Our San Diego
Publisher’s Letter
Families
Welcome to 2017 In January we usually think about New Year’s resolutions, health and our busy lives. How is your family’s general attitude? I’m sure you have noticed when your kids pick up your attitude. If you feel grumpy, do your kids feel grumpy also? Think positive and the sun will shine on you and your family. When you are around positive people, how does it make you feel? They see the bright side of issues, making you feel good. Read about how to improve your attitude on page 18. When you are on the computer for several hours, do your eyes feel strained? You may have found that you need to wear glasses because of it. Your children are on laptops for several hours at school, then come home to play video games (or do homework) on the computer. Think about how their eyes will be when they are your age! Find help by reviewing the article about Computer Vision Syndrome on page 20. We received some rain in late November and are hoping more is on the way. When it rains in San Diego County this time of year, the mountains usually get snow. Skiing and snow boarding is so much fun! On page 44 you can read about Mammoth Mountain—places to ski and things to do. See the sidebar for gear rental information and tips. Check out our Health, Wellness and Fitness listing starting on page 24. Please support these advertisers. They help us provide Family Magazine at no cost to you. We are thankful to our readers and advertisers. Have a great 2017—let’s make this a great year!

NEW YEAR, NEW ATTITUDE
Find More Joy in 2017 Want to bring more joy into your
home this year? Try shifting your mindset. Not only can adopting a more optimistic attitude create a happier life, you’ll influence how well your kids respond to life’s daily challenges, too. “Children watch their parents. They pick up on moods and beliefs. A positive attitude is contagious— as is a negative attitude,” says Dr. Kristen Hensley, a family psychologist specializing in positive psychology. Positively rewarding. A positive outlook boosts productivity, energy and motivation; helps reduce stress; enhances confidence and self-esteem; benefits health and even improves relationships with others. “A positive attitude can also help us be more flexible in our thinking and make seeing solutions to problems easier,” Hensley says. “Looking for silver linings in life can help build mental resilience and general optimism.”
18 • SanDiegofamily.com • January 2017
Practice self-awareness. Try tracking your moods to get a sense of what you need to better care for yourself each day. Jessica Mostaffa, early childhood mental health specialist and therapist who works with mothers suffering from depression, says this tactic helps her clients take a more mindful approach to their day-to-day emotional wellbeing. Make a happiness list. Brainstorm a list of activities that help you feel better when you’re feeling depleted. Your list might include taking a warm shower, watching a comedy, gardening or taking a walk with a friend. “When moms start working on increasing time for themselves, it not
only decreases depressive symptoms, but they also report having a better, more positive relationship and interactions with their children, partners and others in the home,” Mostaffa says. Invite the kids to make lists, too. When they’re angry or upset, they can turn to their list to help manage emotions in a healthy way. Reframe negative thoughts. Rather than trying to ignore them, work with cynical thoughts that creep into your head. Mostaffa suggests asking yourself grounding questions like: What’s the evidence that thought is (or is not) true? What’s the worst thing that could
happen? What’s the best thing that could happen? And what’s most likely thing to happen? Watch how you say it. Notice how you describe your obligations to others. For instance instead of saying: “It’s my responsibility to make sure the kids have their homework done,” you might say, “It’s my privilege to make sure that my children are doing what’s best for them.” “It’s those subtle shifts that have profound effects on our lives,” says Carla McClellan, a certified life coach. Voice gratitude. Foster positive thinking by inviting your family to share three things for which they feel grateful and why. Bedtime is a good time to reflect on the day. “Daily affirmations can be powerful,” Hensley says. “These don’t have to be major things. A 5-year-old might say she’s grateful for the cupcake she got at school because it made her happy. The purpose is to teach this kind of thinking and help it become a more natural part of everyday life.” Create a vision board. What would your family like to accomplish in the year ahead? Make a family vision board or have each person make individual ones. Grab a stack of old magazines,
