Healthy Routines for

Busy Families by Cassandra Padgett, MS, ACE Health Coach

School holidays like summer vacation and spring break can make tricky to stick with healthy habits. Just picture this: Extra screen time, more snacking, and staying up late. Having a routine in place can make it possible to prioritize the habits that matter most to you, while still enjoying the relaxed schedule. Kids thrive on routine, and planning for healthy habits can help improve health and wellbeing for the whole family, even during busy seasons. Having a schedule doesn’t mean having every moment of the day planned out, but rather, it helps to create a game plan for the family by incorporating the healthy habits you would like to prioritize. For example, consider a plan for when to use screen time, when to exercise or have outdoor play time, and how often you want to commit to eating meals as a family. Planning ahead can make it easier to follow through and create habits that stick.

Here are three routines that can improve the health of the whole family: The meal and snack routine Eating at the table on a set schedule can prevent grazing and can also ensure kids are hungry at mealtime, meaning they are more likely to eat their meal and try new foods -- a win-win if you have a picky eater! If your child is schoolaged, try following the meal schedule that they have at school. If not, come up with a schedule that works best for your family. Having a schedule can help to redirect the conversation when kids are frequently asking for snacks. When kids eat at the table without screens, they are able to tune into their hunger and fullness cues more effectively (versus eating distractedly in front of a screen). The bedtime routine An evening routine before bed can help kids begin to wind down and can promote more restful sleep. Having the same bedtime every night, as well as turning off screens one hour before bedtime, can help to improve sleep and make it easier to fall asleep. A bedtime routine can be simple! If you need some ideas, think of the five Bs – bathe, brush teeth, book, breathe, and bed! A calming connection with your child before bed (like reading

Cassandra Padgett is the Senior Health Educator for Children’s Primary Care Medical Group and a Health Coach for the WELL Clinic by CPCMG. The WELL Clinic supports kids and families in creating lasting healthy lifestyle changes.

a few books and taking some deep breaths together) makes it more likely they are ready to rest when it’s time for lights out. The family meal routine Eating as a family is one of the healthiest habits families can create. Kids who eat with the family at least three times per week have improved nutrition, get better grades, are less stressed, and have more confidence. If your family is busy with various activities at dinner time, try to have weekend meals or breakfast together instead.

Creating longlasting health habits starts with one small change at a time. Focus on the habit that is most important to you and build from there!

THE IMPORTANCE OF COVID-19 VACCINES FOR CHILDREN 5 TO 11 YEARS OLD Provided by Kelly Motadel, MD, MPH, and County Child Health Officer for the Health and Human Services Agency

It’s important for children ages 5-11 years old to get the COVID-19 vaccine because it can protect them, but also those around them who may be at even higher risk for severe disease and death. During the Omicron surge, unvaccinated children 5-11 years old had 2-3 times higher hospitalization rates than those who were vaccinated. If hospitalized, they are more likely to require a ventilator and/or admission to the intensive care unit. Additionally, children 5-11 years old are at the highest risk for Multi-system Inflammatory Syndrome of Childhood (MIS-C), a life-threatening illness associated with a current or recent COVID infection. Vaccines consistently have been shown to be safe and effective. Almost 10 million children 5-11 years old have been vaccinated and side effects were mild and brief. Natural immunity alone is less protective than full vaccination and it is unknown how long natural immunity truly lasts. With natural infection, children can suffer from long-COVID symptoms or MIS-C even if they only had mild illness when infected. Even if they have no symptoms, if they test positive, they will miss several days of school. What is often described as “mild illness” can still mean unnecessary suffering with several days of respiratory symptoms, fever, loss of taste or smell, and more. Children can get the COVID-19 vaccine at the same time or around the same time as any other vaccine. Those who are immunocompromised or have a current medical condition are encouraged to get the vaccine as they may be at higher risk for severe illness if they do get the COVID-19 infection. If you have any questions or concerns, talk to your pediatrician. For information on free vaccination sites, call 2-1-1 or visit coronavirus-SD.com to learn more.

