Our San Diego

Editor’s Note

Families

Have a Super Summer! The closest I’ve come to engaging in Comic-Con culture is dressing up like Elastigirl from The Incredibles for my daughter’s 18th birthday (it was a superhero costume party). Nevertheless, I can still appreciate the enthusiasm and anticipation of thousands of Comic-Con fans. No tickets to the event? No problem. Our very own Gina Petrone (along with her sons) has been attending Comic-Con events inside and outside the convention center for many years and shares her tips on what to do with kids. Check out Gina’s suggestions on page 24, including how to obtain the most up-to-date Comic-Con news. To add to the fun—or if your kids are too young for the big event— consider a superhero-themed celebration at home. Consult last month’s party planner for ideas, including DIY flower crowns, robot vests and superhero capes: www.sandiegofamily.com/resources/ party-planner. Don’t miss San Diego Family’s autograph signing event with this issue’s cover models, Victoria Ikerd-Schreiter (@ WonderWomanisReal) and her son, Braydyn. See details on page 48. We are excited to announce this year’s Best of Family Fun winners and top picks! Turn to page 16 to discover what YOU chose as the best hotspots, hangouts and good eats for families (find the complete list of winners on our website). Add the winners to your family’s summer fun bucket list. A big shout-out to everyone who took the time to first nominate their faves and then return and vote. We couldn’t do this annual contest without your valuable input and feedback. In fact, read the write-ups to see if you were quoted!

Happy Fourth of July from our Family to yours! Enjoy barbecuing, watching fireworks or just spending time together. However you spend the day, sport custom-made American flag t-shirts (instructions on page 46). Have a super summer! editor@sandiegofamily.com Main Office: 1475 Sixth Avenue, Fifth Floor, San Diego, CA 92101 Mailing Address: P.O. If you could have any superhero power, what would it be and why? Nicole Maggio marketing representative I wish I could fly, so I could surprise my family in the desert whenever I want (imagine how much I would save on gas!) and go snorkeling in Hawaii at a moment’s notice.

Jenny Burman, calendar editor I want the power to be in multiple places at the same time. It would make planning my day and managing my life (working full time, shuttling kids to and from activities, making meals, doing chores, binge-watching TV) much easier!

Adrienne Sigeti editorial assistant I would definitely want the ability to time travel. I love the idea of sitting down with my great-great grandparents or distant relatives to ask about their lives and experiences.

Sharon Bay, publisher My husband, Larry, and I are playing superheroes in Germany and France for a few weeks. Our superhero staff members are always champions and I thank them!

MAKE THE MOST OF COMIC-CON Ph o t o

c ou r te s y of

Al l C

o l o r s Ph o t o g

When I first started going to Comic-Con, I easily parked at the convention center, bought a ticket at the window and walked in. Comic-Con was about comic books, meeting artists and getting goodie bags—long before it became the Hollywood juggernaut it is now.

The Basics Comic-Con began as a single day event in 1970 at the U.S. Grant Hotel with about 100 attendees. Today, it is a four-day event (July 20-23) at the San Diego Convention Center that attracts over 150,000 people from around the world. If you were lucky enough to secure a badge, congratulations! Nearly one million people vie annually for about 55,000 badges. This multi-genre entertainment event covering the latest in movies, television, video games and comics, has outgrown the convention center and spills out into downtown, creating a campus-like atmosphere. It’s like a giant Halloween party with great people-watching opportunities. Some of the biggest buzz this year will be about Thor: Ragnarok, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Bladerunner 2049, The Defenders and more. Visit www.comic-con.org for programming.

Offsite Events With or without a badge, there are plenty of free activities outside of Comic-Con for families to enjoy. The streets are lined with activities and attractions such as South Park and Game of Thrones. Petco Park hosts the Comic-Con Interactive Zone in the Lexus Premier Lot with food trucks, events, a carnival ride, booths and interactive experiences as well as events in Park at the Park. Visit www .petcoparkinsider.com for details. Sadly, Nerd HQ is not taking place this year, but there’s buzz that some of the components will pop-up so check www .nerdhq.com for the latest news. Video games are a large part of the Fan Fest. In the past there have been showrooms for Lego and Disney Infinity featuring exclusive figures and video game demos, a Call of Duty laser tag

attraction, an Assassin’s Creed obstacle course, and a Walking Dead haunted experience. This year Nintendo returns with its Family Gaming Lounge at the Marriott. The best website for all things Comic-Con is www.sdccblog.com. There won’t be a zombie walk this year, but the organizers are promising another “undead” event. If your teens can handle it, visit www.sdzombiewalk .com for the scoop. If the kids are worn out but you still have energy, there are plenty of nighttime events (most require tickets) such as the Game of Thrones Pub Crawl, Funko Fundays, Pirate Con, “Mystery Science Theatre 3000” Live at the Balboa Theatre, Hop-Con 5.0, Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses Concert and even an Underground Lightsaber Fighters Tournament. Some events allow kids. Visit www.outsidecomiccon.com for details.

