Our San Diego

Publisher’s Letter

Families

It’s Celebration Time! Have you seen the cute bird-like houses by the sidewalk as you are going down a residential street? Look a little closer and you will find books in them. These books are for reading and sharing. Take a book and return it when you are finished and/ or add a different book. Read page 30 to learn about Little Free Libraries around San Diego County. Having a celebration with guests is always fun. If you are thinking about party favors, besides sweets or stuff that breaks easily, check out page 36 where local writer Cherie Gough gives us great ideas for party takeaways. I love the handbag idea for girls, young and grown up. There are also summer toy gift ideas that have been reviewed by San Diego County kids and parents on page 40. Find an article on how party hosts can throw an allergy-safe party at www.SanDiegoFamily .com/resources/party-planner/2038. In June we celebrate Father’s Day. How can Dad feel special when the household is new to parenthood or even when the kids are older? The article on page 24 helps you—the spouse— with ideas to give him special family time and/or couple time. The kids get out of school this month. Now what are they going to do for the long summer break? Family Magazine can help. Review the advertisements throughout the magazine to find events and exciting summer camps. Also check out our Virtual Camp Fair 24/7. Find details in the ad on page 17. Happy Dad’s Day on June 18. Daddies are always special!

What are you looking forward to at the San Diego County Fair? Michele Hancock marketing coordinator One of our family’s favorite fair stops is at Tasti Chips where freshly cut potatoes are turned into delicious, salty chips! We always give them a good dowsing of malt vinegar. Ramona Warner marketing representative New products—every year we buy something new! In the past we’ve purchased a huge flagpole, a vacuum, blender, iron, jewelry, makeup, tools, cell phone accessories and tons more.

Anne Malinoski contributing writer I like to eat my veggies at the fair. You’ll find me by the street corn and deep fried artichoke hearts. Oh, and I’ll take all of that on a stick, please!

Tony Andrews marketing representative We love the concerts and the food! Favorites vary, but the cinnamon rolls are always perfect. We get to the fair a couple hours before it gets dark so we can experience it in daylight and with all the nighttime lights.

Healing for kids after the loss of a loved one

Paul Lopez and children, 12-year-old Finn and 8-year-old Sloan

It’s been two years since Marni Kass

died from a brain tumor. Her husband Paul Lopez and children, 12-year-old Finn and 8-year-old Sloan miss her and think about her every day. The Lopez family, who lives in Carlsbad, is busy. Paul works and the kids have school and activities. Finn plays soccer; Sloan does gymnastics. But no matter how busy life gets, they always take time to connect as a family. “I think we’re in a good space right now,” says Paul, who does regular “check-ins” with the kids. “We are pretty open about Marni and the loss so we talk about it all the time.” Kass battled the brain tumor for six years. The kids remember the fun they

20 • SanDiegofamily.com • June 2017

had with their mom and her great cooking—especially taco night. “I liked when she made beans, cheese, beef, rice and lentil beans,” says Sloan, a third grader who likes art. They reminisce often and keep pictures of Marni around the house. “When I talk about my mom, it sort of makes the grief go away, more and more,” says Finn, who’s in sixth grade and wants to be a professional soccer player when he grows up.

A Place for Healing Last summer, Finn and Sloan attended Camp Erin, a bereavement camp for kids ages 6–17 dealing with the loss of a parent, sibling or anyone significant to the child.

Marni Kass “It’s easier to talk about at camp because you’re not different from everybody else,” says Finn. “There’s something that you all have in common.” Camp Erin is part of a national group of bereavement camps started by former Major League Baseball player Jamie Moyer and his wife Karen. They started the camp in Seattle to honor Erin Metcalf, a girl with liver cancer who worried about family and friends affected by the death of a loved one. There are over 45 Camp Erins nationally (one in every Major League city) and more than 18,500 kids have attended the camp. Locally, 120 kids attend Camp Erin, a free, three-day camp held every

summer. This year, camp will be at Forest Home (in the San Bernardino Mountains) at the end of July. Lots of staff and volunteers make the child-toadult ratio one-to-one. “When a death impacts a child, their world changes instantly,” says Melissa Lunardini, MA, MFTI, the children’s bereavement manager at The Elizabeth Hospice and director for Camp Erin. “A lot of their routine, a lot of their fun seems to disappear quickly. Camp is fun. We want kids to walk away feeling like it was worth their time and they had an opportunity to share their story.”