Our San Diego

Families

Mother’s Day, Camps and More Fun Stuff We want to give a big shout-out to all San Diego moms on

May 8: Happy Mother’s Day! There are many moms who run their own businesses. Some started long ago and others in the past two years. We highlight 15 this month — read about them here and on pages 22 through 26. In our April issue, we covered how to discover your parenting personality through the Enneagram. This month on page 28 our Parenting with Purpose writer, Jody Cates, suggests using the Enneagram to discover and nurture your child’s unique personality. Knowing each of your personalities makes it easier to work together. With school getting out in a few weeks, it’s time to sign the kids up for fun summer camps and classes. Check the advertisements in this issue, talk with the kids and decide which ones they would like. There is more information about each camp on our website at www.sandiegofamily.com/ resources/summer-camps-and-programs/time-for-camp. Register now while there is still space. Read the article on page 16 for fun activities that help prepare kids for camp. I love the sleeping bag relay race idea. I really need to practice that one — especially with the down-filled bags. Look through the calendar of events and mark your calendar for family fun. Some of the events are back after a two-year hiatus, which is exciting for everyone. Again, I want to tell all our mom readers to enjoy Mother’s Day. It is so special to be a mom. Enjoy your family; They have helped make you that special mom.

Countdown to Camp!

Activities that prepare kids for summer fun

Coming off two years of chaos, shutdowns and uncertainty, this year’s summer camp season promises to be bigger and better than ever! Parents, take advantage of summer break to send the kids to camp—it’s a unique opportunity for them (and you!) to learn and grow in leaps and bounds.

16 • SanDiegofamily.com • May 2022

While you’re waiting for the epic camps you’ve chosen to start, embrace the summer camp spirit by engaging in camp-inspired activities at home. Many of these fun activities double as teachable moments as kids learn skills, get prepared for camp and learn self-sufficiency. Personalize reusable water bottles. Kids should always have a reusable water bottle, whether it’s day camp, overnight camp or a beach day, so this activity will help get your family through the summer. Purchase an eco-friendly bottle for each family member and personalize/decorate with name and your favorite decals. Make trail signs. Using rocks, pebbles or sticks, practice making and reading simple trail signs.

Have a cookout. Pull out the camp stove and make a meal on the patio. Your family may have so much fun with this that it becomes a regular weekend routine! Or, take it a step further and learn how to make a box oven for outdoor cooking: www.sandiegofamily.com/for-the-kids/ family-science/making-a-box-oven.

Pitch a tent in the backyard. Pitching a tent is a great lesson in patience and teamwork. Make sure everyone helps! Even if no one sleeps in it, a tent is a fun place to hang out and read or play games for the day. Have a sleeping bag relay race. Sleeping bag relays are something I did with my Girl Scouts in preparation for camp. You didn’t actually think I was going to roll everyone’s sleeping bags for them, did you? We did this relay over and over until everyone mastered rolling and securing their own bags. Craft a nature journal. Nature journals are a unique way to connect with the outdoors—either at camp or at home. Get instructions at www.sandiegofamily.com/for-the-kids/ crafts-for-kids/nature-journal-for-kids.

Let them pack. Parents, please teach kids how to pack for an overnight trip. Use progression like we do in Girl Scouts—start small and work towards more responsibility. When kids are little, give directions such as, “Choose five pairs of socks and eight t-shirts.” As they get older get less specific, but give more information. Such as, “We are taking a five-day trip. Most days will be warm, but it might rain. Put everything you think you need on your bed and I’ll come discuss it with you in half an hour.” It’s a learning process, so praise them for good decisions and gently correct where needed. My youngest daughter was packing without help (complete with her self-made checklist) by the time sixth grade camp came around.

Create a countdown to camp. Mark the camp start date on a calendar, so kids can see the day get closer. Or, make a paper chain and let kids remove a loop every day. Celebrate your new summer camp skills by roasting marshmallows and

telling stories around a firepit in the backyard. v Lisa Gipson is the managing editor of San Diego Family and mom to three daughters; she was a volunteer Girl Scout leader for 20 years.

