Our San Diego

Publisher’s Letter

Love Your School, Language and Your Family Is your child struggling in school? Does he feel ill when it’s time to go to school? Does he talk negatively about his school? Or have you just moved into a new area in San Diego County? If the answer is yes to any of these questions, you might want to look into a different school. Family Magazine features schools that would like to introduce you to their program and tell you what they have to offer your child. Check out the Education Directory on page 22. Learning a second language is much easier for a child than an adult, or even a middle or high schooler. For middle/high school students, it is more difficult because they only receive 5 to 8 hours of instruction each week. California passed a law (effective July 1, 2017) that gives public schools more freedom to develop and offer bilingual programs. We may see an increase in dual immersion schools, in which students learn subject matter in two languages throughout the day. Turn to page 32 to find out what schools in the Chula Vista area are doing already. Afterschool programs come in all types: dance, gym, sports, etc. This month on page 38, contributing writer Lisa Pawlak tells us about South Bay Little League teams who have been successful in getting to the national playoffs—one even winning the Little League World Series. It’s sign-up time for Little League spring ball. Valentine’s Day isn’t the only time you should have a date night. Find ideas on where to go and what to do at www .SanDiegoFamily.com/resources/parenting/2015. Plan at least one date night every month. We love our readers and our advertisers—and are here to help you both. sharon@sandiegofamily.com Main Office: 1475 Sixth Avenue, Fifth Floor, San Diego, CA 92101 Mailing Address: P.O. Families

Where is your favorite spot for an indulgence or family date? Lisa Gipson, managing editor My family is a bit obsessed with the pancakes at Snooze A.M. Eatery (Del Mar and Hillcrest). My fave? Blueberry with lemon cream cheese filling. The pancake “flight” allows people to choose three different indulgent pancakes. Seriously, what’s not to love? Emily Dolton, contributing writer Our new favorite is iDessert in Little Italy. Create your virtual dessert on a provided iPad—then friendly staff builds it to order. The crepes are amazing, but our family favorite is the Vegas bowl: a flavored meringue filled with fruit, cake, nuts, gelato and dry ice fog! Tony Andrews marketing representative We love Ocean Beach—a small community with lots of history, beautiful cliffs and beaches, and a lot of trendy restaurants and breweries. You can get everything from pizza and lobster tacos to sushi and fine dining—all by the ocean. Can’t beat it. Adrienne Sigeti administrative assistant My favorite dessert spot is Creamistry in Kearny Mesa, which specializes in ice cream made with liquid nitrogen, making it extra smooth and creamy. It’s completely customizable with hundreds of toppings to choose from. I highly recommend a scoop of Nutella with fresh strawberries. Now open in Carmel Valley and soon in San Marcos!

View from the top of the historic California Tower at Balboa Park’s Museum of Man.

Millions of people visit San

Diego each summer. While you have this popular family destination “to yourself” in February, take time to fall in love with the city again. Plan family dates to explore a favorite spot—or find a new gem.

Take a hike! Cowles Mountain offers incredible sweeping views all the way to the ocean in a one-hour round trip hike. Near the beach, Torrey Pines State Reserve trail winds along incredible coastline. Both trails are reasonable walks for kids. Come prepared with a special end-of-hike treat to ward off grouchiness. Savor every step in glorious San Diego sunshine. Get more great tips for hiking with kids at www.SanDiegoFamily.com/ out-and-about/over-600-thingsto-do/1927. Share a sunset. We live in East County, so my son often asks when we’re going to watch the sunset “for real” over the ocean. This Valentine’s Day we’re planning a family date at Sunset Cliffs in Point Loma, complete with a picnic basket to enjoy the sunset as only those on the West Coast can.

Climb the historic California Tower. After being closed to the public for decades, the tower at Balboa Park’s Museum of Man is again open to the public. Visitors climb 125 steps up a winding staircase and end with spectacular views around the county from Baja to the bay and east to the mountains. Kids ages 6 and up are welcome as long as they can walk themselves. No room for piggyback rides here. Reserve a time slot and purchase tickets online. www.MuseumofMan.org/exhibits/ california-tower

