Happy Mother’s Day and Salute to Our Military!

••••• ••

What are your plans for Mother’s Day? Lisa Gipson, managing editor There are two events Mother’s Day weekend that I’m excited about: Attending Queen Bee Market at Del Mar Fairgrounds with my girlfriends and going to Rancho Bernardo Winery’s Annual Arts & Crafts Fair with my husband and daughters. It’ll be lots of fun! Ramona Warner, marketing representative We don’t go out on Mother’s Day, so we usually have a potluck party at our house. Friends and family come hangout, eat, drink and have fun. My family will take me out for dinner on a different night. Kristen Castillo, freelance writer I love celebrating Mother’s Day with my husband and sons. I like to start the day by sleeping in, heading to church, and then having a family lunch at a restaurant. No cooking for me on Mother’s Day!

May is Military Appreciation Month and May 12 is Military Spouse Appreciation Day. A big thank you to all our military families! Keeping up with family duties while dad or mom is keeping our country safe is hard. We should never take our military families for granted. This month San Diego Family gives some insight into the challenges of being a military family, including social networks, employment, caregiving and more. Read about how to support them on page 16. Check page 22 for ideas on how to rejuvenate yourself for Mother’s Day or any other day. Moms, you need to take care of yourself so you can then take care of your family. It is a treat to go out to eat with friends (even on Mother’s Day). Look on page 26 to find local restaurants that have a play area for kids. You can visit with friends and the kids are right where you can see them—having fun while dinner is being prepared. They will come around when they see the food arrive. Kristen Castillo, one of our local writers, gives several tips when selecting and planning for summer camp. Find them on page 32. Then check out all the summer camps that are available, starting on page 36. Our Virtual Camp Fair is running now through June 15. Visit www.sandiegofamily .com 24/7. Happy Mother’s Day! Parenting in the Digital Age:

Internet Safety Tips • Cyberbullying over the weekend spills into school on Monday. Inform school officials if your child was involved in a cyberbully incident so that they can monitor the situation during the day. • Don’t dismiss the issue. Whether your child plays it down or is seriously upset, get involved. Parents of “bullycide” victims (kids who have committed suicide due to bullying) frequently comment that they wish they had taken the issue more seriously.

“The Safety Mom” Alison Jacobson is a preeminent voice on safety, wellness and healthy living, and partners with Cox Communications to help keep kids safe online. From environmental toxins and healthy eating to sports injuries and cyber bullying, The Safety Mom is always on the lookout for the issues facing children of all ages, as well as the entire family. After experiencing the death of her child from SIDS, Alison became committed to saving children’s lives. Over the years, she has expanded her career platform to include a variety of vital issues facing families. A mother of three, one with intellectual disabilities, Alison offers cyber safety tips for parents just in time for the summer months when kids may be home alone more often.

Alison Jacobson “The Safety Mom,” provides cyber safety tips for parents and their children when using the Internet.

• Know your child’s passwords and review their social media sites weekly. Ask them how they know new friends or connections, and if they don’t know them, do not allow them to follow.

• Assume that status updates, photos and videos posted on social networks are permanent. Just because a profile is deleted or information is removed, older versions can continue to exist on other sites.

• Kids often have numerous accounts. Along with reviewing who is following them, look at their activity. If there isn’t a lot of activity, they may be using a different account. Investigate further.

• Never allow your child to arrange a face-to-face meeting with someone they’ve met online by themselves.

• Be sure that geo-tagging is off on all social media sites, which prevents someone from identifying where your child is posting from.

• Teach kids to not respond to messages that are inappropriate. Encourage children to tell an adult if they ever encounter anything that makes them feel uncomfortable.

• Teach them never to post the name of their school, home address or areas where they frequently hang out.

• Parents and guardians should consider downloading a monitoring service app that allows them to view the child’s smartphone activity.

• If necessary, get law enforcement involved. Many school districts around the country have a police officer or several assigned to the school who are always on campus. This would be the first law enforcement personnel to approach. Ask him/her for their suggestions on handling the situation. • Teach your child to get involved. It has been shown that the best person to help stop bullying is a peer who intervenes. If your child witnesses someone getting bullied online encourage her/him to tell you. For more information on safe behavior in the digital world, including valuable tools and information to empower parents and caregivers to protect loved ones while getting the most out of their technology, visit www.cox.com/takecharge.

HOW TO

SUPPORT MILITARY SPOUSES Honoring motherhood in the military community This Mother’s Day, San Diego Family Magazine would like to recognize the unique sacrifice of moms in the military community, whether a service member, military spouse or co-parent to military kids. It’s not easy, and we salute you. According to the San Diego Military Advisory Council, our region is home to the largest concentration of military personnel in the world. More than 100,000 active duty marines and sailors are stationed here, along with 6,300 reservists. What makes moms in the military extraordinary is their commitment to raising balanced, healthy kids in the face of uncommon challenges. Here’s a look at the most pressing issues for San Diego’s military families, and how to show support this Mother’s Day.