scissors, glue and poster board. Cut out inspiring words, quotes and pictures. Ask each other questions like, What are our dreams for the coming year? What do we want to see happen in our lives? What would an ideal vacation look like? Encourage quiet time. Quiet, unplugged time helps nurture creative thinking, problem solving and stress reduction. Read together as a family, draw or watch a show before bedtime. The time together helps kids decompress and gives space to express worries, concerns or stories from the day. Weigh the positive and negative. If your child is troubled by something, encourage him to write down a positive thought about it on a card. On the opposite side, have him write the negative thought. “Then you can discuss with your child each side, how each makes him or her feel, and what the consequences of each side might be,” Hensley says. “Remind children that it’s OK to have negative thoughts and feelings. We just don’t want them to rule our lives.” Play together. Experts agree, families who play together tend to be happier and more deeply connected. Whether
you throw the football, compete in a game of cards, dance in your living room, or make up games on a car ride, play will strengthen your relationship with each other. Experiment with what works for your family. “All of these activities and rituals are very important because they’re modeling a positive attitude, building a healthy way of thinking and interacting with the world, and helping children understand the link between thoughts, feelings and behaviors,” Hensley says. v
Need more help? Depression is a serious illness. How Digital Devices Affect Eyes What to know about Computer Vision Syndrome
Does your technology-fixated child
ever complain of dry, irritated eyes? What about blurry vision, headaches, light sensitivity, neck and shoulder pain, or fatigue? You might look to his electronic devices as potential culprits for these increasingly common, eyerelated ailments. Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), or digital eye strain, describes a group of eye and vision-related problems that result from prolonged computer, tablet, e-reader and cell phone use. Typically, individuals who spend two hours or more in front of digital screens are most susceptible. According to the Vision Council, 90 percent of adults in the United States—and 65 percent of children and teens—fall into this category. Read on to discover what can be done to protect kids (and adults) from the discomforts of digital eye strain. Schedule an eye exam. Uncorrected vision issues are major contributors to CVS. These can be diagnosed through a complete, professional eye examination. An exam should include a discussion of any applicable symptoms and details about your child’s digital device usage.
20 • SanDiegofamily.com • January 2017
An optometrist or ophthalmologist will take measurements to determine how much vision is affected, how the eyes focus and whether lens correction would be beneficial. “Our eyes were designed to be flexible and look from far away to up close, back and forth all day long,” explains Aaron Werner, O.D., of Werner Optometry in El Cajon. “However, when we use digital devices we maintain our focus at a close distance for a long period of time, even hours, without allowing our focus to shift. This prolonged focus effort, combined with the glare and shortwavelength light from digital screens, causes problems.”
headaches after playing video games or being on their tablets watching movies.” Tam suggests that families follow recommended screen time usage guidelines to help prevent these problems. Recently updated guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommend no screen time at all for kids under 18 months (except video chatting); parent/child co-viewing only for 18-24 months; no more than one hour per day for kids ages 2-5 years; and to set limits for kids 6 years and up.
Reduce screen time. Kids these days rely on digital devices for everything from relaxation and social interaction to completing essential schoolwork; but the connection between screen time usage and CVS symptoms is clear.
To set appropriate limits for older kids and teens, the development of a family media plan can help balance the realities of the modern digital world with factors such as school and homework, exercise, sleep and family values. For help creating your family’s personalized plan, visit www .healthychildren.org/English/media.
“The level of discomfort appears to increase with the amount of digital screen use,” says Jennifer Tam, O.D., of Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group. “I am seeing a rise in kids coming in complaining of blurred vision or
Take frequent breaks (and blinks). Both Werner and Tam suggest taking regular screen breaks by following the 20-20-20-rule. This means take a 20-second break, every 20 minutes, to view something 20 feet away.
It seems simple enough, but Werner observes, “Most children and adults look at a screen for nearly 60 minutes before giving their eyes a break.”
Whole health for the whole family!
Also, don’t forget to blink. “To minimize the chances of developing dry eye when using a computer or digital device, make an effort to blink frequently. Blinking keeps the front surface of the eye moist,” Werner explains.