Don’t carry the backpacks! Our job as parents is to train kids to be responsible, caring, independent contributors to the world. As difficult as it can be to watch children struggle, doing things for them that they can do for themselves actually stunts the growing process. So please, don’t carry your child’s backpack. We bought backpacks for each of the 10 girls in my Girl Scout troop when they were in first grade. We made sure they had the necessary day trip supplies inside (pen, small first aid kit,

nature journal or notebook, hair tie, bandana, water bottle, granola bar, etc.), but it was their responsibility to replenish supplies and carry their own gear. Always. If I was approached by a parent carrying a child’s backpack, that was promptly corrected. The girls carried those backpacks until they fell apart (the backpacks, not the girls!) in middle school. Carrying a child’s backpack may seem like an insignificant gesture, but it’s a wonderful opportunity to teach children responsibility.

Moms

that Mean Business Celebrating local entrepreneurs With Mother’s Day this month, there’s no better time to shine a light on local women who rock. We caught up with four San Diego business owners—all of them mothers—to learn about their brands and thoughts on entrepreneurship.

Turn to page 8 for details on how to win awesome products from these business owners.

Katie Sabin Just Add Sunshine Katie Sabin is the owner, designer and maker behind Just Add Sunshine. Her brand features colorful signs, bright stickers and positive messages. The Escondido mom of four began crafting consistently about 15 years ago, after the birth of her eldest sons, who are fraternal twins. “It was a great outlet for me from the everyday routine of life and newborns, especially in those early days when getting out and about with twins was tricky,” she says. Sabin started decorating frames and boxes with scrapbook paper and Mod Podge. Later, she ventured into painting and sign-making. She started to sell her creations at craft fairs, which was both fun and energizing. “It was like an awakening in me,” says Sabin. “I realized that being creative was open to everyone and could be showcased in many different ways.” A lifelong San Diegan, Sabin loves the beach and all things light and sunny. She draws inspiration from favorite quotes, poems and sayings, which she collects in a book. “The happy, colorful brightness in my signs and stickers, combined with the positivity of the messages makes me smile and I hope that others feel the same way.” Follow Just Add Sunshine on Instagram @JustAddSunshineInc and shop the store on Etsy at www.etsy.com/shop/justaddsunshineinc.

Dace Corlett Wild Crumb Bakery For 29 years, classically trained chef Dace Corlett was a dedicated stay-athome parent to her four children. Like many of us, the Poway mom began baking in earnest during lockdown. Harnessing that nervous, early-pandemic energy, Corlett set out to create the perfect sourdough. Around the same time, her youngest child, an 18-yearold ballet dancer, was invited to train professionally out of state. “Financially, COVID had been tough, so I knew I would have to get creative to help her to realize her dreams,” says Corlett. That’s how Wild Crumb Bakery came to be—a pinch of necessity and a heaping scoop of passion. Corlett bakes from a home kitchen as a fully licensed Cottage Food Operator. Everything is baked to order— fresh and delicious. Wild Crumb offers a unique selection of sourdough items like a Roasted Garlic Asiago Rosemary sourdough loaf, Sourdough Crumb Cake—even Salted Sourdough Chocolate Chip Cookies. Other menu highlights include garden focaccia, cupcakes and DIY cookie decorating sets. “Most people love to entertain, but don’t love being in the kitchen. I make it easy for them!” says Corlett. “I offer fast turnaround times and I care deeply that my customers have a good experience, right down to packaging. I want you to feel good when you open up your bag and see what is inside!” Orders can be placed via social media, phone or email. Simply choose the items you’d like and indicate the best time for pickup or limited delivery. Samantha Binkley Healthy On You Before launching her business, Samantha Binkley was a multi-platform technology marketer—skillfully navigating the male-dominated world of tech startups. While the challenging work and global travel were satisfying at first, she eventually craved better work-life balance. “I knew this was not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, but I didn’t have the time or space to figure it out,” says Binkley. “It wasn’t until my daughter went off to college that I felt I owed it to myself to pursue my passion.”