A Chance to Say Goodbye While the camp has traditional camp elements, such as playing games and singing songs, many activities focus on helping kids deal with their emotions surrounding death. “Kids need to know it’s OK to be a kid again,” says Lunardini, “We want to weave in times when they get to process their grief.” There’s an opening night memory frame ceremony, where the kids decorate a photo of their loved one. “We did a magnet with pictures,” says Sloan, showing a photo of her sitting with her mother and holding an Easter basket. She keeps that magnet on the refrigerator. There’s also a luminary ceremony, where campers decorate a bag and write a message to their loved one. Then the bags—illuminated with candles—are set adrift on a boat. “Many kids say it’s their opportunity to say goodbye,” says Lunardini, who’s been working in child bereavement for more than a decade. There’s also a plate breaking activity, where the kids write down what’s bothering them, such as worry, anger, guilt or regret. Then they break the plate, symbolizing that it’s OK to let go of stressors. “I wrote ‘brain tumor, sadness and mad,’” says Finn, noting it felt “pretty good” to smash the plate.

Getting Stronger Due to the large demand of kids who want to attend Camp Erin, most only

attend once. Still, the lessons learned last a long time. “I feel stronger about talking about my mom,” says Finn, who says his mother would be proud of him. “I don’t get as choked up as I used to.” Sloan enjoyed making friends at camp and doing activities like singing. She also liked the food. “For anyone who has a loss like this, especially for the kids, the camp is amazing,” says Paul, who has seen his kids benefit long after camp was over. “They get a chance to feel connected to someone who has an understanding of what’s going on.”

Long-Term Support The Lopez family is grateful for all the support they’ve received from family, friends and the community. The Elizabeth Hospice has been a great resource. “From the time they showed up when Marni was still alive through her passing, then even doing grief counseling and going through the resources there, it was amazing,” says Paul. The Elizabeth Hospice, funded through grants and private donations, offers families many opportunities to mourn their loss, including yearround peer support groups for kids and parents. “When no one talks, the child grieves alone,” says Lunardini. The first two years after a loss can be particularly hard for kids, which is why it’s important to talk about the loss a lot. “Grief doesn’t get fixed and doesn’t go away and it certainly doesn’t get better anytime soon,” says Lunardini. “Families need to know there’s a program that is free of charge that they can plug into as long as they need it.” Learn more and download a registration packet for Camp Erin at www.elizabethhospice.org/services/ counseling/camp-erin-san-diego. Show Love this

Father’s Day How to Make Your Spouse Feel Special When You’re Running on Empty The year my first child was born

was a blur. I spent a lot of it adjusting to the shock of parenthood and doing backflips to soothe our colicky baby. I barely noticed my own birthday and we didn’t do much for Mother’s Day. I didn’t have the energy to plan anything. When Father’s Day came around, I wanted to make it special for my husband, but I felt some resistance. It bugged me that I was supposed to express thoughtful appreciation while he got to sleep through nighttime feedings and keep up with his friends. How do you express love on Father’s Day when you’re feeling cranky? I gave my husband the gift of a play date at the park with our daughter (while I took a nap). How is that a gift to him, you ask? It worked on two fronts: First, it gave him a chance to bask in our baby’s undivided attention— something he rarely gets when I’m around. He felt like his daughter’s hero for the first time. Second, it changed the balance of our parenting partnership. We both knew he was capable of doing more with the baby—the play date dissolved a lead ball of resentment I didn’t know I was dragging around. I saw new possibilities for taking breaks,

24 • SanDiegofamily.com • June 2017

which made me calmer, happier and more hopeful. I saw that I could lean on my partner and realized how much he already held me up. Relief and gratitude reawakened the fun inside me. Tell me that was not a gift to him! If you are running on empty, use Father’s Day as an opportunity to reconnect with your husband. Here are easy, fun ways to celebrate.

