Asking Saves Kids by Jaime Friedman, MD FAAP
As a pediatrician, the safety and well-being of all children is my primary concern. When I counsel families on sleep safety, car safety, sunscreen, baby proofing, choking risks and even preventative care like healthy eating and vaccines, it is because my ultimate goal is for all children to grow up healthy. Firearm safety is no different. While it is legal to own a gun in the United States, it is not always safe to do so when children are around. Children are naturally curious and no matter how many times you tell them not to touch something, research shows that their curiosity will get the better of them. Even if you think your gun is safely stored or hidden out of your child’s reach, studies suggest differently. “39% of parents erroneously believe their children do not know where their gun is stored, and 22% wrongly believe their child never handled their gun.” *
What are the risks? Gun violence, intentional and accidental, in this country is a very real concern. “Firearmrelated deaths are the third
leading cause of death overall among U.S. children ages 1-17 years, and the second leading cause of injury-related death (behind only car crashes).” ** Almost 1300 children die by guns yearly and 5,790 are treated for gun-related injuries. That’s scary! While half of those injuries were intentional (homicide), in younger children, firearm injury is more likely to be accidental. In the adolescent population, suicide by firearm is the 3rd leading cause of death and suicides comprise 38% of yearly deaths by firearms. Access to firearms greatly increases the risk of injury to children of all ages, and guns in the home are 43% more likely to be used to kill someone known to the shooter. Furthermore, having a gun in the home increases the risk of suicide 5-fold.
What can you do to keep your family safe? Between the normal curiosity of young children, the risk of accidental shootings, the risk to family members in domestic violence situations, and the impulsive nature of adolescents who may be depressed or suicidal, it is extremely risky to have a gun in the home. However if you choose

Keep unloaded guns locked and stored in a locked cabinet
Store ammunition in a separate locked cabinet
Always monitor young children who may be playing in the area where the gun is stored
ASK other parents where your
children go to play if they have a gun in the home.
The ASK campaign is intended to keep all children safe. Just like you would ask fellow parents about other safety concerns while your child is in their care, ask about unlocked guns in the home. Started by the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence and sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the ASK campaign wants you to pledge to ask about unlocked guns before your child goes somewhere to play.

Na Koa Kai Canoe Club Experience the Spirit of Aloha in San Diego
In 2011, when “Uncle Gus” Cervantes
and “Auntie Casey” Czechowski started the Nā Koa Kai Canoe Club, a Hawaiian outrigger canoeing program for kids, they didn’t even have a canoe. Cervantes and Czechowski weren’t concerned. They had been teaching canoeing and Hawaiian culture to kids (with another group) for a few years. They knew they’d eventually get a canoe—and they did, within the first year of running their own program. Nowadays, Nā Koa Kai (“sea warriors”) has four six-man canoes and one two-man canoe. Over 30 kids ages 8–18 are in the co-ed club, attending weekly classes and canoeing on Mission Bay. Read about Na¯ Koa Makapo¯ (“visually impaired warriors”), Na¯ Koa Kai’s program for kids with visual impairment at www.SNRFSD.org. “The most rewarding thing is watching kids blossom,” says Cervantes, explaining students often come in to the classes shy, but develop confidence and become leaders. Amy Lewis’ son, 15-year-old Gavin, was a part of Nā Koa Kai last year and plans to return this season. The family previously lived on the Big Island of Hawaii where they all paddled on a team. When they moved to San Diego, Lewis looked for a club with that same aloha spirit. “We love learning about Hawaiian culture; Nā Koa Kai focuses on paddling as an important part of that culture,” she says, noting the club and its members are inclusive of all backgrounds and abilities. “Everyone in the club is treated like ohana,” she says, using the Hawaiian word for family. “The club focuses on respecting one another, respecting the ocean, living a healthy lifestyle and the importance of working together and lifting one another up.”

