Contour Makes It Easier for Parents to Find Kid-Friendly TV Programming
For Sports Fans. Contour also offers a sports app so that family members who love sports can get game scores and statistics on the television screen without interrupting what the family is watching.
Technology has improved many aspects of the home, including how we experience television, and it just got easier, more fun and more convenient with Contour, an advanced video service from Cox Communications.
DVR Devotee. With 2 terabytes of storage, you can store up to 300 hours of high definition programming, or 1,000 hours of standard definition, with the DVR available through Contour. It also allows you to record six programs at the same time (so there’s no sibling fighting over who gets to record their show).
Contour by Cox offers the simplest and fastest way to search for quality kid-friendly programming, whatever age your child is – from toddlers to teens – and with summer break in full swing, what better time to experience the family-friendly features available through Contour? And, parents still have access to their favorite shows and movies.
Free On Demand Entertainment. Access thousands of movies, TV shows and children’s programming instantly – all searchable through colorful poster art. And, many of the titles are available for free.
With Contour, easy-to-use features such as a voice controlled remote, smart search and recommendations, and personalized apps help every member of the household find what they want, when they want it. Talk to Your Remote. The Contour voice controlled remote responds to voice commands to change channels, find shows, and get recommendations. It also responds to phrases such as “Show me movies” when searching for something to watch. You can even play a fun game with the family. The voice controlled remote even recognizes movie quotes such as “To infinity and beyond” and “Hasta la vista, baby” to make searching easier. The kids will have fun finding movies by speaking famous quotes into the remote. And, if you have grandparents or other family members in the household with impaired vision, the voice controlled remote helps them find their programming. Parental Controls. Using your remote and a PIN, you can block programming by channel or rating (movie or TV). You can also select days and times to “lock” access to your TV. Room to Room. Parents are always on the go, even inside their home. If you start watching a TV show or movie in one room,
but are interrupted by parental duties and want to finish watching it at a later time in another room, no worries. Contour provides smaller boxes for additional TVs in the home in case you start a program in the living room but need to finish watching it in your bedroom after the kids are tucked in for the night. Weather, News and Traffic Apps on Your TV Screen. Speaking of busy parents, you can launch Contour apps on your television to check traffic before that commute to work or running errands, and local weather to decide whether the kids need a jacket or if it’s a good day to head to the park. And, the apps are launched on the TV screen without interrupting your little one’s show or movie. TV for Teens. Teens love streaming their shows and movies on their tablets and smartphones, and Contour doesn’t disappoint here. Contour apps will allow them (with your permission) to stream programming seamlessly anywhere in the home on their tablet or smartphone.
Contour isn’t about watching TV. It’s about elevating your family’s in-home entertainment experience. Learn more at www.cox.com/contour, visit a Cox Solutions Store for a hands-on demo, or call 888-552-4188.

Our San Diego
Publisher’s Letter
Out with Summer, In with School! School will begin later this month, so there’s still time to
make the most of summer. Scan 10 fun outings on page 20; two highlights for me are 1) See the live stream of the eclipse in the Giant Dome at the Fleet Center on August 21, and 2) Take in a drive-in movie in South Bay or Santee.
These outings let kids be kids. Let them play. Must we rush them all the time? School is for learning, which doesn’t always have to happen in the classroom. Let kids learn to relax with nothing on their agenda for the afternoon. They will have more energy than if they are busy every second of the day. Reinforce this by reading more on page 18. Once the kids start school, they go from one year to the next, transitioning from grade to grade. Writer Kristen Castillo interviewed local teachers for tips to help make these transitions. She also asked parents for their feedback. Find out what they have to say on page 26. Look on page 42 to find a couple of lunch box ideas, including directions for a simple, clever way to use a banana as a message board. Since viewing the eclipse is a lifetime experience, my husband, Larry, and I are planning to travel to Nebraska (dead center) to view it at approximately 1pm CST on August 21!
Families
What’s one thing you’re going to do with the kids before school starts? Kristen Castillo freelance writer Before school starts, we’re having a beach day in Coronado!
Alyssa Navapanich art contributor We have a tradition on the last day of summer vacation. We pack homemade burritos and go to the beach late in the afternoon. We swim, build drip castles, have dinner, watch the sunset and talk about our favorite moments of summer. Lisa Gipson, managing editor My family is attending a Sunset Luau at Catamaran Resort on Mission Bay. Polynesian food, music and dancing sounds like a great way to spend a summer evening. We’re excited!