Effortless Family Fun • Grab the stroller for an after-dinner walk with a stop for dessert. • Get outside for 20 minutes with a Frisbee, a bottle of bubbles or a bug-catcher. • Go somewhere you have a membership or annual passes: Balboa Park museums, Safari Park or New Children’s Museum. • Go to a mall. Grab a snack, walk around and daydream about how you would splurge if you won the lottery. • Establish a weekly family outing and let Dad choose the first destination. Consult San Diego Family’s annual publication, Out & About, for tons of great ideas: www

.SanDiegoFamily.com/out-andabout/over-600-things-to-do.

Restorative Couple Time Resist that worn-out feeling and grab a quiet, stress-free moment together. • Lazy Massage Hour: Let him control the TV remote while you massage his feet, shoulders or head for 30 minutes. Then, switch roles. • Wine and Cheese on the Couch: After the kids go to bed, have a buffet with wine, cheese, olives and fruit, or beer, nachos and guacamole. Whatever feels like an indulgence. • 90-Minute Micro Date: If you can’t be away from the kids for long, book a babysitter for a micro date. Have an appetizer at your old hangout or spend a handful of coins at the arcade. • Bicker-Buster: Skip stressed-out squabbles with a quiet walk. Bring a tasty drink and enjoy the outdoors with no pressure for conversation. • Write it on the Wall: Think of one thing you appreciate about your husband and scribble it on a whiteboard or the bathroom mirror

• Plan a backyard campout: Let them set up the tent, cook hot dogs, roast marshmallows and tell stories with spooky flashlight face. Or, let them build forts in the living room and play with flashlights. • Send them shopping for snacks and have a movie night at home. • Commission the kids to produce a video that captures the essence of Dad’s greatness. If you are facing Father’s Day with reluctance, consider a low-key celebration. LIBRARIES

Chances are, you’ve seen a Little Free Library

in your neighborhood. It would be easy to mistake one for an elaborate birdhouse, if it weren’t for the crop of books tucked inside. These small wooden boxes are usually posted outdoors, and painted in a whimsical style. The concept is delightfully simple—leave a book or take a book. The exchange is completely free. Visit www .littlefreelibrary.org/ourmap to locate 50,000 Little Free Libraries (LFL) worldwide, including more than 150 in San Diego County. Little Free Library is a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing access to books and fostering connections between neighbors. Their goal is to double the number of libraries to 100,000 by the end of 2017.

the way they’d like others to use it. Hopefully, donating as often as they take a book, and sharing desirable titles.

Finding Children’s Titles There’s no way to know exactly what you’ll find inside your local LFL, and that’s part of the fun! If you discover

How it Works

LFL, at its core, is a community-building endeavor. Libraries work best when neighbors come together to share high quality materials. The better the contributions, the more successful the library. Participants leave a book when they can, take a book when they please, and return books whenever they get the chance. It’s also perfectly acceptable to keep a book. The library operates on the honor system, and relies on neighbors using the library

that your nearest library lacks children’s material, encourage your kids to donate a few books they love, and see if that sparks an age-appropriate exchange. Remember, the LFL is only as good as the community makes it. You should donate the type and quality of materials you wish others to donate. Invite your neighbors to do the same. Search the online map for LFLs located on school grounds. They should be well stocked with children’s books. The map will also reveal who takes care of each library. Libraries maintained by scout troops and children’s organizations are likely to contain appropriate titles. Happy hunting!

