Our San Diego

Publisher’s Letter

Be Involved in School and After School Most schools are back in session at this time. Once

everyone is settled, check out companies in this issue that offer afterschool activities. Our article on page 16 provides benefits of belonging to a club, playing a sport or other activity. If your child has a serious allergy, it is important to talk with teachers and school staff. Inform them what reactions your child might have and how to handle them. Find helpful information (p. 22) from local writer, Cherie Gough, who has lots of experience managing allergies with her own kids. Schools need help planning field trips and fundraisers. Turn to page 25 for ideas; then access our complete guide at www.sandiegofamily.com. It’s apple-picking time! The crop seems good this year, but the apples don’t last forever, so go early. See page 38 for local orchards. San Diego Family will post info at www.sandiegofamily.com if we hear an orchard has closed for the year. September is All-American Breakfast Month. My favorite family breakfast place is 94th Aero Squadron in Kearny Mesa. Sunday Brunch is great — the grandkids can eat as much as they want. We definitely get our money’s worth. Grandparents Day is Sept. 8. Keep them close!

Families

All-American Breakfast Month was created to emphasize that breakfast is the most important meal of the day — this is especially true for kids in school. Be sure to have a meal plan for school mornings, so kids are nourished and ready to learn. Make breakfast a family affair on the weekends. Here are some of our favorites — whether it’s going out or eating at home. Tony Andrews, marketing representative There are so many great breakfast spots in San Diego, but our current favorite is Morning Glory in Little Italy. The ambiance can’t be beat and the food is a fun fusion of American, French and Chinese. Anne Malinoski, contributing writer I love the breakfast popovers at Great Maple in Hillcrest. I’m tickled that the kids’ menu includes a bread and fruit platter, since those are basically the only foods my sons eat voluntarily. Rik Thiesfeld, art director My favorite homemade Sunday breakfast is a two-egg omelet with sautéed mushrooms, Muenster cheese, avocado and pico de gallo, served with toast, jam, and hashbrowns.

Main Office: 1475 Sixth Avenue, Fifth Floor, San Diego, CA 92101 Phone: 619-685-6970 Fax: 619-685-6978 E-mail: family@SanDiegoFamily.com

Jenny Burman, calendar editor Our all-time favorite breakfast is Spam, fried eggs and my husband’s signature fried rice. Not all of us eat breakfast, but when this spread is on the table, it disappears before you can say “Spamsilog” (what Filipinos call this lipsmacking combo)!

Mission Statement To enhance the quality of life for San Diego County families by providing information and resources that support the importance and pleasure of parenting.

If you’re short on time during the week, don’t skip breakfast! Read our article “Grab-and-Go Breakfasts for Hurried School Mornings” at www.sandiegofamily .com/things-to-do/dining-and-recipes.

Teachers and administrators

have long understood the benefits of student participation in extracurricular activities. Kids who make time for sports, fine arts, clubs and dances tend to do better all around — a phenomenon that Greg Hroch hoped to quantify when he co-founded 5-Star Students. His program tracks and incentivizes student participation. Educators can use the data to identify risk factors, implement strategies and support kids who don’t engage. The data proves what schools have known for years — students who participate in school activities do better

Benefits of Student Involvement

academically, have superior attendance records and get in trouble less often. Here’s a closer look at five specific benefits of student involvement, based on research compiled by 5-Star Students and Advanced Education Measurement (AEM).

Self-Esteem Kids who take part in extracurriculars and other school activities report higher self-esteem than those who don’t. When they participate in sports, clubs and even spirit days, kids cultivate deeper friendships and a feeling of belonging. Whether they’re running drills on a sports field or running lines for drama

club, engaged kids enjoy the benefits of active self-improvement and develop a sense of their place in the community.

Academics Research shows that kids who participate outside of class earn better grades. On average, they are a full grade point ahead of their peers who do not. Not surprisingly, they also score higher on state standardized tests. Darren Daniel, Assistant Superintendent at Murrieta Valley Unified, says students who participate in extracurriculars tend to care more about their school, which leads to more concern about their own academic contribution. His district

Improved Outcomes for At-Risk Students

Less Risky Behavior Student activities help kids find their place in a community, develop deeper friendships and learn to set goals. It should come as no surprise that greater participation has been linked to lower rates of teen pregnancy. Kids who take part in extracurriculars also average lower consumption of tobacco, alcohol and marijuana. They also earn half as many behavior referrals as students who don’t participate. utilizes the 5-Star Students program in all its middle and high schools. “It’s about capitalizing on school connectedness and getting kids connected to the school in a healthy manner,” he says.

