Our San Diego

Families

Where has your family taken a memorable spring break vacation?

National City’s Mariachi Festival, St. Paddy’s Day and Time for Camp This month Lisa Pawlak tells us about National City, which is less than 15 minutes south of downtown San Diego and has a population of about 60,000. I was at a meeting at Olivewood Gardens in National City last month. They have beautiful gardens and offer gardening and cooking classes. Visit them on weekends with your family and get inspired to start a little garden, even if you don’t have a big yard. Check out the Mariachi Festival on March 12, plus find other fun things to do in the area on page 42. March starts spring/summer camp season. Check out our camp directory on page 22 and note the companies who have great camps. If you have a preschooler, ask yourself if your child is ready for camp. Read Ann Malinoski’s article on page 20 to help you make a decision. It is time to nominate your Best of Family Fun favorites in San Diego County (through March 8). On page 18 is a list of categories. When nominating, please make sure to tell us why they are your favorites. St. Patrick’s Day is March 17. Our office has a green food lunch. It’s always fun to see what everyone brings. I am inspired by the Leprechaun Bait on page 46.

Adrienne Sigeti administrative assistant One year my family took a trip to the Grand Canyon. I remember peering over the guardrail to see the beautiful reds, yellows and oranges of the canyon below. As a kid, it looked otherworldly like something that belonged on the moon or Mars. It was an unforgettable experience. Ramona Warner marketing representative This year we’re taking college tours! My daughter (a junior in high school) thinks she wants to stay in California for college, but we are also exploring other areas so she can compare campuses. We’re visiting University of Texas in Austin, TCU in Fort Worth and hopefully Purdue in Indiana. Lisa Gipson, managing editor My daughter and I had so much fun in Lake Chelan, Washington last spring—a great time to visit this beautiful area. We have many wonderful memories of the trip! One highlight was a delicious breakfast at Blueberry Hills, a farmhouse and local favorite in nearby Manson. We sat on the patio to enjoy breathtaking views of the berry farm. Gina Petrone, proofreader We love road trips! Once we spent four days exploring Tucson, Arizona. We toured Biosphere 2, went underground at Kartchner Caverns State Park, rode a stagecoach through Tombstone, fed a variety of animals at Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch and left activities for our next visit! Visit the Family Travel section of our website for kidfriendly spring and summer trip ideas: www .SanDiegoFamily.com/travel/family-travel.

Perfect Progress helps families find and address the root cause of developmental, cognitive, behavioral and social issues in their children. The goal is for children to unlock their true learning potential in the safest and least invasive way using therapies that work. The Perfect Progress staff is trained and certified by the International Association of Certified Tomatis Consultants (IACTC) to administer the Tomatis Listening Test. The test helps restore a child’s listening abilities to improve attention span and develop lifelong learning skills. In addition, the Tomatis Neuro-Auditory Program is excellent for musicians, singers and athletes and is an incredible tool for learning new languages. Since no two individuals have the exact same skills or learning style, Perfect Progress offers an individual listening plan for every child. The Tomatis Listening Program is available in their office or in the comfort of your own home. Perfect Progress 1530 Baltimore Pl., Escondido 760-522-0875 www.perfectprogressllc.com

Is Your Preschooler Ready for Day Camp? There’s so much to love about camp. Kids learn teamwork and fun traditions. New friendships are formed as they explore exciting themes from art to athletics. It’s no wonder parents like to start kids in camp at a young age. Even the littlest campers can expect a positive experience. According to Ashley Melton, a seasoned camp counselor and teaching credential student at SDSU, young children adapt quite well to day camp. “Camp is one of the best things you can do for your preschooler,” Melton says. “You are providing a structured schedule, new adults to learn from and new environments to explore. Those are all big wins in the 3-5 age range.”

Here are five signs your preschooler is ready to join the fun at day camp: He enjoys playing with other kids. It’s normal for young toddlers to prefer playing alone, but as they grow into the preschool years, kids start to play cooperatively with one another. You might see them sharing toys or playing make believe together. If your child has made this shift, he’s likely to enjoy team-centered activities at camp. He’s been cared for in a group setting. If your child has been to daycare, preschool, Sunday school or even child watch at the gym, camp is likely to be a familiar and positive experience for him. If he is grouped with kids his age, counselors will likely make activities fun and developmentally appropriate for them.