Establish proper positioning and lighting. The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends that computer screens be 4 to 5 inches below eye level, 20 to 28 inches away from the eyes. Tam suggests kids center other digital devices and position 4 to 5 inches below eye level, 18 to 26 inches away. “An LCD screen is much easier on the eyes and typically has an anti-reflective surface to help reduce glare issues. Also choose a high-resolution screen to obtain sharper images,” Tam says. “Brightness should be adjusted so that it is the same illumination as your surroundings. If possible, reduce your color temperature. Blue light is a short-wavelength visible light that is more associated with visual strain than longer wavelengths, such as orange or red.” Increase font size as necessary, position the screen to avoid glare from overhead lights and windows and use lower-wattage bulbs and/or adjustable dimmer switches. Consider task-specific glasses. “Just like your child would not wear their soccer uniform and cleats to dance class, your eyes may need specific glasses to help when working for longer periods on digital devices,” Werner says. “Having ‘computer glasses’ that focus at this distance give your eyes a break from doing the work.” Specialty lenses can also block a screen’s short wavelength light and glare. By implementing proper eye care strategies now, the whole family will soon see a clear, comfortable future. v Lisa Pawlak is an award-winning contributing writer and Encinitas resident.

Healthy Habits
for a New Year...
by Dr. Regina Mangine, MD, FAAP
Another New Year brings a wonderful opportunity for some New Year’s Resolutions for 2017! Many people make grand plans to
The AAP also recommends an hour of activity per day for kids. This can be a challenging goal to meet during the week, with school, homework, and activities often taking up all of their waking hours. If you can find little ways to add a few steps to the day as a family, it may help
join a gym and go everyday, give up whole food groups, or vow to lose 20 pounds. It’s much easier to stick with little changes, and, by getting your kids involved, you can help improve every one’s New Year. Rather than beginning a drastic diet, how about a small change to your eating habits?
The American Academy of Pediatrics
recommends that children get five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Are your family members meeting this goal? Sneaking in extras might mean a banana with cereal, fruit on your yogurt, a tangerine in the lunchbox and an extra vegetable option with dinner. (Smoothies are another great option, but skip drinking juice, as most are loaded with sugar.) Many families make healthy changes in their diet by adopting Meatless Mondays or by cutting back on eating out. You might also try getting your kids involved in growing their food, as kids who’ve invested their time in growing the vegetable, are much more likely to try it -- and like it! One simple change that makes a big and lasting impact is simply committing to eating together as a family. No matter what’s on the menu, a family dinner is wonderful for your child’s mental and emotional health!
everyone become more physically fit and healthy. If you live within walking distance of your kids’ school, try leaving the house a few minutes early one or two days a week and take them for a walk. A little activity in the morning will jumpstart your metabolism and helps your kids focus on the day ahead. If the afternoon is more flexible, maybe a short trip to the local park to blow off some steam before diving into homework would work better. If all else fails, crank your kids’ favorite music and have a dance party while dinner is in the oven!
provide hours of entertainment and quality family time together. Consider a family membership to your local YMCA or an allages yoga class if you’d rather be indoors.
After all that activity, prioritize adequate
sleep for everyone in the family! Make bedtime a set time every day of the week to make sure the whole family is rested. If your kids stay up much later on the weekends than they do during the week, the first few days of the week may be spent trying to catch up on sleep. By keeping a set bedtime, you can guarantee everyone -- including Mom and Dad -- gets the rest they need. Lastly, don’t forget to think about your family’s wellness checks at the doctor’s office. Look ahead to upcoming days off -- President’s Day, Spring Break, etc. -- and call your doctor’s office as soon as possible to snag an appointment on those prime days to avoid missing school! And it’s not too late for the family to get flu shots to prevent Influenza. The flu season is just gearing up, and providing that extra protection for your busy family is just what the doctor ordered.
