Publisher’s Letter

Food, Reading, Phones and Grandparents School is back in full swing. Your mornings and evenings

may feel rushed. If you can prepare ahead of time, it helps. Organize the night before to get the kids off to school on time. As for dinners, try to stay away from fast foods every night. On the weekend, plan meals for the next week. The article on page 16 by Cherie Gough gives more tips for on-the-go families. Mealtime preparedness takes the stress off so you have more time to enjoy the kids.

Plan time to read together as a family. Little ones enjoy learning and using their imaginations while listening to books—or have them read to you. Storytimes are also fun to attend. Find local storytime events and other ways to engage readers on page 20. Make homework time less stressful by removing the smartphone or limiting its use. Find more about this important topic on page 24. September 10 is Grandparents Day. It’s great fun when we are involved in our grandkids’ lives—they are so busy with their own activities! Carter (17), Josh and Sydney (15), Tyler (13) and Grant (10) are pictured above. The Bay family is lucky to have everyone in San Diego. Not everyone is that fortunate. On page 62 Anne Malinoski gives great suggestions to keep in touch with long-distance grandparents. Make every day Grandparents Day!

Families

What are your plans for Labor Day weekend (Sept 1-4)? Anne Malinoski contributing writer For us, Labor Day is all about making memories outdoors. We’ll rent a family surrey and pedal by the bay. Our little boys love the basket seat in the front. They get a great view of the adventure! Adrienne Sigeti editorial assistant The Festival of Sail, which is every Labor Day weekend in San Diego, is really fun! It’s the largest tall ship festival on the west coast. If you’ve never been, I recommend spending a day or two touring the beautiful ships with your family. There’s nothing like it!

Tony Andrews marketing representative We love Labor Day weekend! We always have barbecues and beach days with our friends and family.

Weeknight Dinner Tips for

As fall activities amp up, don’t

scramble to put dinner on the table. Want to spend more time eating healthy meals together and less time at the drive-thru? Invest some time planning, prepping and thinking outside the (prepackaged) box to reimagine family dinners. I spoke with a meal-planning blogger, a professional organizer and some busy local moms to get tips that eliminate the stress of dinnertime.

Plan Spend a few minutes mapping out the week’s meals. Local blogger Jane Maynard shares weekly meal plans on This Week for Dinner (www .thisweekfordinner.com). “Life is so much better when you spend 10 minutes planning out the dinner menu for the week and throwing together a grocery list based on that plan,” Maynard says. “It saves time, money and angst.” Start by creating two or three weekly dinner menus of meals your family will actually eat, then rotate to prevent boredom. Find a free printable on Pinterest to organize recipes and grocery lists. “I have a few favorite go-to meals that are great because they are nutritious,

Cherie Gough

Busy Families

relatively easy to make, and I know my kids will eat them,” says Maynard. “That’s the holy grail right there!” Find recipes and meal plans on her blog.

Organize Use a grocery shopping system so you always have what you need. Whether it’s a list on the fridge, notes on your phone, or an app such as “Out of Milk” (Android) where family members add to an ongoing shopping list from their phones, pick a system that works for your family to avoid multiple trips to the store.

Stock the Pantry Beth Deig, professional organizer from Mission Hills and owner of The Sorted Nest says, “Kitchen organization to me is not having a tightly stuffed pantry, but rather having what you need and a few staples.” To make cooking more inviting, Deig suggests cutting down on the number of single-use gadgets, collector plastic cups, coffee mugs and other items that make keeping the kitchen clean a challenge. “Nothing derails cooking more than a messy kitchen.” Trying to eat more whole foods? A Community Supported Agriculture

(CSA) box filled with locally grown seasonable produce may be a good option. “[CSA boxes] get my whole family to try new healthy food,” says Coreen Jacobson of San Carlos. “Every week is a surprise and sometimes an adventure.” Learn more at www.sdfarmbureau.org/BuyLocal/ Community-Supported-Agriculture.php.

Prep Taking time on Sunday to tackle preliminary chopping and cooking saves precious time during the week. Prepare as many meal elements as possible in advance. • Get kids involved washing and chopping fruit, vegetables and herbs. • Roast veggies. • Make sides such as rice or quinoa. • Mix together sauce. • Buy frozen fruits and vegetables to make cooking a cinch.