20 • SanDiegofamily.com • March 2017

If your child has never experienced group care before, camp is a great way to learn that other adults can be excellent caregivers and role models. You have to start somewhere—it might as well be somewhere fun. He tells you he’s interested. It’s important to ask preschoolers how they feel. Start a positive conversation about camp. Share your own memories from camp and talk about some of the great things he might do as a camper. Ask if he’d like to attend. If it’s a big yes, he’s probably ready. If he’s nervous about a few things, keep the conversation

Questions for the Camp Director: Is there a half-day camp option? Will my child be grouped with kids his age? If my child feels homesick, how will the staff help him cope? How many children do you expect in his age group? If an older sibling attends this camp, can they spend time together?

going. You can decide together whether this is the right year to start. He is comfortable in loud spaces. Is your kid a champ when attending baseball games? Chances are, he’ll do great in a busy, noisy summer camp environment. His ability to remain unruffled when crowds get excited shows he’s big enough to handle—and enjoy—an energetic group of kids. You are ready. If you know your child is ready for camp, be sure to tell him so. Young children need parents to set the tone in new situations. “If you feel confident in those running the camp and their abilities—and if you convey that confidence to your child—he will follow your lead,” Melton says. Explain that camp is a safe and fun place to be and that the counselors will take good care of him. Your preschooler will mirror your conviction. v Anne Malinoski is a local freelance writer and mother of two boys who spent college summers as a camp counselor. Let Your Kids Get Messy A clean freak’s guide to sensory play Part one of a two-part series I’ll admit it—I have a problem with messes. My baby wants to smash soft foods into his hair. My 3-year-old wants to roll in paint. Yes, roll. One morning, my preschooler went wide-eyed and asked, “Mom, can I please get messy?” Clearly, he noticed my distaste for all things slimy, gooey and dirty. He was hopping from foot to foot with longing. What’s a mom to do? I took a deep breath and said, “OK.” He promptly grabbed a box of dot markers and adorned his entire body with bright spots. It took three days and multiple baths to remove them. He was delighted. I’m still on the fence. Not every parent is a clean freak, but most parents have vetoed a messy activity simply to avoid the dreaded cleanup. It’s time to let go. Messy play is sensory play—the gold standard of early childhood learning. Children learn best when they engage multiple senses. The more they can touch, taste, see, feel and hear in their play activities, the better—better for their brains, that is (your floors and counters might be worse off). Here are tips to engage in sensory play without losing your sanity.

Messy Play for Babies If your baby can sit up, she’s probably ready for messy play. She might be hesitant at first, but keep trying. These activities will be more fun as she gains familiarity with them. Body paint Let baby be your canvas. Use non-toxic, water-based

paint and a soft brush to cover her skin with bright colors. Contain the mess by painting in an empty bathtub. Your wiggly little masterpiece will be free to touch, explore and smear. When the fun is over, simply rinse the paint away. Not ready for an epic mess? Fill the brush with water instead of paint. Colored spaghetti A bowl of spaghetti is a wonderful, squishy experience for a baby. Add color by mixing cooked noodles with a drop of food coloring and oil or find a recipe for natural food coloring. Omitting color will still create a fun sensory experience. Water play Gather an assortment of plastic containers and cups. Fill the large containers with water. Show your baby how to scoop the water from one container to another. Talk about the noises you can make by pouring, dumping and splashing the water. Keep a few towels handy so cleanup will be a breeze.

Messy Play for Little Kids Ready to get messy with your youngster? Try these activities with your preschool or elementary-aged kids. Remind them that they’ll need to help with cleanup when the fun is over. Cornstarch goop Even clean-freak parents will want to get their hands in this fun science experiment. Just combine two parts cornstarch with one part water. The irresistible goop has a unique consistency that changes from sort-of-solid when you press it, to sort-of-liquid when you pour it. The best part? It washes off quickly with a little water. Mix in a couple drops of food coloring for messy bonus points. Ice block In a large mixing bowl, freeze small plastic toys in a few inches of water at a time so there are toys “layered” throughout the bowl. Once it’s solid, remove the hunk of ice and place it in a larger plastic bin. Experiment with different tools to introduce warm water—like turkey

Mess-Free Sensory Play Not all sensory play is messy. Other ways to engage the senses include: • Music and movement • Light or shadow play • Exploring different textures • Smelling or tasting new foods

basters or squirt guns—and melt the ice block. The giant, messy puddle will be well contained in the bin. Keep towels nearby. Shaving cream It’s so versatile and washes away easily. Practice writing sight words in it. Or add a drop of food coloring to paint with it. For something completely different, add ice cubes and build with it. The cream will act like mortar.

