Lose the Weight - Look & Feel GREAT! Without Shots/Drugs, Surgery or Exercise

Christine was skeptical but lost 33 lbs and 2 sizes in 60 days.

Lew was skeptical but it worked “amazingly well” and lost 22 lbs.

Sandy lost 20 lbs in 2 months and even her skin and hair is better!

“I knew I wanted to make changes after I had my 2 year old and get rid of my baby fat. Dr. Wong guided me along the way and was very supportive and I’ve lost 23 pounds in 2 months. I’ve met my goals and I’m happy! I feel a lot better, healthier and I have more energy. I’ve noticed that I’ve had to get new clothes!” Mandy C. — San Diego

“After being on Dr. Wong’s program for 2 months, I’ve lost almost 40 pounds. I was lethargic and couldn’t keep up with my kids but I’ve found an answer to my energy problems and I wake up with energy, I feel better, I’ve been eating healthier and I’ve been more active. Thank you Dr. Wong!” Rachel R. — San Diego

“Before I came to see Dr. Wong, I had a lot of health concerns. I had extreme knee pain, I was over-weight and I also had a lack of energy. After I had a consultation with Dr. Wong, he told me what was wrong. Everything we did involved no pain and in 8 weeks, I have lost 32 pounds without doing exercise! I am a lot more energetic and I feel like working out. I am stronger, more alert, more flexible and limber so I appreciate everything about Dr. Wong. If you’re ever in need of optimal health, come see Dr. Wong because he’ll make you strong!” Rodney W. — San Diego

Our San Diego

Publisher’s Letter

Gardening, Spring/Summer Camps, Road School, Easter Egg Hunts Spring is upon us, with or without rain—hopefully we

get some this spring! Even without rain, you can still plant a garden. Have the kids help plant veggies in the ground or in pots. I like the advice from our “Plant a Garden” article on page 16: plant bigger seeds for little fingers. The kids will be excited to watch their plants grow and then eat them. Plant flowers also—they help keep bugs away. If you need more advice, in the article you’ll also find six learning gardens around San Diego County. Spring and summer camp sign-ups are starting now. Check out the camp ads throughout this issue. To make sure the kids get the camps they want, register now. Some camps are held during spring break, so look for those, too. Give them a call or register online. Let the camp staff know you saw their ad in San Diego Family Magazine. Advertisers help provide the magazine to you for free! Another way to make learning fun is to go on a road school adventure. This month, part two of our road school series focuses on STEM subjects. See page 18. There are tours within driving distance from San Diego, day trips and weekend trips. Just slow down and enjoy learning. See it all, ask questions and take it all in. Easter is Sunday, April 1, but Easter egg hunts are in this month’s calendar because most take place March 24-31. Have fun looking for eggs and the Easter bunny throughout the county.

Families

Are you planning any spring or summer break trips with your family? Jenny Burman calendar editor We’re planning to get a much-needed dose of Disney magic at Disney World (our first time!), to grant my son’s wish to see the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and to explore a couple spots in Canada. We’re excited! Michele Hancock marketing director For spring break we are exploring fun attractions right here in our backyard. On our must-do list is The Mission Restaurant for breakfast, the new rides at SeaWorld and spending a day visiting the museums in Balboa Park. Lisa Gipson, managing editor We’re “glamping” up the coast at Flying Flags RV Resort in Buellton (near the town of Solvang, which I love). Accommodations include safari tents, cottages and vintage airstream trailers (and RV sites, of course). Can’t wait to explore the area on electric bikes! Lisa Pawlak contributing writer We recently visited Sedona, Arizona for the first time— and hope to return soon for more hiking adventures. I can’t believe it took all these years to discover such an amazing place—and within just a day’s drive from San Diego. To discover what Lisa Pawlak recommends when visiting Sedona, read her article at www.SanDiegoFamily.com/ things-to-do/travel.