With some small changes and a little extra effort, by the end of 2017, your whole family could be healthier -- and happier!
On the weekends, families can get plenty
of exercise while taking advantage of the beautiful weather and scenery San Diego has to offer. A bike ride around Mission Bay, a walk in Oak Canyon (in Mission Trails), or a hike up Cowles Mountain can

Canyon Rim Children's Center “Dedicated to the individuality of children.”
Canyon Rim Children’s Center (CRCC) has been providing high quality, enrichment, preschool programs for San Diego children since 1998. We are a full day, year round, enrichment program. Our learning philosophy is based on developmentally appropriate practices inspired by the schools in Reggio Emilia, Italy. Our developmental, play-based, preschool serves children ages two through six.
At CRCC, we strive to maintain child to teacher ratios lower than those required by the State of California. Our teachers’ educational credentials exceed those as specified by the State. Our professional staff creates a safe and caring environment where the emphasis is on learning through play. As Fred Rogers, a.k.a., “Mr. Rogers” said, “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.” We recognize each child is a unique person with individual rates of growth. Our goal is to meet each child’s

emotional, social, cognitive and physical needs in a relaxed, loving environment, free from personal criticism and excessive competition. Activities in art, music, math, language, science, dramatic play, fine and gross motor development are fashioned to facilitate transition from one developmental stage to the next. Our teachers also use our wellequipped, natural playgrounds to support exploration and promote physical development. Natural outdoor spaces enhance curiosity & encourage children to develop an appreciation and awareness of nature. At CRCC, children develop the skills of observation, inquiry, concentration, problem solving, and self-reliance. Our structured, yet open-ended program prepares each child to utilize his or her intellectual and creative abilities in future learning tasks. Here we work to give each child the tools and the foundation on which to build a lifetime of learning. Kindergarten teachers love our CRCC children!

DOING DOUBLE TIME 29 ways to workout with kids in tow I used to feel trapped by parenting. My kids were
wrapped around my ankles 24/7 and it put a serious cramp in my fitness routine. In the good old days, I would jog on my lunch hour or right after work. When I switched careers to parenting, things became complicated. There were no breaks and the shifts were 20 years long. I hardly recognized the wasteland that had once been my body and brain. Something had to give. That something had to be affordable on my salary of zero—and require less than the zero minutes I had available for me time. That ruled out joining a gym and getting a personal trainer. I made up my mind to get moving or die trying. I started taking my oldest to preschool in the jogging stroller. I saved my shower until her baby sister and I were back home, and she went down for a nap. This small change paid off: our hellish “get out the door” routine got simpler and my morning dread got smaller. When things are running at the speed of family, it feels like there is no room to breathe. But there are nooks and crannies in your life that can be transformed into healthy release. Here’s a list of parenting jobs that can be turned into workouts. Find your magical formula. Those little doses of oxygen and sweat will bring precious relief—and your whole world will feel better.
Travel Time • Walk, jog or bike to nearby errands. • Take a self-propelled trip to the library, bank, store, school or kids’ classes.
Playground Time • Schedule a walking playdate at the park or zoo. • Play tag.
30 • SanDiegofamily.com • January 2017
• Play follow the leader. • Run up a hill and roll back down. • Pull kids (or your diaper/snack/toy gear) in a wagon. • Swing or do pullups on the monkey bars. • Use a stair or bench for step-ups or inclined push-ups.
Indoor Play • Give piggyback and pony rides. • Drag the kids across the floor on a blanket. • Have an animal walk race. Move like a bear, crab, frog, snake or spider. • Create an obstacle course with whatever you’ve got: jump rope, hoppityball, books (jump over), tables (crawl under) and the stairs. • Challenge the kids to balancing contests in various yoga poses. • Do lunges and animal walks up and down the hall until a timer goes off.
Kids’ Downtime
Start the year off with Art!
• Use the treadmill or elliptical during the kids’ screen time.
