School is in Session & Day of Play Hooray—the kids are back in school! They may feel like they lost out last year, so it is make-up time for many. It’s a parent’s responsibility to step forward if a child has fallen behind. Talk with your child’s teacher and ask for help, if needed. Family Magazine has an article on page 18 about how to encourage kids with reading and writing. You are a child’s model. Show kids you care by reading to them. Find a Free Little Library in your neighborhood or go to the local library and have the kids pick out books. Ask them for help writing the grocery list or have them write a letter to grandma. She will love it. School mornings get hectic. Get into a routine, utilizing time the night before. Always put school supplies in the same place, so they can be found easily. Read 12 tips to start your new routine on page 14. Getting organized helps your family have more free time to sit back and enjoy life. 12 tips to establish a new routine After an unprecedented year with most kids schooling from home, families largely fall into two categories: those who can’t wait to get back to regular, full-time school and those who would rather stay home. Regardless of which side of the fence you’re on, the transition may be tough on kids. Here are suggestions to help you and your children build habits for a positive new school year. Practice and Motivate Consistently practicing good habits helps kids build willpower to successfully tackle challenges. According to Charles Duhigg, author of The Power of Habit, dozens of studies show that self-discipline has a bigger effect on academic performance than intellectual talent. Duhigg reports the most successful habits include a written plan followed by specific routines.

Set small, manageable goals using a planner and celebrate wins with rewards. “Anything you can do to help your children practice independence, even chores, will help them gain the confidence they need for school,” says Coreen Jacobson, English teacher at Mann Middle School in the College Area.

Daily reading is crucial. “Let children choose to read anything they want,” says Jacobson. “Comic books and graphic novels are especially accessible for a child who hasn’t been reading regularly.”

Make lunches and fill water bottles the night before each school day. Set the table for breakfast after washing dinner dishes. You’re already in the kitchen; getting it all done at once makes sense.

Keep breakfast simple with cereal and a choice of toast, yogurt or fruit. Have kids sit down and eat breakfast upon getting up. This avoids grab-and-go breakfasts that research shows can lead to obesity. It also helps avoid spills on school clothes that could cause a meltdown.

Ways to Encourage Reading and Writing
The pandemic has created a unique
set of educational challenges for children, including struggles with literacy. If you’ve found your child has lost interest in reading and writing over the last year and a half, you’re not alone. “Without the typical structure of a traditional classroom environment, it’s easy for kids to disengage,” explains Noah Wilke, an elementary education specialist with San Diego Unified schools. Strong reading and writing skills are the building blocks for a child’s future success, but encouraging reluctant learners can be a daunting task. Here are some simple steps for keeping literacy at the forefront of your family’s daily life.
Incorporate Literacy “It’s important to immerse young children in a literature-rich environment,” says Lois CoonsPeterson, an education specialist at Barnard Mandarin Magnet School in Pacific Beach. Coons-Peterson recommends labeling one syllable items around the

house (such as “door” and “stove”) from an early age. Young children can also help parents write grocery lists before they head to the store together. “It’s OK for them to use invented/ phonetic spelling,” says CoonsPeterson. “Have them sound out and write ‘sireeal’ for cereal, ‘melk’ for milk—whatever they hear.” Wilke agrees that perfect spelling isn’t necessary when encouraging young writers. “I think to ‘sweat’ spelling too much with kids shouldn’t be a priority, but you can make notes or give quick tips,” Wilke says. “Show them how the word looks, what it sounds like and what the letters do together, but do not focus on it. Focus on exposing kids to language.”
Read Together Your pre-teens may think they’re too old for bedtime stories, but don’t nix the ritual completely. “Even if your child is reading independently, continue to read to and with them, ask questions about what they’re reading and have fun doing it,” says Wilke. “Good literature
will stick with them.” If your kiddo isn’t a fan of the classics, introduce them to comic books, graphic novels or poetry instead. In addition to finding books at your local library, children’s books are a popular item on Facebook “buy nothing” groups. Books can also be found at Little Free Libraries (LFL). Make Learning Fun It’s no secret that children are more likely to engage with a subject they’re interested in. When reading feels like a chore, kids tend to get bored easily and give up. Activities like cooking or baking (have kids read the recipe), participating in a book exchange with friends or following a discovery trail of Little Free Libraries are low pressure, but help spark interest. Incentives may keep kids motivated as well. “It’s all about making learning fun,” says Coons-Peterson. “Challenge