Celebrate a San Diego tradition. Remember your first fish taco— crunchy goodness covered in white sauce and salsa? My college roommate dragged me to the original Rubio’s on Mission Bay Drive and I’ve never looked back. Celebrate San Diego’s delicious fish taco tradition where it began or at your favorite fish taco joint. Indulge in regal elegance. Splurge on Sunday brunch at Hotel del Coronado’s Crown Room. Feast on rich classics and seafood; and save room for the festive donut bar where kids delight in adding

their own custom toppings. www .HotelDel.com/restaurant-coronado/ crown-room Stroll through Old Town. The grassy plaza is a great place to spend a relaxing day or let kids burn off energy. On weekends, history comes alive with blacksmith demonstrations, tortilla-making, mariachi music and folkloric dancers who fill the Fiesta de Reyes stage. The best part? All the entertainment is free. www .FiestadeReyes.com Visit a brewery. Go ahead—take the kids. Enjoy a pint at one of the many kid-friendly pubs throughout the county. Stone Brewing in Liberty Station and Escondido offers spacious patio dining surrounded by a garden atmosphere. The kids’ menu even has “real” food—simple homemade twists on kid favorites. www.stonebrewing .com For a more casual vibe, head to Pizza Port after a walk on the sand in Ocean Beach, Solana Beach or Carlsbad. Sit family-style on picnic benches and enjoy fresh, delicious pizza and salads, and one of Pizza Port’s own brews. www.PizzaPort.com

Experience a little “Midway Magic.” Visit the USS Midway and teach kids to say “thanks for your service” to men and women in uniform. Spend the day onboard exploring the massive aircraft carrier and its exciting exhibits or book an overnight adventure through the Little Skippers Program that will create lasting memories. Kids ages 4-7 and their parents live like sailors for the evening, sleeping in assigned bunks and eating in the mess hall. The program’s focus is on teaching the little skippers the value of teamwork. Parents stay with their child throughout the evening’s activities, which end with cookies and milk on deck. www .midway.org Show love for the beach. San Diego Coastkeeper and Surfrider Foundation make it easy with clean-up events offered at least two Saturdays per month from Oceanside to Coronado. www.sdcoastkeeper .org/act/fix/attend-an-event/beachcleanups Go whale watching. About 20,000 gray whales migrate through San Diego’s waters each year. Art with Alyssa:

Alyssa Navapanich

Pop Art Hearts Pop Art artists of the 1960s, such as Andy Warhol, used everyday objects as inspiration for art. In the 1980s another group of artists inspired by Pop Art followed suit, and the Neo-Pop movement was born. These Pop Art Hearts are inspired by the amazing art of two artists: Jim Dine (Pop Art) and Romero Britto (Neo-Pop). This is a fun and festive project to do with kids for Valentine’s Day or anytime of the year.

Supplies Construction paper or cardstock (9”x12”) Pencil and paintbrushes Tempera paint: black or white, plus desired colors (red, orange, yellow, blue, pink, purple are good starters) Cup Paper towel or clean sponge Newsprint, paper grocery bag, placemat or other item to cover workspace

Directions • Using a pencil, draw a large heart in the center of the paper. • Paint the center of the heart (striped, blended or solid) using bright colors. • Paint the background using different colors so the heart “pops” off the page. If you use warm colors (red, yellow and orange) for the heart, try using cool colors (blue, green, purple) for the background. Let dry slightly. • Paint patterns on the heart or the background (or both). Dots, circles, straight lines, zigzag lines, small flowers— any pattern works.* Let dry completely. • Outline the heart in black, white (or other bold color) paint. *Tip: To avoid unwanted blending of colors, rinse paintbrushes between colors and blot wet brush on paper towel or sponge. M For more tips about this project, visit www .SanDiegoFamily.com/for-the-kids/crafts-for-kids/2014. Alyssa Navapanich is an art enthusiast who teaches art to elementary school kids in North County.

Teacher of the Year Awards San Diego County Teacher of the Year winners are announced during “Cox Presents: A Salute to Teachers” —a live, televised show. This event is the culmination of a process run by SDCOE and local school districts. Each individual school district runs their own selection process to designate their Teacher of the Year—typically based on criteria such as student achievement, professional development, community involvement, teaching philosophy, knowledge of educational issues and trends, promotion and development of the teaching profession, accountability, and ability to serve as ambassadors of education. If you have an educator in mind that you’d like considered, contact your local school district to inquire how your district’s teacher of the year is chosen. Once all of the district winners are selected, teachers are eligible to apply for the San Diego County Teachers of the Year Awards. These awards are also the official stepping-stone to the California Teacher of the Year and National Teacher of the Year programs. M Lisa Pawlak is an award-winning contributing writer and Encinitas resident. Looking for more ways to thank a teacher? Will Your Child Attend a Dual Immersion School? Gabriela Moseman grew up in Mexico

and knows how important it is to be bilingual and biliterate. When she worked in Mexico City, she encountered an employee who spoke fluent Spanish, but couldn’t read or write the language. “It was shocking,” she says. “You would think someone who speaks Spanish, reads and writes Spanish—and that’s not the case.” That’s why Moseman’s 8-year-old son Cody is enrolled in a Spanish-English dual immersion program at Veterans Elementary in Chula Vista. “My son needs to learn not only to speak Spanish, but how to read and write in Spanish,” she says, explaining the second grader is also studying Mandarin outside of school.