JOIN LITTLE FISH IN THEIR NEW LOCATION FOR CLASSES, MEET-UPS AND SPECIAL WORKSHOPS 6822B El Cajon Blvd.
• Find a workout video on YouTube while the kids are napping. • Strengthen with weights or plyometrics as soon as the kids are in bed. • Do yoga or slip out for a walk before the family wakes up.
Family Time

• Take a family walk or bike ride after dinner. • Get up and move every 30 minutes of screen time. • Do homework, paperwork, or chores to music, standing at the counter. Wiggle frequently and take a dance break every fifth song.
Extracurricular Time • Enroll the kids in sports that offer concurrent classes for parents. • Go for a walk or run during the kids’ music lessons or homework time.
Soothing Baby • Wear your baby for a brisk walk. • When baby is in your arms, pull down your shoulders and draw in your abs. Hold as long as possible. • Do bent-over rows with baby in her car seat. • Every time you pick up baby or put her down, do three controlled squats.
Manufacture Me Time • Join a gym that offers babysitting (bonus points if it also has a sauna or jacuzzi). If all else fails, just shuffle around the house dragging the little ones on your legs for resistance. They may be exhausting, but they make decent ankle weights. v Laurie Zottmann is a mom writer who likes her jogging stroller, but prefers to exercise out of sight and earshot of her talking ankle weights. ASTHMA SUPERFOODS If you have asthma, keeping
an emergency inhaler and other treatments on hand can help quickly relieve symptoms so you can breathe easier. But there is evidence that foods containing certain compounds may reduce asthma symptoms. These asthma “superfoods” contain nutrients and minerals—beta-carotene, flavonoids, magnesium, potassium, selenium, vitamin C and vitamin E— which may reduce lung inflammation or swelling that can lead to asthma. “Many of these foods are what you’d find in a healthy diet,” says Kaveh Bagheri, MD, FACP, FCCP, pulmonary medicine specialist affiliated with Sharp Grossmont Hospital. “So for people living with asthma—or anyone in general—maintaining a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables may help lessen asthma symptoms.” Here are five asthma superfoods:
Carrots Known for protecting eyes, carrots are also good for lungs. A study surveying more than 68,000 women—of whom approximately 2,100 reported having asthma—found that those who had a higher consumption of carrots had a 20 percent lower risk of asthma compared to those who did not eat carrots often. The key may be beta-carotene, another antioxidant that may help in combating free radicals. Choose carrots that are darker and deeper in color because they tend to pack more beta-carotene.
32 • SanDiegofamily.com • January 2017
Other asthma superfoods rich in beta-carotene include sweet potatoes, kale and mustard greens.
Avocados Antioxidants have many health benefits, such as protecting cells against damage from unstable molecules known as free radicals. In the case of asthma, free radicals can cause airway smooth muscles to tighten, leading to asthma. Avocados are rich in antioxidants, particularly vitamin E and glutathione. Glutathione is an important antioxidant because it has been shown to protect cells against free-radical damage and detoxify foreign pollutants in the body.
Apples The saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” may ring true for asthmatics. A study found that after surveying more than 1,400 participants ages 16–50, apple consumption had a protective effect against asthma. The effect could be due to the high concentration of flavonoids in apples, which are known to possess strong antiinflammatory properties.
Flaxseeds Flaxseeds contain many elements, such as potassium, magnesium and selenium, which can potentially reduce asthma symptoms by relaxing airway muscles in the lungs. Flaxseeds are
also high in omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to have anti-inflammatory properties. Not sure how to consume flaxseeds? It’s best to grind them (using a coffee grinder) and sprinkle over cereal or yogurt. Other asthma superfoods rich in potassium, magnesium and selenium include spinach, buckwheat and sunflower seeds.