College Attendance Kids who are active in clubs, sports and other activities have been shown to attend and complete college more frequently. Once in college, they are more likely to stay enrolled, graduate and pursue graduate degrees. As a result, these students also tend to make more money over the course of their careers.

Afterschool activities can benefit children of all ages, but they are essential for teens. Encourage kids to get involved during the elementary years, so they learn how to balance extracurriculars with other important aspects of their lives. The stakes are lower for younger kids, so this is a great time to experiment and find activities that interest them, while gauging an appropriate amount of participation that promotes selfesteem, but avoids burnout. v Anne Malinoski is an award-winning contributing writer and mother of two boys. She was a theater kid in high school.

While extracurricular engagement is good for all students, the benefits are even more substantial for at-risk students — those most likely to drop out of school. According to AEM and 5-Star research, afterschool involvement in the middle school or high school years significantly reduces the likelihood that a student will drop out of high school. If an at-risk student participates in at least one activity in high school, early drop-out rates reduce from 52 percent to just five percent. In one AEM/5-Star study, every single atrisk student who participated in two or more high school activities went on to earn high school diplomas.

If you’re feeling nostalgic for the carefree bliss of summer, you’re not alone.

Many parents find that back-to-school season is a shock to the system. From waking up early and packing healthy lunches, to coordinating afterschool activities and evening homework sessions, this time of year is all about adjusting to new routines. “We try to spend the week before school starts getting into school mode — going back to earlier bedtimes and waking up on schedule. I also plan school lunches and prepare breakfast items the kids can just warm up each morning,” says Anastacia Grenda, local mother of two. September is an ideal month to explore ways to support your child (and his teacher) at school during the upcoming academic year. When parents are involved with their child’s education, they can positively impact everything from academic performance and social relationships, to overall health and future career possibilities. Here’s how to get involved and help your child thrive at school.

Kindergarten to Second Grade During these early years of schooling — and all the way until high school graduation — one of the most important things you can do is to talk with your child (daily) about school. Ask what he learned, what made him laugh, how he performed on a math or spelling test, what he enjoyed, and what he didn’t. These everyday conversations send the message that your child’s life at school — and how he performs academically — matters. Some kids share such information freely, but others are more private or reluctant. If your child is the latter, try playing a game like Rose and Thorn, where each person shares the nicest thing about his day (a “rose”), along with an unpleasant or difficult aspect (a “thorn”). Family dinners are a great time to play — encourage everyone to participate. “We try to eat together every evening,” says Kay McKenzie, mother of twins and elementary school instructional aid in North County. “We ask about school and sometimes the kids will share about classroom stuff. Other times, about friends or teachers.” Another great way to support your child at school is to read with him daily. Older siblings and grandparents can help. Many families include reading as part of the bedtime routine. Visit the library regularly for fresh reading material. Young kids love having their parents volunteer in the classroom — and teachers almost always welcome the support. Parent volunteer opportunities might involve reading to students, organizing a project, planning a class party, supervising outdoor playtime, or chaperoning a field trip. Different

As your child enters the upper grades of elementary school, you may notice an increase in homework. It is important to provide a quiet and dedicated homework space, appropriate supplies, and sufficient time to complete assignments. While you should let your child know that he can always come to you for help, parents should never complete their child’s assignments. If ongoing homework concerns are an issue, partner with the teacher to find solutions. Personalized strategies are often effective. Encinitas mom Michelle Bourgeot notes, “Our son actually works better if he’s around us — either in the living room, dining room or kitchen. This way he can ask questions about things he doesn’t understand, and he doesn’t feel like he’s locked away in his room.” The majority of kids read independently at this age, but some struggle with literacy development. Either way, continue to work with your child to develop and grow reading comprehension. Consider supporting the teacher by volunteering to read with anyone in the class who needs one-onone attention. Now is a great time for kids to explore personal interests in afterschool settings. Enrichment activities — ranging from tutoring and science clubs to scouting and local arts programs — can supplement and enhance your child’s education. Joining a team sport is a great way to exercise, meet other kids and decompress after a long day in the classroom.