In Hawaiian culture, elders are treated like family members, even when they’re not related. That’s why elders are called aunts and uncles. While many students in the program have Hawaiian heritage, others have no connection. They simply want to learn the culture. The highlight of the program is a 10-day cultural trip to Maui that students and teachers take every two years. The outrigger team has competed in Hawaii too, crossing the channel from Maui to Lanai. “They get full immersion,” says Cervantes. The kids learn history, prayers, chants and the Hawaiian language during the program. While in Maui, they see things tourists typically don’t, such as a 400-year-old fish pond. There are fees to participate, but most of the money supporting the program comes from fundraisers, such as the annual ShakaFest (Saturday, April 28) and the Duke Longboard Luau (September). Cervantes wants kids from all over San Diego, including those from underserved communities, to be able to attend the program. “We’ve had kids that are of Pacific Islander descent and have never seen the water before,” he says. “That blows my mind. That’s not going to happen on my watch.” Nā Koa Kai’s season runs March through October. There’s no prerequisite for joining, except that students should know how to swim. surroundings and ideal climate, it’s no surprise that local summer camps often include aquatics-based recreation. If getting wet is your child’s favorite part of summer, you might want to sign him up for a specialized camp experience at one of San Diego’s beach, pool or lagoon environments. Aquatics camps are a perfect way for children to improve swimming skills, learn ocean and beach safety, develop boating experience, and participate in a range of water sports and activities. These camps offer lots of fun, improve overall fitness and provide great opportunities to make new friends.
In the Pool Whether your little fish dreams of diving off the blocks at the Olympics, wants to improve competitive strokes for swim team or simply loves to spend time at the pool, swimming camps are an excellent summertime option. “Swim camps offer a unique opportunity that allows young studentathletes to interact with and learn from some of the best coaches and swimmers in the sport,” says Daniel Perdew, camp director of UC San Diego Swimming Camps. “They give young aspiring swimmers a firsthand look at what they could reap from their hard work and serve as a motivating tool upon return to their daily routine.”

Many local community pools offer day camps; San Diego’s university pools also have overnight options. Swimmers might also enjoy camp at one of the region’s water parks. While they don’t all offer directly-run, daily summer programs, quite a few affiliated camps include water park field trips so kids can enjoy exhilarating waterslides, floating in lazy rivers and wave surfing machines.
At the Beach Can your child identify a riptide? Does he know what to do if stung by a jellyfish? Fortunately for local families, a variety of low-cost Junior Lifeguards (JG) programs are offered each summer through San Diego’s city and state beaches, and can provide the answers. Junior Lifeguards receive essential ocean safety education from seasoned professional lifeguards—all in a fun, recreational environment. “JGs spend many hours learning about ocean awareness, marine life, basic first aid, CPR, sun protection, how to detect skin cancer, lifeguard skills, body surfing, body boarding, surfing, and teamwork through a variety of fun beach games and competition,” says Patty Mackle, Junior Lifeguard coordinator for Torrey Pines State Beach. If your child’s main goal is to learn to surf, try a specialized surf camp. There are plenty of day camps to choose from,
offered for all ages and abilities, up and down our coastline. These teach surfing basics such as paddling, catching waves, standing up and surfing etiquette; more advanced surfers can work to improve technique. Experienced coaches keep kids safe, while also providing instruction on ocean safety. Local sleepaway surf camps, such as
KIDS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Did you know that there’s an amazing local surf camp for kids with special needs? The nonprofit organization Surfing Madonna offers sessions at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, free to participants, twice a month from May to September. An adaptive swim camp is available at Mission Bay Aquatic Center, and the Autism Society San Diego holds a specialized surf camp at La Jolla Shores. If your child loves boats, consider a camp that teaches kayaking, canoeing or sailing. Or, high-speed summer thrills can be found with wakeboarding, tubing or waterskiing focused camps. Other aquatics programs introduce STEM education elements and might involve coastal explorations via kayak or stand-up paddleboard. Older kids and teens can even learn to snorkel or scuba dive to experience the underwater world. “A marine science camp such as ours gives students the opportunity to develop their love for the ocean or explore the possibility of pursuing marine biology as a field of study in the future,” says Amy Bergen Zerofskim, SEACAMP San Diego director. If your child can’t decide, there’s really no need! General watersports camps are also available. A single week might involve surfing, sailing, paddle sports, waterskiing and more. Multisport camps are either based at a single location, or involve daily adventure trips to a number of places for greater variety. Also, while many aquatics summer camps emphasize a single theme, they often include aspects of others. What I Learned as a Camp Counselor And why teens should give it a shot When I was a teenager, I made the
transition from enthusiastic theater camper to full-fledged counselor. It was the ideal summer job—and it came after a brief, character-building stint in retail, so I knew how lucky I was to have it. Memories of my childhood summers at camp were still fresh, evoking a genuine eagerness to create that magic for the next generation. Looking back, I know that my energy and sincerity were a gift to the little campers in my care. The lessons I learned from them were essential to my own development as I made those first, cautious steps into young adulthood. Are the teens in your life unsure about what to do this summer? My entirely biased opinion is that you should consider nudging them in the direction of becoming a camp counselor. I’ll explain by sharing the most important lessons I learned during my summers as a counselor.
How to Lead Leadership has never come naturally for me. Despite my obsession with showbiz, I was secretly an anxious,