A long-time proponent of healthy eating, Binkley became a certified health coach and cooking instructor. Her business, Healthy On You, offers group cooking classes featuring healthy ingredients and her own organic spice blends. Students enjoy private, hands-on instruction in Binkley’s Del Mar home while a curated playlist sets the mood. After class, everyone sits to enjoy the four-course meal together. “My customers like my classes because I teach them that cooking and eating healthy home-cooked food doesn’t mean sacrificing good flavor. I show them what is possible, and I do it in a fun way,” says Binkley.

Today, Healthy On You has expanded to include Binkley’s organic, flavor-boosting spice and salt blends—all free from preservatives, additives and fillers. The blends are available in over 50 retail stores and online, where customers can download the playlist for each blend. “Just a couple of shakes of our spice blends and your food tastes like you’ve been hard at work for hours in the kitchen,” says Binkley. “It’s the convenience of knowing you are getting a highquality product that you can trust will make your recipes taste great.”

Advice for women who would like to pursue entrepreneurship: My advice is to go for it. Your children will be happy if they see you happy. That was the inspiration for me to follow my passion. The biggest challenge was making the decision to get started. Once I took the initial step to set up my business and get a website, then I just had to follow through. When the ball starts rolling, it’s difficult to stop it when you are determined! ~Samantha Binkley I say go for it! I was terrified, honestly. If there was not a real need to fund my daughter’s ballet training, I don’t know that I would have had the nerve to put my bread out there for sale. Now that I have, I can’t imagine doing anything else with my days! ~Dace Corlett All mothers have inside them everything that is needed to create a business. If we have the ability to create life, we have the ability to create anything. Once you are clear about what you want and how you want it, focus on what [the business] needs. Say no to what makes you unproductive. Organize your priorities and do something every day that takes you where you want to go. Believe and visualize that you can do it and you will. ~Sandra Brigman

Sandra Brigman Kidwings Nature School Tierrasanta mom Sandra Brigman always knew she would become a business owner, but it took years to uncover the right idea. After leaving a series of jobs that weren’t quite right, the Colombian native devoted two years to world travel while training to become a life coach and reiki master. It was around this time that Brigman began to envision a “school of love” for children. “I concluded that many of the issues we have in our adult life are directly linked to our childhood,” she says. But the dream would have to wait. When her travels ended, she was unemployed, newly single, and pregnant with her daughter Sabrina, now 7. She drove Uber to pay the bills until the time was right. “As my daughter started to grow, my desire to create a space for kids started to grow as well,” says Brigman. She

Finding time to make and create while raising children can be a juggling act. But if you consistently work on finding and using pockets of time in your day, week or month, little by little you will make progress. Just start! ~Katie Sabin studied child development, focusing on alternative approaches like Waldorf, Reggio Emilia and the Forest Schools. She took teaching jobs, joined groups and interviewed program directors in an effort to learn as much as possible. Finally, in 2018 she was ready to launch her own program. Kidwings Nature School is a bilingual outdoor school and summer camp for ages 3 to 11. “My program combines my experience as a mother, emotional coach, energy healer and Waldorf educator to create a space for children to be free of society’s demands and expectations, allowing them to play freely in nature,” she says. According to Brigman, students respond beautifully to outdoor school. “The simple act of providing unrestricted outdoor play for children with plenty of time to climb trees, catch frogs, and use imagination sets

the scene for rich sensory experiences.” Sensory experiences are especially beneficial for children with special needs, who begin to feel more calm, creative and free as they interact with nature. “It is like having occupational therapy every day, because they are working on balance, coordination, motor skills, negotiation, teamwork, socio-emotional learning and more,” she says. The school meets at rotating locations around the county, allowing children to explore new outdoor spaces. To learn more about the school or summer camp experience, visit www.kidwingsnatureschool.com. v Anne Malinoski is a contributing writer. She lives in Santee with her husband and two sons.

Parenting with Purpose

Nurture Your Child’s Unique Personality

others by being kind and compliant. Sensitive to disapproval and criticism, they need to know they are loved for who they are. Notice and thank them when they clear the table or care for younger siblings. Encourage them to take time for themselves and teach them how to be more direct and assertive about their own needs.