Bilingual Learning Multilingual education will be an option in California starting in July 2017. That’s because Prop 58, which allows school districts to start dual language immersion (DI) programs to teach in a language other than English to native and non–native English speakers, passed with

Erin Dare, principal of Heritage Elementary in Chula Vista, won a Leadership in Biliteracy award for her school’s success in Dual Language Immersion. 73.5 percent statewide approval. In San Diego County, 72 percent of voters’ approved. The new law removes the 18-year mandate under prop 227 that required California students to be taught English-only, unless parents signed waivers. “Prop 58 really just helps remove some of the barriers,” says Olympia Kyriakidis, Director of Dual Language and the Achievement Gap Task Force at San Diego County Office of Education. She says the waiver requirement made parents skeptical about multilingual learning. “With that being eliminated, it helps clear the way. You don’t need a waiver to be in a STEM program or an arts program, so why would you need a waiver to be in a language program?” Bilingual programs provide cognitive benefits, as well as fluency in reading, writing, listening and speaking in two or more languages. “The biggest misconception is that kids won’t learn English and that absolutely is not true,” says Kyriakidis. “Research study after research study shows if you have a quality program, the kids will thrive. The first DI program in the county started in 1978 at Longfellow Elementary in San Diego Unified. Currently over 100 schools countywide offer immersion programs, including districts like Chula Vista Elementary, Escondido, Lakeside and San Diego Unified. While most of these schools are K–8, some programs continue through high school, where students can earn a California State Seal of Biliteracy on their diploma. In Chula Vista, 21 schools offer dual immersion programs, with 5,400 students enrolled in the bilingual curriculum. That’s the largest DI program in California and one of the fastest growing in the country. It’s also a model for other districts looking to implement similar plans. While DI programs statewide and in San Diego will likely expand, it may take some time. “It’s too early to speculate,” says Kyriakidis, who has already received a lot of phone calls from school districts about what’s next. She says Prop 58 doesn’t require multilingual programs, but if 20 or more parents at a grade level or 30 parents school-wide are interested, a school district needs to “look into it and do it to the extent possible.” If dual immersion is something you’d like to see at your child’s school, be sure to contact your local school district to express interest.

Creating Opportunities Traditionally students learn Spanish, French or another language in high school, but many parents don’t want to wait. “What do I love about dual immersion? It gives [kids] the opportunity to learn two languages when they’re young because when they’re young, it’s easy,” says Jen Wade, who doesn’t speak Spanish but is making sure her children are learning the language. Second grader Marley (age 8) and kindergartener Marvin

(age 5) are dual immersion students at Veterans Elementary. “I want them to learn Spanish fluently so when they get older, they can use it to get good jobs and interact more in society,” says Wade. “We’re such a diverse group and it’s very important for them to know both languages.

How it Works Even though Spanish is the most popular for immersion programs, it isn’t the only option. According to Kyriakidis, Mandarin (in addition to Spanish) is offered at Riverview Elementary in Lakeside and Barnard Elementary in San Diego Unified; both schools are pipelines into their local middle and high schools, which have the goal of program participants graduating with the Seal of Biliteracy. San Diego Unified’s immersion choices also include French, German and Hebrew. Programs can be one-way and two-way. In a one-way program, a group of English speaking students are immersed in the foreign language; while in a two-way program, native and non-native English speakers learn both languages together. The most popular models are the 50/50, where half of the day’s instruction is in English and half in Spanish; and 90/10, in which the second language, such as Spanish, is the primary instruction each day, starting in kindergarten. In that model, English is added gradually as students progress through grade levels: 80/20 in second grade, 70/30 in third grade and so on. Wade encourages other parents to try dual immersion. “If you get an opportunity to teach your kid two different languages, especially being so close to the border, I’d say do it in a heartbeat.” M Freelance writer Kristen Castillo is a three-time Emmy recipient with professional experience in print, broadcast and online media. Want your child to start learning a second language right now? Check our Education Directory (starting on p. 22) for bilingual schools with afterschool programs.