Social Networks The average military family is asked to relocate every 2-3 years. That means researching new schools, dentists and hair stylists as soon as they’ve grown comfortable with the last ones. It also

16 • SanDiegofamily.com • May 2017

Tierrasanta residents Chris (a Series Commander at MCRD San Diego) and Laura with 2-year-old son, Elliot. They welcomed baby Fiona in March. means rebuilding a social network from scratch several times per decade. It’s tough to navigate an unfamiliar city when extended family and lifelong connections are thousands of miles away. Since military families face frequent separations and deployments, they might struggle with something as simple as listing an emergency contact on the kids’ school forms. “That social network has to be built over time,” says Danny Romero,

the senior program director at San Diego Military Family Collaborative (SDMFC), a network convened by SAY San Diego to connect individuals with a myriad of public and private resources. Romero says it’s common for pregnant military wives to express anxiety over whom to call should they need to go to the hospital. What if the service member is deployed? Who could offer a ride? Who could watch the other children?

According to Kat Brown, SDMFC’s community engagement specialist, many families feel a social disconnect. “You don’t always want to ask for help,” says Brown, who is also a military spouse. “It’s really nice for someone to say ‘I’m here if you need me,’ but I also think extending an invitation is really important. The sooner [military families] can get integrated into the community, the better.”

Spouse Underemployment Underemployment among military spouses is often cited as a barrier to financial security for their families. Those who move frequently struggle with two major problems: obtaining employment and advancing in their careers. Employers might view military spouses as a liability, since their resumes reflect frequent transfers. And if they move before they can earn a promotion, spouses might find themselves “starting over” at lower status and pay every time they relocate. Of course, not all spouses move when their active duty partner receives orders. Those families face different financial hurdles, because they need to support two households.

How you can help Romero recommends entrepreneurship as an alternative for military spouses. He refers clients to The Rosie Network, which provides resources, mentorship and training for spouses and veterans who want to build their own businesses. Locals who’d like to support those businesses can find a directory at www.therosienetwork .org. Another solution is remote work. Mad Skills is an online network where employers can advertise remote opportunities to military spouse job seekers—a global untapped talent pool. If your workplace offers remote positions, please alert your HR team to this excellent source for qualified military spouse candidates. Visit www .hiremadskills.com.

Childcare Every family wants to find high-quality childcare. Affordable providers with excellent reviews often have long waitlists. This problem is amplified in the military community, where orders are often cut or changed at the last minute, giving families little time to prepare for childcare needs at the next duty station. The Department of Defense offers eight Child Development Centers in San Diego. Fees are adjusted on a sliding scale according to total family income, but some of the waitlists exceed 18 months. “I was pregnant, and knew how bad it was,” says Brown, “so I put myself on several lists for childcare. I’m still on some of those waitlists and my child is 14 months old.” Only one of the local centers offers 24-hour care—an absolute necessity for single, active duty parents who are regularly required to stand duty overnight.

Wring kids: Noah (4), Hallie (2) and Walker (6)

Meet Our Cover Family James and Shelby Wring of Serra Mesa have moved nine times (through seven states) in the seven years they’ve been married. This summer they move again—back to New York. Here’s what Shelby has to say. What does James do in the military? He is a nuclear mechanic on a submarine in the U.S Navy. He is a first class petty officer. What’s the most difficult part of being a military spouse? Most wives say it’s being away from their husbands or the kids crying over daddy not being home. For me, it’s the loneliness—it’s insanely hard to do this life without close friends. How can civilians support military families? Invite military friends/members over for holiday dinners. In fact, invite them to church, the zoo, to lunch or just to hang out. There’s nothing greater than feeling loved and accepted, but most families of military members are far away. We actually spent last Thanksgiving eating Lunchables at the beach! Also, offer your trusted teens as babysitters. Without family around, military spouses go months without a date night. Contact the San Diego USO at www .usosandiego.org or check with a local church about military outreach ministries to get connected.

San Diego is home to thousands of military and veteran caregivers. Many are young women who provide fulltime care for their partners in the wake of a service-connected injury or illness. Caregiving is unrelenting, draining work performed with great compassion and love. The responsibility can feel overwhelming, especially for those with young children in the home. Last summer, San Diego joined an initiative to become the nation’s first Hidden Heroes City. Mayor Kevin Faulconer, in cooperation with the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, has agreed to lead more than 55 other cities nationwide in identifying and addressing the needs of military caregivers. The first Hidden Heroes Summit was held in March at Balboa Park. The mayor was there to honor caregivers, and organizations were in attendance to provide resources for caregiver support and self-care.