3 The Achiever. Threes love it when people feel proud of them. They are busy, active goal-setters who need to hear applause when they put on a play for the neighbors or write a good paper. Their need to achieve can lead to stress and fatigue, so build rest into their schedules and help them balance their desire to impress others with discovering and pursuing their own interests. 4

Did you miss part one of this two-part series? Discover how to use the Enneagram to identify your parenting personality in our April issue at www.sandiegofamily.com/magazines/san-diego-family-digital-issues.

What parent hasn’t wished they could get inside their children’s minds to know what they were thinking? The Enneagram won’t make you a mind reader, but it helps you understand why your kids do the things they do and what they need from you as a parent. The Enneagram is an assessment tool that identifies the internal motivation of nine distinct personality types and how they relate to one another. When used in parenting, it provides valuable insight that boosts your ability to nurture your child’s unique personality. What to know before adding the Enneagram to your parenting toolbox. Even the most intuitive parents can’t be sure of a child’s internal motivation. That’s why it’s best to resist assigning specific types to children—something only they can do when they grow up. Instead, use the Enneagram to watch for potential personality styles that help you better understand and relate to your child. Maintain a healthy sense of curiosity

28 • SanDiegofamily.com • May 2022

and stay flexible about what you observe. If you see traits that seem to indicate a certain type, try responding in a way that resonates with that type. If successful, add it to your parenting tool kit. If not, keep watching for ways your children indicate how they see themselves. How Enneagram styles show up in children. The following is adapted from The Enneagram of Parenting: The 9 Types of Children and How to Raise Them Successfully by Elizabeth Wagele.

The Romantic. Fours are creative, noticing small details and finding meaning in the world around them. They have big feelings that can create family drama and cause them to feel misunderstood or like they don’t belong. Help them feel seen and heard by encouraging creativity and listening carefully to their feelings while remaining objective and calm. Don’t take outbursts personally and model healthy ways to manage intense emotions.

5 The Observer. Fives are bright, curious and love learning. They have independent minds and ask a lot of questions. It wouldn’t be surprising to find them alone in their room during a family gathering. Honor their need for quiet space to think and learn while helping them make time for having fun with family and friends.

1 The Reformer. Ones have a strong desire to do the right thing and are conscientious, hardworking and responsible. They may experience anxiety or hold back negative emotions believing “good” children don’t get angry. Encourage them to play and be silly, help them accept that mistakes are OK, and listen with empathy when they feel disappointed in themselves or others.

6 The Questioner. In their quest for security, sixes can seem either shy and fearful or aggressive and fearless. They tend to worry, take extra precautions and feel more comfortable with order and predictability. Practice patience and understanding when they shed tears on the first day of school or call in the middle of the night to be picked up from a sleepover. Introduce change slowly and provide structure and clear limits to help them feel secure.

The Helper. Twos have a natural ability for helping and try hard to please

The Enthusiast. Sevens are charming, confident adventurers

who love to have fun. They can grow bored quickly and may have a hard time focusing. They need to know you enjoy being with them, so adventure together, laugh at their jokes and turn the drudgery of chores into fun. Their confidence may cover up hurt feelings or anxiety, so offer consistent care and concern for their feelings and help them learn to stay focused and resolve conflicts.

8 The Challenger. Eights are independent, exuberant, and have inner strength and a fighting spirit. They look out for their friends and defend those who can’t protect themselves. Eights like to take charge and might have trouble controlling anger. Set healthy boundaries and help them find positive, constructive ways to channel energy, like getting outdoors and moving their bodies. 9

The Peacemaker. Nines try to avoid conflict and maintain harmony. They tend to give in to keep the peace, fearing others won’t like them if they disagree. Nines can feel responsible for making sure everyone else is OK or go along with a peer group making poor decisions. Encourage nines to share thoughts by giving them opportunities to speak their mind. Express often how valuable they are and how much you enjoy being with them. Tap into the parenting power of the Enneagram. Knowing your child’s Enneagram style is helpful. But the best place to start is by identifying your own Enneagram type. Understanding how it influences your parenting style, and how the different types within your family interact, is what makes the Enneagram a powerful parenting tool. Last month’s article includes information about where to take a free online assessment (see the directive on the previous page). Using the Enneagram in parenting can help create empathy, improve communication, and strengthen the connection between you and your kids. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of your kids and discover how to best support and nurture their unique personalities. v Jody Lee Cates is a local mom and awardwinning writer who blogs about healthy relationships at www.jodyleecates.com.

