Families

Thankfulness Goes a Long Way! Thanksgiving Day is here again, but we are thankful every day. I am thankful for my family, my health and food on our table. Not everyone is in the same situation. We pray those less fortunate get the help they need. Many San Diego County residents are generous and helpful — we thank you! Thanks to the military for keeping our country safe, and to first responders for coming to the rescue when needed. San Diego Family is thankful for our readers and advertisers. We love connecting you every month. Our advertisers make it possible to provide Family Magazine for free to readers. Please thank them when using their services. I am thankful for my staff at San Diego Family. They work together as a family and for the betterment of our company. A BIG thank you! Have a great Thanksgiving season! Turkey and pumpkin pie — here we come!

It’s always in season to express gratitude and help others. What are some of the ways your family gives back to the community? Anne Malinoski contributing writer My boys (ages 3 and 6) love to help with food drives and school supply drives. We always have a good conversation about the community we’re serving and it’s something they can both fully participate in. Randy Hahn, marketing representative My wife Thereece spends countless hours helping plan our community’s annual Clairemont Family Day. Our whole family helps set up the venue and clean up afterwards. I recently had the privilege of serving on the March of Dimes Executive Gala Committee, which helps support healthy moms and babies with an annual fundraising event. Nicole Maggio marketing representative My husband and I give back by being foster parents. There are so many local children in need of a loving home. Foster parenting can be challenging, but the experience of supporting a child in this way is incredibly rewarding.

Tony Andrews, marketing representative My family volunteered downtown at a kitchen that feeds the homeless population. We also went to the Gary & Mary West Senior Wellness Center to serve food, play games and talk with senior citizens. Both were great learning experiences that helped us appreciate what we have and what it means to serve others.

Get a Taste of Culture at Local Bakeries Want to teach kids about world

cultures? Start with dessert! Around the globe, sweet treats are tied to important celebrations that make a culture unique. Often, they showcase a society’s most beloved ingredients. Here are San Diego County bakeries that offer a delightful taste of the cookies, cakes and tarts that represent our population’s diverse food traditions. Plan a “pastry crawl” with your family and tour the world without leaving home! This would also be fun to do with out-of-town guests during the holidays. Le Parfait Paris Point Loma www.leparfaitparis.com Located in Liberty Public Market, this authentic patisserie and boulangerie offers French favorites like croissant aux amandes (almond croissant) and crème brûlée. Children are drawn to the bakery’s selection of colorful macarons—delicate, sandwich-style cookies filled with jam or ganache. Pastries are baked fresh daily and each item is made by hand. Owner Ludi Mas says French desserts contain minimal added sugar, because ingredients are caramelized to enhance natural sweetness. The menu includes crepes, espresso and full-leaf teas. Additional locations are in the Gaslamp and Fashion Valley Mall. Gluten-free and dairy-free items available.

Egg-free and gluten-free options available. The London Bakery Ramona www.eatlondonbakery.com This quaint British bakery is nestled in the heart of Old Town Ramona. An inviting tearoom delights the senses with antique-style décor and the aroma of buttery pastries from across the pond. Making a

Difference in the World

Despite the pressures of modern

childhood, there are plenty of kids who demonstrate generosity and concern for their communities and others around the world. These local kids have gone above and beyond to make an impact—take a look at their incredible stories.

Beatriz De Oliveira Four years ago, 17-year-old Beatriz De Oliveira of Carmel Valley was donating toys at a daycare in her native country of Brazil when she noticed something surprising—the children had no books to read. She was disheartened to learn that most childcare centers in Brazil lack funding for more than the most basic supplies. Beatriz decided to act. She founded Books for a Change to place books in the hands of children in at-risk areas and developing countries. Books for a Change has touched the lives of nearly 10,000 children in Brazil, San Diego and Mexico, having raised $5,000 plus more than 1,000 donated books. In four years, the organization has grown to include 200 volunteers and five high school chapters. For her outstanding leadership and service,

20 • SanDiegofamily.com • November 2019

Beatriz received a 2019 Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Award—a prestigious national honor that recognizes Jewish teens committed to tikkun olam (repairing the world). Beatriz, a senior at Torrey Pines High School, is currently designing a literacy curriculum to be used by daycare providers in developing countries. She’s also working on a video series in Portuguese that will help childcare workers learn to read aloud in an engaging manner—a proven strategy for promoting childhood language development. “Anytime that work becomes difficult, I remind myself of the magic that we bring to every child that comes in contact with a book,” says Beatriz. Follow Books for a Change on Facebook @BooksforaChange or visit the website at www.booksforachange.org.

Also a Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Award winner, Ethan Hirschberg, 18, of Rancho La Costa was diagnosed with high-functioning autism at the age of 2. In 2017, he took a class at his local temple and was inspired by a lesson on “creator versus victim theory.” It states that in the face of uncontrollable life circumstances one can either choose to feel like a victim or a creator—building the life one desires. Ethan’s choice was clear. He founded The Journey Through Autism—a blog where he shares personal experiences, insight and advice to anyone affected by autism. Ethan’s posts convey the worries and triumphs of his life with unflinching honesty. His readers often interact on the blog with expressions of gratitude and hope. “Their messages and comments brighten my day and remind me of why I do what I do,” says Ethan. In addition to his 40,000 blog readers in 50 countries, The San Dieguito High School senior has also reached thousands as a motivational speaker. Through his work, he aims to educate the public about autism, decrease instances of bullying and improve employment rates for those with autism. Read the blog at: www. thejourneythroughautism.com. Do you want YOUR CHILD to APPEAR on the cover of

Kenan Pala Inspired by the volunteerism of his immigrant parents, 15-year-old Kenan Pala of Rancho Bernardo spent his early years serving others at shelters, food banks and local schools. Community service became a passion that he wanted to share with his peers. Unfortunately, many organizations don’t allow children to volunteer. That’s why Kenan founded Kids 4 Community—a nonprofit that provides service opportunities especially for young people.

