Conservation Heroes Wanted $10,000 grant up for grabs for environmental nonprofit
Do you know someone planting a community garden, organizing beach and trail cleanups, or being a community advocate for open spaces? Cox Communications and The Trust for Public Land want to help San Diegans recognize their conservation heroes who are volunteering their time to create, preserve and protect our region’s outdoor spaces and natural habitats for all to enjoy. Nominate your volunteer for the Cox Conserves Heroes Award from April 24 through May 12 at coxconservesheroes.com. Your hero could be named California’s Cox Conserves Hero and receive $10,000 to donate to his or her favorite environmental nonprofit.
Easy Ways Families Can Help Go Green On April 22, the world will celebrate Earth Day, with 196 countries coming together to encourage human behaviors that will protect the Earth for future generations. It is also a day that parents can use to teach their children about environmental stewardship. Regardless of your child’s age or what day it is, there are many simple steps families can take all year long that go a long way in helping Mother Earth, and their own households. Change Your Light Bulbs. Replace regular light bulbs with energy-efficient bulbs. Plant a Tree. Planting a tree is a fun way for kids to help fight climate change. Recycle E-waste. Keep electronics such as computers, TVs, monitors, and cell phones out of landfills by recycling them at e-waste drop-off locations. Or you can donate your old computers, laptops and monitors to Computers2SanDiegoKids, a nonprofit organization that refurbishes them. To donate, visit http://www.c2sdk. org/.
Adjust Your Thermostat by Two Degrees. If you have a home automation system such as Cox Homelife, you can easily adjust your thermostat while away from home using your smartphone. For more information about Cox Homelife, visit www.cox.com or call 888-552-4188. Unplug Energy Vampires. If you’re not using your cell phone charger, gaming system or laptop, don’t forget to unplug it, or the power strip. Cox Homelife includes automation features that enable you to switch your lights on and off using your smartphone while you’re away from home. Drive Less. If you can’t carpool or ride the bus, try cutting back on your drive time by planning your errands so that you’re not driving around as often during the week. Turn Off the Car. While parked next to a curb waiting for the kids, running the car engine produces greenhouse gases and other air pollution. If you have to wait for them, it’s best to park and turn off the engine.
Green Facts:

Families
How will you celebrate Easter this year?
Hop No Farther: Easter Activities, Summer Camps The kids will be out of school soon and you will want to have some structure in their lives. This structure can be fun, educational and also include time for friends. Summer time is fun time, camp time. San Diego Family has many summer camps to consider. Talk with the kids and find their interests. Check out our camp listing starting on page 26 and then review the ads (page numbers noted in the listing). Read about the benefits of attending camp on page 36 and hear what local kids have to say about camp on page 22. Mark your calendar for this year’s Virtual Camp Fair, starting April 15. You can view many camps at your convenience 24/7 on our website. Anne Malinoski, one of our local writers, is back to tell us about becoming less of a clean freak in Let Your Kids Get Dirty. Kids need to play in the dirt and, remember, they are only steps away from the bathtub and washing machine. Let them enjoy the outdoors. Read more on page 20. If you missed part one of Anne’s “clean freak” article (Let Your Kids Get Messy), check our March 2017 issue. Easter is April 16 and our calendar editor, Jenny Burman, knows where the Easter bunny is hiding his eggs this year. Discover these events (and more) in the calendar on page 48. Find directions for a fun Easter craft on page 40 and plastic egg filler ideas on page 38. There are more Easter ideas at www.SanDiegoFamily.com.

Anne Malinoski freelance writer On Easter my husband and I leave the kids with family while we attend Mass at the gorgeous Immaculata on University of San Diego’s campus. Once a year we get to enjoy the liturgy without worrying about their wiggles and noises. Then, my big Italian family gets together to share a meal.
Nicole Maggio marketing representative Every year my family (all 13 of us) goes to my sister’s house in La Quinta. We cook all morning, making deviled eggs, salad, ham, potatoes and lots of yummy desserts. Later we have an Easter egg hunt for the kids and play horseshoes. So fun!
Jenny Burman calendar editor Our family will attend Easter Sunday Mass, then “hop on” back to our house for a special egg hunt (a favorite Easter tradition) for my two kids. No time limits, no competition and they have the goodies all to themselves!