Utilize Kitchen Tools Freezer If spaghetti and meatballs are a family favorite, make a double batch of meatballs and sauce; freeze half for the following week. cont. on p.18

Slow Cooker With her husband coaching and two boys playing multiple sports, Amber Gildahaus of Allied Gardens finds a slow cooker super helpful. “We use a Crock-Pot for delicious dinners when we get home from sports,” she says. “It’s quick to put ingredients in and try different combinations. Anne Malinoski

HOW TO ENGAGE YOUNG READERS All parents want kids to love books.

Not just for the academic benefits of early literacy, but also for the incredible joy of exploring new ideas and cultures. Books help develop vocabularies and inspire imaginations. Whether your child is a natural book lover or needs an extra nudge, here are tips to inspire a lifelong love of reading. Start early. It’s never too early to share great books with kids. Parentled story time is a wonderful way to bond with children while encouraging curiosity. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends parents begin reading to children at birth because reading to babies and toddlers has shown to increase brain development and supercharge language acquisition. Recent research shows that children’s brains benefit even more when they are read to in an engaging way. So, act out the story, ask questions, use funny voices and stop to define words. This type of active story time stimulates the cerebellum, which is responsible for language and memory. For inspiration, visit local story times to see how the pros do it (see sidebar on next page). Pick interesting books. If your child seems unmotivated when it comes to reading, don’t give up. According to professional storyteller Marilyn McPhie, most reluctant readers really do like to read; they simply dislike the materials they are given. “Every kid has an obsession. If it’s bugs, get some bug books. If it’s planes, get plane books,” says McPhie, who hosts a popular story time at Rancho Peñasquitos Branch Library. Better yet, take your child to a local library or bookstore, and invite her to pick her own books. Once children discover that reading is the best way to explore favorite topics, they’ll dive in.

Create a book-loving culture at home. According to the National Endowment for the Arts, kids who read for pleasure on a daily or weekly basis have higher reading and writing scores than infrequent readers. Excellent literacy skills pave the way for academic success in every subject. One way to encourage reading for pleasure is to cultivate a culture of reading at home. For Heike Larson, vice president of outreach at LePort Schools, that means reading in front of your child, talking about your favorite books, and creating an environment for reading. “Set up spaces and times where reading happens in your family,” says Larson. “Create routines around reading, so reading becomes a habit—something you do without needing to decide to do it. Read at bedtime every day. Have a read-aloud book on your Kindle, and read whenever you wait with your kids—at restaurants, in line at a theme park, or in the waiting room at the doctor’s office.”

Keep on reading. Larson recommends that parents continue to read aloud to children through middle school. “Pick books that are several grade levels above their reading level,” she says. Sharing advanced books with tweens will expand their vocabularies and spark meaningful conversations. This keeps them hungry

Consider rewards. Is it OK to offer rewards for reading? Yes and no. Research shows motivation decreases when rewards are tied to activities we already love. So, if your child enjoys reading, skip the sticker chart. However, children who struggle with literacy can benefit from this motivational tool. Emily Moberly is the founder and executive director of Traveling Stories, a pop-up reading organization that offers Book Bucks to kids for reading with volunteers (see sidebar). Children can trade Book Bucks for small prizes or save them for something big like a razor scooter or new clothes for school. “Incentives distract from insecurity over reading challenges,” says Moberly. She observes that children who read below grade level tend to resist reading out loud. Struggling readers receive many subtle and not-so-subtle messages from peers and caregivers, which can be incredibly discouraging. Once rewards are introduced, they have something exciting to focus on, instead of their discomfort. Before 11-year-old Malika of City Heights started visiting the Story Tent, she thought reading was boring. “Then I found a book called Madeline,” she says. Malika strongly identified with the classic character (except her red hair) and has learned to love books with imaginative protagonists. Her mother reports that Malika has been reclassified as English Proficient at school, a marvelous accomplishment for an English Language Learner. v Anne Malinoski is a contributing writer. Her boys love stories about trains and farm animals.

STUDY TIME:

SMARTPHONE GUIDELINES for Kids

Now that summer is officially over, it’s

time to redirect your child’s attention to studying and schoolwork. This can be difficult when kids can’t seem to detach themselves from smartphones, so it’s important to set boundaries during study time. Here are smartphone etiquette tips every kid should follow when it’s time to hit the books.

