Our very own Gina Petrone (along with her sons) has been attending Comic-Con events inside and outside the convention center for many years and shares her tips on what to do with kids. When I first started going to Comic-Con, I easily parked at the convention center, bought a ticket at the window and walked in. Comic-Con was about comic books, meeting artists and getting goodie bags—long before it became the Hollywood juggernaut it is now.

The Basics Comic-Con began as a single day event in 1970 at the U.S. Grant Hotel with about 100 attendees. Today, it is a four-day event (July 20-23) at the San Diego Convention Center that attracts over 150,000 people from around the world. If you were lucky enough to secure a badge, congratulations! Nearly one million people vie annually for about 55,000 badges. This multi-genre entertainment event covering the latest in movies, television, video games and comics, has outgrown the convention center and spills out into downtown, creating a campus-like atmosphere. It’s like a giant Halloween party with great people-watching opportunities. Some of the biggest buzz this year will be about Thor: Ragnarok, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Bladerunner 2049, The Defenders and more. Visit www.comic-con.org for programming.

Offsite Events With or without a badge, there are plenty of free activities outside of Comic-Con for families to enjoy. The streets are lined with activities and attractions such as South Park and Game of Thrones. Petco Park hosts the Comic-Con Interactive Zone in the Lexus Premier Lot with food trucks, events, a carnival ride, booths and interactive experiences as well as events in Park at the Park. Video games are a large part of the Fan Fest. In the past there have been showrooms for Lego and Disney Infinity featuring exclusive figures and video game demos, a Call of Duty laser tag

attraction, an Assassin’s Creed obstacle course, and a Walking Dead haunted experience. This year Nintendo returns with its Family Gaming Lounge at the Marriott. If the kids are worn out but you still have energy, there are plenty of nighttime events (most require tickets) such as the Game of Thrones Pub Crawl, Funko Fundays, Pirate Con, “Mystery Science Theatre 3000” Live at the Balboa Theatre, Hop-Con 5.0, Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses Concert and even an Underground Lightsaber Fighters Tournament. Giveaways & Promotions You can’t walk very far without somone handing you a poster, comic book, party invitation or other promotional pieces. Over the years we’ve collected t-shirts, ball caps, posters, pins, sunglasses, virtual reality viewers, buttons and other trinkets. Street teams run around promoting shows like Outlander, featuring shirtless men wearing kilts and women playing bagpipes.

Look for Celebrities Robert Downey Jr. once donned an Iron Man mask and walked unnoticed through the crowds and Benedict Cumberbatch greeted fans waiting in line for Hall H after midnight. Last year we saw Seth Rogen being interviewed on a balcony at the Hard Rock Hotel and took selfies with the cast from Agents of Shield. You never know who is inside that Spiderman costume or black SUV!

10 Tips for Tackling Comic-Con with Kids Go early; Leave early. Comic-Con attracts a predominantly late-night party crowd so early morning is a great time to explore with kids. Take the trolley. Parking downtown is nearly impossible (and expensive). Avoid stress by taking the trolley (or get dropped off). Use sunscreen. There is a lot of waiting in line, so be sure to apply sunscreen and wear a hat. Pack snacks. While there are plenty of restaurants downtown, most have long lines so bring snacks to tide you over. Bring a backpack. To carry all the free promotional swag! Go in costume. Cosplay (costume play) is a great way to feel part of the community. Focus on comfort. Zombie makeup is an easy costume. Take photos. Most costumed characters are happy to pose for photos with kids, which make great mementos. Pick a meeting place. With such heavy crowds, designate a safe meeting place in case you get separated. Pace yourself. Sunday is typically quieter and may be more suitable for kids’ tolerance levels. Monitor media. Be Prepared Comic-Con is an electrifying and amazing experience. It’s also hot and crowded—with lots of waiting and few places to sit and rest. Plan some downtime, such as walking a few blocks away to a less crowded restaurant or heading to Embarcadero Marina Park behind the convention center to sit under a tree. Think twice before taking toddlers or children who don’t do well in large crowds— it’s not for the faint-hearted. Toddlers and preschoolers love to finger paint, so why not have them paint with their feet! This idea from blogger Asia Citro of Fun at Home with Kids is a hoot and has a short supply list: a long piece of butcher paper and washable paint. Kids will squeal with delight as they stomp through puddles of paint and make tracks on paper. Be ready with a hose and damp rags for cleanup. Love this activity? Encourage kids to make art that adds whimsy to the outdoors. Using acrylics that won’t wash off, paint rocks in bright colors or as ladybugs and bumblebees and scatter in your backyard. Have a beach art day. Go on a nature walk and collect shells, kelp, rocks and sticks in a bucket; then create a unique mosaic or word art from found objects. Take a photo of your child’s creations for his nature journal. Create sun prints in minutes. First, buy a sun print kit, available at art supply stores or online. Have kids collect natural objects with interesting textures, such as leaves, flowers or seashells. Scavenger hunts keep boredom at bay

Tired of kids complaining that there’s nothing to do? Shoo away boredom by going on a scavenger hunt—an easy way to add fun to an ordinary day! Add some of these scavenger hunts to your family’s summer bucket list.

DIY Hunts Use scavenger hunts as teaching tools. Have kids hunt for 10 objects beginning with a designated letter of the alphabet or that are a certain shape. Help kids get to know the library by finding books by authors whose names begin with the same letter as their own. Go on a flag hunt. Find out how many different types of flags your neighbors display. Or count the number of American flags as you stroll neighborhood streets. Use the five senses when taking a sensory walk. For a touch walk, look for natural objects that are soft, rough, smooth, sticky, wet or fuzzy. Take a listening walk—listen for birds singing, kids laughing, a horn blowing, etc.

Road Trip 6 family-friendly stops along the Central Coast

Perhaps you’re thinking, “San Diego is amazing. Why would we leave our beautiful city to simply drive up the coast?” Valid question, but the secret is out about San Diego—it’s a top U.S. vacation destination! So while the rest of the country is descending upon us this summer, consider venturing away from the crowds for a few days. A road trip to California’s Central Coast offers tons of fun for families and has plenty of space to venture, roam and discover. Add these stops to your road trip plans.

Just half a mile off Hwy. 101 (Avila Beach Dr. exit) is Avila Valley Barn, a fun-filled stop featuring farm animals, an ice cream shop with gourmet treats, and a country barn filled with home-baked goods, fresh produce, and specialty items. There is no entry fee to visit with animals, which include goats, pigs, miniature horses, sheep, alpaca, chickens and donkeys. Kids can even pet and feed some of them. Paint palm of hand generously. With fingers spread apart, press hand carefully onto left side of shirt. Paint horizontal stripes as shown in photo. Let dry completely. Glue sequin stars onto handprint. Wear with pride!

Use a glue gun to adhere pin back to the back of silk flower. Set aside. Place a piece of cardboard lined with wax paper inside the shirt (this prevents glue from seeping through the shirt). Cut 4-5 strips of rickrack, all the same length. Use fabric glue to adhere rickrack to the shirt in horizontal lines (leave one inch space between each). Let dry completely. Pin flower onto shirt in the upper left corner of rickrack (see photo). v
