Halloween, Fall and other Fun Activities The kids have been in school for a month or so, learning amazing stuff with their friends. Fall is here (even though it may still be warm out) and it’s time for pumpkin bread and cinnamon spiced apple cider. Turn to page 28 for 26 great ideas to do this fall. As you go through the list, mark the ones you would like to do. Start making annual fall traditions. Halloween is at the end of the month. Our neighborhood has become younger in the past several years so we enjoy Halloween again at home. It is fun to have the little neighbor kids come to our door! Why to Develop a

GROWTH MINDSET in Kids

Is intelligence something you’re born

with or something that develops? Is failure an opportunity to learn and grow, or something that impedes success? How a parent answers these questions greatly impacts children. Their responses have everything to do with how kids see themselves—how they perceive the ability to improve and learn from mistakes. Over the past decade, educators and psychologists have been researching the effects of words and actions on a child’s problemsolving skills and resilience. The ideology (called “growth mindset”) is very popular in education right now. Here’s what you need to know.

What is Growth Mindset? Carol Dweck, Stanford University psychologist and author of Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, found during her study of children that the most successful kids were those who were open to new approaches to problems

and willing to continue learning in the face of failure. She labeled this resilience and willingness to overcome obstacles “growth mindset.”

“When we go over the students’ work, I’m not focused on the right or wrong answer. We look at the process that led to the answer and if the answer is wrong, where the understanding broke down. Students become very good at finding their own mistakes and knowing the difference between a careless error and a breakdown in understanding. When you don’t make mistakes, no learning is happening. I believe it is mistakes—and the analysis of those mistakes—that lead to success.” - Amy Jackson, fifth grade teacher, Green Elementary in San Carlos

Growth Mindset vs. Fixed Mindset A fixed mindset is based on the belief that one’s abilities and talents are inherent or natural. Like many of my generation, I grew up with a fixed mindset. “I’m not a math person” runs through my head each time I try to calculate a tip at a restaurant. Why is this a problem? Those who adopt a fixed mindset are more likely to fear failure, give up and create labels for themselves. The idea behind growth mindset is that with practice, the right strategies, and a willingness to learn from mistakes, people can grow to become more intelligent. By adopting a growth mindset, kids see mistakes more as a challenge and don’t mind failure because they realize it’s a path to improvement when they persevere. When parents focus more on a child’s hard work, instead of how smart she is, it fosters growth. Failure doesn’t

The Power of Yet Dweck’s research began when she observed a Chicago school district that gave the grade “not yet” instead of a failing grade. Teachers are using the concept to transform a student’s feeling of “I’ll never get this…it’s too hard” to “I don’t understand this yet.” It encourages students to try new strategies until they get it right. The power of “yet” creates persistence in children. “You can be extremely successful and smart, and there is always room for growth,” Jackson says. “It makes learning fun because it is like a quest— you never have to reach an ending.” It also reduces anxiety in kids because they no longer fear having the wrong answer. “The first year I tried this, I worked with a group of students from low socio-economic [backgrounds] who faced issues that got in the way of learning,” says Jackson. “They started to feel like they had some control over learning. There was a willingness to try. The mood became lighter and kids started using words like ‘conquer’, ‘fight’, ‘struggle’ and ‘victorious.’ It was really neat to see.”

Toddlers often start off unstoppable and headstrong in their determination, but by the time they reach middle school, many struggle with academic and social demands and adopt lower standards for themselves. Dweck’s studies show that junior high students with a fixed mindset are more likely to cheat than feel dumb by making mistakes or failing. Many middle schools provide opportunities for kids to discuss mistakes and develop strategies for handling failure.

How Parents Can Encourage Growth Mindset Dweck advises parents to praise kids in effective ways. Instead of telling a child “You’re so smart”, be more specific. Praising effort and hard work makes kids work harder and want to grow. Praising intelligence just makes kids want to get the right answer. Dweck emphasizes the importance of praising a child’s process, effort, perseverance and improvement to help grow confidence and resilience. Be sincere; praise growth and good habits. “I’m bored,” my 11-yearold daughter grumbled as she collapsed on to the couch. It was a rare unscheduled moment. I cringed because I know what can occur when she has a spontaneous second. At the age of 3, I assumed she was quietly playing with toys, only to discover the entire wall covered with crayon. We are happier now that she’s in art classes. My daughter prefers to be busy, which is why she participates in multiple extracurricular activities, ranging from sign language to swim team. There are many benefits to having scheduled activities for children. Research by National Center for Education Statistics shows that students who participate in afterschool activities have better school attendance, higher levels of achievement and aspirations for higher education.

Better Academic Performance Research shows that students who participate in extracurricular

activities perform better in school. Douglas Reeves studied data at a local high school and found students who were in three or four afterschool programs had dramatically better grades than those who participated in none. A study by the College Board found high school extracurricular participation is correlated with significantly higher SAT scores. Plus, sometimes kids learn skills that can be applied to school. For example, sports such as basketball, baseball and football use statistics, addition, subtraction, probability and geometry, which support math skills. My daughter was in the garden club and

used information she learned about plants in science class.

