Mother’s Day is May 13. Family Magazine has moms covered this month because they are the most important part of the family. If Mom isn’t feeling well, there is turmoil in the household. Mothering There are few things in the world as

tender as a mother’s heart. It’s out of the deep desire to be a great mom that myths about mothering can spring up and flourish. Myths that some of us believe before we ever become moms; others that develop over time spent with our little ones, and some that we learn by watching how other mothers do things. Imagine the number of mothering myths I’ve heard over 30 years on the job. Myths that set mothers up to believe motherhood should look a certain way. Here are my top four, chosen because they still draw me in— even after a lifetime of mothering.

MYTH 1 I’ve got this! This myth is cloaked in optimism, confidence and a teensy bit of pride. It’s the myth that tells us we should be able to do it all when our kids are young and know it all when they come to us for answers as they grow. It’s based on the belief that there is no love like a mother’s love and no one knows our kids better than we do. Thinking this way leads to two places: guilt and

exhaustion. Being super mom is not sustainable. Bust this myth by asking for help with the “heavy lifting” of parenting young children and the wisdom needed as they grow into young adults. Find an encouraging community of likeminded parents where comparisons are left at the door and collaboration, encouragement and support are the only things on the agenda.

MYTH 2 I can’t do this! A particular kind of incredulous fear gripped me the moment we pulled away from the hospital with our first-born strapped into the car seat. How in the world did the doctors and nurses decide that we could be trusted with this responsibility? Since that day I’ve experienced more than one mothering moment when I looked around for a qualified adult to take charge—only to realize that adult was me. Motherhood is overwhelming at times. It leaves us feeling frazzled and wondering if something is wrong with us. It’s not uncommon to believe that no one else in the history of mothering

has ever had to face the challenges of operating on no sleep, shopping with a toddler or disciplining an angry teen. None of us are fully qualified when we step into the role of caring for another human being. It’s a lifetime of on-thejob training.

MYTH 3 My mistakes will ruin my kids. Someone once said that you always ruin your first pancake—and that kids are like pancakes. I’ve apologized often to my oldest son who was the lucky recipient of some of my crazier mom moments: Like believing he was a genius because he could identify the letters in the Winn-Dixie sign when he was 2 years old and then having him evaluated by a child psychologist to verify my claim. Turns out that yes, he’s a pretty smart guy, but his success is likely in spite of my inflated notions not because of them. Here’s the thing: We all make crazy mistakes with our kids. We feel at times like we’re losing our minds. At times we act like it, too, but there

is a way to keep our crazy moments from ruining our kids: Confess to being human and acknowledge that sometimes you screw up. Apologize when it happens, and demonstrate grace and humility. Life skills are best learned when seen in action.

A child’s performance is a mother’s report card. What mother’s heart doesn’t swell when her amazing offspring does something adorable, unexpected or dazzling? Or cringe at the thought of being asked, “Why don’t you control your kid, lady?” Of course, mothers take this feedback personally. To us it seems there is a direct correlation between our mothering skills and how well our children are navigating life. The problem with measuring how well (or not) we are parenting by how well (or not) children are doing is the underlying belief that we are in complete control. We are not. Yes, mothers have the privilege and responsibility to guide, discipline and encourage children, but ultimately they are separate and distinct from us. We are free to celebrate their successes and guide them through failures without keeping a report card on mothering. Mothering myths can reel in moms at every stage. They make false promises of what motherhood should look like, which is a set-up for exhaustion, fear and disappointment. No more! Let’s band together this Mother’s Day and bust as many myths about mothering as we can. Talk to the moms in your life—share with each other what you’ve learned about motherhood. Better Parenting Some of the best parenting advice

around comes from the instructions given by flight attendants just before take off: “If traveling with young children, please put on your own oxygen mask before assisting your child.” Why? Because no one can help anyone if they pass out from lack of oxygen. The same is true of parenting. If you run out of steam, you will run out of everything needed to parent well—energy, patience, creativity, perseverance, will-power—it’s a long list. Enter healthy self-care. Self-care is critical, but what to do about the pangs of guilt that can come with taking time away from parenting duties? And how to find the time in an already crowded schedule of raising kids? Let’s address guilt first: self-care is the opposite of selfishness. Without it, parents grow weary as the energy required to care for little ones is depleted. Taking time to refresh and reconnect to who you are in addition to “Mommy” or “Daddy” renews the strength and enthusiasm necessary for parenting well. Healthy self-care increases patience and decreases stress. This is especially true for parents of a child with special needs, single parents, or in families where a parent works especially long hours or is deployed. So how to find the time? The best way to make self-care part of parenting life is to incorporate it

