overnight camp provides even more opportunity for children to learn independence. For many, overnight camp is a place where lifetime friendships are made. While the social, emotional and physical benefits of camp are even greater in 2021, there are still safety measures to consider. With mass vaccination still several months away and children ineligible at this time, it’s unlikely we will reach herd immunity by summer. Don’t fear though! Last

year many camps operated safely and successfully and I have no doubt this summer can be the same.

Here are some things to consider: 1. Camps should consider testing all staff regularly and testing campers before attending.

2. Camps should continue to enforce mask wearing for all staff and campers if possible. There should be lots of hand washing and sanitizing of surfaces as well.

3. Camps should cohort campers and keep them distanced from other cohorts for ease of quarantine if needed.

high risk family members, getting those members vaccinated should increase confidence for parents who want to send their children to camp. Furthermore, if a majority of counselors and staff can get vaccinated before summer, even better. Surrounding campers with a bubble of immunity will protect them and their loved ones. Overall, children everywhere are desperate for some much needed fun, outdoor play, exercise and socialization. My hope is that summer will be a great opportunity for them to get back to feeling like kids again.

The good news is that as of February, cases are falling and immunity is rising. For children with

Moms are special today and every day. This month, we are taking a little extra time to celebrate Mother’s Day. We asked you, local San Diego County Moms, to respond to some questions—and you did. Check pages 20–23 to find the responses. Moms, take care of yourselves. I am sure you have heard this many times: If you are happy, the family is happy. It is so true. Read page 24 for great ideas to make yourself a priority. Learn to ask for help, if you need it. That is a biggie. It’s fun to take the family out for a walk. Outdoor activities can also help release stress. Family Magazine contributor, Sandra Page (IG @playdatesandpints), has shared local parks with hidden trails. Read about them on page 28. In-person school just started for many students, but the end of the school year will be here quickly. Choose summer camps for the kids to get out of the house and have some fun. Please take the camp quiz on page 16 to see what kind of camps the kids will enjoy. View camp advertisers in this issue and sign up as soon as possible because they fill up fast. Happy Mother’s Day to all our readers and moms in San Diego County! And “May the fourth be with you”—see our round-up of fun ideas for Star Wars Day on page 38.

We asked San Diego County moms, what are you doing for Mother’s Day this year?

Samantha Noda, Carlsbad I wish I could fly to my hometown in Wisconsin and surprise my mom for Mother’s Day. She is widowed and lives alone; the pandemic has really made her feel isolated.

Teresa James, San Carlos For Mother’s Day, I would love to get a massage or have my nails done.

Which camps should my child attend?

Take Our Summer Camp Quiz When we were kids, we

just hung around the house during the summer; we played with friends and maybe took swim lessons or an art class. Unstructured time and fun classes are excellent ways to spend breaks from school, but summer camps offer awesome benefits as well. Camps give kids experiences and tools to help discover who they are, what they like/dislike, and what they want to become. Children gain confidence when given the freedom and opportunities to explore new ideas and activities. These days there are camps for everything imaginable! If you are wondering how to choose camps for your child this summer, take this fun quiz together. Involving your child in the decision-making process helps him be invested in the experience.

16 • SanDiegofamily.com • May 2021

Summer Camp Quiz Choose ONE answer per question: 1. Which BEST describes your child? A. Artistic B. Athletic C. Intellectual D. Adventurous

6. What is your child’s favorite role in a group project? A. Presenter B. Collaborator C. Researcher D. Helps wherever needed

2. What is your child’s favorite subject in school? A. Music B. P.E. C. Math or science D. Many different subjects

7. What’s your child’s favorite rainy-day activity? A. Listening to music B. Running around the house C. Playing a video game D. Inviting a friend over to hang out

3. What is your child’s favorite afterschool activity? A. Choir or musical instrument lessons B. Sports practice C. Robotics or chess club D. Participating in a variety of activities with friends

8. Which would be your child’s dream vacation? A. Seeing Broadway shows in New York City B. Touring sports stadiums around the countr y C. Visiting science museums D. Different daily activities: hiking, playing on the beach, amusement parks, etc.

4. Which type of birthday party would your child choose? A. Dance party B. Indoor soccer or gymnastics C. STEM experiments D. Every year it’s different 5. What does your child usually do on weekends? A. Goes to theater rehearsal B. Has a game C. Competes in a robotics or math tournament D. Bike riding, art projects, shoots hoops

9. Which of these appeals most to your child? A. Starring in a musical B. Being team captain C. Creating an app D. Trying new things 10. What does your child want to be when he/she grows up? A. Movie star B. Coach C. Engineer D. No clue

Answer Key Tally your answers to figure out how many times A, B, C or D was chosen. Match the most picked letter to the type of camps below. Then, flip through our magazine and find the perfect programs. A. Creative and performing arts camps may be the best choice for your child. This could include a visual art such as pottery, drawing, woodworking, painting, sewing and photography. Or, it could include a performance art such as dance, band, chorus and children’s theater, which often showcase a production at the camp’s conclusion.