Messy Activities for Older Kids Tweens and teens need to get messy, too. Encourage your child’s unique interests with these hands-on learning activities. Cooking Creating a meal is the ultimate sensory experience. Teach your child the basics; then let her try a recipe by herself. Supervise from a distance. Don’t stress about the mess and be OK with mistakes. The skills will encourage a lifetime of creative expression and thoughtful food choices. Tinkering Encourage your tween to design, build or disassemble something, whether it’s a machine or a Halloween costume. Agree on a designated space where tools, parts and pieces can remain until the project is finished so clutter doesn’t take over the house. v Find fun experiments in the Family Science section of our website: www.SanDiegoFamily.com/for-thekids/family-science. chemistry, they’ll love experimenting at Creamistry, an ice cream chain in Clairemont Mesa and Carmel Valley that offers a brainy twist on your favorite frozen dessert. At Creamistry, ice cream is made fresh before your eyes. A “creamologist” adds liquid nitrogen to the mixing bowl, creating a billowy, foggy reaction as your dessert freezes instantly. The rapid freezing process keeps milk molecules extra small and prevents ice crystals from forming. The result is the smoothest, creamiest ice cream you’ve ever tasted. Thank you, science! First, choose from four creamy, liquid bases: premium, organic, non-dairy coconut or sorbet. Next, choose from more than 70 flavors and mix-ins. Once your selections are made, watch the impressive chemistry for yourself. I picked the coconut cream base with pistachio flavor and upgraded to a chocolate bowl. My toddler opted for a mango sorbet; my husband chose cheesecake with whipped cream in a waffle bowl. We were all wowed by the impossibly smooth texture of our indulgent frozen treats.

What’s the mystical fog around my ice cream?

This unique process begins with the nitrogen at -321 degrees Fahrenheit. As the liquid nitrogen is exposed to the ice cream base, it heats up and changes phase from liquid to gas. Since the base does not absorb the nitrogen, the gas escapes the prep bowl and heats to room temperature. During this process the nitrogen cools and condenses the moisture in the air, forming a fun fog effect.

My son has a mild peanut allergy, so I was happy to see that each order is prepared with a fresh bowl and paddle, reducing the risk of crosscontamination. My hypothesis: your family will have a blast at Creamistry. Visit www .creamistry.com to learn more. v Anne Malinoski is a freelance writer and mother of two boys. Explore the Ocean Sciences Does your little one have big dreams for the future? Perhaps

she dreams of outer space explorations or of venturing to the depths of our own planet’s oceans. Whatever her future aspirations, San Diego offers a wealth of fun, educational activities and experiences for young scientists-in-themaking. Of particular interest to coastal-raised youth, local opportunities abound to explore the ocean sciences. If the prospects of discovering new marine species, reversing climate change, saving coral reefs or halting coastal erosion sound like worthwhile goals, you may want to explore these exhibits and opportunities. Birch Aquarium recently opened the Expedition at Sea R/V Sally Ride Gallery. The exhibit, which welcomes the R/V Sally Ride into Scripps Institute of Oceanography’s impressive research fleet, is designed to inspire and educate future scientists about the range of experiences involved in conducting global research at sea. The gallery also serves as a precursor to a major new exhibit, The Expedition, expected Summer 2017. Named in Dr. Sally Ride’s honor, the R/V Sally Ride is America’s newest research vessel (R/V); owned by the U.S. Navy and operated by Scripps Institute of Oceanography (SIO) at UC San Diego. Dr. Ride was the first American woman in space and a professor of physics at UCSD. Birch’s new, interactive gallery offers hands-on experiences to simulate a sea-going scientist’s life. Dr. Ride once said, “The challenge isn’t getting students interested in science, it’s keeping them interested.” This gallery will certainly help.

Within the exhibit, an immersive, 33-foot-long digital media wall sets the oceanic ambiance by showcasing images from the ship and allowing visitors to be surrounded by the sights and sounds of being out at sea. Meanwhile, guests of all ages enjoy exploring a number of interactive exhibits. Kids love playing in the “sandbox”—an area where sand-like material can be shaped to model underwater mountains and valleys. A sensor then measures the heights of these structures, projecting contour lines and colors back onto the surface while you work. While young ones may simply like the colorful, rainbow effect, older kids learn how sonar technology is used to map the ocean floor. Other interactive exhibits include a 360-degree virtual tour of the R/V Sally Ride where visitors learn how SIO’s scientists live, eat, sleep and work while out at sea; touch-