Bean Sprouts cafes offer an innovative approach to healthy food at kid-friendly destinations across the country—and now San Diegans can enjoy Bean Sprouts inside The New Children’s Museum downtown. Bean Sprouts was founded by Shannon Seip and Kelley Parthen, two moms who saw a need for healthier kids meals. Bean Sprouts adheres to strict ingredient guidelines featuring organic and sustainable foods, compostable packaging and eco-friendly design. Their innovative approach to food has young visitors and their parents in mind. Unlike other eateries, the Bean Sprouts children’s menu is conveniently displayed on a low counter, empowering kids to make their own healthy choices. The award-winning “Imaginibbles” menu offers tasty snacks like “Crocamole” (guacamole and veggies made to look like a crocodile) and the “Grilledzilla” (a gooey grilled cheese and veggie sandwich in the shape of Godzilla). Grown-ups enjoy an equally tempting adult menu, plus organic coffee, fresh smoothies and a variety of espresso drinks. Bean Sprouts also offers choices for families with picky eaters, allergies and other dietary challenges. Bean Sprouts 200 W. Island Ave., Downtown San Diego 619-501-1916 www.beansprouts.com

What’s the Rush? Let kids be kids
Imagine a mother teaching a
4-month-old baby to use a fork because eventually she wants the child to feed himself. Or a father taking a preschooler to a tutoring center to give the child a “head start.” Silly, right? “We should give childhood back to our children” writes David Elkind, author of The Hurried Child. After 30 years of teaching and raising two children, I could not agree more. How do we hurry children? One example is our school system that wants children to learn academic skills long before they’re needed—and long before most children are ready. Force-feeding academics leaves little or no time for painting, free play, recreational reading or open-ended, student-driven projects. Just because young children can be taught to do something doesn’t mean they should be. Numerous valid studies show that the earlier children are taught to read, the less they enjoy reading and the less motivated they are to read. Other studies show that the gains produced by early reading instruction usually disappear by third grade. So, what’s the rush? I realized how we hurried our children when I looked back on seven years worth of family calendars. I used
18 • SanDiegofamily.com • August 2017
color-coded pens and kept copious notes. There were very few unscheduled days. Between our son’s sports schedules and our daughter’s dance activities, there were no weekdays without extracurricular activities. Add in school responsibilities, social activities, Girl Scouts, music lessons and chores—you get the idea. I thought that by encouraging these things, we were doing the best thing for our children. They were enjoying their extracurricular events and my husband and I were providing valuable opportunities for growth and development. What I ignored was this: Children require down time in order to recharge, become more resourceful by learning to combat boredom on their own, reconnect with family and just play. By micromanaging and overscheduling, we do kids a grave disservice. They come to believe that it is a parent’s (or teacher’s) responsibility to keep them engaged and entertained. When your children complain that they’re bored, do you rush to the rescue or do you suggest they figure it out? Overscheduling can create stress, anxiety, frustration and imbalance.
Perhaps your kids enjoy staying busy with lots of activities, but keep in mind that children are lousy at determining what’s best for them. This is precisely why parental authority, wisdom and experience are crucial. Think about the last time you woke up with absolutely nothing scheduled for the day. If you’re like me, you greeted that unplanned day with joy! Imagine how it feels to a child. When was the last time your child had nothing scheduled and could play all day? Take a look at your calendar. Pare down to one physical and one social activity per week; add music lessons and religious activities if you’re inclined. Give children (and yourself) the gift of unfettered time during which they can exercise creative energy, read for pleasure, take a walk, ride a bike or do nothing. Significantly reduce the number of times you have to say “hurry up” and you’ll increase the time you have to connect as a family. v Wendy Faucett is a retired teacher, Certified Leadership Parenting Coach and San Diego County CASA, who is as busy as she wants to be.