introverted kid who felt overwhelmed at the thought of leading my peers. But as a camp counselor, I was able to practice my skills on younger children. It wasn’t as intimidating, because they already looked up to me. Time with the campers helped me discover what I was missing: Leaders must project confidence and capability. I also learned how important it is to convey respect to the people I’m leading. No one—not even a 5-year-old—will comply when they feel disrespected. Most importantly, I learned that a leader must set an impeccable example. The children were like a mirror. My energy became their energy. Those lessons were so important to grasp as I moved into young adulthood.
The Gift of Sharing My Interests with Others Musical theater was the great passion of my youth. By the
time I donned my counselor badge, I’d already attended eight theater camps, performed in dozens of shows and taken years of lessons. I had mountains of knowledge to share about my favorite pastime. When taking on the role of counselor, teens have the opportunity to share talents with enthusiastic little learners. They can present their favorite material in the most entertaining way—and that is deeply rewarding!
How to Apologize My first summer as a counselor was my first real experience with kids. I didn’t know how to teach children, and I didn’t know the first thing about discipline. I sure learned quickly! There were times when I was too stern with my campers or taught a routine too quickly. I knew immediately from the looks on their little faces that I had dropped the ball. When charged with caring for kids, it’s important to admit mistakes immediately and apologize sincerely. That was such an important lesson in humility for me. On the bright side, kids can be
What does it take to be a great camp counselor? An interest in the camp’s theme: Counselors need to be knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the skills they teach. Prospective counselors should choose a camp they would have loved as a child!
Respect for children: To be successful working with kids, one must view children as whole people deserving of respect. Teens lacking that sort of maturity aren’t ready to lead and mentor kids.
Willingness to learn: Young counselors are going to encounter some challenging moments. They must be open to constructive criticism and willing to ask camp leaders for advice.
Desire to cultivate fun: Camp is about having fun and creating awesome memories. Counselors must be prepared to expend heaps of energy to that end.

How to Improvise Camp isn’t as rigorously structured as school, and schedules tend to get mixed up or changed at the last minute. It’s not enough for counselors to be flexible. They also have to be self-starters, who can figure out what to do with a group of campers when an activity gets cancelled or delayed. Camp kept me on my toes,

Think Blue Brigade
Raising the next generation of environmental leaders “Save the ocean, save the planet” is the motto of Mission Bay High School’s Environmental Science Club advisor and teacher, Steve Walters. His students (and many others) are learning about the importance of clean water and sharing the message with their peers through a partnership with I Love a Clean San Diego’s Think Blue Brigade.
Think Blue Brigade works with San Diego City high schools that have an established, active environmental club. The group’s mission is to spark learning and understanding of complex ideas by offering “Speak with a Specialist” presentations to schools, leading field trips, and providing opportunities for students to do community service and convene at community events. Through Think Blue Brigade (TBB), the next generation of passionate environmental leaders connects with like-minded individuals. Currently, the program supports five local high schools and hopes to expand in coming years. Its influence is already far reaching. Morse High School’s Environmental Club President, James Anacleto, sees a positive impact at his school. In partnership with TBB, club members hosted a school-wide campus clean up. “It reminded us how much work is left for us to do if we want a healthier and more beautiful community,” says Anacleto. By starting close to home, students see the potential for creating positive change in their community. Morse’s Environmental Club looks forward to participating in I Love a Clean San Diego’s annual Creek to Bay Cleanup on April 21.

At Mission Bay High, guest speakers get students excited about what scientists are doing in the outside world and inspire activism through community engagement projects. Mission Bay Environmental Club students are spearheading a project to eliminate plastics from school cafeterias district-wide. They convinced the district to replace plastic bowls with paper trays and are working on eliminating additional plastic items. The club members are also taking activism to the streets, asking businesses along Garnet Avenue to eliminate or reduce the use of plastic straws. They partnered with the school’s graphic arts students to create a poster that businesses can display to inform patrons of the ecofriendly practice. Beach cleanups are a popular way for Patrick Henry High students to come together. Olivia McDonald, Environmental Club member and president of the Surfrider Club on campus says that projects such as these inspire students to take on increased leadership roles. Through TBB, Patrick Henry students can tour the City of San

Diego’s Pure Water Facility, volunteer to stencil local storm drains, and bring environmental awareness to their peers via social media campaigns. The Creek to Bay Cleanup impacts perceptions of their natural environment. “Think Blue Brigade is giving us more exposure to the environment around us,” says Environmental Club President, Sophia Pruden. “I had no idea there were crayfish in the creek near my house. It was such an eye-opener.” Patrick Henry also set a goal to have a zero waste campus. Toward this effort, the Environmental Club opened a thrift store on campus. Individuals throughout the school community donate used clothing and other items that are sold for a dollar. The club benefits, as does the campus at large. Some of the profits are used to help seniors in need pay for prom tickets and yearbooks. This spring, TBB will send zero waste specialists to speak to the environmental clubs at all participating schools. TBB recognizes the hard work of students with an end-of-year celebration honoring those who have participated in regional events, volunteered in community service and completed special projects.