Put smartphones on pause. Although there are a few exceptions (mentioned below), kids should not have smartphones within reach while trying to study. In a recent survey of high school students, 80 percent admitted to switching back and forth between schoolwork and smartphones “often” or “very often” while studying. The survey also found that students who admitted to being less distracted had higher GPAs than those who were more distracted by their smartphones. The correlation is clear: smartphones and studying do not mix. Make sure your child’s phone is completely on pause during study time (learn how with the TeenSafe Control app)—and put them on silent. If kids hear a notification, knowing they have an unread text is a distraction.

Limit access to apps. Kids shouldn’t be allowed to use apps for entertainment purposes while studying, but there are some apps that are helpful. For example, if your child is learning the states and capitals, the Stack the States app is a fun way to

test their knowledge and prepare for an upcoming exam. For teens preparing to take SATs, there are dozens of test prep apps available to help them get ready. As long as educational apps are helping with homework, it’s OK to allow kids to use a smartphone as a study aid.

Communicate with teachers. Some schools actually encourage smartphone use by using apps and web platforms to deliver homework assignments, test prep and classroom updates. Some apps even allow students to communicate with teachers after hours if they have questions about homework. If this is the case for your child, allow him to access as much material as needed to start studying, but make sure the phone is on silent to eliminate distractions from friends.

Use FaceTime for study help. Children learn in many different ways, so if your child works better in groups, it’s important to recognize and respect that. Allow children to FaceTime or call a friend, as long as they are actually studying. FaceTime sessions should also be allowed when a child works with a tutor, so if study questions come up, he can reach out to the tutor for help.

Take study breaks. When your kids are making a genuine effort to study, reward them with smartphone breaks, but put rules in place. For example, let him have 15 minutes of phone time after working through three chapters of homework. Kids will be more motivated to finish the task at hand if they have goals to work towards. The earlier in the school year you establish study rules, the better. Even if kids don’t have an upcoming test or quiz, it’s important to have this conversation so they know what to expect. v

How NOT to Help with

Homework

Debates about homework are plentiful, especially for elementary school students. Regardless of where you stand on the homework issue, the benefits of students assuming responsibility for their own homework and academics are many. Teaching responsibility, task completion, time management, communication skills, selfdiscipline, study skills and strategies for dealing with frustration are all important lessons. I’m going to convince you not to “help” your children with homework ever again, eliminating countless struggles and conflicts at home. I can almost hear your gasp. Perhaps you’re thinking, “Is she crazy?” Yes I am. I’m crazy frustrated that parents emphasize achievement over personal character; crazy sad that adults define their worth as parents by their children’s academic and athletic prowess (or lack thereof); crazy angry that school districts encourage (and try to mandate) parental micromanagement through online platforms where grades and assignments can be checked, assign homework/projects that children can’t possibly complete without adult assistance; and crazy frightened that generations of American children are being raised by parents afraid to let their kids struggle and fail.

It is not what you do for your children, but what you have taught them to do for themselves that will make them successful human beings. ~ Ann Landers Help comes in various forms. Do your kids a favor and liberate yourself from the shackles of managing (and micromanaging) homework. Here’s how: Have a family meeting with your school-age children and thoroughly review these homework guidelines: • A parent’s job is to provide time, space, materials and nourishment so that students can work comfortably.

28 • SanDiegofamily.com • September 2017

• Institute the two questions/5 minutes rule: Kids can ask for help only twice during homework time (or once for each subject). You will devote 5 minutes to getting them “unstuck.” If you are able to help, great! If not, then you’re not the right person for the job, and the teacher needs to know where your student is having difficulties so the material can be retaught.

• Choose a window of time that you are available to quiz on spelling words/ math facts and edit written work (only if asked). • Promise your child(ren) that you will not remind or nag about school assignments and tests. This may require not installing the school’s learning platform on any of your devices. Help kids learn personal responsibility—let them manage their own homework.

“A learning environment that balances the physical, emotional, cognitive, creative, social & emotional needs of your child.” Scheduling Tours for the 2018-2019 School Year

Lic.# 376600498

• Designate homework time (whatever works best for your family). Select an ending time early enough to allow for relaxation before a reasonable bedtime. Children are allowed to wake up early to finish an assignment, but are not allowed to stay up late.

Note: As the parent, you have a right to say “No thank you” to homework, but only if you have a solid plan and sincere commitment to letting your student practice the above-mentioned important life skills in other settings. v Wendy Faucett is a retired teacher, Certified Leadership Parenting Coach and San Diego County CASA.