Giveaways & Promotions You can’t walk very far without somone handing you a poster, comic book, party invitation or other promotional pieces. Over the years we’ve collected t-shirts, ball caps, posters, pins, sunglasses, virtual reality viewers, buttons and other trinkets. Street teams run around promoting shows like Outlander, featuring shirtless men wearing kilts and women playing bagpipes.

Look for Celebrities Robert Downey Jr. once donned an Iron Man mask and walked unnoticed through the crowds and Benedict Cumberbatch greeted fans waiting in line for Hall H after midnight. Last year we saw Seth Rogen being interviewed on a balcony at the Hard Rock Hotel and took selfies with the cast from Agents of Shield. You never know who is inside that Spiderman costume or black SUV!

10 Tips for Tackling Comic-Con with Kids Go early; Leave early. Comic-Con attracts a predominantly late-night party crowd so early morning is a great time to explore with kids. Take the trolley. Parking downtown is nearly impossible (and expensive). Avoid stress by taking the trolley (or get dropped off). Use sunscreen. There is a lot of waiting in line, so be sure to apply sunscreen and wear a hat. Pack snacks. While there are plenty of restaurants downtown, most have long lines so bring snacks to tide you over. Bring a backpack. To carry all the free promotional swag! Go in costume. Cosplay (costume play) is a great way to feel part of the community. Focus on comfort. Zombie makeup is an easy costume. Take photos. Most costumed characters are happy to pose for photos with kids, which make great mementos. Pick a meeting place. With such heavy crowds, designate a safe meeting place in case you get separated. Pace yourself. Sunday is typically quieter and may be more suitable for kids’ tolerance levels. Monitor media. Many activities aren’t announced until July. Visit www.sdccblog .com for the latest news.

Photos courtesy of sandiego.org except where noted

Be Prepared Comic-Con is an electrifying and amazing experience. It’s also hot and crowded—with lots of waiting and few places to sit and rest. Plan some downtime, such as walking a few blocks away to a less crowded restaurant or heading to Embarcadero Marina Park behind the convention center to sit under a tree. Think twice before taking toddlers or children who don’t do well in large crowds— it’s not for the faint-hearted. For older kids, Comic-Con is something they’ll always remember! v Gina Petrone is a local writer with two teenage boys who were dutifully raised on Harry Potter, Star Wars and all things Marvel. Photos used with permission from the author.

Outdoor Art Projects for Kids

Your child has mastered the art of the easel and used up all the sidewalk chalk.

Find mosaic kits at craft stores to design garden stepping stones. They come in different shapes and sizes and can even capture little hand or footprints. Shop around and read reviews before buying—some brands are more successful than others.

Looking for new ways to inspire his inner Picasso? Creative souls love outdoor adventures, so why not make art outside? These ideas will inspire budding and experienced artists alike and require minimal investment and supplies.

Garden Art

Toddlers and preschoolers love to finger paint, so why not have them paint with their feet! This idea from blogger Asia Citro of Fun at Home with Kids is a hoot and has a short supply list: a long piece of butcher paper and washable paint. Kids will squeal with delight as they stomp through puddles of paint and make tracks on paper. Be ready with a hose and damp rags for cleanup. Love this activity? Check out Citro’s book A Little Bit of Dirt: 55+ Science and Art Activities to Reconnect Children with Nature for creative ideas to fill the summer with fun and learning (available on Amazon).

Encourage kids to make art that adds whimsy to the outdoors. Using acrylics that won’t wash off, paint rocks in bright colors or as ladybugs and bumblebees and scatter in your backyard. Or, hide in public parks for others to find. This fun movement is taking the world by storm. Learn more on the Santee Rocks Facebook page about what locals are doing. Want to get the kids more involved in gardening? Start with a fairy garden. Laura Falin offers suggestions to create a basic fairy garden on her blog Peace but Not Quiet. As your child takes care of the garden, her imagination is sure to sprout with creative ways to add enchanting details.

Messy play is much-needed sensory play. Get more fun ideas for kids of all ages in “Let Your Kids Get Messy” at www.sandiegofamily.com/resources/parenting/2024.

Tic-tac-toe is a timeless game for grandparents and toddlers alike. Carlsbad resident and blogger Sam Sarles of Color Made Happy, transforms rocks into a game of tic-tac-toe that lasts all summer. All that’s needed is a tile, a piece of chalk and round rocks painted with colorful Xs and Os.