Garlic Garlic has long been touted for its healing properties. Compounds naturally found in garlic, such as vitamin C, are thought to reduce asthma symptoms. Vitamin C can help combat free-radical damage. Research suggests that vitamin C found in garlic and other foods may have an antihistamine effect, thereby reducing the allergic reaction and inflammation of airways. Lastly, garlic can help the body make prostacyclins, which are fat molecules that help keep airway passages open. Other asthma superfoods rich in vitamin C include citrus fruits, endives and kiwi. v Information provided by the San Diego Sharp Health News Team. For more health stories visit www.sharp.com/ news. Mini Home Makeovers If the new year has you thinking
about a new, updated living space, it may be time for a home makeover. But budget or timing may not allow all the changes you’d like to make. Here are ideas to give your house a mini makeover without breaking the bank. Clean up clutter. You’re less likely to hang out in a room with toys, magazines or shoes all over the place. Purchase decorative bins for items you need to have close by and plastic storage boxes for things that can go in closets and under the bed. Check out dollar stores, Ikea and Walmart for budgetfriendly options. Make the most of closet space. Double the space in your closet by adding a second bar and shelf combination. It will maximize the space, giving you
36 • SanDiegofamily.com • January 2017
two rows to hang clothes instead of one. Further organize the space by adding a shoe rack, tie bar and belt hooks. Purchase small drawers for things like scarves, jewelry and other small items. Bring in more light. By moving window treatments higher on the wall and exposing more of the window, the room looks bigger, brighter and is more pleasant to be in on a sunny day. Add lamps or simply change light bulbs to add more light in the evening hours. Paint. Paint is the best bang for your makeover buck. A gallon of paint costs $50 or less, and if you do the painting yourself, you’ll save labor costs. If the project seems too big, why not have a painting party and pay your laborers with pizza and beer?
Give the doors a new ‘do. Update the doors inside the house by changing doorknobs, adding trim to flat doors or giving doors a pop of contrasting color. Liven up baseboards. If you have white baseboards in a house with children and pets, they start to look beat up within a few years. Give them a good cleaning with soap and water. If they are beyond that stage, try a fresh coat of paint or a decorative piece of trim for a simple DIY project. Hit the thrift stores. Thrift stores and garage sales are full of high quality furniture and décor that may be out of style. DIYers can give those items a fresh, shabby chic look with a fresh coat of paint (try chalk paint!). Keep your eyes out for gently used frames, vases and wall hangings, too.
Need a new look in less than 24 hours? Here are five quick fixes. 1. Fresh flowers. Stop by the florist or cut fresh flowers from your garden to display in simple vases. 2. Give the room a once over. Move clutter out of the room temporarily, if necessary. Rearrange furniture that may make the room seem too small. 3. Cover obvious errors. Flip over couch cushions, use a throw to cover a small rip, move a rug or furniture to cover a stain on the floor. 4. Let in light. Draw back curtains and open windows. If you are entertaining at night, light decorative candles to give off a soft glow. 5. Move things around. Take decorative things from around the house and display them in the room your guests will be in.

Update a room. If shopping for second hand items isn’t your thing, update a room with new pillows, frames, plants or prints. This simple splash of color does not need to be expensive. Check out Target, TJ Maxx and Home Goods for great decorative items at reasonable prices. Replace dated light fixtures and faucets. Handymen (or women) can make a big difference with new lighting and plumbing in bathrooms and kitchens. Take down eyesore chandeliers and replace plumbing fixtures that are out of date. Rooms will feel new again and lighting will give the room a new focal point. v Pam Molnar is a freelance writer and mother of three. We’re fortunate to have so many educational options for children in San Diego. Matching your child’s learning style to the right school has many benefits. Here are some of the local administrators who can help determine which educational environment works for your family.
Clark Gilbert, Superintendent
Our students are difference makers and that is modeled and inspired by our teachers. We enjoy serving our community and we do it in a variety of ways. Children learn by doing and serving others is no different. Our goal is that when our students walk out of our doors into the community, they will have a heart to serve.
Suzanne Catanzaro, Principal
Every morning Mrs. Catanzaro is the first face the children see – and she warmly greets them by name. She has established a safe, positive learning environment where each student is respected as a unique individual. She leads her staff in an educational process that is genuinely responsive to each child’s ever-changing needs.
