We left the light on in the hall bathroom and I slept with my bedroom door open. Emily Dolton, parent liaison There was a marshy, poorly lit piece of land between my house and my grandparents’ house down the street. Every kid in the neighborhood was scared of this area, but my mother often sent me on errands to my grandparents’ house at night. I learned to run between the houses so quickly that I won second place in the 200-meter race at school. Tony Andrews marketing representative When I was scared of the dark, I would hide under my covers while holding on tightly to a few stuffed animals. Sometimes I also had a flashlight. My parents left my bedroom door open. Eventually, I realized there was nothing to be afraid of. Anne Malinoski contributing writer My preschooler was afraid to sleep in the dark, so we bought a dimming light bulb for his room. It has three settings, each progressively darker. We worked towards the darkest setting and eventually we were able to transition to just a nightlight. Skate Rising hosts service-minded skateboarding events for girls. H2O Trash Patrol brings a unique twist to the traditional shoreline cleanup. And Word Rocks empowers kids to show kindness and positivity through art.

Skate Rising, sponsored by Exposure Skate, is a free monthly event designed to inspire confidence and compassion in girls ages 4–18 (brothers welcome). Girls participate in a service project, centered on a monthly theme. Then, they challenge themselves at a skateboarding clinic run by local pros. “My daughter always wants to help people, but doesn’t know how sometimes,” says Julie Daniels, who accompanies 9-year-old Quinn to events. Skate Rising gives Quinn the knowledge and tools she needs to serve her community in an impactful way. Each event begins with an ageappropriate presentation to educate kids about the issues their service activity will address. Founder Calli Kelsay recently gave a talk about bullying and rallied the girls to stand up for kindness at school. They also learned about students in the community who lack resources to buy new school supplies. After the talk, they worked together to fill backpacks for those kids in need. “What we try to do is give these girls opportunities, the skill set and the confidence to recognize they can be

that person,” says Kelsay. “They can see a need and be an advocate for change.” Kelsay believes skateboarding is uniquely suited to teach confidence—the courage to fall and get back up. It also provides a platform for mentorship. It is heartening to watch the girls descend upon the skate park. Older skaters help youngsters up ramps. Girls congratulate each other on grinding and shredding. Parents buzz about improvements they see from month to month. “As a father of two girls, it’s very important to me that they feel like they can do and be anything they want in life,” says Jon Robinson. “Skate Rising instills this in our girls in a number of ways. Each month they are able to see the progress they’ve made from practice and dedication. They see and hear from women in the community who are making a difference through service and hard work. Skate Rising is a fun organization to be involved in while developing qualities we want our children to have.” Skate Rising meets the second Saturday of each month from 9–11 a.m. at Encinitas Skate Plaza. For an ocean cleanup unlike any other, check out H2O Trash Patrol. Leave the shore behind, and grab a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) to collect refuse directly from the water. Each board is rigged with a waste bucket, trash picker, and net to help volunteers collect debris from San Diego’s waterways. In addition to helping the environment, volunteers enjoy a gorgeous morning on the water. There’s also a good chance of being rewarded with sea life encounters! We saw crabs and sea stars during a recent cleanup. Kids are encouraged to volunteer. Anyone can take a board out on their own when they feel ready. Those who have trouble balancing can try paddling from their knees, or opt to sit on the front of the board while someone else paddles. Waste often collects along the shoreline, so it’s important to wear water shoes with a hard sole in case it’s necessary to step onto rocks to grab a piece of trash. H20 Trash Patrol has collected more than 16 tons of trash from local waterways since 2011. They host cleanups every two weeks at rotating locations during the spring, summer and fall. There are no age or experience requirements, but they request an RSVP to reserve your spot. A $20 donation covers gear rental and an informal SUP lesson. Clinics are held weekly at Ice-Plex Escondido, often in conjunction with regular team practice. Participants can expect to hone the basics, while learning advanced individual skills. Instructors are among the best, including National Team players and Division 1 college players. For those who have never played ice hockey, it’s essential to learn to ice skate first. Girls shouldn’t worry about holding a hockey stick until they’ve learned to move confidently on the ice. From there, it’s best to join a “house” (recreation) league at a local rink to gain playing experience. Trunk-orTreat A trunk-or-treat transforms an empty parking lot into a Halloween celebration filled with decorated vehicles and a fun opportunity to trick-ortreat at a safe venue (often a school or church community). Here’s how to do it:

Gross Science Play Date Homemade slime is all the rage. If you’ve had kids over to play, chances are you’ve tried your hand at making the ooey-gooey stuff. A “weird science” play date where kids make gross concoctions is sure to impress. Our family used a gross science kit to make “veins”, “snot” and “earwax.” Most items needed are included in a kit, so there’s no need to drive all over town for ingredients. It was easy and the kids were awed and delightfully disgusted. Gross science kits can be found at Target, Toys“R”Us or online. Add to the fun with a bunch of free DIY science experiments available at www.sandiegofamily.com/for-the-kids/family-science. End this play date with “dirt” pudding cups topped with crushed chocolate cookies and gummy worms.

Pumpkin Carving Party After friends invited us to a pumpkin carving party, my kids were hooked on trying new wild and wacky jack-o-lantern designs each year. Provide an alternative to carving for young children. Paint, stickers and glitter help little ones get into the spirit and allow parents to relax and enjoy the party.

Gather Tools Ask each family to bring their own pumpkins. Have a few pumpkin carving kits on hand for guests to use. They include tools and patterns to help get everyone started. Download additional patterns online for extra inspiration. Dry erase markers allow for mistakes as guests trace or freehand jack-o-lantern faces. Sharpie markers also work (but don’t wipe off). Cover tables with butcher paper or plastic. Provide garbage cans and extra trash bags. If you plan to roast pumpkin seeds, place large bowls on each table where guests can put seeds.

Carve & Display Once the pumpkin is open (see Tricks of the Trade), scrape out the “guts.” Have fun with this icky process! Draw the face freehand or trace it using a pattern or template. Follow instructions that come with carving kit. Put a candle in each jack-olantern and take photos with party guests.

Tricks of the Trade Be sure to have adults help and supervise kids with all sharp tools. Cut around the stem at a slight angle to make a “hat” for the jack-o-lantern that won’t fall in. Add an extra hole at the top to act as a “chimney” for the candle inside or use a batterypowered candle for safety. To preserve a jack-o-lantern, rub the inside and cut edges with petroleum jelly. Wrap in a plastic bag and store in the fridge until ready to use. cont. on p. 32

Calavera Art for Día de los Muertos

Create a beautiful calavera (skull, in English) to celebrate Mexico’s Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Traditionally, skulls are created out of sugar or clay, elaborately decorated and placed on an altar to honor loved ones who have passed away. This art project is made with felt. Día de los Muertos is celebrated Oct. 31-Nov. 2.

Discussion Points for Teachers/Parents • Talk about family celebrations and traditions. • Decorative calaveras are a reminder to celebrate life. How do you celebrate life and people you love? • Learn the Spanish words for skull (calavera), Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos), family (familia) and love (amor). • Discuss symmetry, pattern and color.

Directions Supplies 9”x12” piece of white felt Pencil Scissors Felt scraps in variety of colors White glue (Tacky Glue works best) or a glue gun (adult use) Embellishments such as silk flowers, sequins, beads, buttons, feathers, ribbon and bits of lace

• In pencil, draw a skull shape onto the white felt and cut it out. Tip: Trace around a glass then add a rectangle at the bottom for the jaw. • Cut circles for eyes using colored felt scraps. Layer 2-3 circles for each eye (reduced in size) for interest (see photo). • Cut out a nose and again, layer 2-3 shapes to make the piece more colorful and interesting. Tip: Start with a heart shape and place it upside down in the center of the face. • For the mouth, cut several small white rectangle teeth and glue onto a black oval felt piece. Cut a slightly larger oval in a bright color and glue the mouth on top. Attach the entire piece to the skull. • Decorate the skull as you wish using embellishments and felt scraps. Tip: Laying out all the pieces before gluing allows you to move things around. Glue embellishments down once you’ve chosen your design.