B. Consider sports camps for your child, which may focus on one sport or could showcase a variety of sports. Check out specific sports camps such as gymnastics, surfing, sailing, horseback riding, tennis, golf, soccer, fencing and lacrosse, where skills will be improved or learned, depending on the child’s skill level. These camps offer a great opportunity for kids to try new sports in a safe environment. Variety camps allow kids to dabble in a number of different sports. C. If your child loves to code, build and tinker, then a science/tech camp is probably a good fit. These camps make learning science and technology fun and exciting for kids. They may provide opportunities to work on science experiments, design a website or program a robot. Find science and tech camps through schools, colleges and local museums. D. Traditional camps (such as Girl Scouts or Boys & Girls Clubs) are often what people think of when envisioning summer camp—canoeing, hiking, archery, relay races, swim lessons, crafts and more. They can be considered “jack-of-all-trades” camps because they offer all types of activities for kids to try. Some traditional camps offer many of the activities listed in A, B and C. If your children enjoy exploring and experiencing new things or don’t have one specific activity they are passionate about, then traditional camps are a perfect choice. Some are half- or full-day, while others are overnight camps where kids experience campouts, campfires and lake or beach activities. v

Happy Mother’s Day!

Carin Hall, Fallbrook It took motherhood in a pandemic to reevaluate what’s important in life. For me, it meant changing career paths. I started working on fun, creative projects and caring less about my job title. I’m grateful for boredom and all its uncomfortable feelings. In it, I’ve sought outlets that led to creative expression and comfort from friends that brought us closer.

Celebrating

San Diego County

Moms

We’d like to give a big shout-

out to moms everywhere, who have stepped up to the plate in amazing ways as they’ve navigated family life, work commitments, schooling from home and much more. We asked local moms three questions: 1. What surprising benefits have you seen or experienced as a result of being in a pandemic? 2. Is there something you’re more grateful for today that you may have taken for granted before? 3. If no restrictions, how would you be spending Mother’s Day this year?

Nichole Daley Markson, North Park I’m grateful that communicating virtually has given my children the ability to connect with extended family.

Michelle Silva Rancho Peñasquitos It has been inspiring to see various frontline workers find ways to work in a safe manner. As a pediatric nurse practitioner, we promptly learned telemedicine to reach out to our vulnerable patients.

Here’s what some of them had to say (thank you to everyone who responded).

Lindsay Strong San Marcos For Mother’s Day, I would love to visit (and have brunch with) the multiple generations of mothers in my family.

20 • SanDiegofamily.com • May 2021

Melissa Lanza Rancho Bernardo I’m so grateful for our daily family dinnertime. We didn’t make it a priority before the pandemic, but now we dedicate the time to each other (with no technology)! It’s an opportunity to connect every day.

Cassie Jimenez, Clairemont I would love to take my daughter to Australia to visit my mom and her husband while exploring a different country.

Amanda Arnold Rancho Peñasquitos You don’t realize how much a simple smile can tell you about a person’s day when it’s covered by a mask. I will be happy to start seeing daily smiles again.

Maggie Worthington Coronado My husband is deployed for Mother’s Day, so it’s just me and my girls. I would love to have a spa day and hang out at the pool all day with my kiddos.

Jennifer Coleman, Point Loma I will celebrate Mother’s Day by having brunch [at a restaurant]. I wish my grandma could join us. Not being able to hug my grandparents has been tough. I’m thankful for FaceTime! Carolina Santiago, Eastlake Previously, I took our outdoor patio space for granted. Now I am super grateful for it because we have had many dinners and game nights out there.

Jamie Nangpi Harris Rancho Peñasquitos I would love to throw a Mother’s Day tea party at my home for my mom, mother-in-law and all my mommy friends. Veronica Medrano, Oceanside I would love to take my family on a weekend cruise that leaves from San Diego. It would be our first time going on a cruise together, but as long as we’re together, that’s what matters most!

Marzena Poniatowska Carmel Valley There is a silver lining in everything. For us, homeschooling three third graders (my daughter and two of her friends) in a home setting has been a blessing. The kids love it and so do we parents.

Corey Miller, Mira Mesa I joined taekwondo with my daughter (9), and together we competed in virtual tournaments all over the world and won multiple titles! I’ve come to realize how important staying fit and healthy are, not only to care for my family, but for my own emotional well-being.

Erika Hamson, Valley Center I would love to fly home to Saipan (US Territory, Pacific Island) to surprise my mom. She is the strongest, most generous and most beautiful person I know. I haven’t seen her in four years (she’s never met my toddler in person) and I miss her so much!