Photos courtesy of

Surprise little artists by painting in the kiddie pool! Jean Van’t Hul, blogger at The Artful Parent, suggests using a kiddie pool as an easel of sorts. Line the pool with large sheets of butcher paper, add squirts of paint and let kids roll balls around to make colorful abstract art, great for decorating the playroom. It’s officially summertime when kids are gleefully blowing bubbles. Transform an afternoon of backyard bubble-blowing into a magical painting experience by using bubbles to create beautiful art. Blogger Erika Bragdon gives directions on her site, Living Well Mom, to help spread creative joy.

Create a vignette of rock people to greet visitors in your front or backyard. Use a paint pen to add eyes and other personalized details to rocks. Then stack them in such a way that they look like people and line them up in the yard. continued–

Have a beach art day. Go on a nature walk and collect shells, kelp, rocks and sticks in a bucket; then create a unique mosaic or word art from found objects. Take a photo of your child’s creations for his nature journal. Create sun prints in minutes. First, buy a sun print kit, available at art supply stores or online. Have kids collect natural objects with interesting textures, such as leaves, flowers or seashells. Arrange objects, put in the sun for few minutes, then run under water to set, which creates a lovely white silhouette on a blue background. Be sure to follow the kit’s directions carefully. v

Hunt for stars with Sky View, a cool app that’s free on App Store. Simply open the app and point at the night sky to easily find stars and identify constellations. Fun when camping in the backyard or in the mountains.

Scavenger hunts keep boredom at bay

Tired of kids complaining that there’s nothing to do? Shoo away boredom by going on a scavenger hunt—an easy way to add fun to an ordinary day! Add some of these scavenger hunts to your family’s summer bucket list.

DIY Hunts Use scavenger hunts as teaching tools. Have kids hunt for 10 objects beginning with a designated letter of the alphabet or that are a certain shape. Help kids get to know the library by finding books by authors whose names begin with the same letter as their own. Go on a flag hunt. Find out how many different types of flags your neighbors display. Or count the number of American flags as you stroll neighborhood streets. Use the five senses when taking a sensory walk. For a touch walk, look for natural objects that are soft, rough, smooth, sticky, wet or fuzzy. Take a listening walk—listen for birds singing, kids laughing, a horn blowing, etc.

30 • SanDiegofamily.com • July 2017

Geocaching Geocaching is a fun scavenger hunt for real treasure. Using GPS, track down boxes hidden in local spots— maybe in a park or along a trail. Log your findings, collect treasure, and leave behind treasure for the next hunters. Use the highly rated Cachly app to find hundreds of geocaches near you.

Local, Organized Scavenger Hunts Hunt for animals. Visit Mission Trails Regional Park or your neighborhood park to look for animals. Try to find birds, insects, ducks, dogs and butterflies. Or, discover camels, ostriches, zebras, horses and more at the Children’s Nature Retreat in Alpine! Search for all the colors of the rainbow while walking through your neighborhood and have kids take photos of each color they find. Or, search for decorative rocks hidden by neighbors. Visit the Santee Rocks Facebook page to learn more. The app Alien Assignment (free on App Store) is an easy problem-solving game that gets kids off the couch. “Aliens” ask participants to search for objects that are flat, heavy, clear, etc. Kids photograph items they find, then ask an adult to check their answers. Great fun for families with preschoolers. Even errands become an adventure with the twist of a scavenger hunt. The SnapQuest app (free on App Store) is similar to Alien Assignment, but allows participants to specify a grocery

Murder n’ Mayhem offers fun scavenger hunts for different age groups. Bring smart phones to collect virtual clues. Take a one-hour pirate-themed Adventure Hunt through Seaport Village where a costumed tour guide leads the group (ages 5 & up) on a fun trek. Dress as a scallywag for ultimate fun! $15/person Solve a murder mystery on a Who Dunnit? Seaport Village adventure. This two-hour “tour” is recommended for ages 10+ due to difficulty level (no scary or gory material). $25/person Visit www.murdernmayhem.com/ mysteryparties/tours for details. Unplug with San Elijo Lagoon’s 30x30 Nature Challenge: spend 30 minutes per day for 30 days experiencing nature in different ways. Complete tasks such as walk the dog, count animals, watch a sunrise or pick up trash on the beach. Learn more at www.sanelijo.org/30x30.

Road Trip 6 family-friendly stops along the Central Coast

Perhaps you’re thinking, “San Diego is amazing. Why would we leave our beautiful city to simply drive up the coast?” Valid question, but the secret is out about San Diego—it’s a top U.S. vacation destination! So while the rest of the country is descending upon us this summer, consider venturing away from the crowds for a few days. A road trip to California’s Central Coast offers tons of fun for families and has plenty of space to venture, roam and discover. Add these stops to your road trip plans.