Ready to get involved? If you have ideas, or would like to learn more about supporting San Diego’s military families, you are welcome to attend SDMFC’s monthly meetings, where the group discusses a current trend affecting local military families and networks with 100 supporting organizations. The next meeting is Friday, May 26 from 9–11 a.m. at United Way of San Diego, 4699 Murphy Canyon Rd., San Diego. right gift for Mom. Many moms don’t want store-bought gifts—they want things like sleep, privacy, peace, cleanliness, harmony and cooperation. The best part? These are gifts that fit every budget. Leave this list where the family will see it.

Rejuvenate Yourself 1-1 tips for health and happiness You do it all every day: get the kids

to school on time, work, shop, check homework, cook nutritious meals and chauffeur. Caring for everyone else often leaves little time for you—but rejuvenating your spirit and energy is essential to health and happiness. These ideas will inspire you to schedule some well-deserved me-time.

Get Creative A recent study in The Journal of Positive Psychology shows time spent creatively builds happiness, so make time for creativity. Follow a long lost passion or try something new. Get cooking at The Creative Fork in Solana Beach. Local chefs with international culinary experience add fun to the classes with their great stories. Learn to bake, make delicious sauces or cook gluten-free. Choose the popular Farmers Market Basket Class—pick up a CSA box onsite from Garden of Eden Organics and learn to cook with locally grown produce. www.thecuriousfork.com/collections/ classes

Make something beautiful at Little Print Fabrics Studio in Rancho Peñasquitos. Owner Jennifer Colin offers a variety of sewing and crafting classes in her colorful studio. She teaches beginning and advanced students with patience and passion for art. www.mylittleprintfabrics.com Visit San Diego Botanic Garden for a class that goes beyond the expected. Choose from workshops in succulent design, vertical and waterwise gardening, mosaics or the new Zentangle art method. Register online: www.sdbgarden.org/classes.htm.

Have Fun with Friends Ditch the chaos by scheduling a regular playdate with your friends. Really! Having strong, supportive friendships is proven to lower stress and increase lifespan. Arrange a spa day with a friend at North Park’s Pink & White Nail and Spa. A facial and pedicure leave guests with a just-vacationed glow. Afterwards, relax at one of the many coffee shops nearby. The hip vibe of North Park is sure to

recharge your battery. www .pinkandwhitenailspa.com Enjoy movies in luxury at The Lot in Liberty Station or La Jolla. Relax in a lovely theater with comfortable leather recliners and a delicious dinner delivered during the film. Or meet friends before the movie and delight in patio dining and a full bar. Every Thursday night is Girls Night Out. Reserve tickets online: www.thelotent.com.

Here’s to Your Health You are what you eat—and eating better foods improves mood. Make a weekly trip to the farmers market for fresh produce. Don’t forget to buy yourself flowers. Find a list of San Diego farmers markets at www.sdfarmbureau.org/BuyLocal/ Farmers-Markets.php. Instead of ordering takeout again, try The Fresh 20, a meal planning service that makes eating healthy a priority for busy families. Clients buy 20 fresh, seasonal ingredients each week. The company sends recipes and detailed instructions for meal prep. Plans

BO-Beau Kitchen + Garden 8384 La Mesa Blvd., La Mesa www.cohnrestaurants.com/bobeaukitchengarden You won’t need a sitter to experience casual French fare in charming downtown La Mesa. Request a table in the idyllic covered courtyard, where a decommissioned school bus and chalkboards set the stage for imaginative play. While you await your entrée, indulge in Bo-Beau’s legendary Brussels sprouts, prepared with pancetta and a balsamic reduction. Every selection is a good one on this small, thoughtful menu. Officine Buona Forchetta 2816 Sims Rd., Point Loma www.buonaforchettasd.com New to Liberty Station, this chef-driven spot for Neapolitan pizzas and pastas offers fresh, authentic flavors and family fun. Station Tavern 2204 Fern St., South Park www.stationtavern.com Nothing sets the tone for a relaxing weekend like burgers and beer in the heart of South Park. Station Tavern boasts a spacious “backyard” with picnic tables and dirt floors. The restaurant is dog friendly and offers an enclosed play space for children. The area includes chalkboards and a half-scale wooden trolley. While the kids play conductor, enjoy a remarkably fresh, well-seasoned hamburger, or a marinated chicken sandwich with delightful house-made barbecue sauce. Don’t forget a plate of the restaurant’s famous tater tots—perfectly crisp with a generous dusting of spices. Waypoint Public 794 30th St., North Park www.waypointpublic.com Come for the beer and stay for the food at this family-friendly hipster hangout in North Park. The play space is enclosed with a mini picket fence, and is often packed with new friends. Kids can lounge on beanbags while they sample an assortment of books, toys and movies. The weekend brunch menu offers a creative selection of benedicts, including the must-try Southern Belle, featuring perfectly poached eggs, a thick slice of bacon-scallion cornbread and a cheesy IPA sauce. Yum! The Rabbit Hole 3377 Adams Ave., Normal Heights www.rabbitholesd.com Check out the back patio at this highenergy sports bar in Normal Heights. You’ll find an inviting patch of turf and family friendly games to intrigue your little ones. Challenge the kids to cornhole, or watch as they compete in a life-sized game of connect four. The whole team will be glad you came, especially if someone orders the otherworldly pork belly tacos. v Anne Malinoski is a freelance writer and mother of two boys. Eating out is her favorite hobby.

