Road School and Sports: Are They for Your Family? Have you ever wished you could travel the world with your

kids? What an exciting adventure! When your kids become good travelers, consider road school. It can happen if you and your spouse can take time away from your jobs and travel. It’s more meaningful to stand in front of the Capitol in Washington, D.C. or in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. But traveling for months at a time isn’t always realistic—most parents can’t leave their jobs for that long. It’s possible to do some Southern California road schooling for a weekend or a day. In Julian, learn how to make rope; in Oak Glen, see what a colonial farm was like in your great-grandparents’ era. Think about the educational focus for the whole family. When you’re on the road, talk to locals—many times curators and other residents have many stories to tell. Slow down and enjoy! The kids won’t even realize how much they are learning. Read more about road school adventures on page 36.

You may have just moved to San Diego, moved from one area of the county to another, or perhaps your child isn’t doing well at his school and you’re looking for alternatives. This local shop pairs rich, flavorful cake with the ideal ratio of not-too-sweet frosting. Their mini cupcakes are perfectly sized for little hands. Is your child’s backpack too heavy? Heavy backpacks can cause injuries and low back pain that often last through adulthood. The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) offers these tips for kids who tote books to and from school. • Select a backpack that is the correct size for your child: the height of the backpack should extend from two inches below the shoulders to waist level (or slightly above the waist). • Wear padded shoulder straps on both shoulders so the weight is evenly balanced. • Load heaviest items closest to the child’s back and balance materials so the child can stand up straight. • Wear the backpack’s hip belt (if available) to improve balance and reduce strain on neck and shoulders. • Be sure the backpack weighs no more than 10 percent of the child’s bodyweight. Recreational vs. Club Sports There are important differences between recreational and club sports. Recreational sports are more for fun and fitness, while club sports have the added distinction of being more competitive and require a bigger time commitment. Recreational sports are played seasonally, have traditional practice and game schedules, may not require tryouts, and teams are often coached by volunteers. For these reasons, fees are generally lower. In comparison, club sports are often played year-round (and therefore, have more practices and games), require tryouts, participate in tournaments, may involve travel, and usually have paid, experienced coaches.

They also have a six-week sports program where toddlers can try a variety of sports. “The focus is not on winning, but rather character development, having fun and basics of the game,” says Pendleton. “Naturally, if a child shows a keen interest in a sport, it makes it easy to try. But trying something new is also great for development of the whole child.” Ease into sports to help children get adjusted and learn the basics, such as rules of play. “Look for programs that are not really intense and see if they like it,” says Cleveland, noting San Diego Sol’s Pee Wee Program for kids ages 5-7 includes one practice and one game per week. “We range from beginners to advanced,” she says. “We teach everyone.” Cleveland urges parents not to push their kids. “Sit back and enjoy the game,” she says. “Be a support on and off the court and listen to your kids. I want parents to enjoy the process because it goes fast.”

Things to Consider Sheridan encourages parents to ask experienced families about the culture of the sport they’re considering, including whether it’s recreational or competitive. Even though most sports have a season, there may be calls to play in off-season tournaments, clinics or camps. Kids may want to join travel teams in the offseason, which costs more. Sheridan says parents also need to consider the schedules of other family members, including siblings who may want to play sports, too.

Catch a game or performance. Go to your local park on a Saturday to watch soccer; get tickets to a dance recital; catch a high school basketball game; or go to a college or professional game. Watch YouTube. Type a sport’s name and a question, like “how to do karate” or “what is flag football” into Google. Note to parents: Watch videos before your child does, in case something is inappropriate or dangerous, such as a failed stunt. Take a field trip. Check out local museums and exhibits about sports. The Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center offers tours where kids can learn about BMX, archery, track and field, and other sports. The Sullivan Family Baseball Research Center at the San Diego Central Library is a treat for baseball enthusiasts. The California Surf Museum in Oceanside may inspire youngsters to catch a wave. Afterwards, hit the beach to watch surfers in action. Learn from the pros. The San Diego Padres offer five-day baseball camps for kids ages 5–12 during the summer. The San Diego Gulls offer a “Learn to Play Hockey” program, a four-week primer for first-time players ages 4–12.

Sport Options You may already know about popular sports such as swimming, basketball, baseball, gymnastics, soccer and hockey. Here are lesser-known sports: Archery - Individuals use a bow to shoot arrows at a target. Aquatics - Includes swimming, diving, rowing, sailing, stand-up paddle boarding, surfing and more. Cheer - Involves dancing, jumping, tumbling and stunts. Dance - Characterized by movement and choreography. Includes ballet, modern, jazz, hip hop, tap, hula and more. Fencing – Learn skill and endurance as two participants engage in modern swordplay. Field Hockey - Two teams play on a field using curved sticks trying to hit a ball into the opponent’s goal. Flag Football - Instead of tackling, players are downed when opponents pull their flag, which is attached to a belt. Golf - Individual or team sport; players use a club to hit a small ball into a series of holes on an open-air course. The winner uses the fewest possible strokes to finish. Kids as young as 6 can start. Karate - A martial art that uses hands and feet for defense. Lacrosse - Team sport where players throw, catch and carry a ball with a longhandled stick that has a shallow net. Rugby - Team sport where players can kick, carry or pass the ball hand-tohand. Tennis - Two or four players use rackets to hit a ball over the net. Eric Paredes was entering his