HEALTHY CHICKEN BOWL - 580 Calories

Kathy Estep Hester, San Diego’s wizard of lizards, grew up on a lake surrounded by snapping turtles and bullfrogs. Today she brings her love and enthusiasm for “creepy crawlies” of the world to San Diego kids and families. Hester and her cast of lovable animals offer interactive experiences like no other. Meet-and-greets with 25 exotic creatures such as tree frogs, arthropods, tortoises, lizards and snakes charm kids and adults alike. One of Hester’s goals is to debunk the myths surrounding these frequently misunderstood animals. “By the time I get to the most predictable of my animals—the snakes—many will partake in the ‘snakelace’ worn around their shoulders.” The joy and excitement brought by the animals have kept Lizard Wizard and her friends in business for nearly 25 years. Lizard Wizard is available for parties of all ages, special ceremonies, school presentations, camps and more. “Please pass the salad,” says the child in every mom’s fantasyland. Convincing kids to eat vegetables often feels like a chore. Researchers report that when a child takes ownership of growing or preparing a meal, they are more likely to try new foods. So, when my kids were little, I embarked on an experiment: What if we grew our own vegetables—would the kids try tomatoes off the vine (even yellow ones)? What about zucchini? The answer was a resounding, Yes!

There are many reasons to garden

with children. For one thing, kids love to get dirty—they love sowing seeds, digging and watering. But there are many more benefits! Take a journey down the garden path with your family this spring, whether it’s building raised beds or growing herbs in the kitchen window.

For more on this topic, read “Let the Kids Get Dirty, A Clean Freak’s Tips to Outdoor Play” at www.SanDiegoFamily.com/ parenting/toddler/2025. Why Garden? The key to optimum health benefits and nutrients from produce is freshness. In her book The Wahl’s Protocol, Dr. Terry Wahls, an expert in autoimmune diseases writes, “Vitamin and antioxidant content in fresh fruits and vegetables degrades over time.” Gardening is the best possible way to ensure the freshest produce.

Good for the Environment Organic gardening ensures no pesticides or synthetic fertilizers leave residue on food; good for people, good for the environment. Grocery store produce travels an average of 1,500 miles, according to Lisa Leake, author of 100 Days of Real Food. That’s a lot of gas and pollution along the way. Consider shopping at local farmers markets. The Great Outdoors According to the National Recreation and Park Association, children today spend less time outdoors than any other generation. When kids spend time outside, they reap the benefits of: • Physical exercise • Reduced stress and fatigue • Longer attention spans • Better eyesight (excessive close-range indoor activities can lead to myopia) • A sense of wonder and a connection to nature

Tips for Growing Food with Kids • Bigger seeds (peas, beans, squash) are easier for little hands to handle. • Give kids ownership—let them choose what to plant. • Plant fast-growing items (runner beans, sunflowers, baby carrots) for quick results. • Taste test what you grow— variety will help diversify kids’ diets. • No yard? Get tips on how to plant a patio garden with kids at www.sandiegofamily.com/ things-to-do/out-about/1803.

Alternatives to Home Gardening Community Gardens For about $100 per year, families can lease a garden plot in a community garden where neighbors share tools, soil and advice. It’s a great way to build community, learn about everything from pest control to composting from neighborhood experts, and save on your water bill. Find a community garden near you at www.sdcgn.org/ index.html. School Gardening Programs In school gardens throughout the county, educators teach science, food origins and healthy eating habits, and immerse students in hands-on outdoor lessons. Grants are available to help get schools get started on a garden. Visit the local Master Gardener Association website to find field trips, garden consultants and grant resources: www .mastergardenerssandiego.org/ schools/schools.php. Good Neighbor Gardens teaches garden education in eight local schools. School cafeterias use the produce and volunteers distribute the surplus to subscribers through CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture). Subscription fees are reinvested in the students. To get your school involved, visit www .goodneighborgardens.com. All students in the Encinitas Union School District learn grade-level lessons at its Farm Lab and DREAMS (Design, Research, Engineering, Art, Math, Science) Campus. Students learn about healthy eating and food production, and they help grow organic produce, which provides salad bars in each school. Community businesses help fund the program. Road School, Part 2 The world is your classroom

This is the second article in a two-part series. Missed the first article? Find it at www.sandiegofamily.com/things-to-do/out-about/2144.

