Lose the Weight - Look & Feel GREAT! Without Shots/Drugs, Surgery or Exercise

Christine was skeptical but lost 33 lbs and 2 sizes in 60 days.

Lew was skeptical but it worked “amazingly well” and lost 22 lbs.

Sandy lost 20 lbs in 2 months and even her skin and hair is better!

“I knew I wanted to make changes after I had my 2 year old and get rid of my baby fat. Dr. Wong guided me along the way and was very supportive and I’ve lost 23 pounds in 2 months. I’ve met my goals and I’m happy! I feel a lot better, healthier and I have more energy. I’ve noticed that I’ve had to get new clothes!” Mandy C. — San Diego

“After being on Dr. Wong’s program for 2 months, I’ve lost almost 40 pounds. I was lethargic and couldn’t keep up with my kids but I’ve found an answer to my energy problems and I wake up with energy, I feel better, I’ve been eating healthier and I’ve been more active. Thank you Dr. Wong!” Rachel R. — San Diego

“Before I came to see Dr. Wong, I had a lot of health concerns. I had extreme knee pain, I was over-weight and I also had a lack of energy. After I had a consultation with Dr. Wong, he told me what was wrong. Everything we did involved no pain and in 8 weeks, I have lost 32 pounds without doing exercise! I am a lot more energetic and I feel like working out. I am stronger, more alert, more flexible and limber so I appreciate everything about Dr. Wong. If you’re ever in need of optimal health, come see Dr. Wong because he’ll make you strong!” Rodney W. — San Diego

Publisher’s Letter

Our San Diego Happy Mother’s Day!

Mother’s Day is May 13. Family Magazine has moms covered this month because they are the most important part of the family. If Mom isn’t feeling well, there is turmoil in the household. So Mom, take care of yourself! How about an evening out with girlfriends, making chocolate bars? Sounds delicious. See page 26 for details and more ideas. Don’t forget to enroll your kids for summer camp. Classes are filling up, so do it today. Find our camp advertisers in this issue for summer fun; also check out our Virtual Camp Fair at www.SanDiegoFamily.com. I want to remind you that the San Diego Kids Expo is April 28 and 29 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Family Magazine will have a booth there, as well as at the annual Fiesta de los Peñasquitos on May 6. Stop by either event to say hello and sign up for our eNewsletters if you haven’t already. See you out and about! May 15 is National Chocolate Chip Day. We enjoy baking chocolate chip cookies here in the office. Everyone loves the wonderful aroma and, of course, eating them. Maybe we should declare every day Chocolate Chip Day. We want to say so long to Ramona Warner. She is retiring from Family Magazine after selling advertising for 19 years. She plans to travel to Texas to visit her daughter in college and enjoy time with her son—a great kid in high school. Ramona is a great cook—we are hoping she still joins us for some office lunches. Thank you, Ramona.

For over 30 years, Ganon Gil Early Childhood Center has provided a fun and interactive education for children ages 2 through pre-kindergarten. This spring, the Early Childhood Center at Temple Adat Shalom is expanding its program to include children as young as 6 weeks old with the addition of The Nest Infant Toddler Center. With a low student-to-teacher ratio, parents can rest assured that their children will receive individualized attention and instruction. All teachers are experienced in the field of early childhood education and are chosen for their passion and excellence. Students are free to learn and grow both inside and outside of the classroom. The Ganon Gil Garden provides an outdoor enrichment experience that incorporates science and hands-on learning. Children enjoy watering, weeding, planting and picking fresh produce. Ganon Gil incorporates a Judaic perspective to early childhood curriculum including holidays, customs, ceremonies and Hebrew language learning. NonJewish students are encouraged to apply and are welcome regardless of background, religion or affiliation. Busting Myths

4 about

Mothering There are few things in the world as

tender as a mother’s heart. It’s out of the deep desire to be a great mom that myths about mothering can spring up and flourish. Myths that some of us believe before we ever become moms; others that develop over time spent with our little ones, and some that we learn by watching how other mothers do things. Imagine the number of mothering myths I’ve heard over 30 years on the job. Myths that set mothers up to believe motherhood should look a certain way. Here are my top four, chosen because they still draw me in— even after a lifetime of mothering.