Celebrate AAPI Heritage Month Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month is a celebration of

Make

Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. The term AAPI includes people with origins from dozens of countries from the continent of Asia and the Pacific Islands of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. Learn more at www.asianpacificheritage.gov. There are many ways to honor, learn about and dive into AAPI culture; admittedly, most of the ideas here have to do with food. But hey, food is a fun (and often adventurous) way to explore other cultures, and Asian food is some of the best on the planet in my opinion. So, there’s that!

Tapa cloth, typically made from mulberry or fig tree bark, can be found throughout the Pacific Islands from Hawaii to Fiji to Papua New Guinea. While “tapa” is the universally known term, it has different names on different islands: in Samoa, it is called siapo; in Hawaii, kapa; and in Fiji, masi. Our “Art with Alyssa” contributor provides instructions for this art project, inspired by traditional tapa cloths, at www.sandiegofamily.com/ for-the-kids/crafts-for-kids.

Visit

San Diego is no stranger to Asian cuisine. Sure, you can visit the Convoy District for dozens of great Asian restaurants, but a quick search on Eater San Diego or Yelp will reveal that there are many hot spots throughout the county. Along the same lines, if you’ve never visited an Asian grocery store, you’re really missing out on an educational and fascinating food adventure. Many also have bakeries and eateries inside where you can grab a quick (and delicious) bite. We recommend: • • • • •

H Mart, Mira Mesa Zion Market, Clairemont 99 Ranch Market, Clairemont Lucky Seafood, Mira Mesa Mitsuwa Marketplace, Kearny Mesa

Make your own Shichimi Togarashi (Japanese spice blend) which is used to flavor udon noodles, rice dishes, soups, grilled meats, vegetables and more. In a food processor, pulse half a sheet of nori (dried seaweed) into fine flakes; combine with 1 tablespoon each granulated orange peel and ground black pepper, 2 teaspoons each dried minced garlic, sesame seeds, poppy seeds and flaky salt, and 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper. For a quick taste, try sprinkling some on a bagel and cream cheese. This recipe provided by The RecipeA-Day Kids Cookbook by Maile Carpenter and the editors at Food Network Magazine.

Read

As you know, consistent exposure to children’s books that feature characters of various ethnicities helps develop acceptance and understanding of other cultures. As you continue to diversify your family’s bookshelves, be sure to include books with Asian characters. Asian Adventures A–Z by Yobe Qiu is a thrilling way to practice the alphabet while learning about various foods, traditions and cultures of Asian countries highlighted on each colorful page. The Katha Chest by Radhiah Chowdhury is the story 6-year-old Asiya, who loves to go through her grandmother’s big chest of quilts that tell stories of the women in her family. Beautifully illustrated by Lavanya Naidu.

Indulge

Finish your AAPI celebration with a sweet treat from one of these popular dessert shops: SomiSomi, Mira Mesa & Kearny Mesa. Try the ahboong, fish-shaped Korean “cone” filled with soft serve. Iceskimo, Chula Vista, Kearny Mesa, Del Mar. Known for Taiwanese shaved snow. Bing Haus, Kearny Mesa. Try the Thai-style rolled ice cream or mochi donuts. MNGO Café, Kearny Mesa. Known for Japanese snow ice and mango deliciousness. Snoice, Spring Valley. Try the shaved snow or Filipino halo halo. Boba Bar and Desserts, Kearny Mesa. Try the puffles (puffy waffles) filled with frozen custard and toppings. 85°C Bakery, four SD County locations. Taiwanese breads and sweet treats such as berrytale, milk pudding, matcha choco bun and much more. Get more ideas in the full article at www.sandiegofamily.com/ things-to-do/seasonalhappenings. v Lisa Gipson, managing editor at San Diego Family, can often be found eating at Kiin Extraordinary Thai at Del Mar’s Sky Deck or at Shank & Bône in North Park.