your kids to weekly spelling bees. Memorize the words together and have a family spelling bee on Friday or Saturday. Have Kids Keep a Journal Kids of all ages can express themselves creatively and sharpen skills by writing in a notebook or daily journal. “Writing is a terrific way to organize thoughts and achieve a clarity you might not otherwise achieve in your own head,” Wilke says. “There should be an emphasis on finding enjoyable or helpful applications. I like to write down my ideas, make drawings and organize my thoughts by writing lists,
as well as music and lyrics.” Journaling is also a great method for kids to keep track of trips, special occasions or record interesting sights and sounds in the world around them. “If you take a trip to the beach, [have kids] write about what they saw: waves, birds, sand, whatever it may be. Then have them draw pictures to go with the journal,” says Coons-Peterson. For younger children, buy a premade journal with paper that has larger lines and room for pictures.
Be a Role Model Kids follow their parents’ lead. Watching you read for fun will encourage your kiddo to do the same, says Coons-Peterson. “Dedicate 20-30 minutes daily to reading and model it. Your children should see you reading books or magazines, not just on a computer or smartphone.”
Use Online Resources Websites are a handy supplementary tool for parents wanting to encourage literacy. Coons-Peterson is a fan of
www.Education.com, where families can set up a free account and access printable worksheets, word finds and other activities. Students with disabilities can especially benefit from online tools. “Students who have problems with their hands or limited mobility can use voice to text options on Google Docs to dictate thoughts and write papers and responses,” Coons-Peterson says. Healthy Risk-Taking Helps Kids Thrive It’s a fact of life for every parent. Part of our job is to reduce risk and ensure the safety of the tiny humans placed in our care. After all, risks seem scary, right? Even the dictionary equates risk with peril or injury. But taking a risk simply involves doing something in which the outcome is unknown. Taking risks is a natural and necessary part of growing up, and good news, Parents—there are healthy risks that offer lots of opportunities for growth. Taking risks helps kids step outside their comfort zones, spread their wings and discover what they’re capable of, leading to greater confidence and success later in life. So, how do parents find a balance between natural instincts to keep kids safe and allowing them to take risks that help them grow and thrive? By understanding the role risk-taking plays in a child’s development and learning how to harness the power of healthy decision making. How Taking Risks Benefits Kids From learning to use knives in the kitchen to staying home alone, kids grow into mature adults by taking age-appropriate risks. Kids grow more confident, persistent and resilient as they experience trial and error and cause and effect firsthand. Evaluating challenges and deciding on a course of action helps strengthen decision-making skills. Over time, these opportunities help kids learn to discern between positive rewards and negative consequences — a life skill essential for the teen years and beyond.
How to Encourage Healthy Risk-Taking Check your own response to risk. If your anxiety goes up at the thought of your child reaching the top of a rock-climbing wall or running for class president, take a deep breath and listen to what Point Loma mom Audi Swift discovered. “I’ve had to look at my own anxiety in terms of allowing my kids to take healthy risks. But I’ve learned that kids who are allowed

to struggle a little bit and rely upon their own problem-solving skills are less likely to develop anxiety later in life. It seems counter-intuitive, but embracing healthy risk-taking has lowered my anxiety because I know learning how to handle risk is a protective factor for my kids’ future development.” Model risk-taking and reframe failure. Risktaking is scary because we might fail or get hurt. Parents can help kids confront this fear by modeling a different way to think about risk and failure. It’s a start to developing a growth mindset—the willingness to continue learning, despite setbacks. “Talk with kids about the risks you’ve taken, why you took them, and what happened,” says Julie Lythcott-Haims, author of How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid for Success. “When you talk openly about the setbacks you experienced, you show kids that failure is part of the natural course of life. You normalize struggle, making it safer for them to try, fail and try again.”

Look for opportunities to allow children to experience moments of age-appropriate freedom and independence that can grow over time. Encourage younger children to try new foods, help in the kitchen, or explore freely at the playground. As kids grow, allow them to engage in “risky play” like climbing trees, swinging higher at the park, riding their bike faster, or riding the zipline without help. Encourage older children and teens to engage in activities that create the excitement they crave without the
potential for unhealthy consequences. Trying out for club sports or a high school team, auditioning for a play, and running for student council can stretch teens beyond their comfort zones. Talk about everyday risks. Help kids notice daily decisions that reduce risk, like wearing a seat belt in the car or looking both ways when crossing a street. Slow down and ask “what if ” questions to spark kids’ curiosity and problem-solving skills. Talking about risks when you’re not in the moment helps kids learn to plan and examine different possible outcomes.
Ask questions that demonstrate your belief in their ability to make sound decisions. You might say, “When your friends ask you to do something you’re not comfortable with, how do you handle it?” And when your child takes a risk that ends badly, use it as a teachable moment. Help him reflect by asking, “What would you do differently next time?” Follow some simple guidelines. All families benefit from parents staying fully engaged and ready to help if needed. Don’t hover, but pay attention. Avoid distractions (like your phone), but resist the urge to implore kids to “Be careful!” Instead, give specific instructions such as, “That tree is very tall. To avoid falling, climb slowly and keep checking how you’ll get down.” Stay sensitive to the differences in your children by observing and honoring how each one approaches challenges. One may jump in quickly, while another may exercise caution. Both approaches to managing risk are OK. Children who learn to manage life’s risks grow confident in their abilities to make sound decisions and solve problems.