MYTH 1 I’ve got this! This myth is cloaked in optimism, confidence and a teensy bit of pride. It’s the myth that tells us we should be able to do it all when our kids are young and know it all when they come to us for answers as they grow. It’s based on the belief that there is no love like a mother’s love and no one knows our kids better than we do. Thinking this way leads to two places: guilt and

18 • SanDiegofamily.com • May 2018

exhaustion. Being super mom is not sustainable. Bust this myth by asking for help with the “heavy lifting” of parenting young children and the wisdom needed as they grow into young adults. Find an encouraging community of likeminded parents where comparisons are left at the door and collaboration, encouragement and support are the only things on the agenda.

MYTH 2 I can’t do this! A particular kind of incredulous fear gripped me the moment we pulled away from the hospital with our first-born strapped into the car seat. How in the world did the doctors and nurses decide that we could be trusted with this responsibility? Since that day I’ve experienced more than one mothering moment when I looked around for a qualified adult to take charge—only to realize that adult was me. Motherhood is overwhelming at times. It leaves us feeling frazzled and wondering if something is wrong with us. It’s not uncommon to believe that no one else in the history of mothering

has ever had to face the challenges of operating on no sleep, shopping with a toddler or disciplining an angry teen. None of us are fully qualified when we step into the role of caring for another human being. It’s a lifetime of on-thejob training.

MYTH 3 My mistakes will ruin my kids. Someone once said that you always ruin your first pancake—and that kids are like pancakes. I’ve apologized often to my oldest son who was the lucky recipient of some of my crazier mom moments: Like believing he was a genius because he could identify the letters in the Winn-Dixie sign when he was 2 years old and then having him evaluated by a child psychologist to verify my claim. Turns out that yes, he’s a pretty smart guy, but his success is likely in spite of my inflated notions not because of them. Here’s the thing: We all make crazy mistakes with our kids. We feel at times like we’re losing our minds. At times we act like it, too, but there

is a way to keep our crazy moments from ruining our kids: Confess to being human and acknowledge that sometimes you screw up. Apologize when it happens, and demonstrate grace and humility. Life skills are best learned when seen in action.

A child’s performance is a mother’s report card. What mother’s heart doesn’t swell when her amazing offspring does something adorable, unexpected or dazzling? Or cringe at the thought of being asked, “Why don’t you control your kid, lady?” Of course, mothers take this feedback personally. To us it seems there is a direct correlation between our mothering skills and how well our children are navigating life. The problem with measuring how well (or not) we are parenting by how well (or not) children are doing is the underlying belief that we are in complete control. We are not. Yes, mothers have the privilege and responsibility to guide, discipline and encourage children, but ultimately they are separate and distinct from us. We are free to celebrate their successes and guide them through failures without keeping a report card on mothering. Mothering myths can reel in moms at every stage. They make false promises of what motherhood should look like, which is a set-up for exhaustion, fear and disappointment. No more! Let’s band together this Mother’s Day and bust as many myths about mothering as we can. Talk to the moms in your life—share with each other what you’ve learned about motherhood. What myths have you believed and how might you break free from them to embrace the wild and wonderful journey of being a mom? Happy Mother’s Day! v Jody Lee Cates is a local mom, blogger and myth buster who lives in North County San Diego.

Parenting with Purpose

Jody Lee Cates

Healthy

Self-Care Fuels

Better Parenting Some of the best parenting advice

around comes from the instructions given by flight attendants just before take off: “If traveling with young children, please put on your own oxygen mask before assisting your child.” Why? Because no one can help anyone if they pass out from lack of oxygen. The same is true of parenting. If you run out of steam, you will run out of everything needed to parent well—energy, patience, creativity, perseverance, will-power—it’s a long list. Enter healthy self-care. Self-care is critical, but what to do about the pangs of guilt that can come with taking time away from parenting duties? And how to find the time in an already crowded schedule of raising kids? Let’s address guilt first: self-care is the opposite of selfishness. Without it, parents grow weary as the energy required to care for little ones is depleted. Taking time to refresh and reconnect to who you are in addition to “Mommy” or “Daddy” renews the strength and enthusiasm necessary for parenting well. Healthy self-care increases patience and decreases stress. This is especially true for parents of a child with special needs, single parents, or in families where a parent works especially long hours or is deployed. So how to find the time? The best way to make self-care part of parenting life is to incorporate it