Last month we discussed the exciting trend of road schooling, which takes parents and children on the road— sometimes traveling the world—to enhance their education with real-life, hands-on experiences. But meaningful experiential learning doesn’t require families to leave work and school for

months at a time. A day trip in beautiful Southern California can be educational, memorable and valuable. In February we suggested day and weekend trips that teach kids about art, culture and history. Here are micro-adventures that support science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning. continued on p.20

For more than 20 years, San Diego activists Danica and Jason Russell have poured their uniquely energetic brand of humanitarian leadership into projects like Invisible Children and Kony 2012. Now that their children, Gavin Danger (10) and Everley Darling (8) are growing into the family vocation, the Russells have written a book for young change-makers. “A Little Radical—The ABCs of Activism” empowers kids to make the world better, letter by letter. But writing it down wasn’t enough for this intensely creative bunch. They recently sold all their possessions to travel the world and experience those lessons firsthand. They’re on the road now, meeting activists across the globe who can teach them more about making a difference, and living the values discussed in their book. “It feels like the world is really divided right now, and traveling is a way to not only embrace different perspectives and cultures, but it’s a way to change your life forever,” says Jason of the unconventional book tour. Don’t have all day? Get a dose of STEM education at these local standbys. La Brea Tar Pits & Museum Los Angeles, CA Visit this active dig site to learn how animals became trapped in the tar, and how scientists are using those fossils to learn more about our planet’s last ice age. Kids will love the tar pull, where they can see what it’s really like to be stuck in tar—without getting sticky. Catch a 3D film or live multimedia show to explore the work done here. Step into the museum to see full skeletal displays of ice age land mammals like the mammoth or sabertooth cat. Guests can also visit the Fossil Lab where paleontologists study fossils pulled from the tar. Plan your trip at www.tarpits.org.

National Park Service Junior Ranger Program Nationwide Take a weekend trip to Joshua Tree National Park or visit any of our country’s beautiful national parks to request a Junior Ranger Booklet. Inside are activities for kids to complete while exploring the park, such as drawing and writing about what they see or picking up trash to preserve the park’s beauty. Once they’ve completed the tasks, kids can be sworn in as Junior Rangers. Activities are free and designed for children ages 5-13, though all are welcome to participate. Learn about other national programs such as Junior Archaeologist and Junior Wilderness Explorer at www.nps.gov/ kids/jrRangers.cfm.

CAMP for That

Remember long days of summer

camp—playing outdoors, swimming, fishing and making crafts? Traditional spring and summer camps are tons of fun, but don’t overlook camps that also offer a unique spin. Read on to get a taste of the camp variety available in San Diego. Then book an adventure your child won’t forget!

Animals Whether your animal lover is into house pets, farm or exotic animals, or saving endangered species, educational camps that encourage hands-on animal encounters abound in San Diego. Camps include: Exotic critter connections, animal-related vocations, horseback riding, and camps at animal shelters, the zoo, and local aquariums.

Performing Arts Got a natural performer in your house? Channel that talent into something awesome. Camps include: Acting, dancing, singing, instrumental music, juggling, circus arts, clown artistry. Learn and experience: Teamwork, improvisation, choreography, growth mindset, creativity, performance skills, body language. Perfect for: Kids and young starlets who want to hone a natural talent, need a confidence boost, are imaginative or love storytelling. According to Carla Corder of San Diego Junior Theatre, “Summer camps foster a community of artistic achievement, learning, teamwork, empathy, communication and confidence.”