loved summer day camp at The New Children’s Museum last year. Her days were filled with crafts, cooking, sewing projects and play breaks in the park across the street from the museum. “We had never done summer camp before,” says her mother, Nicole, who wanted a camp experience that was both fun and enriching for her daughter. Nicole wasn’t sure what to expect from the camp, but she researched it and liked the activities, the low student-to-instructor ratio and the availability of before- and aftercamp care. She recommends summer camp to other families, stating that it’s a place for learning and growth.

Choose Your Camps Finding the right camp can be challenging, but it’s worth the effort. Involve the kids in the process. Visit San Diego Family’s Virtual Camp Fair between now and June 15 at www .virtualcampfair.sandiegofamily

If they’re excited about a project, they’re going to come into the camp with the right mindset.”

Set Your Schedule Many summer day camps run weekly, Monday through Friday, starting around 9 a.m. and going until mid to late afternoon. Some have morning or afternoon sessions only. There are overnight camps, too, some lasting a few days up to a full week (or longer for teens). Figure out your camp’s schedule and map out a drop off and pickup plan. Factor in travel time and traffic. Some camps offer childcare options before or after camp for an additional fee. cont. on page 34

Even experienced campers may get a little nervous, but that’s normal. “What we pride ourselves on—other than being a safe, professional camp—is that we are very welcoming and open,” says Kevin Waldick, assistant director of Mission Bay Aquatic Center, which offers water sport activities like surfing, sailing, kayaking, tubing and marine science. “If kids have any level of nervousness about going to camp, we help them get over it.” Some campers worry about their skill level, especially with sports, but they don’t need to be stressed. Waldick says his campers are given an untimed swim assessment so kids are placed in appropriate groups for their skill level. Whether they’re in a sports camp or an arts camp, kids need to learn to relax and enjoy themselves. “The goal is not the end product, it is the process,” says Gray, who encourages campers and parents not to compare themselves to others. “It is giving the students the opportunity to find their own artistic voice—and to not feel bound by an expectation that it has to look like someone else’s work.”

Youth Surf Camp, known as the Junior Seau Foundation Adaptive Surf Program, is for kids of all ages and is held every June. Youth Paratriathlon Camp, for kids ages 14–18, is in July. “Just because these kids have a disability, doesn’t mean they’re not capable of getting back up when they fall down,” says Travis Ricks, camp coordinator and senior programs manager for Challenged Athletes Foundation. He encourages parents to fight the urge to be around their kids all the time. “This camp is just like any camp,” he says. “It’s the chance for kids to go out and be independent—and that can be a hard thing for any parent, especially for a parent of a kid with a disability.” Ricks is an amputee who is a player on the USA National Sitting Volleyball Team. “Camp is the chance to let kids grow into who they’re going to be,” he says. “Let them really find out who they are when mom and dad aren’t around.” Find a list of camps for kids with special needs at www.SNRFSD.org/ special-needs-resource-list-san-diego/ camps-and-enrichment-programs.

Get Ready

Money Matters

Find out what to expect from camp and what you can do to prepare in advance. Mission Bay Aquatic Center gives parents a handbook, outlining rules and expectations. They also urge parents to reinforce the importance of sunscreen. Most camp programs will provide a list of needed gear. Do you need to purchase flip flops? A sun hat? A refillable water bottle and snacks? An extra inhaler? Make sure your camper is dressed appropriately. “Send children in clothes they can get painted on and get dirty,” Nicole says. “That’s part of the experience. Camps are really hands-on.”

Don’t be afraid to ask about funding options. Many camps offer scholarships. If you’re financially able, consider donating to the camp so another child can have a fun summer experience, too.

Take it Easy

Adaptive Opportunities Kids with special needs can check out summer camp opportunities such as adaptive sports camps hosted by Challenged Athletes Foundation.

34 • SanDiegofamily.com • May 2017

Camp Stories No matter which camps you choose, once camp is underway, check in with the kids about their experience. They may even want to write their thoughts down in a camp journal. “They’ll have so much to share,” says Nicole. “Slow down at the end of the day to ask what their favorite part was. It’s a learning and sharing opportunity for both parent and child.” v Kristen Castillo is an award-winning freelance writer.