“Volunteering should be part of every child’s life because not only are you helping others, you are also learning who you are—and becoming a better person by doing so,” says Kenan. Kenan’s nonprofit grew from his extraordinary service record. In middle school, he enlisted his Francis Parker classmates to collect cereal boxes for a local food bank. Together, they set the Guinness World Record for largest mosaic made from cardboard boxes, bringing attention to their efforts and inspiring more kids to give back. Today his organization mobilizes youth volunteers to feed the homeless at monthly dinner events, create care packages for disaster victims and adopt local families to help with their basic needs. To learn more about Kenan’s efforts and find upcoming service opportunities, visit his website at www.kids4.org or on Facebook @kids4org.

Daniella and Gabriel Benitez Two years ago, a service trip to Tijuana changed everything for Carmel Valley siblings Daniella (14) and Gabriel Benitez (13). Along with classmates from Notre Dame Academy, they raised funds and traveled across the border to assist nonprofit Build a Miracle (BAM) with the construction of a new home for an impoverished family. The families BAM serves are either homeless or living in shacks. Each project lifts one family from destitute conditions into a fully furnished home with plumbing and electricity. Daniella, now a student at Cathedral Catholic High School, was so moved by the experience that she committed herself to organizing the construction of one home per year. “Knowing that there are so many people to help makes me sad, but knowing that I’m in the position to help others keeps me humble and it makes me happy to help them,” says Daniella. To reach her goal, Daniella met with BAM founders and made a plan. She would organize a team of 16 kids, who would each be responsible for raising $1,000 towards the $16,000 required to complete a home. She rallied the volunteers, scheduled the build dates, and coordinated with BAM leaders to provide another incredible gift to

a family in need. The next year, her younger brother Gabriel was ready to organize his own additional team of 16 fundraisers. The siblings have been rocketing forward ever since, gathering attention and large donations from the likes of Ryan Seacrest, Mario and Courtney Lopez and Real Housewife Phaedra Parks. An anonymous donor matched their efforts to fund two more houses. Then, siblings were gifted an additional $16,000 from GAF roofing when they appeared on The Today Show, bringing their impact to a total of 6 homes built to date with another 5 planned. According to Gabriel, there will be many more to come. “When we go down and experience first-hand how emotional and inspiring this is, and how the families burst into tears when they walk into the doors of a real home, it’s an experience we can’t forget and we want to keep going,” he says. Follow the Benitez siblings on their public Instagram accounts @daniellamariebenitez and @gabrielnaseembenitez. v Anne Malinoski is a contributing writer and mother of two boys. Her favorite childhood service project was planting trees with her Girl Scout troop.

The

Special Needs Resource Foundation of San Diego (SNRFSD) supports the special needs community of San Diego and Imperial Counties by providing extensive resources online and in Flourishing Families (an annual publication specifically for families with special needs), emailing relevant articles and events to subscribers via bimonthly eNewsletter, and by hosting a fun annual event (the All-Inclusive Day of Play & Resource Fair), which is free and open to the public. Join SNRFSD in supporting families and children with special needs by making a financial donation to this community-centric nonprofit at www.SNRFSD.org.

Since its inception in 1961, Home of Guiding Hands has been committed to

providing quality community support, critical housing and life skills training for people in San Diego County who have developmental disabilities. The organization connects individuals, like Natalie, with loving families in the community. Natalie has been living with Denise for over a year. They have a bond that will last a lifetime. Home of Guiding Hands is seeking caring people to open their homes as foster care providers for adults with special needs. Canyon Rim Children's Center “Dedicated to the individuality of children.”

Canyon Rim Children’s Center (CRCC) has been providing high quality, enrichment, preschool programs for San Diego children since 1998. We are a full day, year round, enrichment program. Our learning philosophy is based on developmentally appropriate practices inspired by the schools in Reggio Emilia, Italy. Our developmental, play-based, preschool serves children ages two through six.

At CRCC, we strive to maintain child to teacher ratios lower than those required by the State of California. Our teachers’ educational credentials exceed those as specified by the State. Our professional staff creates a safe and caring environment where the emphasis is on learning through play. As Fred Rogers, a.k.a., “Mr. Rogers” said, “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.” We recognize each child is a unique person with individual rates of growth. Our goal is to meet each child’s

emotional, social, cognitive and physical needs in a relaxed, loving environment, free from personal criticism and excessive competition. Activities in art, music, math, language, science, dramatic play, fine and gross motor development are fashioned to facilitate transition from one developmental stage to the next. Our teachers also use our wellequipped, natural playgrounds to support exploration and promote physical development. Natural outdoor spaces enhance curiosity & encourage children to develop an appreciation and awareness of nature. At CRCC, children develop the skills of observation, inquiry, concentration, problem solving, and self-reliance. Our structured, yet open-ended program prepares each child to utilize his or her intellectual and creative abilities in future learning tasks. Here we work to give each child the tools and the foundation on which to build a lifetime of learning. Kindergarten teachers love our CRCC children!