sophomore year at Steele Canyon High School in 2009 when he collapsed on the kitchen floor. Eric’s father, Hector Paredes, started CPR, but it was too late. Eric passed away at age 15 from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). They discovered he had an undetected heart condition. “Just because your child doesn’t show any symptoms, doesn’t mean your child’s heart is healthy,” says Eric’s mother, Rhina Paredes-Greeson. Most teenagers are not screened for heart abnormalities during pre-participation sports physicals or annual well-child exams. That is why Eric’s parents started the Eric Paredes Save A Life Foundation. The foundation provides free heart screenings to youth and young adults ages 12–25. Screenings are held all over San Diego County. “The biggest satisfaction for me is that we are detecting all these kids who are at risk for Sudden Cardiac Arrest. We are preventing these kids from dying,” Paredes-Greeson says. She is

quick to emphasize, however, that SCA can happen to anyone—it’s not limited to athletes. The screening includes a health history review, an EKG, a consultation with a cardiologist and an overview of CPR. It takes about an hour. If an abnormality is found, it is recommended students visit their own doctor for further testing. “It doesn’t hurt and it’s not invasive,” says Paredes-Greeson. “It’s well worth it.” Sarah Thompson, the foundation’s executive director, said the goal of the foundation is not only to prevent SCA, but to ensure schools have necessary equipment and resources to help save students: Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), along with CPR and AED training for staff and students. An AED is a portable device that treats SCA. It checks heart rhythm and sends an electric shock to the heart to try and restore a normal rhythm, according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

Since the Eric Paredes Save A Life Foundation began, it has hosted 42 free heart screenings across the county. Nearly 26,000 teenagers have been screened so far. Through the screenings, they found 439 people with previously undiagnosed heart abnormalities and 189 at risk for SCA. Eric never had the chance to graduate from high school and live out his dream of becoming a police officer. The Parades family takes pride in knowing their nonprofit organization provides hope for other children and families. v

Be Ready for Kindergarten? It’s not uncommon for parents to

wonder if children are learning and developing at the same pace as their peers. Many first-time parents have little understanding of what today’s kindergarteners are expected to know and process, and most only begin to think about kindergarten when their child turns 4.

The earlier parents play and communicate with children in a positive, inclusive and inquisitive way, the sooner their brains are trained to problem solve and learn to develop healthy relationships with peers. Kindergarteners are expected to understand turn taking, waiting and sharing. These skills are best taught at the dining table and during basic game play. Modeling empathy and fair play at home supports success in the classroom; and a child with strong and happy parental attachment will have greater success at being away from home. “Social-emotional readiness is more important than academics in child development,” says Mary Moser Cooper, a therapist and a respected authority on early childhood. Moser Cooper recommends parents

visit www.zerotothree.org to learn toddler milestones and supports for purposeful play. So, what are the best ways for parents to prepare children for kindergarten? Jan Garon, a TK (transitional kindergarten) and kindergarten teacher in San Diego Unified School District, suggests the following:

Read Reading is the single most important thing a parent can do with children. To prepare kids for her class, Garon suggests parents ask questions while reading. “Ask your child, ‘What do you think happens next?’ Give them time and space to answer. Parents jump in too fast,” says Garon. Let them imagine, help them understand the story timeline and instill a belief that their opinions count.

Interact “Singing the alphabet song is a waste of time,” Garon says. Children need to recognize letters in and out of sequence. More importantly, they need to recognize the sound each letter makes, which enhances reading ability and sounding out complex words with multiple syllables. “Teach lowercase letters, too,” Garon adds, “because 85 percent of the letters we read are

lowercase.” Many toys and visual aids only feature uppercase letters. Colors and shapes are best learned contextually. Consider asking children to name items that are round or shaped like a circle, rather than asking them to identify a two-dimensional line image of the shape. Ask children to name all the green items they can think of instead of showing them a leaf and asking them what color it is. When it comes to number sense, understanding that 10 objects signify a group of 10 is more important than how high a child can count. As with letters, understanding numbers out of sequence is important. Garon says a child who understands that seven comes before eight, and that four objects equal the number four, is further ahead than a child who can simply count to 50 from rote memorization.

Practice Kindergarteners need to know how to safely handle a pencil sharpener, scissors, pencil and crayons. Have children practice cutting with safety scissors, play with mega blocks and dig tiny toys out of Play-Doh. These activities help build finger strength and hand coordination required for most kindergarten tasks.

Be Prepared “Have you talked about emergency plans at home?” Garon asks. If not, it’s time. The first week of school is usually about safety and physical boundaries, and children participate in a fire drill. Kindergarteners often line up over and over during the first week to get familiar with school grounds so they know where to go if they become disoriented or lost. “Children should know their full name, birthday and ideally, their phone number,” says Garon, “so they can seek help in an emergency if the most commonly recognized adult is out of sight.”

Road Schooling is a way to educate children “on the road” — a trend for adventurous families who love travel. But a yearlong commitment isn’t required to expose kids to the benefits of hands-on learning.

It turns out the travel bug doesn’t stop biting when we become parents. How far would you go to scratch the itch? In 2015, Suzanne and Mitch Rutledge left their jobs to spend a year traveling the world with their secondgrader. With the support of his school and help from the Internet, the family gave Luke an incredible education on the move—and it wasn’t as challenging as they expected! Suzanne, who wrote a book about the experience (see inset), says learning opportunities came organically when the family pursued activities they all found interesting. From volunteering with elephants in Thailand to nature hikes in New Zealand, they had a blast making the world their classroom. “It means a lot more if you’re doing things hands-on, and seeing things in real life, than if you’re reading things in a book,” says Rutledge. If a trip around the world isn’t in the cards for your family, Rutledge recommends walking tours, cooking classes and museums. She says her family’s greatest takeaway from their trip was to slow down and interact with people they met along the way. “The relationships we built while moving slowly were the most meaningful to us,” says Rutledge.

“Education is not just learning things and seeing things, it’s investing in those relationships.” If you’re ready to take your child’s education “on the road,” check out a few of southern California’s best spots for experiential learning. These culture and history field trips can be done in a day or over a weekend.