into a regular routine. Then you’ll be more likely to keep it up, thinking of it as a necessary part of your day, not just a once-in-awhile treat (although once-in-awhile treats are nice, too). Here are ways to weave healthy selfcare into daily life. Wake up before the family. Set the alarm for one hour before the kids wake up. Use the time to do whatever inspires and motivates you—read, workout, write in a journal or take a relaxing bath. Starting the day with a little breathing room will help you feel more relaxed and energized for the day ahead. Enlist a helper during peak hours. Trying to wrestle kiddos through homework, dinner, baths, and bedtime can feel like a lot. Particularly for single parents and parents of children with special needs. A helper can be paid or unpaid, a friend or relative, even a neighborhood teenager. The extra hands can lighten the load and extend your energy. Plan meals. Planning ahead takes extra work at first, but once you’ve got a plan, it can save your sanity— especially at dinnertime. Start by prepping just a few meals in advance each week. Team up with family and friends for ideas. Remember to include healthy snacks not only for kids, but also for you to keep energy up and moods stable (leftover sandwich crusts don’t count). continued on p. 24

Keep a calendar. A family calendar is a sanity-saving tool that will feel like extra work at first, but can help prevent overbooking your life. Get help with housekeeping. Parenting and housekeeping are both timeconsuming jobs. If you’re feeling the pressure of trying to keep up, consider hiring someone to help. Professional housekeeping services are available weekly, monthly or as needed. Shop around for the service that fits your family’s needs and budget. Or get creative and offer to swap housekeeping time with family or friends—once a month one of you takes the kids while the other one cleans in peace. Allow the kids to play independently. Some parents struggle with using time for self-care because they believe children should be engaged in meaningful, structured activities at all times. Free play is a vital part of child development. It’s where kids practice creativity, exercise independence and grow social skills. Give yourself permission to let go of feeling like every moment must be structured; give your kids the gift of learning to play independently and navigate down time. Once you’ve freed up time for yourself, do things that refresh and restore your energy. Read a book on a topic that interests you or makes you smile. Take an exercise class or join an adult sports league—kids aren’t the only ones who can have fun on a playing field. Schedule a weekend away or a night out with friends (see Mom’s Night Out article on page 26 for ideas). Whatever you choose to do, remember that healthy self-care fuels better parenting. It helps us be the kind of parents we spend so much energy trying to become—well rested with more patience and stamina, less stress and more energy. Healthy self-care for parents means happy and healthy families. v Local blogger, Jody Lee Cates, writes about healthy relationships at www.jodyleecates.com

Happy Campers Tips to help kids with their first camp experience School’s almost out. You found the perfect day camp for your little artist, swimmer

or scientist, but you’re worried because camp is unfamiliar territory. Help prepare your child for what’s ahead with these tips to make his first camp experience a positive one.

One, Two Buckle My Shoe: The Basics

C is for Cookie: Make Lunch Stress-free

• Children should memorize full name, address and a parent’s cell phone number before camp begins.

• Packaging often poses a problem for little fingers. Practice opening wrappers and containers at home. Don’t assume camp staff will have time to assist everyone at lunchtime.

• Many day camps require closed-toe shoes and many activities need kids to get shoes on and off quickly. Practice tying shoelaces; if your little one hasn’t mastered this skill before camp starts, consider a pair of Velcro shoes. Even then, do trial runs until he masters getting shoes on and off in a timely manner. Practice makes perfect! • Children should be able to zip their own jackets and pants (or wear ones that pull on). Teach them to tie a jacket around their waist, if necessary. • For half-day camp, apply sunscreen before leaving; children who attend full-day camp should know how and when to reapply.