PLAY BALL!

Lisa Pawlak

Local Little League Teams Shine

Ah, baseball. It fills many

with nostalgic, childhood memories—the smell of fresh cut grass and leather gloves, the sound of a bat connecting with a ball, the joy of high-fives and team celebrations after a wellplayed game. This beloved sport, long established as America’s favorite pastime, is as popular as ever. Each year thousands of local kids participate in Little League ball. In recent years, San Diego has collectively cheered as a series of dominant, South Bay teams have represented our region at the Little League Baseball World Series. Park View Little League 2016 won the Divisional and moved on to Western Region finals.

Little League has grown significantly from its original three teams in Williamsport, Pennsylvania in 1939, to over 200,000 teams today, located in all 50 states and in more than 80 countries. The league offers baseball and softball for ages 4-16. Additionally, the Challenger Division allows kids with special needs to play, with the help of a volunteer “buddy.” Along with teaching fundamentals such as throwing, catching and batting, another primary goal of Little League is for kids to develop lifelong skills and character traits like sportsmanship, fair play, citizenship, discipline, courage, loyalty and teamwork.

Players can then take these essential skills off the field and apply them in all aspects of their lives. Although all skill levels are welcome, it is a competitive game. The most competitive teams ultimately qualify for the Little League Baseball World Series, a culminating event held in Williamsport every August. In 2009, the world watched as our Chula Vista champions, Park View Little League, won the series and became World Champions. Since this astounding breakthrough, three additional South Bay teams—also located within Little League California’s District

42’s boundaries—have followed Park View 2009’s footsteps to Williamsburg. These teams include Eastlake 2013 (United States Champions), Sweetwater Valley 2015 and Park View 2016. Ernie Lucero, who became the district’s administrator in 2008, has traveled to the event with all four teams. He describes the kids (all 12-year-olds) as “amazed, with mouths wide open” as they stepped onto the world stage of baseball, playing in front of huge crowds, with their games broadcast via ESPN. “Prior to the 2009 Little League season, there was a Forbes article that labeled Chula Vista as the most boring city among the 100 largest cities in the United States,” Lucero reflects. “Make no mistake that the 2009 Park View Little League team changed the perception of Chula Vista forever.” He suggests that Park View’s success inspired and gave confidence to other kids in the community; and also says it was a great honor for all of them to be recognized by President Obama at the White House. “It is safe to say that Chula Vista is no longer a boring city,” Lucero adds. Lucero attributes his district’s success to a number of factors. First, most of the championship players start young, initially playing tee-ball and working their way up. Second, District 42 hosts large leagues (Park View, Eastlake and Sweetwater Valley all have 500+ players); so there are plenty of skilled players to choose from when putting together all-star teams. Finally, a strong community bond— with players growing up together, living within blocks of each other and attending the same schools—is a major contributing factor to these teams’ impressive accomplishments. The whole community—including extended families, friends and neighbors—comes out to cheer on the kids. San Diego also has the advantage of mild weather. Clear, sunny skies mean that kids can play year round. While specific dates vary league to

league, spring season generally consists of try-outs in January, followed by a player draft to create balanced teams; opening day is at the end of February or early March; regular games are played through June, followed by an all-star season until August. After that, kids can either play travel ball or participate in an informal Fall Ball season, lasting through December. Lucero stresses that parents don’t need to spend a lot of money on fancy gloves and bats, but they do need to always model positive behavior and make sure their kids are having fun. If your child wants to play this year, but you’ve missed the neighborhood league’s tryouts and/or registration deadlines, Lucero encourages you to

contact an administrator. Every effort will be made to place your child on a team. “Our focus is this—make sure your kids (boys or girls) enjoy what they’re doing, what they’re playing. That’s what makes these teams go,” Lucero says. “We have kids of all abilities; it doesn’t matter— they all get to play on a team. Kids want to enjoy Little League baseball with their buddies in the neighborhood.” Although the vast majority of Little Leaguers won’t play ball beyond high school, their childhood memories of the formative experience will remain with them forever. For more information, visit www.LittleLeague.org.

Did you know? Each year the San Diego Padres donate custom uniforms—Padres-branded fashion jerseys with matching caps— to more than 15,000 youth baseball players in over 50 leagues in the San Diego area. This gift allows lower Little League registration fees, or for funds to be re-allocated towards field improvements or essential team equipment.