Visit the “Dive Deeper” section of Birch Aquarium’s website, where you’ll find valuable information and resources to help inspire and educate future scientists: https://aquarium .ucsd.edu. Another exhibit to look forward to is the Ocean Discovery Institute’s Living Lab, scheduled to open in City Heights this fall. The state-of-the-art, $15 million educational facility will work with local schools and the community at large to engage people of all ages to explore ocean science education, scientific research and environmental stewardship. If the prospect of working with aquatic animals appeals to your child, a visit to Living Coast Discovery Center in Chula Vista might do the trick. This fun destination aims to connect people with coastal animals, plants and habitats. Daily animal encounters include feeding the rays and

meeting sharks; don’t miss the recently remodeled turtle lagoon. Visit www .thelivingcoast.org to learn more about events, career exploration for teens and other family-friendly offerings. SEA LIFE Aquarium, adjacent to Legoland, offers daily ocean-themed educational talks, animal encounters and feeding demonstrations. The popular Dive Show and Ocean Tank Talks are fun and informative. And, of course, San Diego also has SeaWorld’s many attractions and educational experiences. They even offer a sleepaway Career Camp for teens. Girls may be especially interested and motivated by Dr. Sally Ride herself. To encourage girls in science, Dr. Ride co-founded Sally Ride Science at UC San Diego, which focuses on programs for middle and high school girls and provides professional development for K-12 STEM and Arts (STEAM) educators. The Sally Ride Science Junior Academy is offering weeklong summer workshops this year, with the goal of inspiring girls to pursue related careers. The sessions offer a variety of themes, including “Being Nemo: A Fish-eye View of the Ocean.” For more info, visit www.sallyridescience.com. v

Don’t miss EXPO Day! Saturday, March 4 To discover more about STEM careers in general, don’t miss the San Diego Science and Engineering Expo event at PETCO Park on March 4. The expo targets K-12 science lovers, is free and open to the public, and has more than 100 local organizations participating. Salk Institute for Biological Studies plans to bring their Mobile Science Lab, primarily designed for school venues, so this is a unique opportunity to see it. The expo also offers a “Making Waves” oceanography tour that introduces students to marine plants. Learn more at www .lovestemsd.org. 7 Steps to More Helpful Children Experts agree that household chores can provide confidence and self-discipline, encouraging children to see themselves as an indispensible part of the family. But how do parents get kids to be more helpful?

I watched as my friend’s 12-year-old chopped wood in the

backyard. I wasn’t sure which was more amazing: that he was helping without being asked or that she allowed him to use an ax and appeared to be completely at ease about it. He entered the house, took off his boots and put a couple logs on the fire. Why was her child taking on such grown-up tasks when I could barely get mine to clean their rooms? I decided to figure out how to get this type of help from my kids. After many years of study, I now have a teenager who takes out the garbage without being asked and a 4-year-old who is almost solely responsible for feeding our cat. Here are tips I learned along the way:

1. Give children choices. When kids are able to choose from a

variety of chores, they are more likely to accomplish the chores happily. One child may prefer emptying the dishwasher while another enjoys setting the table. Compliance is more likely if a child’s preferences are honored.

2. Make sure chores are age appropriate. Even toddlers

and preschoolers can help set or clear the table, feed pets, sort silverware, put toys away, put laundry in the hamper or run a dust mop around the living room. Giving children chores that they can complete themselves helps with confidence and provides a sense of accomplishment.

3. Teamwork helps. Doing chores together can make them more enjoyable. Preschool kids often respond well to simple clean-up songs. Some chores, such as unloading the dishwasher, easily lend themselves to cooperation and just get done faster. Find words to eight fun songs in “Silly Songs to Get Chores Done” at www .SanDiegoFamily.com/resources-by-age/preschooler/1835.

4. Try a visual reminder. Just as adults get

satisfaction in checking off a to-do list, a chart

40 • SanDiegofamily.com • March 2017

on the fridge can help children track accomplishments. If the child is too young to read, draw a small picture or use another image to represent the chore in a concrete way. Clothespins or Velcro help make the chart interactive. As an alternative, try a free chore app such as ChoreMonster (on iTunes) or My Job Chart (www.myjobchart.com).

Advanced & Pre-Professional Summer Dance Intensives

5. Teach and check for

understanding. Model chores for your child and then make sure he understands. Having him show you how he will do the chore ensures that he paid attention to instructions and can do it independently.

6. Offer an allowance—or not. While

many agree that chores help raise productive, responsible children, the verdict is still out on whether or not an allowance is necessary or helpful. Some experts condone an allowance—others condemn one. There are benefits to both. Choosing to give an allowance means children can learn to manage money at an early age and, of course, provides additional motivation. Others feel strongly that children should help the family without financial reward.