Ready to Start Your Own? “Anyone can participate, though it involves making or buying the library,” says La Mesa resident, Margaret Pesce, who became a LFL steward three years ago. Pesce is a book lover, who started her library to encourage neighborhood camaraderie. Her library has been well utilized, especially by local children. Once construction is complete, a steward can visit the official LFL website to register. A small fee is assessed, and the nonprofit sends an engraved sign with the library’s official charter number. If desired, a library photo and description can be added to the world map. From there, it’s all about encouraging community engagement. Pesce hosted an open house to kick-off her library, and has seen many books passed along since then. It’s not just locals who’ve stopped by. “I had a wonderful surprise one day,” she says. “A visitor from Canada left me a sweet note!” v

Yes, I’ve been that mom—a

FANTABULOUS PARTY FAVORS

convenience junkie who puts a handful of candy and plastic trinkets in a colorful bag and calls it a goodie bag. But here’s a little secret: goodie bags aren’t so good. I feel guilty sending friends home with a bag of sugar and cheap little toys. We all know what happens next—smiling kids fall apart when the toys break minutes later. How to solve this dilemma? One school of thought is to skip goodie bags altogether. But planning and creating a thank-you gift (aka party favor) with your kids teaches them appreciation and gratitude. Get inspiration for your child’s next birthday bash with these fantabulous and eco-friendly ideas.

GET CRAFTY

Have guests make a special craft they can use again and again. Consider crafting as the first party activity—it’s a great icebreaker that keeps little hands busy as guests arrive. Plus, glue will have a chance to dry before the party is over. When artwork is complete, a great photo op awaits. These crafts use recycled materials and are budget-friendly.

Paper Bag Tiaras Jackie Currie, blogger at Happy Hooligans, created a craft that’s perfect for a garden, fairy or princess party. Make the base out of paper grocery bags in advance. Then let guests decorate with artificial flowers and raffia or stickers and jewels. Prefer a different theme? Happy Hooligans also details alien, bug and mermaid headbands. Visit Jackie’s blog for full directions. www.happyhooligans.ca/paper-bag-tiara

Retro DIY Handbags These take a bit of pre-party prep work, but the results are beautiful. Little ones will love adding creative touches with beads, patterned paper and baubles. Don’t be intimidated by the design. Lorraine offers step-by-step instructions (including a template) on her blog ikatbag. Kids can make the handbags in 20 minutes. Who knew cardboard could be so magical? www.ikatbag.com/2010/09/tea-party-behind-scenescardboard.html

Robot Vests Mary Catherine, blogger at Fun-a-Day, uses just five everyday items to craft robot vests. Awesome for high-energy little ones who want to craft quickly and get on with party fun! When the glue dries, guests can pretend to be little robots. www.fun-a-day.com/easy-robot-craft-recycled-materials

Superhero masks and capes are easy to make and kids love them. Personalize capes with each guest’s first initial. Create hats to fit any theme. At my daughter’s party, kids decorated yellow visors. Later, they transformed into a slew of Minions playing party games. Hilarious! Wands and beaded necklaces add a little sparkle to a party. Or for an outdoor activity, make beaded bubble wands. Find instructions at www.sandiego family.com/for-the-kids/craftsfor-kids/1813. Homemade slime (for a magic potion or gross-themed party) requires just a few ingredients and takes minutes to make. Have guests paint flowerpots using tempura. Fill with seed packets. Paint pre-made wooden picture frames or make them with popsicle sticks. Take fun photos in a DIY photo booth for guests to put in their new frames.

Artsy • An art set with watercolors, colored pencils, crayons or gel pens. • Little hands love Playdoh and a cookie cutter. Make it homemade if you wish. • Crayon wallets roll into small bundles and are great for kids on the go. Find them on Etsy—many sellers offer discounts for multiple purchases.

Outdoor Fun Planning a luau, sportsthemed or beach party? Kids in sunny San Diego appreciate outdoor toys such as a bouncy ball, beach ball, sidewalk chalk, hula hoop, beach toys or jump rope.

Brain Games • A deck of cards is perfect for a magic party. Teach kids a simple magic trick or how to play math games such as Go Fish, War or Crazy Eights. • Jigsaw puzzles are good for little ones; Older kids enjoy Rubik’s Cubes. • Themed maze, sticker or riddle books, Mad Libs, and origami are great options. Scholastic is a good resource.