into a regular routine. Then you’ll be more likely to keep it up, thinking of it as a necessary part of your day, not just a once-in-awhile treat (although once-in-awhile treats are nice, too). Here are ways to weave healthy selfcare into daily life. Wake up before the family. Set the alarm for one hour before the kids wake up. Use the time to do whatever inspires and motivates you—read, workout, write in a journal or take a relaxing bath. Starting the day with a little breathing room will help you feel more relaxed and energized for the day ahead. Enlist a helper during peak hours. Trying to wrestle kiddos through homework, dinner, baths, and bedtime can feel like a lot. Particularly for single parents and parents of children with special needs. A helper can be paid or unpaid, a friend or relative, even a neighborhood teenager. The extra hands can lighten the load and extend your energy. Plan meals. Planning ahead takes extra work at first, but once you’ve got a plan, it can save your sanity— especially at dinnertime. Start by prepping just a few meals in advance each week. Team up with family and friends for ideas. Remember to include healthy snacks not only for kids, but also for you to keep energy up and moods stable (leftover sandwich crusts don’t count). continued on p. 24

Keep a calendar. A family calendar is a sanity-saving tool that will feel like extra work at first, but can help prevent overbooking your life. Get help with housekeeping. Parenting and housekeeping are both timeconsuming jobs. If you’re feeling the pressure of trying to keep up, consider hiring someone to help. Professional housekeeping services are available weekly, monthly or as needed. Shop around for the service that fits your family’s needs and budget. Or get creative and offer to swap housekeeping time with family or friends—once a month one of you takes the kids while the other one cleans in peace. Allow the kids to play independently. Some parents struggle with using time for self-care because they believe children should be engaged in meaningful, structured activities at all times. Free play is a vital part of child development. It’s where kids practice creativity, exercise independence and grow social skills. Give yourself permission to let go of feeling like every moment must be structured; give your kids the gift of learning to play independently and navigate down time. Once you’ve freed up time for yourself, do things that refresh and restore your energy. Read a book on a topic that interests you or makes you smile. Take an exercise class or join an adult sports league—kids aren’t the only ones who can have fun on a playing field. Schedule a weekend away or a night out with friends (see Mom’s Night Out article on page 26 for ideas). Whatever you choose to do, remember that healthy self-care fuels better parenting. It helps us be the kind of parents we spend so much energy trying to become—well rested with more patience and stamina, less stress and more energy. or scientist, but you’re worried because camp is unfamiliar territory. Help prepare your child for what’s ahead with these tips to make his first camp experience a positive one.

• Children should memorize full name, address and a parent’s cell phone number before camp begins.

• Packaging often poses a problem for little fingers. Practice opening wrappers and containers at home. Don’t assume camp staff will have time to assist everyone at lunchtime.

• Many day camps require closed-toe shoes and many activities need kids to get shoes on and off quickly. Practice tying shoelaces; if your little one hasn’t mastered this skill before camp starts, consider a pair of Velcro shoes. Even then, do trial runs until he masters getting shoes on and off in a timely manner. Teach them to tie a jacket around their waist, if necessary. • For half-day camp, apply sunscreen before leaving; children who attend full-day camp should know how and when to reapply.

• One in 13 children has a food allergy; it’s likely that someone at camp will, too. Swapping snacks sounds like fun, but it’s not safe for many kids. Cross-contamination can pose a big problem for kids allergic to nuts or gluten. Teach children not to share food and to respect other people’s space by not touching their lunchbox and food. • Stop yourself the next time you start to clean up after your kids. Teach children how to sort trash from recyclables, throw items in proper bins, and most importantly, not to expect adults to clean up after them. Don’t do it again.” If an annoying behavior continues from another child, ask a camp counselor for help. Camp is a place to try new things. Let your child know he’s expected to participate in all activities, and that it’s OK if he doesn’t do everything just right. A child who pouts until he gets his way or is unwilling to try new things may not be ready for camp.