Benefits of Afterschool Activities

I was surprised at my friend’s response when I asked if her

son was trying out for the junior high football team. “No, my son is lazy,” she said. “He watches TV, plays video games, or sleeps every day after school.” As she continued, I realized she didn’t encourage afterschool activities because she failed to recognize their benefits.

Studies indicate that kids involved in afterschool programs have higher achievement and attendance rates, are less prone to depression and burnout, and are less likely to drop out of school. They keep children involved and help protect them from risky and negative behavior. Afterschool activities provide supervised fun and a break from school. Here are examples of what kids can gain:

Exercise Lack of exercise is a contributing factor to childhood obesity, which continues to climb at alarming rates. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity has more than doubled in children in the past 30 years. We can help stop this cycle through afterschool programs. When kids develop a routine that includes exercise, it benefits them the rest of their lives. Some afterschool programs offer an active and entertaining e r environment that o l p o Ex t y encourages healthy t i r tun e d i habits in the v Oppo terests o r In m s p r i ng a r w process. g e o u N d pr hool on’t have is c s r e i ld Aft ds d g, ns k i r a ch opt io . Better Academic Achievement When a child is struggling in an arduous subject, afterschool tutoring can help. Meeting twice a week provides encouragement and better understanding in a tough subject and gives a student confidence for weekly tests that are otherwise intimidating.

Improved Social Skills Children home alone miss out on face-to-face relationships and often spend too much time on technology. Interaction with caring adults and older teens who volunteer at camps and classes offer time to mingle with others, which improves social skills. Leisurely time in a casual environment opens the door for adults to encourage good choices and positive behavior in a non-threatening environment.

Camaraderie and Leadership Skills Afterschool programs help kids feel they belong, which improves selfconfidence and self-esteem. As kids move through junior high and high school, they can gain leadership skills through groups such as student council, yearbook, ROTC, future business leaders, and speech and debate. When kids help choose afterschool programs, they are more vested in the activities. Experimenting with a variety of activities and seeking new opportunities as children mature prevents burnout. Although coordination of afterschool programs requires time and effort, the benefits are far-reaching. v Gayla Grace writes and speaks on parenting and stepfamily issues. She loves to find afterschool activities her five kids enjoy.

Parenting tweens/teens:

How Far Should You Go to Respect Privacy? Teens by nature crave independence

and privacy. So how far should parents go to respect a teen’s privacy while ensuring they make sound decisions? “The goal is for teens to gradually assume more responsibility for their own judgment about things,” says Dr. Rochelle Harris, a clinical psychologist. “This isn’t clear cut— like when they turn 16, you get off of their Facebook or Instagram. It’s more of making sure the foundations of communication are there.” Determining how much to monitor a tween or teen often depends on their level of maturity, friends and personality. Maturity can vary greatly, especially in the middle school years. Where one tween might not have completely put away her dolls, another might be more keyed into social issues and sexual experimentation in middle school—which means you’ll need

to have a stronger handle on what’s happening in their social circle. “Who our kids hang out with will determine who they become,” says Tom Kersting, psychotherapist and author of Disconnected: How to Reconnect Our Digitally Distracted Kids. As kids get older, parents may be less likely to know friends’ parents and how much wiggle room to give. Your teen may try to make you feel as if you’re the lone drill sergeant (compared to other parents), but stand firm in your beliefs about what is appropriate. “Our job as parents is to make sure our kids are safe and doing the right things,” Kersting says.

No Mysteries As soon as your child has access to a digital device, create a family technology contract to make expectations for online behavior and house rules crystal clear. Establish

sensible consequences to help kids learn from their mistakes. For example, rather than taking away their phone for two months, set tighter limits until they prove they’re responsible enough to handle it. “A month later, if something similar happens, do the same thing,” Dr. Harris says. Strike a healthy balance by setting a curfew for when all electronics are turned off each evening. “Nothing good happens [late at night] if your teen has their phone in their room,” Dr. Harris says. Learn how to make a family technology contract at www .SanDiegoFamily.com/resourcesby-age/big-kid/1444. Besides sleep deprivation, research suggests that the more time a teen spends online, the more likely she’ll

Inquiring Minds Want to Know Teens are likely to shut out parents who get too nosy. Instead, ask “naïve” questions to get them thinking critically about issues that can happen online and in their social circles. For example: “I’m hearing a lot about cyberbullying. What does that look like?” “If someone says something nasty and you push ‘like’ on it, does that mean you’re part of that bullying or are you saying you like that person?” “Use that as an opportunity to talk about the fundamentals of communication,” Dr. Harris says. “Don’t text a friend when you’re upset. Don’t spread gossip—it may make you feel like you’re connected with someone, but it isn’t really the way to connect and it can be very hurtful.” Ask if they’d be comfortable with someone they love and respect (like Grandma) seeing what they post on Snapchat.