Just half a mile off Hwy. 101 (Avila Beach Dr. exit) is Avila Valley Barn, a fun-filled stop featuring farm animals, an ice cream shop with gourmet treats, and a country barn filled with home-baked goods, fresh produce, and specialty items. There is no entry fee to visit with animals, which include goats, pigs, miniature horses, sheep, alpaca, chickens and donkeys. Kids can even pet and feed some of them. Hot corn on the cob is available right from the corn roaster. On weekends, kids love tractor and pony rides for a nominal fee. Check the schedule for seasonal u-pick opportunities on the farm. www.avilavalleybarn.com

Eat Have breakfast at Waypoint Café at Camarillo Airport. Sit outside to watch planes land and take off while enjoying Cinnamon Roll French Toast (or indulge in a delicious shake at lunch). Kids love exploring the miniature airport off the patio, featuring a replica of the control tower and runway. Visit this local favorite during the week or at off times, or be prepared to wait. www.thewaypointcafe.com

Stay Looking for a relaxing beachside community that’s void of crowds? Stay in Oxnard—it’s awesome. Who knew? I’ve been driving past Oxnard for years, having no idea there were pristine beaches lined with sand dunes, miles of bike and walking paths, fun-filled parks, and farm stands selling local produce just minutes off the freeway. If you only go for the day, be sure to visit Channel Islands Harbor for a peaceful family-friendly kayak tour through Marine Emporium Landing or take a gondola ride through the Harbor’s Seabridge Canals. Rent bikes or surreys and take the path along Hollywood Beach and Mandalay Beach, where you’ll find a huge playground to spend a couple hours. Ride the opposite direction to Channel Islands Maritime Museum at the end of the marina. Find more tips about visiting Oxnard at www.SanDiegoFamily.com/travel/family-travel.

Wine & Dine If you have access to a babysitter, be sure to stop in Ventura for dinner at Rumfish y Vino. The outdoor patio provides ambiance perfect for a date. My husband summed it up pretty well, “I’m not gonna lie. This is some of the best seafood I’ve had.” He was talking about the fish stew. I argued that my sea bass was better: perfectly cooked with coconut rice, bell peppers and charred cherry tomatoes. Regardless of what you eat, get a margarita—they’re on point. www.rumfishyvinoventura.com

Read more about things to do in Ventura at www.sandiegofamily.com/travel/family-travel/1811.

Shop & Explore San Luis Obispo (SLO) is heavenly with tons of gorgeous trees and a rushing creek running through downtown. Follow the San Luis Creek path to explore, then cross the footbridge from Mission Plaza to Higuera Street where there’s great shopping, plenty of comfortable coffee shops and infamous Bubblegum Alley. Head uptown to Monterey Street to grab lunch at SLO Provisions, where you might get lucky to find the rotisserie pork sandwich with lemon herb spread and fennel slaw as a daily special. Either way, there are delicious offerings for everyone in the family. If you happen to visit SLO on a Thursday, stay for the evening farmers market downtown—it’s been a local highlight for more than 30 years! www.visitSLO.com

Make discoveries about sound, light, speed, color, gravity and much more. Our family spent more time than we should have competing at Quiet Quest—a test to see how quietly people can walk through a rock path. Needless to say, I beat my husband and teen daughter at this challenge, but didn’t have as much luck when it came time to test jumping ability. Don’t miss the rooftop Sky Garden where you’ll find an interactive water exhibit, lookout tower and glass sky deck, not to mention a 360-degree view of Santa Barbara. With surprises around every corner, MOXI is an absolute blast! Plan to spend several hours. www.moxi.org v

Use a glue gun to adhere pin back to the back of silk flower. Set aside. Place a piece of cardboard lined with wax paper inside the shirt (this prevents glue from seeping through the shirt). Cut 4-5 strips of rickrack, all the same length. Use fabric glue to adhere rickrack to the shirt in horizontal lines (leave one inch space between each). Let dry completely. Pin flower onto shirt in the upper left corner of rickrack (see photo). v

Is your GATE child bored at school? Are you tired of the homework fight every night? Does your quirky kid struggle to be accepted?

Renaissance Village Academy is a private, non-religious full-time school serving gifted, profoundly gifted, doubly-gifted, and highly motivated children in grades K-8. Our schedule is designed for the working parent (9:15 am -5:15 pm most days), so homework is done with credentialed teachers. Minimum day is Wednesday and every other Friday. ATTENTION PRE-K PARENTS! Is your child “too young” for kindergarten, but ready for school? If she’s at least 4 yrs, 9 mos., consider RVA as an academic alternative for your bright youngster.