One Sweet Treat Instead of sending home a bunch of candy, provide one sweet treat. • Decorated cookie. For my son’s second birthday, we sent children home with a single train cookie decorated in primary colors. • Small gift card to Baskin Robbins (get a discount for 10 or more) or In-N-Out Burger. A Wendy’s Frosty Key Tag allows people to get a free frosty with meal purchase throughout the year.

Accessories Colorful accessories like sunglasses, shoelaces or hair clips are practical and easy to shop for. Kids who love to dress up enjoy magic wands, silly glasses or a pair of wings.

Party Animals For an animal-themed party, send kids home with animal stickers, finger puppets or mini Beanie Boos that clip to backpacks. v Cherie Gough is a local freelance writer who believes daily mindful choices can make a big impact.

Farmers Markets Offer a Bounty of Learning As a kid who grew up on a ranch, I played in the dirt daily, grew tomatoes in the backyard and chased chickens. But my kids—like many in San Diego—are growing up in suburbia and it takes some effort to connect with nature. Going to farmers markets on a regular basis puts fresh, seasonal produce at kids’ eye level. They start to notice that foods vary week by week and learn what’s in season. This offers an opportunity to discuss why they won’t see a watermelon in January, and helps create family traditions like making peach pie in July. Lush, red strawberries and fresh corn on the cob serve as eye candy on farm stands—even to picky eaters. Farmers markets introduce kids to healthy new foods and support local farmers. Instead of just taking kids along for the ride with electronics in hand, invite them to a feast for the senses. Reap the harvest of learning opportunities that farmers markets offer. This community experience helps children learn where

food comes from, reinforces important social skills and offers fun math practice. Here are more ways to inspire learning.

help build confidence and decisionmaking skills. It’s also an opportunity for kids to use the scale, estimate total cost, and count the money and change.

1. Eat a Rainbow

3. Practice Communication

Look for fruits and veggies in all the colors of the rainbow and try buying one of each color. This can be a lesson (and a good reminder to parents) about the importance of eating fresh, unprocessed foods. Eating each color of the rainbow provides different (and much-needed) vitamins and antioxidants to keep bodies and minds healthy and strong.

I’ve taught my kids to say please and thank you, but in this age of overabundant screen time, an essential missing skill for many kids is everyday conversation with adults. The farmers market gives them practice using eye contact, projecting their voices and asking meaningful questions. Asking a farmer questions such as “Why are these carrots purple?” helps kids feel a connection to those who grow the food and helps them gain understanding of where it comes from. Bonus: Teaching kids to ask questions that begin with “How” or “Why” encourages them to use analytical and evaluative skills.

2. Be Money-Wise Let your child be in charge of a small purchase. Being responsible to hold the money and choose an item to buy will

& Catering

Affordable catering for ANY occasion:

Birthdays, Graduations, and more!

Farmers Market Create-and-Play Activity Book includes 100+ stickers and paper punch-outs. Kids can set up a pretend farm and sell their goods with signs, price tags and more. Games and activities delight kids while they learn. Available on Amazon.

4. One Potato, Two Potato The littlest market-goers can take part in learning fun with counting practice. As they put pieces of fruit on the scale or in the bag, have them count each one aloud.

5. I Do Like Green Eggs and Ham! Tech-savvy kids can use online resources to research what’s in season and find seasonal recipes that the family will enjoy. Meal planning and cooking provides buy-in when it’s time to eat dinner, especially when trying new foods. Don’t pass up free samples when shopping at the farmers market. They’re a great test to see if your family might like something new. Cooking

together introduces key math concepts like measuring and fractions—and it’s just plain fun.

6. It’s Easy Being Green Explain to your children how shopping at local farmers markets benefits the environment. Buying local means less gas to transport items from faraway places. Organic produce means no pesticides harmed the air or water to grow the crop. Dollars spent here contribute to the farmers’ livelihood and build a sense of community. v Cherie Gough is a freelance writer and former teacher who grew up on a local chicken ranch.