More Adaptable When children participate in more than one activity, they experience multiple coaches or teachers with different rules and expectations. They have the opportunity to meet kids with a range of personalities and interests. These interactions teach children how to be adaptable to various types of people and situations. Time Management It is possible to have too many activities, so manage time wisely. Always be cognizant of your child’s energy level. When my daughter needs to skip an activity once in a while, I let her. When she wasn’t enthusiastic about going to gymnastics anymore, we decided not to sign her up for the next session. There aren’t many

holiday traditions that render children as giddy as Trick-or-Treating. None of the other thrills of Halloween—decorating the house, wearing a favorite costume, carving pumpkins, attending a school carnival—stack up to the sheer magnificence of collecting candy from each of the neighbors. Check out these tips for a fun, safe night of Trick-or-Treating!

Keep Track of your Crew It’s best to stick together on Halloween. Keep everyone in sight with matching glowsticks or reflective tape. Little ones can be corralled in a wagon or stroller. If your group is large, assign buddies to look out for one another.

Dinner First Eat before you go, so kids can dive straight into the sweets when they get home. Full bellies might also prevent them from sneaking bites of candy before you’ve had a chance to inspect it.

Be Cautious Remind kids to stay on sidewalks and doorsteps. Stress that they should never approach a vehicle or enter a house to accept candy.

Establish a Timeline Tell kids what time you’re heading home and stick to it. Consider the one-hour rule: One hour of Trick-or-

Treating that concludes at least one full hour before bedtime. It’s a school night, after all! Take toddlers out as early as possible, when there’s more visibility and fewer big kids in scary costumes.

Safety Check Before the kids dig in, check candy and collected items for anything that could have been tampered with. Toss all candy with loose or missing wrappers and remove homemade treats. Better safe than sick!

Candy Rules Establish house rules about Halloween candy and make them known in advance. Some parents set a limit on the number of candies kids may consume each day—understanding that this rule requires several days of diligent monitoring. Other families allow kids to eat all they want on Oct. 31, with the expectation that the rest is donated the next day. Operation Gratitude distributes candy donations to deployed troops and first responders. Helping Kids Navigate

Most often, friendships serve as

a positive force in children’s lives, helping to cement a sense of identity and belonging while kids learn realworld lessons in sharing, empathy and kindness. Friends can impart the type of “peer pressure” that spurs growth of positive personality characteristics like tenacity and generosity. But there’s a dark side to childhood friendships. When things like bullying, gossip or jealousy take hold, a child’s health and happiness can suffer. Research from the University of Alabama links jealousy in adolescent friendships to low self-worth, aggression and loneliness. Sound familiar? Here’s how to help kids navigate toxic friendships and seek out the positive, fulfilling friendships they need.

Budding Buds (ages 0-5) From playdates to the playground, toddlerhood presents plenty of opportunities to begin teaching

traits of a good friend. “Parents can encourage their child to develop positive friendships by teaching children at an early age about healthy relationships,” says Josie ClarkTrippodo, a licensed family therapist. “Parents can start these conversations with kids by asking what they think the characteristics of a good friend are and teaching children to display good friendship qualities,”—kindness, empathy and good listening skills. When tots find themselves in a friendship tiff, caregivers should wait a beat to see if kids can work it out themselves. Often, a simple, “Are you being a friend?” encourages children toward more pro-social behavior. When kids seem stuck, acknowledge both children in the conflict without taking “sides,” calmly ask each child to recount the situation, and encourage the child who feels wronged to ask for what he needs. If a child can’t break

out of a negative pattern, affirm that he may need a break from play.

Friend or Foe? (ages 6-12) During the school years, friendships grow in depth and complexity. As friendships begin to play a larger role in kids’ lives, parents should watch for signs that a friendship is taking a negative toll. “Children exhibit a range of signs that aid in identifying red flags for negative friendships and bullying,” says Clark-Trippodo. “These signs can include sudden change in behaviors or mood such as isolation, a sudden drop in school performance, defiance and mood swings.” Children in negative friendships might display negative self-talk (“I hate myself” or “I’m ugly”) and shy away from leadership roles or activities they once enjoyed. When a friendship appears to be negative, parents can ask a child to think about how that friend makes him feel, and what appeals to him about that

person. Assure children that they won’t “get in trouble” for reporting bullying or toxic behavior, and role-play appropriate responses to negative behaviors with phrases such as “I don’t like it when you boss me around” or “I don’t want to gossip; let’s play a board game instead.”

Impact Zone (ages 13-18) It’s no secret that a teen’s friends hold major sway—but parents can still help guide good friendship choices, says Clark-Trippodo. “During the early teen years children are influenced powerfully by peer groups,” she says. “One of the most important things a parent can do during the teen years is work to keep the lines of communication open between parent and child.” When a friend appears to have a negative influence on a teen, parents can ask non-judgmental questions to help the teen evaluate the friendship and practice “active listening” without forbidding or preventing a child from engaging with the friend. When a teen needs to step back from negative friendships, introducing him to environments where new friendships can blossom, such as volunteer work, after-school jobs, church or sports teams, helps new relationships take root. When a once-positive friendship takes a negative turn, encourage teens to try to mend fences by writing a sincere email to express their feelings, says nationally recognized parenting expert and author Susan Kuczmarski, Ed.D. “The written word may work better than verbal conversation, especially if the problem is a serious or deep one.