Daniella Slewa, El Cajon I’ve grown closer to my faith and my family. We understand each other now more than ever. I didn’t think it was possible to learn more about them (or myself). For Mother’s Day, I’d love to have a picnic at the Torrey Pines Gliderport!

Chrissy Sampan Chula Vista A surprising benefit of being in a pandemic is finding out that I am a great barber! Who knew that YouTube tutorials on cutting hair would actually pay off?

Misha Stone, Lakeside I was surprised to find so many spots in San Diego to avoid quarantine baby blues. I couldn’t imagine a more peaceful, beautiful place to enjoy my first pregnancy. For Mother’s Day, I would love my family to visit from L.A. and Texas so they can meet my baby.

Mariecel Ocadiz-Garon, San Marcos For Mother’s Day, I’d love a spa day and brunch with my mother-in-law and my mom because they help take care of my boys while my husband (law enforcement) and I (registered nurse) work.

Kirsty Mitchell Encinitas Everyone in the world was forced to stop, slow down, read a book, do a puzzle or spend precious time together, going on walks, gardening or baking. There’s pure beauty in spending quality time with my kids, instead of living in half moments, absorbed in technology or working. Ana Mendoza, Rancho Peñasquitos As a preschool owner, last year was a wake-up call. I learned to think quickly and came up with a solution, instead of waiting for help. I obtained a home daycare license and continued to provide services to families needing childcare and distance learning. I’m thankful my husband supported the idea of bringing the school to our house.

Karin Rubesh Rancho Peñasquitos Before the pandemic, I was traveling a lot for work. With the shutdown, I was able to spend every day at home with my kids for five months. It was a blessing!

Jenna Nascimento, North Park I feel way more grateful to live in San Diego. People often say that the rents are high, but hey, so is the quality of life! I bask in gratitude to be able to spend time at the beach with toes in the water, watching magnificent sunsets, picnics in the park, and all that this city has to offer. Kari Niehuus, San Diego We’ve definitely taken advantage of our love for the outdoors! Almost every week you can find us on a different trail—it gives me so much happiness.

Salena Ausonio, Poway Today I’m more grateful for moms. My mom and mother-in-law used to help with childcare and enrich my children’s lives, but we have hardly seen them. I still need a good mom hug—and sometimes long for one.

Vidhya Pandi, Torrey Highlands The quarantine has certainly helped my family be closer. My first grader who would generally answer my questions with one or two word answers, now talks to me candidly about her fears and worries on Zoom, about her friends and about us. v May 2021 • SanDiegofamily.com •

MOMS: Time to Make

Yourself a

Priority

Raising kids is arguably one of

the most life-changing and rewarding life events, but it can also be the most exhausting and draining. While moms often put kids’ needs and wants before their own, it’s important to make time for themselves so they can function at their best when taking care of the family.

Moms—it’s time to make yourself a priority. Here is more about why—and how to do it. THE WHY Mental health is important. Being a mother has its emotional highs and lows. Your body goes through amazing changes both physically and mentally during pregnancy, birth, and the years that follow. Ask your significant other or a trusted friend to help monitor when you are struggling. Ask for help if you are not at your best emotionally. Taking care of a family day-to-day can be draining on emotional reserves, but when you participate in activities that make you feel happy and healthy, it is easier to be attentive and supportive to loved ones. Physical health is a priority. If you are physically exhausted, it is hard to be patient with kids or productive at home or work. Getting good rest, exercising and eating healthy are important for moms to feel at their best. It’s also important for

moms to prioritize regular visits to the doctor, dentist, and other appointments that maintain health. So often moms delay their own doctor visits to make time for their families, but routine checkups can prevent issues before they arise.

THE HOW Find your tribe. Having friends who understand what it’s like to raise children, work, handle the ups and downs of marriage, and maintain sanity is critical for moms to feel “normal” and supported. Mom groups such as MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers), neighborhood Facebook groups, mom/baby fitness classes, online meetups, playgroups and faith-based groups are great places to meet and connect with other moms.

Single moms: Read more about finding your tribe at www.sandiegofamily.com/parenting/ single-parent-support. Set aside time. Between working, running errands, the kids’ activities, housework and spending quality family time together, it can be difficult to find time for yourself. Spending time alone, with friends, and alone with your spouse are all important to feel energized for another day. Add space in the calendar to ensure these things happen on a regular basis and that childcare needs are met.

Exercise. Exercise not only keeps you healthy and feeling better, but it provides an energy boost for parenting demands. Working out or taking walks also offers alone time to listen to a podcast, audiobook or music. Exercising outside provides an added boost of vitamin D and improves mood.