McDonald’s Goes from Bean to “Green” with Recycling Program McDonald’s knows supporting the environment and your community is important to your family. That’s why their “Good Neighbor Good Grounds” recycling program is designed to divert used coffee grounds from the waste stream and promote their use as a boost of nutrients for soil or compost. One of McDonald’s goals is to minimize waste and increase the amount of in-restaurant recycling to 50 percent by 2020. That includes coffee grounds and espresso beans, which contribute to greenhouse gas emissions when they begin decomposing in a landfill. Luckily, coffee grounds make a great soil fertilizer for gardening! Through the recycling program, participating restaurants package coffee grounds and donate them to local schools, libraries, customers and other public resources for gardening at no extra cost. If you’re interested in learning more about the “Good Neighbors Good Grounds” program, visit your local San Diego County McDonald’s restaurant and speak with the store manager or email info@mymccafesd.com. At Montessori Child Development Center (MCDC), experienced teachers inspire a love of learning in a home-like environment with programs for toddlers, preschoolers and kindergarteners. Outdoor-adventure abounds at MCDC where children are surrounded by nearly two acres of park-like land with farm animals, vegetable gardens and grassy play areas with beautiful shade trees. Inside, children are motivated to learn in an environment where they are treated like unique individuals and guided by teachers who understand their needs. “Thanks to extraordinary teachers and supportive staff, we have watched our son grow from a shy toddler to a confident kindergartner,” says Alpha Ray of Rancho Bernardo. MCDC provides daily afterschool programs for children enrolled as full-day students. Programs include music, art, yoga, cooking and more. Montessori Super Summer Camp activities are organized around weekly themes such as Storytelling and Drama, Arts and Crafts, and Science and Swimming. Now enrolling for summer and fall. Fact or Fiction? Teach children how to identify fake news
How do you make a good decision or
form a sound opinion? For most adults, the answer is obvious. Find the best information you can from sources that have proved reliable in the past. For young people, things may not be as clear. By age 18, it’s estimated that 88 percent get much of their news from social media. Unfortunately, many kids aren’t able to evaluate what they find according to a highly publicized study from researchers at Stanford University. “Many assume that because young people are fluent in social media they are equally savvy about what they find there,” says Professor Sam Wineburg, lead author of the report. “Our work shows the opposite.” Middle schoolers didn’t understand the difference between reported news and “sponsored content.” High school students assumed that an unattributed photo proved the truth of a story. And college students couldn’t detect the bias in a tweet. So what should parents do? Start by talking to your children about what deserves to be shared online. Point out that false and biased information comes from many sources—deceptive advertising, satirical websites or organizations with an agenda. Explain “click bait”—tidbits so astonishing,
18 • SanDiegofamily.com • April 2017
outrageous or implausible that people click and share without thinking. These so-called stories are created to generate revenue. The more clicks, the more revenue. Anyone who shares one of these items is essentially letting an unscrupulous person make money off them and their friends. No one, including kids, likes to be duped by bad information. To help your children develop the savvy to evaluate what they find online, talk regularly about how important it is to ask the following questions: Is it worth reading? According to a study at Columbia University, 59 percent of links shared on Twitter have never actually been clicked. Kids show respect for their friends by sharing only things that they were willing to read or watch. Fake news sites in particular count on mindless sharing to make money. Who stands behind it? Encourage kids to track stories back to the website where they originated. What’s the purpose of the website? How is it funded? Are they trying to sell a product or promote an agenda? To answer these questions, kids may need to do a little detective work. Check the “About Us” page and scroll
down the home page to find out who owns the copyright to the material. Look at the URL. Some fake news sites reel in the unsuspecting with addresses that are deceptively close to legitimate sites. Point out extensions: .gov is a government agency, .edu is colleges and universities and .ru is a site that originates in Russia. (A complete extension list is available at www.webopedia.com.) Lists of sites that play fast and loose with the facts are available from www.Snopes.com, a website that has been debunking Internet hoaxes for a long time. Another website (www.RealorSatire .com) allows people to enter a URL to find out if an article comes from a fake or biased website. What’s the source? Help children understand sources by discussing who they trust at school. Some kids are genuine authorities in different areas—they know sports stats or when assignments are due. Others have a reputation for spreading rumors or even telling lies. The same thing is true online. A story is worth sharing only if it comes from reliable sources. The sources should be named and, in most cases, there should be more than one. They should be people who are
qualified to have an opinion because they’ve studied the topic, done research or have relevant experience. Can the story be confirmed? Anyone can say anything online. Teach kids to Google stories and authors to find out whether anyone else finds them credible. A story that appears in one place or is based on a single tweet should be discounted. You can also point older kids to websites that help differentiate good information from bogus claims:
Scan this QR code to learn more about our parties!
HOST YOUR NEXT BIRTHDAY WITH US!
www.HealthNewsReview.org evaluates stories about medical research. www.Politifact.com and www.Factcheck .org try to verify claims by politicians.
Weekend Party Packages Include
10 Skaters/Skate Rental Cake, Ice Cream, Punch Skating Games Refreshment Time Place Setting Party Server
www.Tineye.com helps users track down photographs to see if they’ve been manipulated. What’s the tone? Many online stories are designed to trigger strong feelings such as fear, anger or even hatred. Encourage children to pay attention to words that manipulate or inflame emotions. Point out that people should be especially careful about sharing stories of this kind. The question should always be: Will sharing this make the world a better place? Obviously, much of what’s shared on social media isn’t serious, and kids don’t need to apply this level of scrutiny to animal videos or other playful posts. At the same time, children (and adults) should be aware that they and others are using information they get through social media to make decisions about social, political and health issues. As the Stanford researchers put it, “Never have we had so much information at our fingertips. Whether this bounty will make us smarter and better informed or more ignorant and narrowminded will depend on our awareness of this problem and our educational response to it.” v Carolyn Jabs, M.A., has been writing Growing Up Online for 10 years. Let Your Kids Get Dirty A clean freak’s guide to outdoor play Part two of a two-part series
Missed part one? Read “Let Your Kids Get Messy: A clean freak’s guide to sensory play” at www.SanDiegoFamily.com/ resources/parenting/2024. As a recovering clean freak, I often create excuses to avoid going outside. Kids have a knack for achieving maximum grubbiness outdoors. My 3-year-old likes to smear mud on his face. He also rubs sand on his scalp for fun. My younger son, a baby, refuses to be carried when we’re outside. He prefers to crawl through the dirt, mouthing every rock and woodchip he can find. Nature provides a bounty of choking hazards! Then comes the laundry, the wet shoes, the mopping. Is an hour of fresh air really worth all the trouble? It sure is. According to Children & Nature Network, an organization dedicated to connecting children and communities with the outdoors, playing outdoors can improve or prevent attention difficulties, obesity and mood disorders. It also provides a rich sensory experience that promotes learning and civic-mindedness.