22 • SanDiegofamily.com • March 2018

Learn and experience: Animal interactions such as petting, holding, grooming, walking and feeding; animal education, responsibility, compassion. Perfect for: Animal-loving children and teens interested in marine biology, zoology or veterinary science. Kelly Rumsey at Helen Woodward Animal Center states, “We not only teach kids amazing animal facts, but we emphasize the importance of the animal-human bond. Campers get to discover how they can help animals and the world we all share through animal adoption, preservation, fundraising, recycling and so much more!”

Ocean Sports Whether your beach bum wants to perfect surfing skills or take on a new challenge, you’ll find a camp for that. Camps include: Surfing, paddle boarding, kayaking, sailing, snorkeling, ocean science, lifeguard training. Learn and experience: Water safety, proper use of equipment, environmentalism, swimming skills, ocean science and more. Perfect for: Active kids who enjoy the water. Birch Aquarium’s Surfing Into Science program offers ocean adventures and marine science for kids ages 12–15, according to Marketing Coordinator Caitlyn Scully. They surf, snorkel, meet with scientists and more. Visit www.aquarium.ucsd .edu/experiences/programs/ summer-camps for details.

Mind/Body Connection Is your child a gentle, free spirit who loves nature and thrives in the outdoors? Camps include: Yoga, low-risk sports, mindfulness connection, nature exploration. For example, check out the camps at Wild Willow Farm in South Bay.

Adventure Sports With the popular TV show American Ninja Warrior, you may need an outlet for your little ninja leaping off the sofa. Camps include: BMX, aerial/circus arts, rock climbing, parkour, skateboarding, martial arts and gymnastics.

Learn and experience: Techniques to build mindfulness, goal-setting, indoor and outdoor activities, self- awareness, connections to the Earth and to each other. Perfect for: Non-competitive kids, nature lovers, calm children or those who could benefit from selfcalming strategies.

Learn and experience: Safety, sport fundamentals, proper technique, self-control, strength, flexibility, coordination, confidence and goalsetting. Good to know: You’ll likely sign a waiver and need appropriate clothing; special gear or equipment may be required; camps may have a minimum age requirement for safety reasons.

Visual Arts Tired of cleaning up all that glitter? Send your artist to camp where skills are honed and childhood masterpieces are made.

Special Needs

Technology

There are many camps designed specifically for kids with special needs, which give them an opportunity to hang out in a safe environment with peers who get them just as they are.

Tired of coaxing your child away from video games? Cash in on his natural talent—send him to camp to learn new skills and practice teamwork.

Discover specialty camps for kids who have: developmental disabilities, physical challenges, cognitive delay and trauma. Learn and experience: Socialization, communication, activities that build strength, motor skills and confidence. Check out “Summer Camp for Every Kid,” Family Magazine’s online listing of camps suitable for kids with special needs. www.SanDiegoFamily .com/resources/summer-camps-andprograms/1593.

Perfect for: High-energy kids, thrill-seekers and sports enthusiasts.

Camps include: Robotics, game design, coding, engineering, building (even with Legos!). Learn and experience: Creativity, problem solving, basic engineering, construction, programming and teamwork. Perfect for: Boys AND girls, gamers, math and science enthusiasts, Lego fanatics. Good to know: Depending on the camp, kids may need to provide their own laptop or device.

Camps include: Filmmaking, photography, comic art, sewing, painting, drawing, sculpting and candle making. Learn and experience: Focus, fine motor skills, various techniques and mediums, artistic styles, movements and themes. Perfect for: Art enthusiasts, creative children or children who want to explore the arts. Good to know: Ask if materials are included in the cost. Some camps may require equipment (such as a camera for photography). Most art programs focus on the process, not a perfect final piece. v Cherie Gough is a local freelance writer and mom of two kids. Host an International International

Exchange

Student

EF students in San Diego; Class of 2018 Does your family enjoy learning about other cultures? Do you have an open heart to welcome another family member into your home? If so, read on to discover the benefits and enriching opportunities of hosting an international exchange student. 32 • SanDiegofamily.com • March 2018