When to Pry Tell your kids that you’ll be checking their social media content and text messages. “If kids know that a parent is going to look through their stuff, they’re less likely to get themselves in a pickle,” Kersting says. According to some experts, certain areas of a kid’s life should be off-limits, such as bedrooms and private journals. “The only exception to this is if you are concerned for their safety,” says family therapist Lisa Ruff, LMSW. “In that case, wellbeing trumps privacy.” Before snooping through her room, talk to your teen if she seems troubled. Consult with your child’s physician if you notice changes in behavior, school avoidance, changes in diet or sleep, or withdrawal from favorite activities, family and friends.

Set Aside Time Together To help get your child out of her bedroom and into the family room with you, Kersting suggests carving out a device-free 15 to 20 minutes each evening for “mandatory family talk time.” This might be at dinnertime or before bed. “This is such a hugely important way of developing a connection with our kids—for our kids to trust us and be able to communicate freely and tell us things that are bothering them,” he says. At least once a month, spend time one-on-one with your teen without the distractions of phones or other electronic devices to ensure you’re present with one another. “Let them pick what to do,” Ruff advises. “Without siblings being present, homework to do or an activity to rush to, conversation flows easier.” The time you spend with your teens will benefit them now and into the future, says Kersting. “Kids who actually enjoy hanging out with their parents are the ones that research shows progress in terms of happiness, well-being, self-esteem, achievements and so forth.” v Christa Melnyk Hines is a freelance journalist and mom of two boys.

Across the Miles Stay in touch with long-distance grandparents

National Grandparents Day

is September 10, a day set aside to remember the wonderful love our parents show our kids. Those who live far from their children’s grandparents know that maintaining a special connection from afar is difficult—but it’s not impossible. Here are ways to keep kids in touch with longdistance grandparents.

Utilize technology. Social media makes it easy to share updates, photos and videos. Teach your parents to use social media, if you haven’t already. Be sure to also include interactive, real-time conversations in your communication routine. Erin Endrelunas of Cortez Hill plans weekly video calls to connect her 2-year-old daughter with both sets of grandparents in Naples, FL.

“There are some milestones you can capture in photos or videos, but being able to say ‘I love you’ or have your toddler ‘show’ grandparents her toys and see their real-time reactions is something special,” says Endrelunas. Not sure how to keep the conversation going in your video chat? Ask grandparents to read a picture book or let the kids

give an art show. If younger children get bored and run off to play, point the camera toward them so grandparents can experience day-to-day sights while your conversation continues.

Negotiate time zones. It can be extra

tricky to connect with loved ones when you live in different time zones. Make grandparents a list of convenient call times, noting naptimes and bedtimes—and convert it to their time zone. Ask them to do the same for you.

Call on your community. There will

be times when technology just won’t cut it. On days when a grandparent’s absence will be especially difficult, enlist the help of a proxy. “Grandparents Day at school was hard for my brother and me,” says Laura Hendricks of Pacific Beach, “but my mom always made sure we were not left out. A close family friend stepped in for these events.” Hendricks grew up feeling a wonderful connection to her British grandparents, despite long-distance challenges.

Frequent favorite photo sites.

Photo gifts are a creative way to keep memories fresh between visits. Use a site like Shutterfly to make a custom book with photos and stories about grandparents. Pinhole Press offers board books for younger children, which are both sturdy and slobber-proof. Other options include building custom puzzles and memory games—a clever way to reinforce grandparents’ special place in your family.

Visit when able. There’s nothing

like an actual visit. If you live far from family, why not start a travel fund? Visiting won’t feel so financially overwhelming if you plan ahead and set aside a small amount each month. Make the journey to see your child’s grandparents as often as you can, and invite them to reciprocate. Your lucky kids will be well traveled, and very well loved! v Anne Malinoski is a contributing writer and mother of two boys. She is happy to live near family again, after five years on the opposite coast.