Alyssa Paper Bag Memory Book Create a unique memory book to save special keepsakes and photos— and to reminisce about all the fun you had this summer! Discussion Points for Parents/Teachers • Talk about your favorite summer memories. • What types of things can you keep in the pages/pockets of your book? • Discuss turning found and recycled objects into art. Supplies Mat to cover work area 4-6 paper lunch bags Paint (your favorite colors) & paintbrush Hole punch or stapler Scissors Ribbon or string Collage items from summer trips/activities:
Directions • If desired, paint both sides of the bags and allow to dry. Or, leave the bags plain. • Fold each bag in half to create a crease. • Stack the bags on top of each other. Make sure the open ends are on opposite sides to prevent one side of the book being more bulky than the other. • Punch two holes on the center crease of each bag, making sure the bags line up evenly. (Or, staple the bags together in the crease.) • Run a piece of ribbon or string through the holes and tie together on the outside “binding.” • Decorate pages with collage items, photos and Washi tape.

Benefits of Natural Consequences
Sarah Lyons
Natural consequences happen as a result of a certain behavior or choice. Parents need to consider letting their children experience natural consequences by not “saving” them from their choices and allowing them to learn from their mistakes.
11 Creative
• If a child forgets his lunch at home, he eats whatever is on the school menu that day (or not at all). • If a child refuses to wear a jacket, he may get cold.
Consequences for Kids Before becoming a parent, the idea
of disciplining children seemed fairly straightforward. It follows logic that if you set limits, use consistency, and respond firmly, but lovingly, children will learn to correct their behavior. As I became a more experienced mother, I quickly learned that traditional methods of discipline, such as time out, do not work with every child. Thinking outside of traditional methods of discipline and trying new and creative consequences may improve behavior. Here are some ideas: Buy it back. Toys left on the floor after the designated clean-up time are confiscated. Children may buy toys back from parents for $1 each. If children don’t earn an allowance, they may do something extra around the house to earn toys back. Practice makes perfect. When chores aren’t done to a parent’s standards, kids “practice” doing them over and over until they become an expert. Be sure to show the kids the proper way to do the chore first. Silly faces. “If siblings are fighting, they have to make five faces at each other,” says Marianne Lincoln, mother
24 • SanDiegofamily.com • August 2017
of five. “They end up laughing and forget what they are fighting about to begin with.” Team spirit. Siblings who argue are assigned projects or chores to work on as a team. By the end of the day, they will learn to work together. Open-door policy. If your teen slams the bedroom door when angry, take away the privilege of privacy and remove the door for a week. Donations. If kids consistently leave clothing on the floor, collect it for donation to a local charity. If they aren’t ready to donate the items, they can pay parents what it would cost at a thrift store. Car safety. If kids are shouting or rowdy in the car, pull over and wait silently until they are quiet. Take time. If a child dawdles and makes everyone late, have him sit out of the fun for the same amount of time he wasted at home. Early to bed. If a child has a bad attitude and you suspect it’s because he isn’t getting enough sleep, move bedtime up 5 minutes each time you need to remind him to improve his attitude.
• If a child forgets homework, he will experience the teacher’s consequence (and probably remember homework next time). • If a teen stays up too late, he will be tired the next day. Natural consequences help kids take ownership of their actions and can have lasting benefits. They help kids think about the potential outcome of their choices.
Kid’s choice. When children misbehave, try allowing them to choose their own consequence. This gives them control over their fate, teaches them to think about their actions ahead of time, and makes imposing the consequence easier. With some patience, a sense of humor, and some creativity, parents can use the art of creative consequences to teach their children in a fresh and memorable way that will have lasting results. v Sarah Lyons is a freelance writer and stay-at-home mother of six children, including 18-month-old triplets.