So, how can clean freaks overcome hang-ups about dirt? Local author and educator Cynthia Jenson-Elliot says most people have fun once they jump in and give grime a try. When Jenson-Elliott does gardening workshops with kids and teachers, she tells them they don’t have to touch anything and are welcome to just look, but they can’t resist exploring with their hands. “We get so much of our information about the world with our hands,” Jenson-Elliot says. “Our very brain development is dependent on getting our hands into everything. Even dirt!” To overcome dirt-phobia, allow yourself to take pleasure in sunshine, breezes and plant life. Replace anxious thoughts with genuine wonder at the beauty of nature. Sure, kids get dirty outside, but with practice, they’ll learn to remove muddy clothes and shoes at the door. The more time you spend in nature, the more you’ll crave. And here’s a bonus: Kids who play outside have less time to clutter up the house. Ready to explore? Here are fun places to let the kids get dirty in San Diego.
Nature Exploration Area 2221 Morley Field Dr., Balboa Park This unique outdoor space provides natural materials for open-ended play. You won’t find any swings or slides at this playground. Instead, the area offers an assortment of large logs, branches and tree stumps. Build a fort or create an obstacle course. Consider taking a family hike after playtime; there’s a trailhead nearby. The Nature Exploration Area is just south of the tennis courts and east of the dog park at Morley Field.
Tide Pools Grab your non-skid, water-safe shoes and visit one of San Diego’s many tide pools. Kids will delight in an array of sea creatures like anemones, urchins, crabs and limpets. Take lots of pictures, but remind kids not to touch the delicate organisms. Discover San Diego’s best spots to go tidepooling at www.SanDiegoFamily.com/out-and-about/over400-things-to-do/1727.