Each year, Education First High School Exchange Year (EF, HSEY) places thousands of international students in homes across the United States. These adventurous teens, ages 15–18, come from 13 countries including Austria, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand. “Hosting a foreign exchange student through HSEY is a gift we give not only

to the student, but to ourselves,” says Liesl Mestre, EF San Diego Regional Coordinator and current host to her fifth international student. “Besides the joy it brings, hosting offers benefits not available through traditional education. HSEY students are not simply guests; they are new family members,” says Mestre. “Host families and students engage in mutual cultural exchange, sharing customs, traditions, languages, geography and more. Through this, our

students and families become citizens of the world.” While there are a variety of exchange opportunities in existence, families can host with EF for a year, a single semester, or temporarily while a student awaits permanent home placement. Once a host family is accepted into the program, they are connected with a student based on country, language, gender, age, activities and interests. EF is looking for local host families now for the 2018-19 school year. There are a number of requirements, but one stands out above all others: “A host family needs to be willing and able to include the exchange student as a member of their family. To open not just their home, but also their hearts,” explains EF International Exchange Coordinator, Susan May. Hosts must also provide room and board (rooms can be shared), transportation to and from school, and be U.S. citizens at least 25 years old. Beyond that, there is no “typical” host family; involved families represent the diversity of American culture. Hosts can be single adults or couples, with (or without) children of any age. The “exchange” that occurs is a cultural one; it does not involve sending your

own child to another country. While there is no financial compensation involved, EF students do cover their own travel costs, health insurance, school expenses, cell phone and spending money. continued on next page

Liesl Mestre and Susan May The organization provides a wealth of support to all participants, including initial screenings, background checks and orientations. They also coordinate activities, trips to local attractions, surf camp and community service opportunities. “The training and information provided by the exchange program has been very good, and helped us start out with good communication and expectations,” says Brook Price, mom of three, plus host son Joris, 17, from the Netherlands. “We have tried from the beginning to make our student feel at home and treat him like our own son. He’s been respectful, willing to integrate, and happy to share about his life, culture and country.” The two-way cultural exchange of hosting benefits everyone involved. Most obviously, the EF student experiences life in fabulous San Diego while gaining a second family, improving English skills, attending an American high school, participating in extracurricular activities, sightseeing and establishing lifelong global ties. Educational benefits often extend beyond these common ones. “One thing I learned about Americans is that they love to give back to others, especially through community service,” reflects 17-yearold Karolina from Denmark, who recently completed an EF exchange. “Seeing that really inspired me to give back more and just be a better person in general.” continued on p. 36

Elisa, a 17-year-old Italian student who is currently living with a host family in Murrieta, has found new enthusiasm for school. “One of the things I like the most here is the American school spirit—it motivates me to go to school with a smile on my face,” she says. Sometimes host families enjoy an eventual visit to meet the student’s “natural” family and experience their country firsthand. “We have countless experiences and stories that will [make us] laugh and cry forever,” says Mestre. “My natural family now enjoys extended family across the globe. We have visited exchange families in Spain, Germany, Japan and soon Italy.” Chula Vista resident and host brother Nathan, 15, is the youngest of three boys and has enjoyed hosting three international sisters. “We learn so much about other cultures—their foods, holiday traditions, phrases and words,” Nathan says. “Our students have cooked a lot of food they have at home and it is always delicious. It is so much fun to connect with someone from another side of the world.” Like all sibling relationships, there can be ups and downs between host siblings and exchange students, but strong connections are often formed as a result. Kayla, 16, who has hosted an international brother and sister in Rancho Peñasquitos, plans to visit both in Europe this summer. “We fought like siblings, loved like siblings and bonded like siblings,” she says. Most EF students arrive in July or August. Home placements, required visas and paperwork need to be completed between February and June, so now is the time to inquire about hosting. For additional information, visit www.efexchangeyear.org or email Liesl Mestre at liesl.mestre@ efexchangeyear.org. v Lisa Pawlak is an award-winning contributing writer, who continues to love always, visit occasionally, and communicate regularly with her Swedish exchange student “sister” from 30 years ago.