Sixth to Eighth Grades Middle school is often when kids don’t want their parents in the classroom anymore, but that doesn’t mean you should disengage from their education. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), parental engagement “improves the odds that their kids will avoid unhealthy behaviors, such as sexual risk, tobacco, alcohol and other drugs.” Because kids this age are at risk to head down a path towards dangerous conduct, parents need to remain involved and alert. Academic pressures intensify during the middle school years. Some kids who breezed through elementary school find themselves struggling at school for the first time. Identifying the best way to help depends on the problem: If your child misses deadlines due to disorganization, help him put systems in place to become better organized. If he doesn’t understand the material, try reviewing math concepts, proofreading English papers, or practicing foreign language skills alongside your child. Afterschool tutors are often available on campus and free of charge. Begin discussions with your student about how doing well in school will give him more college choices and improved career options. Explain how his love for a favorite subject can translate into real-world jobs; for example, your young mathematician might make a good future accountant, engineer or physicist. Ask about volunteering for the school foundation, one-time events, or see if there’s something you can do behind-the-scenes to support your child’s teachers.

10 Steps to an

Allergy-Safe School Year For parents of children with food allergies, starting a new school year can seem daunting. As the mom of a daughter with celiac disease, I know how overwhelming food allergies seem at times. To ensure a safe, positive school year that meets the needs of a food allergic child, follow these tips from moms and experts who’ve been there.

Communicate Early Julie Bradley, Carlsbad resident and secretary of National Celiac Association San Diego advises, “The best time to communicate with teachers is before the school year begins or during the first week of school, before foodoriented celebration norms are established for the year.”

22 • SanDiegofamily.com • September 2019

Build a Team A team invested in supporting your child includes teachers, coaches and the school nurse. Tiffany Hinton, mom of three daughters with celiac disease and several food allergies, and founder of GF Mom Certified, meets with all teachers and the nurse at the beginning of each school year. She suggests supplying the nurse with necessary items such as EpiPens and allergy medication.

Do Your Research Newly diagnosed? Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) provides helpful resources to support families: www.foodallergy.org/life-with-food-allergies/managing-lifesmilestones/at-school.

Put Requests in Writing I write a letter every year that is shared with the teacher, school nurse, substitutes and all extracurricular staff : PE, art and music teachers. By providing information in writing, I ensure important details about my child’s needs are readily available to staff. My letter defines celiac disease and cross contamination, and includes my daughter’s specific symptoms and history. I also ask for accommodations that will help include my child and ensure her safety. I keep it positive by always thanking people in advance for all they do to keep her allergy-safe.

“Setting up and following through with a 504 plan is the best tool to keep the school staff informed of what your child needs,” says Bradley. To learn the basics about 504 plans and determine whether one is right for your child, visit the FARE website: www.foodallergy.org/sites/default/files/ migrated-files/file/cdc-reducing-risk.pdf Maureen Dempsey, Board Certified Educational Advocate in North County states, “Any child with a food allergy qualifies for a 504.” She advises parents to read section 504 on the U.S. Department of Education’s website and contact a local education advocate if needed. www2.ed.gov/about/offices/ list/ocr/504faq.html

Be Direct and Specific Not all allergic reactions are the same. Be specific about your child’s reactions, whether they are life-threatening and require an EpiPen or are more hidden as is the case with celiac disease where, according to Bradley, obvious symptoms may not be exhibited, but internal damage may still occur. Hinton shares a photo of what an allergic reaction looks like when it starts to help educate the teacher.

Ask for What You Need “Explain how you would best like to receive communication,” says Hinton. “I prefer an email or text message at least two days before an activity to ensure I have a safe [alternative] for my daughter.” Bradley says teachers should avoid putting a child on the spot to read labels right before an activity. Labelreading requires keen attention to detail. Request that teachers always communicate with parents, even if a food seems safe. She also recommends educating staff about the importance of proper hand and desk washing.

Where your child's educational journey is as unique as they are.

I provide a list of kid-friendly, allergen-safe foods to room parents, and ask that alternative snacks from the list are incorporated into class parties. Keep a stash of cupcakes and donuts in the freezer to have on hand. Fill a special lunchbox with your child’s favorite allergen-free snacks and keep it in the classroom.

Create a Culture of Awareness FARE suggests speaking with teachers about the role of food in the classroom to help lower the risk of an allergic reaction. Perhaps non-food items and activities can be emphasized during cultural events and holiday traditions. Hinton likes to share food-allergy books with elementary classrooms to spread awareness, such as Itchy Pig by Nicole Bruno Cox.

Teach Kids to Self-Advocate Self-awareness is the most important element according to Hinton. Teaching young children what happens in the body when a reaction occurs and how it presents itself helps them begin to understand allergies. “Empower your child to understand what is safe to eat, and why and how to speak up if another child wants to trade or share food,” says Hinton. v Cherie Gough is a local writer with extensive knowledge about gluten-free food, restaurants and travel.