Wander through a grass maze, plant succulents, and climb a treehouse. There’s an outdoor music area and a mountain stream with toy boats to race. Admission is $14 for adults and $8 for children.
Alta Vista Botanical Gardens 1270 Vale Terrace Dr., Vista www.altavistabotanicalgardens.org Gorgeous plant life and artwork come together in this collection of diverse gardens. Check out the Earth Day Festival on April 15 from 10 a.m.–3 p.m. Activities include planting, painting, recycled art and games. The event is free and open to the public. Monthly gardening classes for kids are fun, educational opportunities to play in the dirt.
SMARTS Farm 1326 Broadway, Downtown San Diego www.humanesmarts.org Lease a planter box to grow your own urban garden at this downtown oasis. Mark Janz and Marcus Bollinger maintain a children’s garden designed to promote sensory interaction with nature. One plant responds dramatically to touch—its leaves curl rapidly in response to pressure. Another plant smells like buttered popcorn! They also planted salvia to attract hummingbirds and flowers that attract butterflies. Check the website for family-friendly events open to the public. v We’d love to see your photos as you’re out exploring! It’s that time of year—
time to decide which spring and summer camps to enroll the kids in! San Diego camps provide an abundance of awesome summer fun and diverse experiences beyond the classroom for young people all over the county. Before wracking your brain and researching which camps are the most educational or enriching, talk with the kids about what they love and want to do this year. Their opinions matter—and their answers may surprise you. Whether they decide to delve into something new or dig deeper into an activity they already enjoy, make the most of their time off from school with a camp experience. I asked local kids what they like best about summer camp and what reigns supreme is adventure, trying new activities and time outdoors. San Diego kids especially love their water sports! Almost everyone mentioned relishing the freedom of time with friends, new and old. Here are kid confessions—what kids say about their favorite summer camps: “I love zoo art camp because I’m really into art. We made pandas out of clay and they were really cute. I have one in my bedroom. I love art so much that we changed our dining room into an art room.” Cameron, age 9, San Carlos. “At theater camp, you get to do stage combat, make-up, dress people up in toilet paper and at the end of the day, you rehearse your show.” Olivia, age 9, Carmel Mountain Ranch.
“My favorite summer camp ever is Mission Bay Aquatics Camp be cause I got to go in th e water everyday. My fav orite subject was boog ie boarding because I lai d on my belly like an ott er and went really fast!” Sofia, age 9, San Dieg o.
“My favorite summer camp is Rawhide Ranch in Bonsall. I really enjoyed learning so many things about the animals there. As a buckaroo, I was even able to care for the horses.” Kalei, age 13, Oceanside. Photo courtesy of Lisa Gipson

“The best summer camp I have ever attended is Junior Lifeguards in Carlsbad because I participated in water sports such as surfing, snorkeling, bodyboarding, and paddle boarding and I learned a lot about the ocean, rip currents, and marine life. My favorite part is that you get to participate in activities that you wouldn’t get to do during the school year, such as skateboarding or surfing everyday.” Kiennan, age 11, Carlsbad.
“At Boy Scout camp, earning merit badges was my favorite. We got to learn something new like pottery and rifle shooting and got rewarded at the end.” Jakob, age 11, Oceanside. “My favorite summer camp is my church camp. I like the massive zip line, going to the bonfire at the end of each night and staying up ’til like 12.” Tyler, age 10, Santee.
“I like to explore and do activities. I also like eating lunch outside. My favorite summer camp is circus camp, because you get to go on the chiffon (aerial silks) and you get to do tricks and act out a show.” Emma, age 8, San Carlos. v Cherie Gough is a local freelance writer and mom of two adventurous kids.