School Transitions How to prepare for the next level
Back to school brings a mix of emotions for
parents and kids. Feelings range from excitement and hopefulness to uncertainty and anxiety. It’s also a chance for a fresh start. San Diego Family Magazine reached out to education experts and local parents for tips to help kids make smooth transitions throughout their academic years. Here’s what they had to say.
Prep for Preschool Early childhood programs help kids get ready for kindergarten. Preschoolers learn basics like colors, shapes, fine and gross motor skills, as well as confidence, independence and social skills. Shalini Dhiman, owner of The Goddard School preschool in Carlsbad says parents can help kids adjust to preschool by visiting the school and classroom before the first day to get familiar with the surroundings. Help introduce kids to classmates on the first day, and don’t over dress them for school. “Over dressing can make them self-conscious and shy,” Dhiman says. Reassure and encourage. “Daily reminders such as ‘Have fun, stay safe and make good choices’ is something parents should tell their children every morning,” says Dhiman. She also suggests parents kiss and hug their kids daily.
Kick off to Kindergarten Kindergarten used to be a time for kids to acclimate to school. Nowadays it’s more robust and can set children up for future educational success. “While kindergarten remains a year of discovery, it is also an academic year,” says Donna Marriott, a program manager for the San Diego Unified School District. “Children learn the foundations for reading, writing, and math while they learn how school works and who they are as learners.” Kindergarteners experience many changes including losing their first teeth, developing social skills and moving from concrete thinkers to more abstract, conceptual thinkers, says Shawn Edwards, Head of School at LePort School in Solana Beach. “Some will already be readers; others will still be working on fine motor skills needed to master writing and other academic skills,” she says. To get kids ready for kindergarten, Marriott says teachers suggest three things: 1) Read to your child often, in English or in your native language; 2) Talk (and listen) to your children about books, experiences, events and family stories; and 3) Nudge your child to write, which at this age could be drawing.
Parent Feedback Christina Kalberg of Carlsbad says: I wish I had known how important it would be to help my son practice simple things like raising his hand when he wants to talk, sitting still while reading and working quietly. They don’t really teach these things in preschool and I had not focused on manners like this at home. When he got to kindergarten, it was difficult for him to follow these simple rules. The biggest need for kids entering preschool and kindergarten is learning sight words and the sounds of the letters in the alphabet. Knowing these two things helps tremendously with reading.

Marching into Middle School Excited for Elementary School During the early elementary years, kids learn foundational skills in reading, writing and math. “Capitalize, encourage and build on children’s natural curiosity about the world—experiment, read, watch and do,” says Teresa Walter, senior director of curriculum and instruction for the San Diego County Office of Education. She encourages parents to cook with their children and visit community parks and museums together. Kids at this age need to know they’re capable. This is when they’re growing socially and start to develop independence, confidence and compromise. “Elementary children are social beings,” says Edwards. Kids this age develop critical thinking skills through conversing, debating and solving problems. She recommends giving kids free time to play and explore things that interest them, such as music, sports and a range of hobbies. Kids thrive when parents get involved. Marriott says teachers appreciate when families ask questions, attend parent-teacher conferences and school events, and volunteer when possible.
Parent Feedback Kalberg says: The best thing you can do to prepare for the transition from kindergarten to elementary school is work with your kids a little each day in the summer so they don’t fall behind. They are like sponges at this age and can absorb a lot in just 10–20 minutes. Also, make reading fun. Join a summer reading club through the library and give your child a reason to want to read as much as possible in the summer.
Middle school is filled with emotional and educational milestones including working independently and in groups, taking responsibility, and developing organizational skills. After years of being comfortable in elementary school, students enter a new environment with new expectations. “Parents worry their children will not receive the individual attention they are accustomed to,” says Scott Irwin, principal of Dana Middle School in Point Loma. “Children worry about getting lost, making friends or not being able to handle the academic requirements of the secondary environment.” “Middle school is the first time students start rotating classes,” says Tracy Wilson, school counselor coordinator for the San Diego County Office of Education. The rotation can be tough to manage and the middle school transition can be filled with drama, so it’s important parents stay involved and ask questions. “They may not get complete answers, but asking the question is the important part,” says Wilson. Even if kids roll their eyes when you talk to them in front of their friends, deep down they still want validation. She also advises parents to give kids space to make mistakes. “When they fail or make a poor choice, talk to them about it,” Wilson says. “Try not to yell or tell them they are bad. Instead, help them process what happened.” Parents can also help students Parent Feedback stay on task. “Help them create When asked how parents can a time management plan and prepare for the transition personalized study plan,” says to middle school, Amber June Lewis of Balboa School in Caswell of Chula Vista says: Escondido. She suggests parents I suggest taking the kids prepare kids for middle school by to the new school as much reviewing basic math, language as possible. I took my kids art and grammar skills before with me every time I needed school starts. to turn in paperwork or Parents should keep a healthy pick up papers. Each time distance while still staying they walk on the campus, involved in their child’s life. For it prepares them for their example, when a child receives a first day of school. Also, bad grade, parents can help the work on organization skills. student write an email to their Juggling six different classes teacher asking for help. and teachers requires that “Do not send the email kids keep their paperwork yourself,” says Irwin, explaining organized! the student should CC a parent. “It is completely appropriate for kids to correspond with their teachers directly regarding grades.” Be sure to talk to kids about social situations. “Middle school students often experience and succumb to peer pressure, and many experience bullying,” says Barbara Higgins, student services coordinator for the San Diego County Office of Education. Keep communication lines open. v Kristen Castillo is an award-winning freelance writer and local mom.
School transitions can be more complicated when parents are divorced. Read “5 Back-to-School Tips for Divorced Parents” to make the new school year easier for kids: www.SanDiegoFamily.com/resources/ education-directory/2053. August 2017 • SanDiegofamily.com •