Treat yourself. Occasionally treating yourself acknowledges that you work hard and deserve something special. You don’t have to spend a lot of time or money—it’s more about putting yourself first on occasion. Some ideas: get your favorite coffee drink, a new outfit, haircut, pedicure or sweet treat. Talk to someone. Talking to people about feelings and details of everyday life is helpful. If chatting with friends isn’t enough or you’re feeling depressed, it may be beneficial to talk to a counselor for unbiased advice. If you’re not sure where to start, dial 2-1-1 or visit www.211.org. Ask for help. Some moms have a hard time asking for help. But if a friend asks for help, there is no hesitation to jump in and assist. Give others a chance to support you—or set up a system of helping each other. Arrange a carpool or trade babysitting with a friend. If your significant other offers to help out, let him, even if it isn’t exactly the way you would have done it. Start a hobby. What do you love to do? Make time for your interests. Rediscover an old hobby or find a new one—reading, running, volunteering, sewing, crafting— whatever activity gets you excited. It’s not possible for busy moms to put themselves first all the time, but prioritizing time for yourself is crucial for mental and physical health, and will ultimately make you a better mom. v Sarah Lyons is a freelance writer.

Local Parks with Hidden Trails

Finding a trail in San Diego isn’t difficult—and

our city is full of avid hikers! Finding one that’s lesser known and kid-friendly? That can be more of a challenge. Fortunately, there are plenty of trails that offer solitude—you just have to know where to look. There may be one right under your nose, hidden in your favorite park.

Here are some of the best parks in San Diego County that have hidden trails for families to explore and escape from the daily hustle and bustle. Each of these parks offers everything that makes a great day: fun playgrounds, clean bathrooms, plentiful parking and, of course, beautiful hiking trails. Find more outdoor adventures at www.sandiegofamily.com/things-to-do/out-about.

Felicita County Park 742 Clarence Ln., Escondido Walking into this park, you can almost feel the rich Native American history, and it’s no wonder—this park is home to the oldest ancient oak trees in Southern California. With 2.5 miles of trails to explore, it’s a wonderful place to spend the day. The trails all loop around, so turn left or turn right when driving in—you can’t lose. Walk across one of the sweet creek bridges, skirt the creek side, and head up through the Upper Knoll to find yourself back at one of the two play areas. There are both paved and unpaved trails throughout the park, so take a stroller or explore by foot. If you’re a history buff, this park is a must-visit. Felicita County Park has the honor of being listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Book a guided interpretive hike to learn more about the rich history of the area: www.sdparks.org/content/sdparks/en/park-pages/Felicita.html. Insider’s tip: Parking is $3; there’s a pay station that accepts cash and cards upon arrival.

Balboa Park’s Palm Canyon 1549 El Prado, Downtown San Diego Covering two acres of Balboa Park is an out-of-this-world, winding trail lined with more than 450 palm trees. Exploring Palm Canyon is such a unique experience—follow the trail from the park all the way across the street to the Old Cactus Garden. The groomed trails are great for little explorers, and there are more than 50 species of palms to discover. Insider’s tip: Find the trail close to Pan American Plaza, across from Spreckels Organ Pavilion.

Otay Valley Regional Park 2155 Beyer Blvd, San Diego (South Bay) Extending from the San Diego Wildlife Refuge to I-805, Otay Valley Regional Park provides eight miles of trails for walking, hiking, biking, even riding horse. There are seven ponds to walk around, with plenty of benches and picnic tables for necessary snacks along the way. The park and its trails are mostly flat. If you choose the path to the Finney Overlook, you’ll find two unique structures shaped like the first gliders that flew over Otay Mesa in the 1880s. Insider’s tips: Find parking along Beyer Blvd, close to the ranger station. This park is a work in progress. Keep an eye out for fun new things coming!

Kate Sessions Park 5115 Soledad Rd. Pacific Beach Kate Sessions Park is known for its expansive views and perfectly placed picnic trees. In our family, this park is revered as one of the best spots to watch fireworks, but it’s also great for hiking and exploring. The park offers a .75-mile paved walking path around the park—perfect for stroller walks. If you want something a little more off road, head towards the playground to find the trailhead. You’ll discover jawdropping views of Mission Bay, SeaWorld, and downtown as you explore some of the 79 acres this park has to offer. Insider’s tip: If you want to avoid the playground distraction, enter along Soledad Rd. to access the trails.

Guajome Regional Park 3000 Guajome Lake Rd., Oceanside Driving up the coast to Oceanside promises a generous dose of ocean air and awesome views, but did you know there’s also a lake with marshland? Guajome is a unique park that offers four miles of trails to roam. Pass other San Diegans on horseback (share the trail!), enjoy lovely views, and keep an eye out for flocks of migratory birds known to inhabit the area. Insider’s tip: Bring defrosted peas, chopped lettuce, oats or birdseed to feed the ducks along the way (never bread or other snacks). v Local mom and San Diego blogger Sandra Page can be found adventuring on Instagram at @playdatesandpints.