7. Have a back-up plan. It may help to

have alternative motivation. The words “as soon as” can be almost magical in getting children to lend a hand: “As soon as you finish your chores, you can play Minecraft or watch TV.” “As soon as you’re done with your chores, we’ll be able to visit your friends.” These words put responsibility on the child. If he wants to play Minecraft or see friends, he will get his bed made. If not, the child knows the blame is his alone. Whether your children are toddlers or teenagers, these tips can help transform household chores from a battleground to a regularly scheduled part of the day. v Freelance writer Jill Morgenstern is a teacher, wife and mother of four kids. St. Patrick’s Day Fun LEPRECHAUN BAIT The kids are sure to catch a crafty leprechaun on St. Patrick’s Day with this festive chocolate bark. Thank you to Deborah at Super Moms 360 for sharing her ideas with us!

Ingredients 1 Package white chocolate chips 1 Medium bag of M&M’S - separate the green ones 1 package Oreos Green sugar sprinkles 9x12 baking pan Wax paper

Directions Break Oreos into large pieces and set aside. Optional: scrape the icing out of cookies first. In a microwave safe bowl, melt white chocolate chips on 50 percent power for 1½–2 minutes until melted and smooth, stirring every 30 seconds. Pour into baking pan (lined with wax paper) and smooth with spatula. Sprinkle broken Oreos over the top and press down gently. Add green M&M’S and sprinkles to the top. Place in refrigerator for 30–45 minutes. Break into pieces before serving.

PINCH-PROOF BRACELET

Have fun making these cute bracelets, which provide just enough green to make your family pinch-proof on St. Patrick’s Day!

Supplies Buttons in various shades of green String Scissors

Directions Measure the string by wrapping it around your wrist; cut to desired length (leave several inches for tying knots at the ends). Tie a knot at one end of the string to prevent buttons from falling off. At the opposite end of the string, begin threading it through the buttons. Some buttons have four holes, but you only need to use two. Buttons will naturally layer back and forth. Add enough buttons to fit around your wrist. Tie a loop at the end to tie off the bracelet. The loop can hook around the first button from the opposite end. Find more creative and festive ideas from Deborah Stallings Stumm at www.SuperMoms360.com.

10 RULES of PICKY-FREE

PARENTING

by Natalie Digate Muth, MD, MPH, RDN, FAAP

Picky eating is extremely common during childhood, and a common source of parental frustration. While parents may react to picky eating in many different ways, I recommend adopting what I refer to as a “picky-free parenting” approach. With this approach, a parent sets the stage to make it easier for a child to make healthier, more adventurous food choices, without the mealtime battles. The parents control what they

can – and give the child room to make some choices, too. Undoing picky eating is a process, but parents who adopt a picky-free parenting approach can be sure that they are practicing the most effective, science-based methods to help their kids ultimately be healthy, more adventurous eaters.

1) Be a good role model. Your example

of healthy eating is extremely powerful. Let the kids see your openness to trying new flavors and tastes.

2) Parents decide what food is offered, when it is offered (meal and

snack times) and where to eat. Kids decide what (of offered foods) to eat.

3) See the value in one bite. Repeat exposure (10-15 times), and they will come around to new foods.

4) Clean plates are not required. Pay

attention to hunger cues for fullness. You can use the hunger scale to help your kids make choices on hunger and fullness, and become a more mindful eater (start eating around three, stop by six; try to stay away from the red and orange zones). It takes 20 minutes to feel full, so slow down while eating.

5) No food rewards (sweets, dessert). Rewards are only a short-term fix, and may set the stage for emotional eating.

6) Mealtime = family time. Shop, cook

and eat together, at least three times per week, with no “screens” at the table.

Natalie Digate Muth, MD, MPH, RDN, FAAP is a pediatrician at Children’s Physicians Medical Group – La Costa and the co-author of “The Picky Eater Project: 6 Weeks to Happier, Healthier Family Mealtimes” published by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

7) One family, one meal. Don’t prepare special meals for picky eaters (see #2). 8) Learn together. Plant a garden, or get kids to shop with you.

9) Have fun! Try not to take mealtime too seriously. Enjoy!

10) Be consistent, not rigid. Pick a

couple of these ten suggestions to work on first.

In general, a hungry child will eat!

That applies to camp snacks, too. Pack healthy options, or suggest the idea to the camp leadership to offer healthy options, like fresh or dried fruit, light popcorn, carrot sticks and dip, or nocalorie flavored water. Offer the kids a choice between 2 equally healthy options. When they get the choice, they’ll be more likely to eat it. If the camp offers highly processed, not-so-healthy options, talk with the leadership and see if they’d be willing to make some changes (ask them to follow the USDA “Smart Snacks in Schools” guidelines).

Bon appètit!