READY FOR KINDERGARTEN The pencils are sharp, the backpack is
ready, and you’ve done everything you can to prepare your child for the first day of kindergarten. Then it hits you— your baby is going to kindergarten! There are plenty of ways to prepare a child for that first day, but what’s a mom (or dad) to do when it’s time to say goodbye to the child who has been by her side for five years? From a mom who has sent three kids to kindergarten so far, here are tips to get ready for that monumental day.
Get Social You will feel more comfortable sending your child to school if you’re familiar with classmates and parents. Set up a play date at a local park and invite everyone to come. Get to know the names of children and parents so that you feel more connected. Consider starting a kindergarten playgroup so your child can spend time with new friends and classmates outside of school.
Volunteer Just because your child is at school doesn’t mean you can’t be involved. Consider joining the PTO/PTA, becoming a Scout leader, serving as a room parent, or ask the teacher where help is needed. Volunteering at your child’s school helps familiarize you

with staff, students and families now and for years to come.
Use Reinforcements It can be hard to let go—especially the first day of school. Keep your fears, nerves and sadness under wraps as you drop your child off. Kids can sense your feelings and may feed off of them, making drop off even more stressful. Be encouraging and upbeat. Some schools host a coffee or breakfast after drop-off the first day to connect parents who are missing their little one, too. Make plans to meet with a relative or friend for lunch to help stay positive. Sometimes a voice of reason and a shoulder to cry on are just what you need.

Make the Best of It I miss my kids when they’re at school, but I also make the best of it. When the kids are away, use time wisely. If you don’t have a job outside of home, spend the time working out, cooking, cleaning, running errands and recharging your own battery. Soon you will settle into a new normal. After seeing your child grow and thrive in kindergarten, sending him off to first grade should be easier. v Sarah Lyons is a freelance writer.