When Leanne Bains’ daughters went
to Raintree Ranch, YMCA of San Diego County’s overnight horse camp, she expected them to have fun. What she didn’t expect? How transformational the experience would be for 11-year-old Julie and 10-year-old Lily. “When I dropped them off, they were hugging me and it was hard to leave. When I picked them up a week later, they were hugging their friends and the staff while crying,” says Bains, whose daughters have also attended YMCA day camps. Bains has been surprised by the emotional growth of the girls after each camp experience, noting that they have also learned social skills and conflict resolution. “Most importantly,” she says, “they never leave anyone out.”
Skill Building Camp experiences—at both day and overnight camps—can help kids of all ages, backgrounds and talents, build

An Opportunity to Explore and Grow
physical, cognitive and emotional skills. “Skill development is huge,” says Tom Madeyski, Regional Vice President of Camping Programs, YMCA of San Diego County. Kids may learn to ride horses, climb high adventure towers, try backpacking and mountain biking, and cook over an open campfire. “We’re teaching skills they may not get in their everyday lives.” Kids also learn practical outdoor self-care such as reapplying sunscreen throughout the day and drinking lots of water to stay hydrated in hot temperatures, especially when active. “There are so many skills we can teach kids. Probably one of the biggest is being safe, happy and enjoying the outdoors,” says Madeyski.
Get Moving! In a time when kids are spending more time in front of a TV or on a device
than being outdoors, going to camp keeps them moving. “An active body is part of having an active mind,” says Gabby Coburn, Outdoor Program Manager for Girl Scouts San Diego, who oversees day and resident (overnight) camps. She says whole child development is very important—when kids use their whole bodies, they build gross motor skills and develop physical confidence. And don’t worry about being the best at any given activity. “You don’t have to be the expert, you just have to try,” Coburn says.
Cognitive Benefits Going to camp can increase selfesteem. Kids may gain confidence and improve decision-making. “Parents report kids are more independent and more comfortable taking on risks or challenges after camp,” says Coburn. While activities
are educational and fun, they’re also aimed to help kids with selfdevelopment. “It’s not just how to pull an archery bow, it’s how to set goals, move past disappointments and pick yourself up when you mess up,” says Coburn, who encourages girls to step outside their comfort zone and try something new. There are 100 Girl Scout camps ranging from theater and water sports to comic making and horseback riding. “Camp is a great time to try on new roles,” says Coburn. It’s not uncommon for the girl who’s quiet at home to be a class clown at camp. “It’s the opportunity for a fresh start—great to be with a bunch of other girls in a safe, supportive environment,” she says, noting that camp removes stereotypical labels.
Emotional Acceptance At camp, kids are away from the daily routine of school and family. They have a chance to try new things, engage in teambuilding activities and meet new people. Often kids look up to their camp counselors. “Kids find the best side of themselves at camp,” says Madeyski. They learn social skills and how to interact with others. Camp can help kids make and sustain friendships. Julie and Lily love camp for different reasons, but Bains says they’ve benefited most from relationship building. “The girls have made so many friends at summer camp,” says Bains, “who they continue to have relationships with outside of camp. They also have special bonds with the staff.” The sisters get along better as a result of camp, too. “When they got home they were helping each other put things away and they were taking turns,” says Bains. “I was floored. These two usually bicker constantly. They talked for weeks about how much fun they had and the things they learned.” v Kristen Castillo is a freelance writer and three-time Emmy recipient.

Art with Alyssa
Alyssa Navapanich
Earth Monoprints Celebrate Earth Day by doing an art project at home and participating in local Earth Day events. Find events at www.SanDiegoFamily.com/ things-to-do/seasonal-happenings/1571.
Discussion Points for Parents/Teachers • How to take care of the planet—Reduce, Reuse, Recycle • The origins of Earth Day • Color blending and mixing • The colors of the earth when viewed from outer space
Supplies Any bowl with a flat bottom (the larger the bowl, the larger the print will be) White construction paper (12” x 12” or larger) Blue, white, brown and green tempera paint Marker or crayon Hole punch Ribbon Scissors
Directions • Turn the bowl upside down and put 3-4 drops of each color of paint (blue, white, brown and green) on the bottom. • Place the bowl paint side down onto the paper. • Press gently and give it a little twist (about 2/3 turn) so the paint blends a bit. • Lift the bowl off the paper—you just created a monoprint! Optional: Make 2-3 additional prints (on other pieces of paper) without adding more paint. In printmaking, these are called ghost prints. • Allow image(s) to dry. • Keeping the earth print in the center of the paper, cut a 3” border around it. Tip: For a perfectly round earth, cut the print in a circle and mount it on a new piece of paper. • Write the ways you care for the earth (or what you love about it) in the border. • Punch a hole in the top and attach ribbon for hanging. Alyssa Navapanich is an art enthusiast who teaches art to elementary school kids in North County.