• One in 13 children has a food allergy; it’s likely that someone at camp will, too. Swapping snacks sounds like fun, but it’s not safe for many kids. Cross-contamination can pose a big problem for kids allergic to nuts or gluten. Teach children not to share food and to respect other people’s space by not touching their lunchbox and food. • Stop yourself the next time you start to clean up after your kids. Teach children how to sort trash from recyclables, throw items in proper bins, and most importantly, not to expect adults to clean up after them. Part of being a successful, happy camper is to help out and do his part. continued on p. 30

For many first-time campers, enrolling with a buddy helps ease jitters. But it’s important to gain the confidence and skills to make new friends. Review and role-play skills that show openness to making friends: • Practice how to greet someone new. Make eye contact and smile. • When someone says “hi”, teach your child to reply, even if he feels shy. Not responding may be misconstrued that he doesn’t want to be friends. • Remind children to take turns. • Discuss the idea that not everyone has to be friends—especially if your child is a people pleaser.

Almost There: Be Assertive • Children should know how (and be willing) to ask for help when needed. If he has a special need, let camp staff know ahead of time. Kids and staff can even agree on a signal to get a staff member’s attention. • Have kids practice asking for what they want (politely). Manners go a long way. You’ve taught your child “please” and “thank you” since he was knee high—be sure he says these allimportant phrases without your cue.

• Practice simple, direct responses to communicate dissatisfaction when necessary, such as “I don’t like that. Don’t do it again.” If an annoying behavior continues from another child, ask a camp counselor for help. Camp is a place to try new things. Let your child know he’s expected to participate in all activities, and that it’s OK if he doesn’t do everything just right. A child who pouts until he gets his way or is unwilling to try new things may not be ready for camp. Researching Age-Appropriate Books – The internet makes it easy for parents to research different book titles and authors, and find out the ratings and recommendations from family-friendly sites. Common Sense Media has a wealth of information on its website https://www. commonsensemedia.org/. It even has a list of “50 Books All Kids Should Read Before They’re 12” that includes classics such as “Charlotte’s Web” and recent best-seller “I Am Malala.” Include your child in the research to reinforce what you think is appropriate, and to narrow down your list to books that match your child’s interests.

Book Shopping on the Web – A book store is a reader’s paradise, a

place where you can stay for hours and never want to leave. Sometimes parents are strapped for time, and every minute counts. During those timestrapped days, the internet is the perfect way to go book shopping and add to your child’s library.

5 Ways Technology Helps Grow Life-Long Readers

E-Readers – Many readers prefer to hold a book in their hand, but for those

One of the greatest gifts children can receive from their mothers is a love of reading, which takes them to new worlds, increases their vocabulary and communication skills, and helps them be more successful in school.

Watch Movies Based on a Book – So many classics and best-selling

children and teens who love technology, an e-reader is a good option for them to access titles and grow their love of reading.

What better time than on Mother’s Day to share the joys of reading with your child. Here are some fun ways you can use technology to help grow life-long readers.

books have been turned into movies, and many of them are available on demand or by accessing your Netflix app through Cox’s Contour TV service. From “Bridge to Terabithia” and “How to Train Your Dragon” to a series like “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” or “The Hunger Games,” check your TV service’s on demand library to see what’s on. It’s fun to compare the book version to the movie, and discuss the similarities and differences. And don’t forget about seasonal movies such as “The Polar Express.”

Online Vocabulary Games – Reading is so much more enjoyable for kids when they understand what they’re reading. There are some great, free games on the internet that help kids of all ages (even teens) increase their vocabulary, including http://pbskids.org/games/vocabulary/ and http:// www.vocabulary.co.il/.

TV services such as Contour from Cox Communications offer an on demand library of thousands of titles, many in the “free on demand” library. And, if you have Contour’s voice controlled remote, you can simply let your child speak the title or a famous movie line into the remote to see if the movie is available.

Whether you’re reading to your child, or having your child read to you, books can help mothers and children bond and even learn more about each other’s interests and outlook on life.