HOMESCHOOLING
BASICS Congratulations—You’ve decided to homeschool! As you prepare for your educational journey, keep in mind that there is no perfect way to homeschool. Every family has to do what’s right for their educational needs and schedule. Whether you start with a kindergartner or a middle schooler, there are common mistakes many new homeschoolers make—read on to learn how to avoid them.
1.
Don’t try to make home like school. No need to recreate every nuance of a public or private school, complete with desks, Smartboard, uniforms and a neverchanging schedule. There may be temptation to do things as they were done when you were growing up, but when the teacher is a parent, things are very different and require more flexibility.
2.
Ditch the desks. It’s not necessary to spend countless hours doing schoolwork at a desk. Everyone learns differently. Consider shorter chunks of teaching/learning time for each child. Take an occasional day off to visit the zoo, go on a nature walk, hit the library, watch a documentary or snuggle up and read. I include the kids in real-world things like errands, cooking, chores and finances. For older kids, a part-time job and volunteering also provide a realworld education.
36 • SanDiegofamily.com • August 2017
3.
Don’t try to keep up with everyone else. Don’t try to keep up with other homeschoolers or other kids in school. I started each of my kids a year “late” for school and they haven’t suffered. I always wondered what the rush was for kids to grow up—I knew one year wouldn’t make a difference. To me, that was one more year to let them be kids— play and explore on their own—without the “job” of school.
4.
Don’t pay an arm and a leg for curriculum. With so many free resources like www.ABCMouse .com, Khan Academy and the public library, there’s no reason for curriculum to be expensive (especially at the elementary school level). Check into virtual school options as well.
5.
Follow your child’s lead. It was so sad when I was in a homeschool store and heard a kid ask his mom if they could learn about a certain topic and she said, “No, these are the books that we are working on this year.” People are interested in different things. Help foster curiosity by exploring topics that interest your kids.
6.
Discontinue what doesn’t work. Switching curriculum halfway through the year is not uncommon. If a certain workbook makes you want to throw it across the
room, don’t power through it until the end of the school year. Find something else that works. That’s the beauty and freedom of homeschooling.
7.
Don’t do everything for your child. Encourage independence and independent thinking.
8.
Avoid comparing your family to others. It’s funny how I beat myself up because my kids don’t know how to do something my neighbor’s kids can do; and she beats herself up because she doesn’t take as many educational outings as I do. It’s great to have a homeschool tribe of people to discuss ideas with, but comparing and competition aren’t helpful to anyone, especially the kids.
9.
Don’t try to be perfect. The longer I homeschool, the more I enjoy telling newbies about mistakes I’ve made along the way. Making mistakes is normal, so go easy on yourself and have fun on this shorterthan-you-think journey with your kids. v Kerrie McLoughlin has been homeschooling her five kids for 10 years.

SCHOOL LUNCHES
Everyone can use a new lunch box idea or two! These recipes are from the popular cookbook series, Cooking with Trader Joe’s. Did you know? You can use a toothpick to write a message to your child on a banana; when it turns brown, the message magically appears. How fun!
ABC Pockets
Polka-Dot Pizza & Patterned Lunch
Why ABC? Avocado, Bacon and Cheese, of course! These mini pita pockets are the perfect size for kids and just as wonderful for adults. Use any cheese you like, but sharp cheddar is a classic pairing with bacon and creamy avocado.
Polka-dot pizza and fruit cubes make an eye-catching patterned lunch that’s a hit with kids.
Serves 4 8 mini whole wheat pita pockets 4 oz. grated cheddar cheese 4 slices uncured turkey bacon or fully cooked uncured pork bacon, cut in half 1 avocado 1 lemon, juiced 1. Cook bacon until crisp. If using fully cooked bacon, heat and crisp according to package directions. Blot bacon with paper towels.
1 English muffin 1 spoonful pizza sauce Shredded mozzarella cheese 2 each of three small fruits (such as grapes & tomatoes) 5-6 pepperoni slices or thinly sliced hot dogs ¼ each of two kinds of apples (such as Granny Smith & Gala) 1-inch-wide slices of two kinds of melon (such as cantaloupe & honeydew) Lemon juice 1. Spread pizza sauce on English muffin. Top with shredded cheese. Arrange meat slices. Toast in toaster oven until cheese is melted, about 5 minutes.
2. Slice avocado and sprinkle with lemon juice to prevent browning.
2. Skewer grapes & tomatoes in the same order on two drink swizzle sticks.
3. Stuff pita pockets with cheese, avocado and bacon. Toast a few minutes until cheese is melted.
3. Slice apples into wedges. Squeeze lemon juice over to prevent browning. Arrange in a pattern, alternating peel colors.
Shown in photo with: Snapea Crisps, strawberries and trail mix.
4. Arrange melon pieces in a pattern.