Miss Nancy founded Renaissance Village Academy with a passion to create a safe space for quirky, curious, gifted children to learn in, at intellectually appropriate levels not limited by a student’s age. Her family has been focused on gifted education for three generations. After 20 years in the public schools, she designed RVA to meet both the academic and social / emotional needs of students who think outside the quadrilateral parallelogram.

This season, watch your little
rippers “shred some pow” at one of California’s premiere winter sports recreational resorts, Mammoth Mountain. Families envisioning a fun, wintery escape will fulfill mammothsized dreams at this snowy paradise. While Mammoth is best known for world-class skiing and snowboarding, the town offers a full range of activities, both on and off the slopes. “We have a very laid back vibe,” says Lara Kaylor, of Mammoth Lakes Tourism. “We also have the best snow and longest ski season of all the California resorts.” From skiing, snowboarding and snow play to tubing, scenic gondola rides and snowmobile tours, the entire family will love creating lasting memories in this winter wonderland.
The When and Where Mammoth is located in the eastern Sierras, approximately 400 miles from San Diego. The winter sports season extends from November through June and boasts a summit of 11,053 feet, an average of 400 inches of annual snowfall, and clear blue skies for more than 300 days each year.

Mammoth is a relatively straightforward drive from San Diego, though chains are required at times. If you prefer to fly, Alaska Air operates a direct flight from San Diego to Mammoth Yosemite Airport. Once in the town of Mammoth Lakes, a free shuttle service is available. Peak times include Christmas through New Year’s and winter holiday weekends. A great time to go is midweek in January when there are fewer crowds, lots of snow and good deals. Mammoth’s nearby sister resort, June Mountain, is generally quieter and offers free lift passes to kids 12 and under. Because Mammoth’s base elevation is over 9,000 feet, individuals sensitive to altitude related illness should take appropriate precautions.
Skiing and Snowboarding The mountain’s skiing and snowboarding terrain includes a 3,100 ft. vertical rise, 3,500 acres, 28 lifts and 150 named trails. It is rated 25 percent beginner, 40 percent intermediate, 20 percent advanced and 15 percent expert. Mammoth’s Ski and Snowboard School offers group and private lessons. Beginner youth packages include instruction, gear rentals and lunch. Arrive at the slopes early to coordinate
When deciding where to rent ski/ snowboard gear, consider daily expense, personal tolerance for crowds and overall convenience. Wherever you choose, remember to include helmets! Mammoth’s base lodges. You won’t have to drag gear to/from your lodging and, if there are any issues, they can be addressed onsite; however, you will pay a premium and there may be crowds, which takes extra time. Off-site, Mammoth-based rentals. Typically more competitive pricing and shorter lines. Try The Ski Renter (online reservations available: www .SkiRenterMammoth.com). A premium delivery service, such as Black Tie Ski Rentals. Delivers gear directly to Mammoth accommodations and if there are any problems during the day, meet you slope-side to fix them. It’s a great option for families who need a little extra time and personal assistance. www.MammothSkis.com Rent in San Diego. Local businesses, such as Hansen’s Surfboards, offer competitive rates and don’t charge for travel days. Advance fittings and reservations are recommended. www.HansenSurf .com/pages/snow-rentals-repair
rentals, tickets and lessons. Lift passes can be purchased and recharged online, so hold onto them for future visits. Kids 4 and under ski/board for free. Consider exploring more than 19 miles of groomed trails at the Tamarack Cross Country ski area. Rent Nordic skis or snowshoes, take a guided tour and experience the serenity of the surrounding natural world.
Kids love Woolly’s Tube Park & Snow Play area, where they can take a lift to the top of six groomed, highspeed tubing runs. Younger ones can build a snowman or ride the snowy “merry-go-round.” Nighttime electric tubing (tubing under lights, with music and glow party favors) is available on select dates.
