It’s always in season to express gratitude and help others. What are some of the ways your family gives back to the community? Anne Malinoski contributing writer My boys (ages 3 and 6) love to help with food drives and school supply drives. We always have a good conversation about the community we’re serving and it’s something they can both fully participate in. Randy Hahn, marketing representative My wife Thereece spends countless hours helping plan our community’s annual Clairemont Family Day. Our whole family helps set up the venue and clean up afterwards. I recently had the privilege of serving on the March of Dimes Executive Gala Committee, which helps support healthy moms and babies with an annual fundraising event. Nicole Maggio marketing representative My husband and I give back by being foster parents. There are so many local children in need of a loving home. Foster parenting can be challenging, but the experience of supporting a child in this way is incredibly rewarding.

Tony Andrews, marketing representative My family volunteered downtown at a kitchen that feeds the homeless population. We also went to the Gary & Mary West Senior Wellness Center to serve food, play games and talk with senior citizens. Both were great learning experiences that helped us appreciate what we have and what it means to serve others.

Beatriz De Oliveira Four years ago, 17-year-old Beatriz De Oliveira of Carmel Valley was donating toys at a daycare in her native country of Brazil when she noticed something surprising—the children had no books to read. She was disheartened to learn that most childcare centers in Brazil lack funding for more than the most basic supplies. Beatriz decided to act. She founded Books for a Change to place books in the hands of children in at-risk areas and developing countries. Books for a Change has touched the lives of nearly 10,000 children in Brazil, San Diego and Mexico, having raised $5,000 plus more than 1,000 donated books. In four years, the organization has grown to include 200 volunteers and five high school chapters. For her outstanding leadership and service,

Beatriz received a 2019 Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Award—a prestigious national honor that recognizes Jewish teens committed to tikkun olam (repairing the world). Beatriz, a senior at Torrey Pines High School, is currently designing a literacy curriculum to be used by daycare providers in developing countries. Ethan’s posts convey the worries and triumphs of his life with unflinching honesty. His readers often interact on the blog with expressions of gratitude and hope. “Their messages and comments brighten my day and remind me of why I do what I do,” says Ethan. Kenan Pala Inspired by the volunteerism of his immigrant parents, 15-year-old Kenan Pala of Rancho Bernardo spent his early years serving others at shelters, food banks and local schools. Community service became a passion that he wanted to share with his peers. Unfortunately, many organizations don’t allow children to volunteer. That’s why Kenan founded Kids 4 Community—a nonprofit that provides service opportunities especially for young people.

“Volunteering should be part of every child’s life because not only are you helping others, you are also learning who you are—and becoming a better person by doing so,” says Kenan. Kenan’s nonprofit grew from his extraordinary service record. In middle school, he enlisted his Francis Parker classmates to collect cereal boxes for a local food bank. Together, they set the Guinness World Record for largest mosaic made from cardboard boxes, bringing attention to their efforts and inspiring more kids to give back. Today his organization mobilizes youth volunteers to feed the homeless at monthly dinner events, create care packages for disaster victims and adopt local families to help with their basic needs. Daniella and Gabriel Benitez Two years ago, a service trip to Tijuana changed everything for Carmel Valley siblings Daniella (14) and Gabriel Benitez (13). Along with classmates from Notre Dame Academy, they raised funds and traveled across the border to assist nonprofit Build a Miracle (BAM) with the construction of a new home for an impoverished family. The families BAM serves are either homeless or living in shacks. Each project lifts one family from destitute conditions into a fully furnished home with plumbing and electricity. Daniella, now a student at Cathedral Catholic High School, was so moved by the experience that she committed herself to organizing the construction of one home per year. “Knowing that there are so many people to help makes me sad, but knowing that I’m in the position to help others keeps me humble and it makes me happy to help them,” says Daniella. To reach her goal, Daniella met with BAM founders and made a plan. She would organize a team of 16 kids, who would each be responsible for raising $1,000 towards the $16,000 required to complete a home. She rallied the volunteers, scheduled the build dates, and coordinated with BAM leaders to provide another incredible gift to

a family in need. The next year, her younger brother Gabriel was ready to organize his own additional team of 16 fundraisers. The siblings have been rocketing forward ever since, gathering attention and large donations from the likes of Ryan Seacrest, Mario and Courtney Lopez and Real Housewife Phaedra Parks. An anonymous donor matched their efforts to fund two more houses. Then, siblings were gifted an additional $16,000 from GAF roofing when they appeared on The Today Show, bringing their impact to a total of 6 homes built to date with another 5 planned. According to Gabriel, there will be many more to come. “When we go down and experience first-hand how emotional and inspiring this is, and how the families burst into tears when they walk into the doors of a real home, it’s an experience we can’t forget and we want to keep going,” he says.
